• Use Port Binding Permissions on Windows

  This should be an easy one, but I can't find anything on it. I want to use IIS Express with my local user account to bind to a port on my netbios name. For example, http://computername:1315. My local user account doesn't have permission to do this, but I have administrator access on the machine. Anyone know how to grant permission to my local user account to bind to a port with my computer name instead of localhost? This is on Windows 7.

• Cant register this user

  I wanted to ask this question on meta, but it said, I have to log in first (which is where I have the problem!) I answered a question with this user. But when I tried to register and click on the stack exchange icon, it only displays three dots (animated) and never comes back. I suspected a firefox problem so I tried firefox on windows: And yes, I was able to create an account linked with my other accounts ( http://unix.stackexchange.com/users/27867/holgero and http://stackoverflow.com/users/1779245/holgero ) when I ran the latest firefox version under windows 7 in a virtual box. Then I upgraded my linux firefox to the newest version and deleted the other account under windows again. But still I cannot register this account ( http://superuser.com/users/177338/holgero ). On unix.stackexchange or stackoverflow I never had any problems with the registration, superuser seems to be different. So, how do I register this user and have it linked with my other stackexchange accounts?

  Hi! I'm on the creator side of iPhone apps so I'd like to read some of the reviews for our apps. However, because I'm German and don't have a US bank account, iTunes only shows me the German reviews. How can I see the US ones too? Trying to switch the account in my iTunes, Apple warns me that I need a US bank account, and that I have ongoing TV series subscriptions that can't be cancelled yet... and only offers a Cancel button.

• Can't access files on external drive after reformatting Macbook Pro

  I recently had to reformat my Macbook Pro, and imported my account and settings from Time Machine via the Migration Assistant. Everything on the Mac itself is fine, but now I don't have permission to access almost everything on my external drive. A number of folders have the little red 'no access' sign on them and I can't rename or move anything. Looking at the info for these files, it appears that access rights were attached only to my old user account. Is there some way to reassign these files and folders to my new user account? Thanks.

  I am using Google Apps Premier Edition. I want to create a disposable email address service and I want to catch all emails for a domain. This means that I should be able to catch all mails sent to an arbitrary userid and/or arbitrary domain and store them into a single Google Apps account. For example, in a single account I want to get all mails sent to: 1) [email protected] 2) [email protected] without requiring to do any extra configuration in Google Apps for abc or xyz. My app will download mails from this account and process accordingly. I have figured out that I could do (1) by specifying a catch all email address. Is the combination of both (1) and (2) possible?

• Unable to delete Gmail profile in Outlook 2010

  I used to have 2 Gmail profiles set up in Outlook 2010. I initially had it set up using IMAP, but I deleted it (or so I thought), and re-set it up the old-fashioned way without IMAP. Then finally, I deleted the 2nd Gmail profile altogether. So now I only have ONE Gmail profile set up in Outlook 2010 and it works fine. The problem is that the original Gmail IMAP folder for the 2nd Gmail account is still in my list of folders when I use Outlook. I've already disabled IMAP via my Google Gmail account. But I am unable to delete the folder from Outlook 2010. I have checked in the account settings and it is NOT in my list of email profiles or the data files. Has anyone else had this problem?

• Windows XP - Repairing Corrupt System32\Config\System File

  My apologies for this long post. I would like to describe the mess I'm in then ask some questions about how to fix it: Starting up my Windows XP SP1 machine I got the following message: Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM Tried restarting several times with same results then Googled the problem. Tried the fix described here: http://icrontic.com/articles/repair%5Fwindows%5Fxp (since my CPU does not have XD buffer overflow protection I did not set /NOEXECUTE=OPTIN as OS Load Option). This did not work. I then found another fix for the problem on hardwareanalysis.com: Basically, boot to dos prompt (or recovery console if available) and make backups of the following files:- c:\windows\system32\config\system (to c:\windows\tmp\system.bak) c:\windows\system32\config\software (to c:\windows\tmp\software.bak) c:\windows\system32\config\sam (to c:\windows\tmp\sam.bak) c:\windows\system32\config\security (to c:\windows\tmp\security.bak) c:\windows\system32\config\default (to c:\windows\tmp\default.bak) then delete the above files (not the backups!) then copy the above files in c:\windows\repair to the c:\windows\system32\config directory restart your computer This did work (and I wish I'd done it first, since it was completely reversible, unlike the first method). However, afterwards I found that all the user accounts on the PC were gone. I resurrected them by copying the backed up security file back into the system32\config folder (I may have copied the SAM file from backup as well, I cannot remember clearly now). Now the PC boots up and I can log in. However things are still not right. I tried to alter one of the user accounts and found I could not access the User Accounts in the Control Panel. Microsoft KB 919292 had a fix for the problem. However, the fix failed with a Windows Installer error: The Windows Installer Service could not be accessed. This can occur if you are running Windows in safe mode, or if Windows Installer is not correctly installed. Contact your support personnel for assistance. Windows Installer 3.1 was already installed. I reinstalled it but continued to get the Windows Installer error whenever I tried to run the fix in KB 919292. I have since noticed another three problems: 1) Several applications on the PC no longer run, eg Microsoft Word. Shortcuts no longer seem to do anything and if I run the executables directly (eg for Word by running C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office10\Winword.exe) I get a message similar to: "Microsoft Word has not been installed for the current user. Please run setup to install the application." even though the executable is clearly visible in Windows Explorer (and even though Word actually opens - the error dialog appears after Word has opened. Clicking OK to the error dialog closes Word). 2) One or the other of the two fixes I tried for the original problem caused new user profiles to be created. eg My old user profile under the Documents and Settings folder was Simon. The old one still exists but there is now a new one called Simon.DBQ2515. Obviously the new one is being used because Opera (my browser that still works) no longer sees the bookmarks file under my old profile. 3) Probably as a result of fooling around with the Security file, when I try to boot off the Windows XP CD and run the Recovery Console I am now asked for the administrator password. The only problem is there is no administrator account on the PC. There is one account, LocalAdmin, that has administrative rights but when I entered the password for that account it did not work. It is so long since I originally set up the PC that I cannot remember if the original administrator account ever had a password and, if so, what it was. So, my question is: How can I fix this mess? In particular: 1) Having tried the two fixes linked to above, have I irrepairably damaged the Windows instance, requiring a clean reinstallation of Windows + all applications, or should it be possible to get the machine working correctly again without such drastic measures? 2) Is there any way to get around the administrator password so I can use the Recovery Console again, given that there is no account called "administrator" and the password for the one account with admin privileges does not work (and that, before I started the second fix, I was not asked for an administrator password)? 3) Is there any easy way to fix the problem with the applications that think they are not installed? 4) Is there any easy way to fix the problem of the Windows Installer that does not work, even if reinstalled? • OS X server 10.6 - how to restore default groups?

  I've set up my OS X server as an open directory master first, then (experimenting), I've changed it to standalone server, then set it back as an open directory master again. Now, all the default groups I saw before are gone (Domain Administrators, Domain users etc). Do you know how to restore these groups? Note that the groups are gone only from the Workgroup Manager UI. They do seem to be still there otherwise. id -G gives the usual list of groups. If I create an account and makes its primary group 'staff', Workgroup Manager shows all the inherited groups properly (but not on the main list). If I create an account and associate it to a new group I just created, then the account has no inherited groups...

• Forwarding Emails From Inbox Only

  I have a forward setup on one of our public facing email addresses to a few users outside of our system (to an external address). Seeing as it's public (printed on a website in plain text), we get TONS of spam on that account. We're being marked as a SPAM source due to the forwarding by the external system. We have pretty aggressive IMF (Intelligent Message Filtering) setup, and it works great for internal messages. The problem we're facing is that Exchange is forwarding ALL the email received on that account, and not just the messages that pass the IMF (and don't get pushed into Junk). As far as I can tell, there's no way to adjust the IMF settings for that one account. And as far as I can tell, there's no way to setup folder forwarding (inbox - external address) from Exchange. Is there something I'm missing or is there any way around these issues that I may be missing? Thanks...

• 3 Root accounts in MySQl database

  Hello, I have managed to get mySQL running under Ubuntu 8.10, I am now diligently trying to secure the database and am adding passwords for the root users. My question: I have a root user under the host "kickseed" with no password set I have no idea what kickseed is as the database is installed under localhost, on searching around i have discovered that this is something to do with the ubuntu OS itself. Is it safe to delete this user account from MySQL or is it used for something by the OS? If i need to keep it should i /can i protect it with a password? Also i have another root account under the host IP 127.0.0.1 again can i delete this? My absolute preference would be to have only one account with root access but i do not want to delete these accounts if they are necessary. Thanks for tolerating a newbie Regards Hairby

• Protect individual sites on Ubuntu/Apache server

  Hi,?? I need to set up a Apache server configuration for some client sites that run under the same Ubuntu 9.10 machine. All sites are allowed to run PHP, Python and Ruby on Rails. I do not control the source code of these sites and so I need to set up a filter in order to prevent one user to reach files on another users account.?? If I run a script to list files in "/" from one account, I can browse some files and directories in the actual server root. I want to set the root for each account to /var/usersite.com/www/ instead so that listing files in "/" shows the files in the client's root. ??How is this most easily configured??? • AD Authentication fails in local machine but works from Production server

  Hi i am using a AD authentication and facing 2 problems. Authentication works fine when i move the application to a production server but FAILS in my LOCAL machine. Both local machine and server are in same domain and used same domain account logging in. When the machine logs in the users with domain account , AD authentication from the application says that the account is not valid. • How to deny access to disabled AD accounts via kerberos in pam_krb5?

  I have a working AD/Linux/LDAP/KRB5 directory and authentication setup, with one small problem. When an account is disabled, SSH publickey authentication still allows user login. It's clear that kerberos clients can identify a disabled account, as kinit and kpasswd return "Clients credentials have been revoked" with no further password / interaction. Can PAM be configured (with "UsePAM yes" in sshd_config) to disallow logins for disabled accounts, where authentication is done by publickey? This doesn't seem to work: account [default=bad success=ok user_unknown=ignore] pam_krb5.so Please don't introduce winbind in your answer - we don't use it.

• Change User Folder

  So I had a backup and when restored it to my computer the User folder didn't actually change to use the backed-up folder, so now I have an owner folder (which is pretty much empty) and a my_username folder below C:\Users. How can I make my account use the my_username folder as the user folder? EDIT: I've tried creating a new account and then changing the name of my old folder to the name of the new account, but somehow Windows still knows it's not the 'real' user folder and creates a TEMP folder. In which registry is this configured?

  Is there a way to connect remotely to another user while there is a user still on the same PC. So one PC with users and both of them logged in at the same time, one locally and one remotely? Sorry i didn't explain my question very well, I don't mean 2 users viewing the same screen. I mean 2 user accounts. Say UserA is sitting at the desk on his account. and then UserB is on his account account but it remotely connecting to it. So they both have different desktops in front on their respective screens.

• Do all domains on the same shared hosting server have the same IP or ID

  Here's what I've got: siteA.com and siteB.com are hosted on hostgator. They're hosted on the same account of a shared hosting server (not VPS or dedicated). script.php is an external site that each of these 2 sites are accessing. I noticed that when siteA.com or siteB.com access the outside script.php, the script identifies them both as 1a.12.12ab.static.theplanet.com (apparently because hostgator uses theplanet.com servers). The fact that they're identified as the same value isn't surprising because after all they're hosted on the same account /home/user123/public_html. What I'm wondering about is how about other websites that are hosted on the same shared hosting server, but under other accounts. Basically other websites that are under another developer's control, but just happen to share the same hardware (hosting server). Do they also have the exact same identifier 1a.12.12ab.static.theplanet.com or that changes by account?

• NIS AD password synch for new accounts

  I have a Win2k3R2 DC with NIS. All is working well but its no longer synching the passwords for new accounts. When creating a new AD user, NIS does its thing and sends its Unix account to the synched linux server. It's doing everything its supposed to do but not the users password to the server (getent passwd returns the ABCD!efgh12345$67890 password for the new account). Thinking that password synchronization is not working, I changed the password of an existing working account and it synchs the new password. If I delete a new or old AD user, it deletes it on the linked linux server as well. All this tells me that NIS is doing its thing (at least with existing accounts) No updates have been installed on the DC. I am not even sure where to start here.

• Connect iPad to windows 7 VPN

  My iPad keeps spitting out the error: "A connection could not be established to the PPP server." I am trying to connect it to a VPN I set up with Windows 7 as an incoming connection. On the iPad, I went into the VPN settings, added a new PPTP VPN with the following information Server: Windows 7 Computer's IP RSA SecurID: OFF Account: Account Username Password: Account Password Encryption Level: Auto Send All Traffic: ON Proxy: Off Now I know that it is making some connection to the Windows 7 Computer because whenever I intentionally put in the wrong VPN password on the iPad, it makes me put in the correct one before trying to connect again. All the ports are forwarded on my router for PPTP, and my Windows 7 Firewall is even off to try to get this to work. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

  I've been using the Firefox Shareaholic browser add-on to post links quickly to my twitter account, and am very happy with it. Recently, however, my company has tasked me with updating our corporate twitter account too. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to offer the ability to register multiple twitter accounts and let you select one when you tweet the current page. I'm looking for suggestions on a browser add-on for Firefox to do just this. Just to be clear, I'm not looking to be able to post a single link to multiple twitter accounts at one time. I just want a one click "twitter this" that lets me pick which account to post it to. Bonus: If you know a workaround to do this in Shareaholic, that would be even better.

• Selecting a different parent in Family Safety filters for Windows 8?

  I've got Family Safety up and running nicely on a Windows 8 Surface, with two parent accounts and two child accounts. When one of the child accounts reaches its time limit, the user can "Ask a parent for more time". However, the next dialog doesn't allow the parents to choose which parent account to use - it always comes up with my account, and my wife can't log in to authorise. How can I allow the her account to allow more time/authorise sites etc? She can use the same Live login on our Windows 7 computers to control these settings, and is listed as a Parent on the Family Safety website.

• Can't open Control Panel or IE

  I have a XP computer where when ever I try to open Control Panel nothing happens, nothing flashes on the screen. Same thing with Internet Explorer. I've scanned the computer with Malwarebytes and Avast, Malwaresbytes found some Adware which it removed without problems. Avast found nothing. I looked at the running processes with Process Explorer, nothing malicious running. And looked at a Process Monitor output when I tried to run IE, nothing obviously wrong. The process just decides to exit. What can I try next? I would suspect corrupt IE install but Control Panel doesn't work either. UPDATE: Nether work in Safe Mode under the user account. (only 1 user on the computer) But in Safe Mode, under the built in Administrator account, they work. So what ever is broken, is only broken in the one account. Anything under the HKCU registry key that could break this?

  This is about Windows 8 RTM. How can I change the lock screen in Windows 8 that appears after connecting to the machine via RDP? You can change your lock screen for your user account like so: Hit the Windows key. Right click your user name in the upper right hand corner, choose Change Account Picture. Click Lock Screen, choose a new picture. However, if you then connect to the computer where you've done this from another computer via RDP, using the same account, the physical machine you've connected to will display the "default" user lock screen - a stylized Space Needle / Seattle picture. It's not a bad picture, but I'd like to change it.

• sendmail new mail notification to external address only with the first unread email

  I'm running a webserver with a contact form which triggers a php script to sendmail the message to a local account on the server, and I want to be notified on my regular email account when I got new messages. I could have a notification per email or just send the emails directly to my account but that'd be too much: I just want a "you have new mail" notification sent to my email every time the inbox turns from 0 unread messages to 1. Google is burying me in sendmail documentation, and still can't find anything about it. Any ideas?

• Security Issue with Active Directory

  The retard who was on the built-in Administrator login somehow (and this is what I'm guessing being as he is not here and I was not present when this occurred - Supposedly it was an "ACCIDENT") Denied the built-in Administrator account and every other account except for his personal one access to our domain - ie "Example.net" not just active directory or anything. I've been trying for literally 2 hours to find some sort of way to take control of the domain through the built-in Admin account with no success; I can't even open Active Directory. I'm not aloud to open DSA.MSC and there's no way for me to take ownership. Any ideas?

• SBS 2008 File access restrictions after 5:30PM

  Hi there, SBS 2008, I have an issue whereby a user can't access a file after 5:30PM. They get the message: "cannot be accessed. The file may be corrupted, located on a server that is not responding, or read only I've checked the logon hours on the AD User account in question and there's no restrictions there. I have noticed that the account in question does not appear in the SBS Console, only in ADUC which means the account wasn't added using the wizard. It's a long shot but would that make a difference? Other than that I'm pretty stumped, any suggestions welcomed. Thanks
