• Paid service that will bulk convert HTML and text to PDF?

  We have a repository of documents in HTML and text that we're looking to get into PDF format, but my boss (another developer) feels that writing this portion of the application will detract from the main development that we're doing at the moment. Is anyone aware of any services that will be able to do bulk conversions of these documents to PDF? Any services that will also provide thumbnails for the documents is something we're looking for as well.

  I bought a bunch of Kindle books which I read in the Kindle for PC app but it's too restrictive so I want to try to convert them into another format but I'm worried whether the books will no longer function in the Kindle for PC app? Once you convert a Kindle book will it lose formatting etc.? Can it be re-converted back into the Kindle format once it has been converted? And, more importantly will Kindle book with a broken DRM work in the PC app? Win 7 Pro. Kindle for PC 1.8.3.

Though cost is an issue at this time, I want to be professional and effective. Should I use existing free platform templates, like PHP, Joomla, or should I develop my own? What are the advantages/disadvantages of either option? As a rough estimate, how much will it cost me to develop and manage my own? And how long will it take.   Is there a way to prevent Windows Media Player from connecting to the internet and MS using the hosts file or other methods? Edit: (Nov 20 2009 at 19:16) I have both VLC and MPC and I do use them. However I am currently using WMP to organize all my music and I hate that WMP is always making outgoing connections. I just tried TCPView and can't believe how many connections WMP makes when you first launch it. I have even disabled everything in its options that relates to connecting to internet. Could any of you recommend a good media player thats also good for organizing your music library like WMP, and doesnt connect to the internet? Preferably one that a WMP user would actually like as much as WMP. The reason I use WMP is because I like its interface, the way its setup and how it looks.

• Receive anonymous users' input by web upload form or email. Any online service for that?

  Are you aware of any online service or online "platform" allowing users, not previously registered, to upload pairs of picture+comment to a database? It would be a collaborative database of picture+comment pairs. I'm not going wiki or googlegroup, picasa or such because I'd like the user to have the least to do to participate, that is e.g.: take a picture with his phone and email it to an email to an email address. Or go to a web page with an upload form, type in a description, hit OK and that's it. And the goal is also that it be as hassle-less to put up as possible. Yeah I know, it can't programme itself to my requirements :) by I'm suspecting there's a tool or tool combination going a decent way through my needs. Thanks for any info/advice! • How can I improve these online java programming puzzles I wrote for my (middle/high school) students?

  I'm teaching some middle and high school students programming right now, and I found that some of them really liked online programming puzzles. So I created http://www.kapparate.com/coder/ , and right now there's 4 categories of puzzles. All the puzzles are set up right now so that variables are pre-initialized, and the user plugs in some code in the middle. For example, the problem might say these are pre-initialized: int x = ????; int y = ????; int z; and then the program might ask the student to write the final line of code: z = x + y;. Now I know I could go a long way in improving the usability of this site (like having an area that lists the pre-defined variables), but I was wondering if this concept seems sound. I know some sites have kids fill in functions, but not all of my students know what functions are yet, and I'm trying to introduce online programming puzzles before that.

• Relating NP-Complete problems to real world problems

  I have a decent grasp of NP Complete problems; that's not the issue. What I don't have is a good sense of where they turn up in "real" programming. Some (like knapsack and traveling salesman) are obvious, but others don't seem obviously connected to "real" problems. I've had the experience several times of struggling with a difficult problem only to realize it is a well known NP Complete problem that has been researched extensively. If I had recognized the connection more quickly I could have saved quite a bit of time researching existing solutions to my specific problem. Are there any resources (online or print) that specifically connect NP Complete to real world instances?

  I was searching the net for something like a wiki database, just like wikipedia but instead stores structured content, editable by users. What I was looking for was an online database accessible by everyone where people can design the schema and data with proper versioning of both schema and data. I couldn't find any such site. I am not sure if it is my search skills or if there really is no wiki database as of now. Does anyone out there know anything like this? I think there is a great potential for something like this. A possible example will be a website with a GUI for querying a MySQL DB where any website visitor can create DB objects and populate data.

• Database of common translated phrases for localization?

  I'd like to localize my app into a few other languages, all of which I can barely order a drink in. Does anyone know of an online resource for translations of common software menu options, messages, etc. into other languages? Given the number of developers (both OSS and closed-source) that deal with localization, and the overlap of resource strings between, it seems like a pretty obvious fit for a wiki or open source package, but I can't seem to find anything like this. I could try to mine the Windows resource files or dig around in resource strings in robust OSS apps like Firefox, but I suspect I'm not the first person to think of this and surely there is a site that I'm just not finding yet. Update: since nothing exists like this that I could find, I started a feeble attempt at an open-source string library. This should work like this: The company would use 2-3 jabber accounts like Google Talk for providing support Online chat form that would connect to one of currently online jabber accounts Optionally give one proxy jabber account to the customers. This proxy would contact any of the currently online company accounts. Using this customers will see only one chat contact but they will speak with different people based on who is online at the moment. • Computer Vision Website Image Slideshow help

  Hi, I'm making an online display of the output of a computer vision algorithm. After running the algorithm I am left with a folder of about 1000 16 bit .tiff files. I need to put those on the website in a list for so that the researchers can click through and find the list. Also there needs to be an image frame with an "animated gif" feel that can be started stopped and played in reverse. Any ideas on the best way to do this? What language to use? I made a simple website in Ruby on Rails but I don't know if it has the capabilities to do what I require.

• Using Google to find programming answers (does locale matter)?

  I have overseas developers working for me, and sometimes I am surprised they can't find the same resources online that I do. They are in a South America country... and Google defaults to their language/locale. What do you think about this, when using it to solve computer programs? There is very little software development done in their country (as compared to the US). Is Google skewing their results for articles in their language or posted on sites that are local to them? Should I insist that they bypass their local Google search and have them use the US version?

  As a programmer, do you see any professional or other advantage in using your real name in online discourse, versus an invented handle? I've always gone by a single username and had my real name displayed whenever possible, for a few reasons: My interests online are almost exclusively professional and aboveboard. It constructs a search-friendly public log of all of my work, everywhere. If someone wants to contact me, there are many ways to do it. My portfolio of work is all tied to me personally. Possible cons to full disclosure include: If you feel like becoming involved in something untoward, it could be harder. The psychopath who inherits your project can more easily find out where you live. You might be spammed by people who are not worth the precious time that could be better spent writing more of the brilliant software you're famous for. • How can I preview the contents of books sold on Amazon in Internet Explorer 10?

  I run 64-bit Windows 7 and have both Internet Explorer 10 and a newly-downloaded copy of Google Chrome. I downloaded the latter when I found that I could not look (preview) the contents of books sold on Amazon (using it "Look Inside" feature) and wanted to try to get a handle on how extensive the problem was (i.e., whether it occurred on other browsers, too). It turns out that this isn't a problem with Chrome. However, I have grown accustomed over the years to IE and would prefer to resolve this problem instead. Here's an example of my attempt to 'Search Inside' a book on sale at Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Intellectuals-Race-Thomas-Sowell/dp/0465058728/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1382301764&sr=1-1&keywords=thomas+sowell#reader_0465058728 I understand that I can't (as is the case in some technical support websites) add a screen shot (ie. JPG to this), but if I were to describe what this looks like in IE, the area where the text would appear appears as a blank white page with horizontal lines where the text would ordinarily be. I have just examined this posting of mine via Chrome and the contents of the selected page are clearly visible.

  I am looking to code a file storage application in perl similar to amazon s3. I already have a amazon s3 clone that I found online called parkplace but its in ruby and is old also isn't built for high loads. I am not really sure what modules and programs I should use so id like some help picking them out. My requirements are listed below (yes I know there are lots but I could start simple then add more once I get it going): Easy API implementation for client side apps. (maybe REST (?) Centralized database server for the USERDB (maybe PostgreSQL (?). Logging of all connections, bandwidth used, well pretty much everything to a centralized server (maybe PostgreSQL again (?). Easy server side configuration (config file(s) stored on the servers). Web based control panel for admin(s) and user(s) to show logs. (could work just running queries from the databases) Fast High Uptime Low memory usage Some sort of load distribution/load balancer (maybe a dns based or pound or perlbal or something else (?). Maybe a cache of some sort (memcached or parlbal or something else (?). Thanks in advance

• Database design for credit based purchases

  I need an elegant way to implement credit-based purchases for an online store with a small variety of products which can be purchased using virtual credit or real currency. Alternatively, products could only be priced in credits. Previous work I have implemented credit-based purchasing before using different product types (eg. Credit, Voucher or Music) with post-order processing to assign purchased credit to users in the form of real currency, which could subsequently be used to discount future orders' charge totals. This worked fairly well as a makeshift solution, but did not succeed in disconnecting the virtual currency from the real currency, which is what I'd like to do, since spending credits is psychologically easier for customers than spending real currency. Design I need guidance on designing the database correctly with support for the simultaneous bulk purchase of credits at a discount along with real currency products. Alternatively, should all products be priced in credits and only credit have a real currency value? Existing Database Design Partial Products table: ProductId Title Type UnitPrice SalePrice Partial Orders table: OrderId UserId (related to Users table, not shown) Status Value Total Partial OrderItems table (similar to CartItems table): OrderItemId OrderId (related to Orders table) ProductId (related to Products table) Quantity UnitPrice SalePrice Prospective UserCredits table: CreditId UserId (related to Users table, not shown) Value (+/- value.
