  • Android setImageURI out of memory error

    - by Improver
    I have a very small activity that must show an image. If picture is not very small (for example 1.12 Mb 2560x1920) it produces out of memory on change screen orientation. I tried getDrawable.setCallback(null) but no luck. Where am I wrong? public class Fullscreen extends Activity { @Override public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) { super.onCreate(savedInstanceState); System.gc(); setContentView(R.layout.fullscreen); ImageView imageView = (ImageView) findViewById(R.id.full_screen_image); long imageId = 2; imageView.setImageURI(Uri.withAppendedPath(MediaStore.Images.Media.EXTERNAL_CONTENT_URI, "" + imageId)); } }

  • Android Service onBind -> onStart

    - by Gernot
    Hello, I have a comprehension question about Android Services. I have a Service that performs background http operations and a Activity that should display the current state of these http operations. So I implementet the Binder interface and so on. I can call the bindService method and onServiceConnected of my ServiceConnnection is getting called. But as far as I know, onBind doesn't calls onStartCommand() and so onStart() of the Service is never called. So how can I call the onStart() method of the service class and start my operations. Or how is the best way to start my operations in the service, when I also want a binding between the Activity and the Service.

  • android.app.Application subclass, onTerminate is not being called

    - by synic
    From the documentation for android.app.Application: "Base class for those who need to maintain global application state" I am using my own subclass to maintain an object that I'm using to query a server. Also from the documentation: "onTerminate() Called when the application is stopping." However, onTerminate() in my class is never called. I press the back button while viewing my main activity, and everything seems to shut down. My main Activity's onDestroy() method is called and isFinishing() returns true, but my android.app.Application's onTerminate() method is never called. Why is this? What am I missing? Is there something that is keeping it open?

  • how to pass parameter to a webservice using ksoap2?

    - by user255681
    hi there, i'm using eclipse to develop over android, i'm trying to connect to a .net webservice... when i'm calling a webmethod with no parameters it works fine... but when i come to pass a parameter to the webmethod things turn upside down... the parameter is passed as null (while debugging the webservice i discovered that) and i get a null from the webmethod in the client side code... i've been searching for a solution for a day now and all that i can interpreter is that people keep talking about encoding styles and such stuff.... i've tried it all but in vain. i'm using ksoap2 version 2.3 with the following code package com.examples.hello; import org.ksoap2.SoapEnvelope; import org.ksoap2.serialization.PropertyInfo; import org.ksoap2.serialization.SoapObject; import org.ksoap2.serialization.SoapSerializationEnvelope; import org.ksoap2.transport.HttpTransportSE; import android.app.Activity; import android.os.Bundle; import android.widget.TextView; public class HelloActivity extends Activity { /** Called when the activity is first created. */ private static final String SOAP_ACTION = "http://Innovation/HRService/stringBs"; private static final String METHOD_NAME = "stringBs"; private static final String NAMESPACE = "http://Innovation/HRService/"; private static final String URL = "http://196.205.5.170/mdl/hrservice.asmx"; TextView tv; @Override public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) { super.onCreate(savedInstanceState); setContentView(R.layout.main); tv=(TextView)findViewById(R.id.text1); call(); } public void call() { try { SoapObject request = new SoapObject(NAMESPACE, METHOD_NAME); //PropertyInfo PI = new PropertyInfo(); //request.addProperty("a", "myprop"); SoapSerializationEnvelope envelope = new SoapSerializationEnvelope(SoapEnvelope.VER11); envelope.setOutputSoapObject(request); envelope.dotNet=true; envelope.encodingStyle = SoapSerializationEnvelope.XSD; HttpTransportSE androidHttpTransport = new HttpTransportSE(URL); androidHttpTransport.call(SOAP_ACTION, envelope); Object result = (Object)envelope.getResponse(); String results = result.toString(); tv.setText( ""+results); } catch (Exception e) { tv.setText(e.getMessage()); } } }

  • Alternative Input Device(Midi) doesn't prevent Screen Saver in Winforms application

    - by DTig
    I have developed a c# winforms application whereby the user is providing input via a midi connected device. The user will go for long periods without using the keyboard or mouse. When I receive a midi message is there anything I can do to "tell" the system that this counts as user activity (ie key press). I don't want the screen saver or time lockouts to occur, if they are actively using the midi device. I think my request is different than other requests I've seen because they want to disable screen savers for the life of their application whereby I just want midi input I receive to count as user interactivity. Is there something I can call when I receive midi input to signify to the system user activity?

  • Android: SlidingDrawer disappears under SurfaceView

    - by ykrasik
    Hi, I'm trying to create a SlidingDrawer with LinearLayout content over a FrameLayout. At first it all seems fine, I get my SlidingDrawer's handle at the bottom of the screen. But then, if I start dragging the handle up and the content starts showing, it gets clipped by the border rectangle of the handle. If I drag the handle all the way up the entire content eventually gets shown, however if I now drag the handle down, it will be clipped by the border rectangle of the content. Also, if the handle is all the way up, as soon as I start dragging it the whole content disappears. I can still click on where the handle should be on the screen, drag it and the content would show, but I need to guess where the handle is. What seems to be causing this is the fact that I have a SurfaceView in the xml file just before SlidingDrawer. Removing the view from the xml solves this problem, however I need this view. Here's the xml: <FrameLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android" android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="fill_parent"> <!-- Removing this DrawView from here solves the problem --> <com.package.DrawView android:id="@+id/main" android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="fill_parent" /> <SlidingDrawer android:id="@+id/SlidingDrawer" android:layout_width="wrap_content" android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:allowSingleTap="true" android:animateOnClick="true" android:handle="@+id/slideHandleButton" android:content="@+id/contentLayout" android:padding="10dip"> <Button android:id="@+id/slideHandleButton" android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:background="@drawable/sliding_button"> </Button> <LinearLayout android:id="@+id/contentLayout" android:layout_width="wrap_content" android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:orientation="vertical"> <Button android:id="@+id/clearButton" android:layout_width="wrap_content" android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:text="Test"> </Button> </LinearLayout> </SlidingDrawer> </FrameLayout> Java: package com.package; import android.app.Activity; import android.os.Bundle; public class SlideTest extends Activity { /** Called when the activity is first created. */ @Override public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) { super.onCreate(savedInstanceState); setContentView(R.layout.main); } } package com.package; import android.content.Context; import android.util.AttributeSet; import android.view.SurfaceView; public class DrawView extends SurfaceView { public DrawView(Context context, AttributeSet attrs) { super(context, attrs); } } Edit: I just noticed that if DrawView extends View and not SurfaceView this problem goes away. However, I'm using a dedicated drawing thread and according to the documentation (and LunarLander example) when using a dedicated drawing thread, it should draw to a SurfaceView. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

  • ClassCastException when casting custom View subclass

    - by Jens Jacob
    Hi I've run into an early problem with developing for android. I've made my own custom View (which works well). In the beginning i just added it to the layout programmatically, but i figured i could try putting it into the XML layout instead (for consistency). So what i got is this: main.xml: [...] <sailmeter.gui.CompassView android:id="@+id/compassview1" android:layout_width="wrap_content" android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:layout_below="@id/widget55" android:background="@color/white" /> [...] CompassView.java: public class CompassView extends View { } SailMeter.java (activity class): public class SailMeter extends Activity implements PropertyChangeListener { public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) { super.onCreate(savedInstanceState); compassview = (CompassView) findViewById(R.id.compassview1); [...] } } (Theres obviously more, but you get the point) Now, this is the stacktrace: 05-23 16:32:01.991: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(10742): Uncaught handler: thread main exiting due to uncaught exception 05-23 16:32:02.051: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(10742): java.lang.RuntimeException: Unable to start activity ComponentInfo{sailmeter.gui/sailmeter.gui.SailMeter}: java.lang.ClassCastException: android.view.View 05-23 16:32:02.051: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(10742): at android.app.ActivityThread.performLaunchActivity(ActivityThread.java:2596) 05-23 16:32:02.051: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(10742): at android.app.ActivityThread.handleLaunchActivity(ActivityThread.java:2621) 05-23 16:32:02.051: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(10742): at android.app.ActivityThread.access$2200(ActivityThread.java:126) 05-23 16:32:02.051: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(10742): at android.app.ActivityThread$H.handleMessage(ActivityThread.java:1932) 05-23 16:32:02.051: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(10742): at android.os.Handler.dispatchMessage(Handler.java:99) 05-23 16:32:02.051: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(10742): at android.os.Looper.loop(Looper.java:123) 05-23 16:32:02.051: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(10742): at android.app.ActivityThread.main(ActivityThread.java:4595) 05-23 16:32:02.051: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(10742): at java.lang.reflect.Method.invokeNative(Native Method) 05-23 16:32:02.051: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(10742): at java.lang.reflect.Method.invoke(Method.java:521) 05-23 16:32:02.051: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(10742): at com.android.internal.os.ZygoteInit$MethodAndArgsCaller.run(ZygoteInit.java:860) 05-23 16:32:02.051: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(10742): at com.android.internal.os.ZygoteInit.main(ZygoteInit.java:618) 05-23 16:32:02.051: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(10742): at dalvik.system.NativeStart.main(Native Method) 05-23 16:32:02.051: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(10742): Caused by: java.lang.ClassCastException: android.view.View 05-23 16:32:02.051: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(10742): at sailmeter.gui.SailMeter.onCreate(SailMeter.java:51) 05-23 16:32:02.051: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(10742): at android.app.Instrumentation.callActivityOnCreate(Instrumentation.java:1047) 05-23 16:32:02.051: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(10742): at android.app.ActivityThread.performLaunchActivity(ActivityThread.java:2544) 05-23 16:32:02.051: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(10742): ... 11 more Why cant i cast my custom view? Thanks for any help.

  • TextView defined in main.xml - how to "name" it to be able to use - setText() method?

    - by Oliver Goossens
    Hi, I am exploring android and developement and I found one problem. My app UI is defined in main.xml I have 2 texts and 2 buttons defined - easy app. I read that I may be able to change TEXT in the ACTIVITY using the setText() method. And thats the problem - how do I POINT the setText() Method? How do I tell it to change a specified text? If I would declare the TextView inside the Activity with NEW TextView NAME Object, I would just need to use NAME.setText(STRING)... But I didnt so i dont have anything like NAME of the object? How can this be done? I read something about r.IDs but I truly dont have a idea how to use them, where to find them and how to implement it .... Please advise Thank you Oliver

  • PopupWindow with GridView - Trouble with inflating view

    - by k_day
    I am having an issue while trying to use a GridView in a PopupWindow. On my Activity's onCreate method, I am inflating a gridview from xml as follows: LayoutInflater inflater = (LayoutInflater)this.getSystemService (Context.LAYOUT_INFLATER_SERVICE); final GridView popupview = (GridView) inflater.inflate (R.layout.gridviewpopup, null, false); popupview.setAdapter(new ImageAdapter(this)); would like this GridView to popup on a button click. Also inside of my activity's onCreate, I have: final Button addButton = (Button) findViewById(R.id.add); addButton.setOnClickListener(new View.OnClickListener() { public void onClick(View v) { PopupWindow mwindow = new PopupWindow(popupview, 100, 100); mwindow.showAtLocation(findViewById(R.id.main), Gravity.CENTER, 100, 100); mwindow.setFocusable(true); } }); On button click, I am throwing a ClassCastException from GridView.onMeasure(int, int). Can anyone please explain to me what I am doing wrong?

  • How to stop the android soft keyboard from ever coming up in my entire application

    - by JohnnyLambada
    I'm developing an application on a hardware device that has a built-in hardware keyboard that does not slide out so is always visible (like a blackberry). Therefore, I NEVER want the soft keyboard to display for my entire application. I'm aware of another SO question that gives the following lines of code: InputMethodManager imm = (InputMethodManager)getSystemService(Context.INPUT_METHOD_SERVICE); imm.hideSoftInputFromWindow(myEditText.getWindowToken(), 0); But I don't know where to put this code to hide the soft keyboard in all places where it might possibly appear in my Activity. I have tried adding the code to Activity.onUserInteraction to no avail. It seems the keyboard appears after the onUserInteraction executes.

  • Creating a Stack Overflow notifier

    - by Trey
    I could not find a Stack Overflow notifier Android app so I am planning on making one. I hope that my app will serve a similar purpose as the Stack Overflow Notifier Chrome extension. This will be my first Android app so I am still unfamiliar with the platform. My main concern when creating this app is, what is the proper way to access the user's Recent Activity page? I thought of two different approaches but I'm not sure how to implement either one: Make the user login to Stack Overflow through the Browser application or an embedded browser and scrape their recent activity page occasionally for updates. Ask the user for their username and password and forward this information to Stack Overflow for authentication, storing cookies somehow to keep the session active. I think Astrid uses something similar to the first approach, but I haven't been able to figure it out yet from skimming their code. What is the correct way to handle a notification application like this that requires session management?

  • Multiple Facebook Like buttons (different activities) on one page?

    - by Larry K
    Hello, My one web page uses Ajax to display information about multiple activities. I'd like to have one Like button per activity. This would mean multiple Like buttons on the page, one per activity. Can this be done? Can the Like button's url include #!state1 ? Eg, a web page is located at www.example.com/index.html It has multiple FB Like buttons on it, one for url www.example.com/index.html#!activity1 another for www.example.com/index.html#!activity2 Will the two Like buttons work independently?

  • Resetting or refreshing a database connection

    - by cdonner
    This Android application on Google uses the following method to refresh the database after replacing the database file with a backup: public void resetDbConnection() { this.cleanup(); this.db = SQLiteDatabase.openDatabase( "/data/data/com.totsp.bookworm/databases/bookworm.db", null, SQLiteDatabase.OPEN_READWRITE); } I did not build this app, and I am not sure what happens. I am trying to make this idea work in my own application, but the data appears to be cached by the views, and the app continues to show data from the database that was replaced, even after I call cleanup() and reopen the database. I have to terminate and restart the activity in order to see the new data. I tried to call invalidate on my TabHost view, which pretty much contains everything. I thought that the views would redraw and refresh their underlying data, but this did also not have the expected result. I ended up restarting the activity programmatically, which works, but this seems to be a drastic measure. Is there a better way?

  • Android app crashes when I change the default xml layout file to another

    - by mib1413456
    I am currently just starting to learn android development and have created a basic "Hello world" app that uses "activity_main.xml" for the default layout. I tried to create a new layout xml file called "new_layout.xml" with a text view, a text field and a button and did the following changes in the MainActivity.java file: setContentView(R.layout.new_layout); I did nothing else expect for adding a new_layout.xml in the res/layout folder, I have tried restarting and cleaning the project but nothing. Below is my activity_main.xml file, new_layout.xml file and MainActivity.java activity_main.xml: <FrameLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android" xmlns:tools="http://schemas.android.com/tools" android:id="@+id/container" android:layout_width="match_parent" android:layout_height="match_parent" tools:context="org.example.androidsdk.demo.MainActivity" tools:ignore="MergeRootFrame" /> new_layout.xml: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?> <LinearLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android" android:layout_width="match_parent" android:layout_height="match_parent" android:orientation="horizontal" > <TextView android:id="@+id/textView1" android:layout_width="wrap_content" android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:text="TextView" /> <EditText android:id="@+id/editText1" android:layout_width="wrap_content" android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:layout_weight="1" android:ems="10" > <requestFocus /> </EditText> <Button android:id="@+id/button1" android:layout_width="wrap_content" android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:text="Button" /> MainActivity.java file package org.example.androidsdk.demo; import android.app.Activity; import android.app.ActionBar; import android.app.Fragment; import android.os.Bundle; import android.view.LayoutInflater; import android.view.Menu; import android.view.MenuItem; import android.view.View; import android.view.ViewGroup; import android.os.Build; public class MainActivity extends Activity { @Override protected void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) { super.onCreate(savedInstanceState); setContentView(R.layout.new_layout); if (savedInstanceState == null) { getFragmentManager().beginTransaction() .add(R.id.container, new PlaceholderFragment()) .commit(); } } @Override public boolean onCreateOptionsMenu(Menu menu) { // Inflate the menu; this adds items to the action bar if it is present. getMenuInflater().inflate(R.menu.main, menu); return true; } @Override public boolean onOptionsItemSelected(MenuItem item) { // Handle action bar item clicks here.   • Stack memory in Android

    - by Matt
    I'm writing an app that has a foreground service, content provider, and a Activity front end that binds to the service and gets back a List of objects using AIDL. The service does work and updates a database. If I leave the activity open for 4-8+ hours, and go to the "Running Services" section under settings on the phone (Nexus One) an unusually large amount of memory being used is shown (~42MB). I figure there is a leak. When I check the heap memory i get Heap size:~18MB, ~2MB allocated, ~16MB free. Analyzing the hprof in Eclipse MAT seems fine, which leads me to theorize that memory is leaking on the stack. Is this even possible? If it is, what can I do to stop or investigate the leak? Is the reported memory usage on the "Running Services" section of android even correct (I assume it is)? Another note: I have been unable to reproduce this issue when the UI is not up (with only the service running)

  • Is there anyway I can fix a webview?

    - by Legend
    I am trying to load a webpage into a sample webview that I created: public class HelloWebview extends Activity { /** Called when the activity is first created. */ @Override public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) { super.onCreate(savedInstanceState); setContentView(R.layout.main); WebView webview; webview = (WebView) findViewById(R.id.webview); webview.getSettings().setDefaultZoom(ZoomDensity.FAR); webview.setHorizontalScrollBarEnabled(false); webview.setVerticalScrollBarEnabled(false); webview.getSettings().setJavaScriptEnabled(true); webview.loadUrl("http://10.0.2.2/index.html"); } } Initially, I had a problem with the scrollbars so I added the two lines to disable them. Now, I am still able to pan around the webpage though the scroll bars are not visible. How can I fix the view so that I am not able to pan (or scroll) the webpage? By panning, I mean moving around the webpage with an onTouch event.

  • How to scroll to the new added item in a ListView

    - by Thomas
    Hi all My application show a ListView with a button which allow user to add an element. When the user clicks on this button, another Activity is started to allow user to populate the new element. When the add is finished, we return to the previous Activity with the ListView and I would like to scroll to the new element. Note that this element is not necessarily at the end of the ListView because there is an "order by" when I retrieve the datas from the database. I know I need the cursor position of the new element to make the ListView scrool to it, but the only info I have about this element is its id, so how to convert this id to cursor position ? Do I have to loop on the cursor to find the position ? Thanks in advance

  • Creating a dynamic (video) Overlay on Google Maps on Android 2.1

    - by Soumya
    I'm trying to create a map overlay for displaying a video stream (MJPEG) on top of a Mapview. Currently I've a standalone activity that creates a data thread for fetching MJPEG video frames. I'm using a handler to send a frame (as a Bitmap) from the data thread to the main activity which then updates the UI. I'm not sure how I can implement "refresh" for updating my "overlayed" video stream. EDIT: What I mean by "refresh" is - how can I update the video portion (not the mapview) of my UI whenever I get a new video frame. I plan to paint the video frame (bitmap) in the "draw method" of my implementation of the Overlay subclass. But the "draw" method is not invoked by me directly. Thanks.

  • How do I change variables from different classes?

    - by Dan T
    Before I delve into it, I'm very new to Android and I have just started learning Java last month. I've hit bumps while trying to develop my first simple app. Most of these hurdles were jumped thanks to random tutorials online. MY CODE IS VERY MESSY. Any tips are appreciated. The question above is quite broad, but this is what I want to do: It's a essentially a blood alcohol content calculator / drink keeper-tracker. Basic layout: http://i.imgur.com/JGuh7.jpg The buttons along the bottom are just regular buttons, not ImageButtons (had problems with that) Here's some example code of one: <Button android:id="@+id/Button01" android:layout_width="wrap_content" android:layout_marginRight="5dp" android:background="@drawable/addbeer"/> The buttons and TextView are all in main.xml. I have variables defined in a class called Global.java: package com.dantoth.drinkingbuddy; import android.app.Activity; public class Global extends Activity{ public static double StandardDrinks = 0; public static double BeerOunces = 12; public static double BeerPercentAlcohol = .05; public static double BeerDrink = BeerOunces * BeerPercentAlcohol; public static double BeerDrinkFinal = BeerDrink * 1.6666666; public static double ShotOunces = 1.5; public static double ShotPercentAlcohol = .4; public static double ShotDrink = ShotOunces * ShotPercentAlcohol; public static double ShotDrinkFinal = ShotDrink * 1.6666666; public static double WineOunces = 5; public static double WinePercentAlcohol = .12; public static double WineDrink = WineOunces * WinePercentAlcohol; public static double WineDrinkFinal = WineDrink * 1.6666666; public static double OtherOunces; public static double OtherPercentAlcohol; public static double OtherDrink = OtherOunces * (OtherPercentAlcohol * .01); public static double OtherDrinkFinal = OtherDrink * 1.6666666; public static double GenderConstant = 7.5; //9 for female public static double Weight = 180; public static double TimeDrinking = 60; public static double Hours = TimeDrinking / 60; public static double Bac = ((StandardDrinks / 2) * (GenderConstant / Weight)) - (0.017 * Hours); } The last variable is the important part. It calculates your BAC based on the factors involved. When I press the add beer button (Button01) I make it add 1 to StandardDrinks, simulating drinking one beer. The other variables in the Bac formula have values assigned to them in Global.java. The code that makes the beer button do stuff is in my regular class, drinkingbuddy.java: public class DrinkingBuddy extends Activity { /** Called when the activity is first created. */ @Override public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) { super.onCreate(savedInstanceState); setContentView(R.layout.main); Button button = (Button) findViewById(R.id.Button01); button.setOnClickListener(new OnClickListener() { @Override public void onClick(View v) { Global.StandardDrinks = Global.StandardDrinks + Global.BeerDrinkFinal; Toast.makeText(DrinkingBuddy.this, "Mmmm... Beer", Toast.LENGTH_SHORT).show(); } }); By my perception, StandardDrinks should now have a value of 1. However, when I click the Calculate BAC button (Button05) it merely outputs the variable Bac as if StandardDrinks was still set to 0. Here is the code for the Calculate BAC button (Button05): Button button4 = (Button) findViewById(R.id.Button05); button4.setOnClickListener(new OnClickListener() { @Override public void onClick(View v) { TextView texty; texty = (TextView) findViewById(R.id.texty1); texty.setText("Your BAC is " + Global.Bac ); } }); It outputs the following to the text view: "Your BAC is -0.017". This is the Bac value for if StandardDrinks was still 0, so obviously there is some problem communicating between the classes. Can anyone help me?? The other elements of the formula (weight, time spent drinking, and the alcohol %'s and such) are variables because I will ultimately allow the user to change those values in the settings. I've heard around the water cooler that global variables are not good programming style, but this is the closest I've come to getting it to work. Any other ways of doing it are very much welcomed!
