  • Minimizing distance to a weighted grid

    - by Andrew Tomazos - Fathomling
Lets suppose you have a 1000x1000 grid of positive integer weights W. We want to find the cell that minimizes the average weighted distance.to each cell. The brute force way to do this would be to loop over each candidate cell and calculate the distance: int best_x, best_y, best_dist; for x0 = 1:1000, for y0 = 1:1000, int total_dist = 0; for x1 = 1:1000, for y1 = 1:1000, total_dist += W[x1,y1] * sqrt((x0-x1)^2 + (y0-y1)^2); if (total_dist < best_dist) best_x = x0; best_y = y0; best_dist = total_dist; This takes ~10^12 operations, which is too long. Is there a way to do this in or near ~10^8 or so operations?

  • What is the best way to deal with address inputs that can be from multiple countries?

    - by Andrew.S
Most of my websites in the past have been rather limited to the United States when it came to displaying addresses. On a project I'm working on right now, however, users can add events from all over the world. My problem is how to go about dealing with the different way in which addresses are displayed across the world. For example, City/State/Zip is just a US thing. I was figuring I would alter the inputs displayed based on the country selected but I have no idea how I'm supposed to know the way every single country does addresses. Ideas?

  • MySQL -- How to do this better?

    - by Andrew
    $activeQuery = mysql_query("SELECT count(`status`) AS `active` FROM `assignments` WHERE `user` = $user_id AND `status` = 0"); $active = mysql_fetch_assoc($activeQuery); $failedQuery = mysql_query("SELECT count(`status`) AS `failed` FROM `assignments` WHERE `user` = $user_id AND `status` = 1"); $failed = mysql_fetch_assoc($failedQuery); $completedQuery = mysql_query("SELECT count(`status`) AS `completed` FROM `assignments` WHERE `user` = $user_id AND `status` = 2"); $completed = mysql_fetch_assoc($completedQuery); There has to be a better way to do that, right? I don't know how much I need to elaborate as you can see what I'm trying to do, but is there any way to do all of that in one query? I need to be able to output the active, failed, and completed assignments, preferably in one query.

  • Parsing timestamps - do it in MySQL or in PHP?

    - by Andrew Heath
Let's say you've got a table with a timestamp column, and you want to parse that column into two arrays - $date and $time. Do you, personally: a) query like this DATE(timestamp), TIME(timestamp) , or perhaps even going as far as HOUR(timestamp), MINUTE(timestamp b) grab the timestamp column and parse it out as needed with a loop in PHP I feel like (a) is easier... but I know that I don't know anything. And it feels a little naughty to make my query hit the same column 2 or 3 times for output... Is there a best-practice for this?

  • VB.Net 2008 IDE hanging - MSVB7.dll eating 100% CPU when editing code

    - by Andrew Backer
I am having a problem with msvb7.dll eating 50%+ cpu on my dual core system. This usually lasts 10-30 seconds or so, during which time the IDE is non-responsive. This occurs when I do pretty much anything in the text editor, and can be replicated by simply adding blank lines to a function, and then deleting them. Or pasting some code. Or... lotsa stuff. SP1 installed I had DevExpress' refactor/coderush, components, and codeit.right installed, but have removed all 3 of them. (I had installed the latest version of Refactor Pro! (9.3.4), perhaps the day before) I have tried a VS.NET Repair. There is a kb that referenced some cpu destroying with vb, but it was included in SP1 Also: The solution consists of ~30 VB projects and 2 C# projects 8 other developers aren't having any issues with this (or at least not the SAME issues, we all have em) Clean get from TFS was done Project builds properly, can can even debug. This doesn't seem to happen on really small solutions, but perhaps it does and it just goes away super quick. Any clues at all as to what might be causing this, or how to fix it? I REALLY don't want to lose another day uninstalling and reinstalling and patching and so on =) If that even fixes it. Here is the stack trace (process explorer) that I get from the threads window when the msvb7.dll is churning. --- title in process explorer [threads] tab for process -------- cpu:49.28% cswitch delta: 300 to 3500 startaddress: [msvb7.dll+0x4218c] msvb7.dll version: 9.0.30729.1 --- actual stack trace ------- ntkrnlpa.exe!KiUnexpectedInterrupt+0x121 ntkrnlpa.exe!ZwYieldExecution+0x1c56 ntkrnlpa.exe!KiDispatchInterrupt+0x72e NDIS.sys!NdisFreeToBlockPool+0x15e1 // shortened stack trace. all of these are from msvb7, msvb7.dll+0x46ce7 <- 0x2676a <- 0x2698e <- 0x38031 <- 0x2659f <- 0x26644 msvb7.dll+0x25f29 <- 0x2ac7a <- 0x27522 <- 0x274a0 <- 0x2b5ce <- 0x2b6e4 msvb7.dll+0x67d0a <- 0x68551 <- 0x6817b <- 0x681f0 <- 0x67c38 <- 0x65fa8 msvb7.dll+0x666c6 <- 0x6672c <- 0x6673d <- 0x6677c <- 0x667b4 <- 0x63c77 msvb7.dll+0x63e97 <- 0x42c3a <- 0x42bc1 <- 0x41bd7 kernel32.dll!GetModuleFileNameA+0x1b4 This is the list of stuff from "copy info" in help-about, shortened to a resonable length. • Interpreted vs. Compiled Languages for Web Sites (PHP, ASP, Perl, Python, etc.)

    - by Andrew Swift
I build database-driven web sites. Previously I have used Perl or PHP with MySQL. Now I am starting a big new project, and I want to do it in the way that will result in the most responsive possible site. I have seen several pages here where questions about how to optimize PHP are criticized with various versions of "it's not worth going to great lengths to optimize PHP since it's an interpreted language and it won't make that much difference". I have also heard various discussions (especiallon on the SO podcast) about the benefits of compiled vs. interpreted languages, and it seems as though it would be in my interests to use a compiled language to serve up the site instead of an interpreted language. Is this even possible in a web context? If so, what would be a reasonable language choice? In addition to speed one benefit I forsee is the possiblity of finding bugs at compile time instead of having to debug the web site. Is this reasonable to expect?

  • What does @@variable mean in Ruby?

    - by Andrew
What are Ruby variables preceded with double at signs (@@)? My understanding of a variable preceded with an at sign is that it is an instance variable, like this in PHP: PHP version class Person { public $name; public function setName($name) { $this->name = $name; } public function getName() { return $this->name; } } Ruby equivalent class Person def set_name(name) @name = name end def get_name() @name end end What does the double at sign @@ mean, and how does it differ from a single at sign?

  • Rails valiation among a three model relationship

    - by Andrew
I'm working on a three model relationship with one aspect that I'm not sure how to approach. Here's the basic relationship: class Taxonomy has_many :terms # attribute: `inclusive`, default => false end class Term belongs_to :taxonomy has_and_belongs_to_many :photos end class Photo has_and_belongs_to_many :terms end This is pretty straightforward stuff except for one thing: A Taxonomy can be either 'Inclusive' or 'Exclusive'. Exclusive means the terms are mutually exclusive, Inclusive means they're not. So, if a Taxonomy is exclusive ie. taxonomy.inclusive = false, then there can only be one term from that taxonomy attached to a given photo. Now, I can handle this on the client-side without a problem, but I am not quite sure how to set up a validation on Photos (or somewhere else) that says basically: "validate that no more than one term from an exclusive taxonomy is associated with this record." Any ideas on how to do that?

  • Not able to get data from Json completely

    - by Abhinav Raja
i am getting JSON data from http://abinet.org/?json=1 and displaying the titles in a ListView. the code is working fine but the problem is, it is skipping few titles in my ListView and one title is being repeated. You can see the json data from url given above by copy paste it in JSON editor online http://www.jsoneditoronline.org/ i want titles in the "posts" array to be displayed in ListView, however it is being displayed like this: if you see the JSON data from the link above, its missing like 3 titles (they should come between the first and second title) and 5th title is being repeated. Dont know why this is happening. What minor adjustments i need to do? • How to retrieve multiple anchors URLs with jQuery ?

    - by pierre-guillaume-degans
Hello, I would like to create a javascript playlist with Jplayer. This is a nice and easy tool, however I never coded with javascript. Look at the javascript used in this demo. It uses a list to store MP3 and Ogg files : var myPlayList = [ {name:"Tempered Song",mp3:"http://www.miaowmusic.com/mp3/Miaow-01-Tempered-song.mp3",ogg:"http://www.miaowmusic.com/ogg/Miaow-01-Tempered-song.ogg"}, {name:"Hidden",mp3:"http://www.miaowmusic.com/mp3/Miaow-02-Hidden.mp3",ogg:"http://www.miaowmusic.com/ogg/Miaow-02-Hidden.ogg"}, {name:"Lentement",mp3:"http://www.miaowmusic.com/mp3/Miaow-03-Lentement.mp3",ogg:"http://www.miaowmusic.com/ogg/Miaow-03-Lentement.ogg"}, {name:"Lismore",mp3:"http://www.miaowmusic.com/mp3/Miaow-04-Lismore.mp3",ogg:"http://www.miaowmusic.com/ogg/Miaow-04-Lismore.ogg"}, {name:"The Separation",mp3:"http://www.miaowmusic.com/mp3/Miaow-05-The-separation.mp3",ogg:"http://www.miaowmusic.com/ogg/Miaow-05-The-separation.ogg"}, {name:"Beside Me",mp3:"http://www.miaowmusic.com/mp3/Miaow-06-Beside-me.mp3",ogg:"http://www.miaowmusic.com/ogg/Miaow-06-Beside-me.ogg"}, ]; So for now, I just use a django template (but it could be another template engine) to create this variable. However I would like to create this list (myPlayList) dynamically with a javascript function which would retrieve the MP3 urls and the Ogg vorbis URLs from the HTML code. Thus, from this HTML code...: <body> <article id="track-0"> <h1>lorem ipsum</h1> <ul> <li><a href="...">Mp3</a></li> <li><a href="...">Vorbis</a></li> <li><a href="...">Flac</a></li> </ul> </article> <article id="track-1"> <h1>lorem ipsum</h1> <ul> <li><a href="...">Mp3</a></li> <li><a href="...">Vorbis</a></li> <li><a href="...">Flac</a></li> </ul> </article> <article id="track-2"> <h1>lorem ipsum</h1> <ul> <li><a href="...">Mp3</a></li> <li><a href="...">Vorbis</a></li> <li><a href="...">Flac</a></li> </ul> </article> </body> ... I need to build a javascript list like this (where each index of the list represents the track-ID in the HTML: var files = [ {mp3:"...", ogg:"..."}, {mp3:"...", ogg:"..."}, {mp3:"...", ogg:"..."}, ]; Please excuse me for my ugly english. If you need more informations just tell me. Thank you. :-)

  • C++ - Unwanted characters printed in output file.

    - by Gabe
    This is the last part of the program I am working on. I want to output a tabular list of songs to cout. And then I want to output a specially formatted list of song information into fout (which will be used as an input file later on). Printing to cout works great. The problem is that tons of extra character are added when printing to fout. Any ideas? Here's the code: void Playlist::printFile(ofstream &fout, LinkedList<Playlist> &allPlaylists, LinkedList<Songs*> &library) { fout.open("music.txt"); if(fout.fail()) { cout << "Output file failed. Information was not saved." << endl << endl; } else { if(library.size() > 0) fout << "LIBRARY" << endl; for(int i = 0; i < library.size(); i++) // For Loop - "Incremrenting i"-Loop to go through library and print song information. { fout << library.at(i)->getSongName() << endl; // Prints song name. fout << library.at(i)->getArtistName() << endl; // Prints artist name. fout << library.at(i)->getAlbumName() << endl; // Prints album name. fout << library.at(i)->getPlayTime() << " " << library.at(i)->getYear() << " "; fout << library.at(i)->getStarRating() << " " << library.at(i)->getSongGenre() << endl; } if(allPlaylists.size() <= 0) fout << endl; else if(allPlaylists.size() > 0) { int j; for(j = 0; j < allPlaylists.size(); j++) // Loops through all playlists. { fout << "xxxxx" << endl; fout << allPlaylists.at(j).getPlaylistName() << endl; for(int i = 0; i < allPlaylists.at(j).listSongs.size(); i++) { fout << allPlaylists.at(j).listSongs.at(i)->getSongName(); fout << endl; fout << allPlaylists.at(j).listSongs.at(i)->getArtistName(); fout << endl; } } fout << endl; } } } Here's a sample of the output to music.txt (fout): LIBRARY sadljkhfds dfgkjh dfkgh 3 3333 3 Rap sdlkhs kjshdfkh sdkjfhsdf 3 33333 3 Rap xxxxx PayröÈöè÷÷(÷H÷h÷÷¨÷È÷èøø(øHøhøø¨øÈøèùù(ùHùhùù¨ùÈùèúú(úHúhúú¨úÈúèûû(ûHûhûû¨ûÈûèüü(üHühüü¨üÈüèýý(ýHýhý ! sdkjfhsdf!õüöýÄõ¼5! sadljkhfds!þõÜö|ö\ þx þ  þÈ þð ÿ ÿ@ ÿh ÿ ÿ¸ ÿà 0 X ¨ Ð ø enter code here enter code here

  • Add New Features to WMP with Windows Media Player Plus

    - by DigitalGeekery
Do you use Windows Media Player 11 or 12 as your default media player? Today, we’re going to show you how to add some handy new features and enhancements with the Windows Media Player Plus third party plug-in. Installation and Setup Download and install Media Player Plus! (link below). You’ll need to close out of Windows Media Player before you begin or you’ll receive the message below. The next time you open Media Player you’ll be presented with the Media Player Plus settings window. Some of the settings will be enabled by default, such as the Find as you type feature. Using Media Player Plus! Find as you type allows you to start typing a search term from anywhere in Media Player without having to be in the Search box. The search term will automatically fill in the search box and display the results.   You’ll also see Disable group headers in the Library Pane.   This setting will display library items in a continuous list similar to the functionality of Windows Media Player 10. Under User Interface you can enable displaying the currently playing artist and title in the title bar. This is enabled by default.   The Context Menu page allows you to enable context menu enhancements. The File menu enhancement allows you to add the Windows Context menu to Media Player on the library pane, list pane, or both. Right click on a Title, select File, and you’ll see the Windows Context Menu. Right-click on a title and select Tag Editor Plus. Tag Editor Plus allows you to quickly edit media tags.   The Advanced tab displays a number of tags that Media Player usually doesn’t show. Only the tags with the notepad and pencil icon are editable.   The Restore Plug-ins page allows you to configure which plug-ins should be automatically restored after a Media Player crash. The Restore Media at Startup page allows you to configure Media Player to resume playing the last playlist, track, and even whether it was playing or paused at the time the application was closed. So, if you close out in the middle of a song, it will begin playing from that point the next time you open Media Player. You can also set Media Player to rewind a certain number of seconds from where you left off. This is especially useful if you are in the middle of watching a movie. There’s also the option to have your currently playing song sent to Windows Live Messenger. You can access the settings at any time by going to Tools, Plug-in properties, and selecting Windows Media Player Plus. Windows Media Plus is a nice little free plug-in for WMP 11 and 12 that brings a lot of additional functionality to Windows Media Player. If you use Media Player 11 or WMP 12 in Windows 7 as your main player, you might want to give this a try. Download Windows Media Player Plus! • Un balance del XXI Congreso de la Comunidad de Usuarios de Oracle

    - by Fabian Gradolph

  • AVAudioPlayer only initializes with some files

    - by Brendan
Hi everyone, I'm having trouble playing some files with AVAudioPlayer. When I try to play a certain m4a, it works fine. It also works with an mp3 that I try. However it fails on one particular mp3 every time (15 Step, by Radiohead), regardless of the order in which I try to play them. The audio just does not play, though the view loading and everything that happens concurrently happens correctly. The code is below. I get the "Player loaded." log output on the other two songs, but not on 15 Step. I know the file path is correct (I have it log outputted earlier in the app, and it is correct). Any ideas? NSData *musicData = [NSData dataWithContentsOfURL:[[NSURL alloc] initFileURLWithPath:[[NSBundle mainBundle] pathForResource:[song filename] ofType:nil]]]; NSLog([[NSBundle mainBundle] pathForResource:[song filename] ofType:nil]); if(musicData) { NSLog(@"File found."); } self.songView.player = [[AVAudioPlayer alloc] initWithData:musicData error:nil]; if(self.songView.player) { NSLog(@"Player loaded."); } [self.songView.player play]; NSLog(@"You should be hearing something now."); Thanks, Brendan

  • Problems with MediaPlayer, raw resources, stop and start

    - by arakn0
Hello everybody, I'm new in Android development and I have the next question/problem. I'm playing around with the MediaPlayer class to reproduce some sounds/music. I am playing raw resources (res/raw) and it looks kind of easy. To play a raw resource, the MediaPlayer has to be initialized like this: MediaPlayer mp = MediaPlayer.create(appContext, R.raw.song); mp.start(); Until here there is no problem. The sound is played, and everything works fine. My problem appears when I want to add more options to my application. Specifically when I add the "Stop" button/option. Basically, what I want to do is...when I press "Stop", the music stops. And when I press "Start", the song/sound starts over. (pretty basic!) To stop the media player, you only have to call stop(). But to play the sound again, the media player has to be reseted and prepared. mp.reset(); mp.setDataSource(params); mp.prepare(); The problem is that the method setDataSource() only accepts as params a file path, Content Provider URI, streaming media URL path, or File Descriptor. So, since this method doesn't accept a resource identifier, I don't know how to set the data source in order to call prepare(). In addition, I don't understand why you can't use a Resouce identifier to set the data source, but you can use a resource identifier when initializing the MediaPlayer. I guess that I'm missing something. I wonder if I am mixing concepts, and the method stop() doesn't have to be called in the "Stop" button. Any help? Thanks in advanced!!!
