• gnome-file-share-properties doesn't work

  I've configured gnome-file-share-properties on all my Ubuntu's PC for sharing the directory Public to each other. I following some guide found on Internet for the configuration of it, all explain the same procedure but in my case I don't see any Public directory shared with the PC. Following this link http://library.gnome.org/users/gnome-user-share/stable/gnome-user-share-getting-started.html.en I'd see the directory Public plus the name of PC that shares its directory on Nautilus Places. In my case I don't see anything, therefore on the Network place see all the machines 'n if I try to click on one receive this: "DBus error org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.NoReply: Message did not receive a reply (timeout by message bus)" note: I don't want to use Samba because I've all Ubuntu PC, and the firewall is disabled on all PC.

• How do I set up XDMCP access via GDM?

  I am a newbie to ubuntu linux, and want to setup xdmcp access, so i can access it from my windows box using xming. part of it is learning exercise also, since i know i could use vnc to directly connect to ubuntu. I modified the gdm's custom.conf file like this [xdmcp] Enable=true but when i launch xlaunch, i see a blank screen, further diagnosing with wireshark, i got that the udp port 177 on the linux box is unreachable so i disabled the firewall on linux box, but still same result. I checked with nmap and there is no service listening on UDP 177 port, the gdnsetup on natty is quite different from the older version, where setting up xdmcp was in UI

• How to add a printer in gnome-shell

  I'm using Gnome Shell (although I'm not sure whether the "Printers" app is part of that or just part of Gnome). I go to "Printers" from the overview, click the + button on the bottom left, choose network and then see a message "FirewallD is not running. Network printer detection needs services mdns, ipp, ipp-client and samba-client enabled on firewall.". It's not auto detected anything. There's an Address box and a Search by Address tickbox, but neither seem to do anything. I'm frustrated because I know all the details of the printer, but have nowhere to put them in. Automation is supposed to make things easier, no? For example I know the printer is at lpd://10.67.5.3/lp1 but I can't put this in anywhere. Is there a GUI that works, or have I misunderstood how to use it?

• ssh tunnel to a remote CUPS server

  There is a CUPS server beyond a firewall and I'd like to use it's printers. I have ssh access to computers that can access the CUPS server, and can get at the servers web interface by forwarding say port 1631. I cannot forward port 631 as I've not got root access to anything on the servers network. In Ubuntu's 'Printing' control panel, I can enter the address of a server, but I've not been able to connect through the forwarded port (localhost:1631, which is forwarded to the remote CUPS server's 631 port). Any ideas?

• Can I speed up File Sync for Ubuntu One?

  I am using ubuntu 11.04 on my home laptop and the same on my work laptop. I just wanted to sync the work folders on my home laptop to my office laptop which is ~300Mb of data. This would normally be a short download but ubuntu-one is taking forever to sync it. Any ideas what could cause this? I am not behind any firewall or anything of that sort. I have not checked the limit bandwidth box in the preferences.

In Windows7 I have made the following in order to activate remote desktop: I've gone to computer - properties - remote settings I've selected the option: "Allow connections from computers running any version of Remote Desktop I've opened "Windows Firewall with Advanced Security" In inbound rules I've enabled the rules for remote desktop (public and domain) I have also installed Remmina in the Ubuntu machine. For configuring it I did the following steps: Selected the RDP protocol In the server input I have written the Windows machine public IP. In username / password I have typed my login credentials (the same as my Windows admin account) But when I try to connect I get this error message: "Unable to connect to RDP server 89.130.251.160" If I ping my Windows7 machine, I have a correct response. Any suggestions?

• Redirect packages directed to port 5000 to another port

  I'm trying to use eboard to connect to the FICS servers (http://www.freechess.org), but it fails because port 5000 is blocked (company firewall). However, I can connect to the server through the telnet port (23): telnet freechess.org 23 (succeeds) telnet freechess.org 5000 (fails) Unfortunately the port number is hardcoded (see here: http://ubuntuforums.org/archive/index.php/t-1613075.html). I'd rather not have to hack the source code as the author of that thread ended up doing. Can I just forward the port on my local machine using iptables? I tried: sudo iptables -t nat -A PREROUTING -i eth0 -p tcp --dport 5000 -j REDIRECT --to-port 23 and sudo iptables -t nat -I OUTPUT --src 0/0 -p tcp --dport 5000 -j REDIRECT --to-ports 23 but these didn't work...   I read this article Unobtrusive JavaScript with jQuery and I noticed these points in the slide page 11 some companies strip JavaScript at the firewall some run the NoScript Firefox extension to protect themselves from common XSS and CSRF attacks many mobile devices ignore JavaScript entirely screen readers do execute JavaScript but accessibility issues mean you may not want them to I did not understand the fourth point. What does it mean? I need your comment and responses on these points. Is not using JavaScript and switching to libraries like jQuery worth it? UPDATE 1 : whats the meaning of Unobtrusive JavaScript with jQuery ? and yes it does not say we should use libraries but we should have them on external files for that reason i asked my question.

• Drupal 7: Documents as a node/block/field

  I'm working on my first Drupal site. I've progressed in learning the basics . I still have a lot to learn tho. Using FileViewer I can load a PDF saved in a field, for view content of various types. I haven't found something that does the same for Word Docs, Excel, PDF, etc. Does anyone know of something that works in Drupal 7 to load documents other than PDF like FileViewer does inside a browser? Or like Scribd does (Scribd is hosted. I am behind a firewall with limited access for users. So I don't want to use a Scribd like service.)

• URL rewriting via forward proxy

  I have an app that runs inside my firewall and talks out to multiple end points via HTTP/HTTPS on a non-standard port e.g. http://endpoint1.domain.com:7171, http://endpoint2.domain.com:7171 What I want to do is route these requests through a forward proxy that then rewrites the URL to something like http://allendpoints.domain.com/endpoint1 (port 80 or 443) then on the other end have a reverse proxy that unwinds what I did on the forward proxy to reach the specific endpoints. The result being that I can route existing app requests through to specific endpoints across the internet without having to change my app software. My questions are: is this even possible? is it a good idea, are their better ways to do this? Can this be done with IIS and Apache as the proxies?

• Internet keep dropping in Ubuntu 12.04

  I am having an issue with my Ubuntu, I keep getting "server not found" errors when I try to go online, I have tried pinging my DNS and Goggle, and it seems like no packets are dropped, but still my Internet is not working Also my other PCs in the house have working Internet connection. I am sure there is no firewall active here, also nothing on my router is blocking, and I checked cables. I have no issues in the same PC in Windows. It is only in Ubuntu. Any ideas?

• Unable to connect with IIS7 Manager to remote site

  I was unable to connect with IIS7 manager to a remote site. I got on the phone with the hosting provider and they started troubleshooting. After a few minutes they went over all my settings, username, password...the whole shebang and I still couldn't. I then asked the support tech if any ports needed to be opened on my side and she said "ONLY PORT 80 NEEDS TO BE OPENED"... after a few more mins I decided to hop over to the IIS7 website but still couldn't find anything incicating specific ports, but I did came across a doc mentioning 8172 as a port IIS7 uses so I went to my firewall did the following OPEN PORT 8172 OUTBOUND That did the trick!...and the support tech updated her document accordingly.

  This one was not easy to solve ... Error: The crawler could not communicate with the server. Check that the server is available and that the firewall access is configured. Context: Some pages were not crawled (giving the above error) and, what is worse, all the sub content of that site was not crawled either! (the pages were the homepages of the site) Solution:The pages that could not be crawled due to this error contained a custom web part. This web part used default credentials for a given action. During crawling, the SP_Search account tried to perform this action but did not have the appropriate rights. In the cpanel, I selected nautilus for accessing web-disk and I was given a note: Note: In order for the Web Disk to work, you will need to allow port 2078 (SSL) or 2077 (non-SSL) on your computer's firewall. As, I am unable to connect to this, i.e. on entering the given url in Nautilus address bar, it says 'Connection closed'. So, I believe the above this quoted is not correctly configured. • How do I get Ubuntu One on Win7 to authenticate my login?

  I just got a new computer running Windows 7 home premium, I used to have Ubuntu One working great on my Ubuntu desktop, but now, running win7, I know my login email address and password is correct, but it still says 'Authentication failed'. Googling the problem, looks like it may be because a device was removed from my list of devices, but the only device listed is my previous Ubuntu workstation, and nothing has been removed. I also checked the windows firewall and Ubuntu One is allowed on all interfaces on incoming and outgoing, and still authentication fails. Web login to my Ubuntu One account works fine.

• Site inaccessible by some people, fine for others [on hold]

  A couple of days ago my website www.howellphoto.com (hosted by one.com, wordpress site) started loading really slowly, and I have been unable to access any pages linked from the homepage. Several of my friends have found the same issue, yet many are able to access the site without problem. Live support at one.com have not been all that much help, requesting the ip addresses of a few people who cannot access the site, and saying it could be a firewall issue. Wordpress support (my site was created in prophotoblogs) have been better and have updated all plugins, etc, but can see no issue from their end. My main issue is that even if there was a local fix that I could do on my computer, this would not help wih any potential customers visiting my site for information! This is driving me crazy!!!   I was testing port connectivity on my machine because WoW (which uses TCP ports 3724, 6112, and 6881-6999) couldn't connect to the Internet. So I downloaded PFPortChecker application and ran it using Wine (v1.3). After I tried to check every port, it seems like they're not reachable/closed. Why is that? My firewall is disabled so why is this happening? How can I open these ports and how can I see if these ports are opened or not? Also, how can I determine which application is using them?

• Cannot access my own web page

  I am developing, learning and experimenting with php,html,javascript,flash and so on. Having web hosting and all of the cpanel, phpmyadmin and other utilities. One day, while updating information, connection between my computer and website just went down. I found out that it is only from this computer, where I cannot access anything. I don't know what is the reason I cannot access website, however this is what I have checked so far: Everything else opens normally, having problem only with my page. Cannot access FTP,cpanel or any kind of information related to the domain and hosting ipconfigs detects IP, but shows request timed out (so its not browser related) Turned off Firewall,AV, Rebooted computer Cleared caches,temp,cookies,histry with CCleaner Checked connectivity with both (wired,wireless) networks ISP has dynamic IP that has been changed about 3 times since issue Checked host file I am out of ideas and understanding what could cause this kind of issue, however couple minutes ago, found out that everything works with proxy server (when adding IP and port to the browsers) Can someone point out what should I check or try to get rid of this problem?

What applications should I install on the server? I need to transfer files to the server, I guess I would use FileZilla the same way I use it to upload files to my free website. But to have a username and password should I install an ftp server and create a user on Ubuntu? My website will send automated messages to users, so do I need to install a mail server as well? What other software should I install on the server apart from a firewall and an anti-virus? Should I partition the hard drive (3TB) and how? How partitions should I create and in what size for what applications? Btw I use Windows 7 on my computer, so I am basically a windows user.

Both of the functions should be implemented to support different protocol levels including application, transport, network and link layer. I only know a little in C#.Net programming to perform the IP packet sniffing. It is also known that packet filtering requires the techniques in WFP or LSP and packet sniffing in application requires dll hooking. Questions: I am not sure which programming language(either C++ or C#) would be suitable for designing such an application described above. • Unable to access media wiki pages from another computer?

  I have set up a web server in my Windows 7 with easyPHP. The website works fine when I browse the locally via localhost or 127.0.0.1. But, unable to open the site from another computer which is in the same LAN or in connected to my LAN. My local IP is in the 10.x.x.x range. The firewall turned off on my private network. I've also tried by changing Listen 127.0.0.1:80 to Listen 80 In httpd.conf but still i'm unable to access the media wiki from other machines. Unable to browse the pages from other machines using localhost or using IP address (Ex: 10.x.x.x). Could you please let me know your suggestions and comments?
