This feels very wrong, and I'd like to do something better!

  • Implimenting Zend MVC for my existing site-first step?

    Hi guys, OK-newbie question here. I'll try not to bombard SO with lots of questions-and hopefully this first one will show me the method I'll need to follow for subsequent conversions. I have a web-based calendar system that I developed, but it was coded for me procedurally (using PHP). I'm now working on learning OO and wanting to integrate this site into my localhost Zend Framework and slowly start converting parts to OO and the Zend Framework MVC process in particular. As I've said before, I understand that this will be a slow process, and when I'm done, I still probably won't have anything as OO friendly as if I had rewritten it from scratch, but I'd like to use this as a learning experience. So, I have dropped the whole site into my localhose/zend/Public folder, and everything is showing up great and linking to the database, etc. My question is-what would be the easiest first component to switch over to the MVC model? This site has a bit of everything-forms, login, authentication, some jQuery, etc. Can anyone point to a tutorial that would address what I'm trying to do? If indeed, a form would be one of the simpler things to switch, can someone walk me through those changes? Another idea is changing over all the header info, etc? Thanks for any pointers on where to start! EDIT: Also, I understand that SO is mainly for specific coding questions-I'm happy to share specific code, once I have an idea about which section to tackle first...

    I have a query to find all the phone numbers that match a partial expression such as "ends with 234" @matchingphones = Calls.find :all, :conditions => [ "(thephonenumber LIKE ?)", "%234"] The same phone number might be in the database several times, and so might be returned multiple times by this query if it matches. What I need is to know is UNIQUE phone numbers the query returns. For example if the database contains 000-111-1234 * 000-111-3333 000-111-2234 * 000-111-1234 * 000-111-4444 the existing query will return the 3 records marked with * (eg returns one phone number -1234 twice since it's in the database twice) what I need is a query that returns just once instance of each match, in this case 000-111-1234 * 000-111-2234 *

    Hello, I'm wondering what the best method is to convert a time string in the format of 00:00:00 to an integer or a long? My ultimate goal is to be able to convert a bunch of string times to integers/longs, add them to an array, and find the most recent time in the array... I'd appreciate any help, thanks! Ok, based on the answers, I have decided to go ahead and compare the strings directly. However, I am having some trouble. It is possible to have more than one "most recent" time, that is, if two times are equal. If that is the case, I want to add the index of both of those times to an ArrayList.     Suppose we have some named enums: enum MyEnum { FOO, BAR = 0x50 }; What I googled for is a script (any language) that scans all the headers in my project and generates a header with one function per enum. char* enum_to_string(MyEnum t); And a implementation with something like this: char* enum_to_string(MyEnum t){ switch(t){ case FOO: return "FOO"; case BAR: return "BAR"; default: return "INVALID ENUM"; } } The gotcha is really with typedefed enums, and unnamed C style enums. Does anybody know something for this? EDIT: The solution should not modify my source, except for the generated functions. The enums are in an API, so using the solutions proposed until now is just not an option.

    Hey there, this is part of a question i got in class, im at the final stretch but this has become a major problem. In it im given a certain value which is called the "gold value" and it is 40.5, this value changes in input. and i have these constants const int RUBIES_PER_DIAMOND = 5; // relative values. * const int EMERALDS_PER_RUBY = 2; const int GOLDS_PER_EMERALDS = 5; const int SILVERS_PER_GOLD = 4; const int COPPERS_PER_SILVER = 5; const int DIAMOND_VALUE = 50; // gold values. * const int RUBY_VALUE = 10; const int EMERALD_VALUE = 5; const float SILVER_VALUE = 0.25; const float COPPER_VALUE = 0.05; which means that basically for every diamond there are 5 rubies, and for every ruby there are 2 emeralds. So on and so forth. and the "gold value" for every diamond for example is 50 (diamond value = 50) this is how much one diamond is worth in golds. my problem is converting 40.5 into these diamonds and ruby values. I know the answer is 4rubies and 2silvers but how do i write the algorithm for this so that it gives the best estimate for every goldvalue that comes along?? please help!, im at my wits end

Compiler handles such convertions as errors and won't compile furthermore. It occurs only when I compile using Dev-C++ IDE, but when I compile the same code (using the compiler which Dev-C++ uses) such errors (even warnings) do not appears. How to mute errors of such types?
