  • Fluid CSS: floating column with max-width and overflow

    - by Ates Goral
I'm using a fluid layout in the new theme that I'm working on for my blog. I often blog about code and include <pre> blocks within the posts. The float: left column for the content area has a max-width so that the column stops at a certain maximum width and can also be shrunk: +----------+ +------+ | text | | text | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | +----------+ +------+ max shrunk What I want is for the <pre> elements to be wider than the text column so that I can fit 80-character-wrapped code without horizontal scroll bars. But I want the <pre> elements to overflow from the content area, without affecting its fluidity: +----------+ +------+ | text | | text | | | | | +----------+--+ +------+------+ | code | | code | +----------+--+ +------+------+ | | | | +----------+ +------+ max shrunk But, max-width stops being fluid once I insert the overhanging <pre> in there: the width of the column remains at the specified max-width even when I shrink the browser beyond that width. I've reproduced the issue with this bare-minimum scenario: <div style="float: left; max-width: 460px; border: 1px solid red"> <p>Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipisicing elit</p> <pre style="max-width: 700px; border: 1px solid blue"> function foo() { // Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipisicing elit } </pre> <p>Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipisicing elit</p> </div> I noticed that doing either of the following brings back the fluidity: Remove the <pre> (doh...) Remove the float: left The workaround I'm currently using is to insert the <pre> elements into "breaks" in the post column, so that the widths of the post segments and the <pre> segments are managed mutually exclusively: +----------+ +------+ | text | | text | +----------+ +------+ +-------------+ +-------------+ | code | | code | +-------------+ +-------------+ +----------+ +------+ +----------+ +------+ max shrunk But this forces me to insert additional closing and opening <div> elements into the post markup which I'd rather keep semantically pristine. Admittedly, I don't have a full grasp of how the box model works with floats with overflowing content, so I don't understand why the combination of float: left on the container and the <pre> inside it cripple the max-width of the container. I'm observing the same problem on Firefox/Chrome/Safari/Opera. IE6 (the crazy one) seems happy all the time. This also doesn't seem dependent on quirks/standards mode. Update I've done further testing to observe that max-width seems to get ignored when the element has a float: left. I glanced at the W3C box model chapter but couldn't immediately see an explicit mention of this behaviour. Any pointers?

  • Print.css issue in Webkit

    - by Andrew
The page in question is featured here: http://www.allwebcafe.com/news/news-article.php?id=78 For some reason, when a user attempts to print any article of this type from a Webkit-based browser (I've confirmed this in both Safari and Chrome), the pages are all blank. On the flip side, everything behaves as expected in both Firefox and Internet Explorer. Thoughts?

Hey Guys I'm basically building this page which obviously works fine in all browsers apart from IE6, where a small space appears below the cart. The background also has a gap in it in IE6, so I'm wondering what my be causing that, as it's probably related to the main issue. The html can be found here: http://bit.ly/94CjAJ If anyone could help I would REALLY appreciate it!!!! Many thanks

  • Flow diagram in html/css

    - by viraptor
Hi, is there some good way to create a flow / swimline diagram without resorting to scripting or tables? I'm talking about showing different hosts sending packets (so hosts on the X axis, time on the Y and arrows to the destination host). It seems like too much elements for tables (especially the arrows spanning multiple columns either way), but on the other hand, divs would be hard to position in the right place horizontally (they'd have to be basically aligned to a specified "column"). Is there any good way out? Any helper frameworks? (I don't want to do canvas stuff unless really needed)

  • jquery tabs css fluid layout

    - by Eagletrophy
hi guys, quick question. I have a tabbed interface for my site but I have all the parts of the site crashing into each other. How do I achieve a fluid layout where it simply resizes when the display is smaller. I read a few articles @ alistapart and made my containing div relative to the browser window and every other div within the d container relative and still nothing. any clues on what else I should be trying?

I do want the green background if I am hovering outside of the child element. • CSS, Centering an absolute <div> withing a 100% width <div>

    - by blackessej
    This shouldn't be hard...I have a menu and some content wrapped in a centered, liquid div. The content is positioned absolute. All I want to do is center #content-container. What am I missing here? #wrapper { max-width:100%; min-width:600px; min-height:100%; margin:0 auto; } #header { -moz-background-clip:border; -moz-background-origin:padding; -moz-background-size:auto auto; background-attachment:scroll; background-color:transparent; background-image:url(images/KMIAFS_banner.jpg); background-position:center top; background-repeat:no-repeat; height:150px; } #menu { margin-top:150px; clear:left; float:left; padding:0; border-top:6px solid #336699; width:100%; overflow:hidden; } #menu ul { float:left; margin:0; padding:0; list-style:none; position:relative; left:50%; text-align:center; } #menu ul li { display:block; float:left; list-style:none; margin:0; padding:0; position:relative; right:50%; } #menu ul li a { display:block; float:left; margin:0 1px 0 0; padding:30px 10px 6px 10px; background:#336699; text-decoration:none; color:#fff; } #menu ul li a:hover { padding:35px 10px 6px 10px; } #menu ul li.active a, #menu ul li.active a:hover { padding:40px 10px 6px 10px; } #content-container { top:225px; position:absolute; margin:0 auto; width:1000px; background-color:#fff; } #content { clear:left; float:left; width:610px; padding:20px 0; margin:0 0 0 30px; display:inline; } #content h2 { margin:0; } #aside { float:right; width:290px; padding:20px 0; margin:0 20px 0 0; display:inline; } #aside h3 { margin:0; } <div id="wrapper"> <div id="header"> <a id="box-link" href="index.html"></a> <div id="menu"> <ul> <li><a href="" title="Link01">Link01/a></li> <li><a href="" title="Link02">Link02</a></li> <li><a href="" title="Link03">Link03</a></li> <li><a href="" title="Link04">Link04</a></li> <li><a href="" title="Link05">Link05</a></li> <li><a href="" title="Link06">Link06</a></li> <li><a href="" title="Link07">Link07</a></li> <li><a href="" title="Link08">Link08</a></li> </ul> </div> <div id="content-container"> <div id="content"> <h2> Page heading </h2> <p> Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet consect etuer adipi scing elit sed diam nonummy nibh euismod tinunt ut laoreet dolore magna aliquam erat volut. • Better way to make side-by-side DIVs in CSS

    - by JoelFan
I have 2 DIV's that I want to be side-by-side under all circumstances. So far I am accomplishing it like this: <div style="float: left"> <table> ... </table> </div> <div style="float: right; overflow: scroll; width: 1000px"> <pre> ... </pre> </div> However, I don't like that I have to specify an absolute width in the 2nd div. I just want the 1st div to be the minimum width to display the table and 2nd div to take up the rest of the space without overflowing. Is there a better way?

  • jQuery/CSS height issues in IE/Chrome

    - by abysslogic
Hello again, I am back with more problems on my jQuery animated splash / website. You can see the splash which is working in most browsers at voidsync.com/test. The problems I am encountering with IE are the html, body, or #CONTAINER not adjusting to longer content such as in the Services or About pages - you will see the footer does not properly move to the bottom. Refreshing the browser after loading or completing the splash, the pages height adjusts properly to fit the content. Also this works in IE8 with JS disabled, so I know the problem is in there. (except in IE7 or IE8 compatibility mode, where the footer does not move down, period). I can post code here if needed, but im not sure if that is necessary or possible as you may need to see all of the source code to get the right idea. Bonus question The Hosting page has similar problems in Chrome, where the content height does not appear to resize properly on that one page, or the footer becomes overlapped which may be due to the styling used on table elements. Thanks in advance!

  • Quick question regarding CSS sprites and memory usage

    - by Andy E
Well, it's more to do with images and memory in general. If I use the same image multiple times on a page, will each image be consolidated in memory? Or will each image use a seperate amount of memory? I'm concerned about this because I'm building a skinning system for a Windows Desktop Gadget, and I'm looking at spriting the images in the default skin so that I can keep the file system looking clean. At the same time I want to try and keep the memory footprint to a minimum. If I end up with a single file containing 100 images and re-use that image 100 times across the gadget I don't want to have performance issues. Cheers.

  • tool to remove repeated css selectors

    - by Rees
I have 3 stylesheets that I have copied and pasted all into 1. As such, there are identical/repeated selectors. Is there an effective tool I can use to remove all repeated selectors if the style properties are identical? Another requirement is if the repeated selector exists once within a group of selectors and once as a standalone selector... the program will remove the selector AND properties of the standalone only (not delete the properties of the selector in a group). I have no clue if this is possible, but have just spent a few hours looking for one with no avail. Anyone know of anything close? Thanks in advance!

  • CSS UL removing indent in IE

    - by Jamie
See: Page I am having problems with IE, In FF and Chrome the navigation at the top displays fine. However in IE8 (with or without compatibility) the UL seems to indent from the left hand side, not each li just the whole li; despite declaring text-align:center; width:600px; margin:auto; padding-left:0;. Any ideas what could be causing this? Thanks, Jamie

  • CSS - Inheriting layered background images

    - by NNN
    CSS3 supports multiple background images, for example: foo { background-image: url(/i/image1.jpg), url(/i/image2.jpg); } I'd like to be able to add a secondary image to an element with a class though. So for example, say you have a nav menu. And each item has a background image. When a nav item is selected you want to layer on another background image. I do not see a way to 'add' a background image instead of redeclaring the whole background property. This is a pain because in order to do this with multi-backgrounds, you would have to write the base bg image over and over for each item if the items have unique images. Ideally I'd be able to do something like this: li { background: url(baseImage.jpg); } li.selected { background: url(selectedIndicator.jpg); } And have li.selected's end result appear the same if I did: li.selected { background: url(baseImage.jpg), url(selectedIndicator.jpg); } Update: I also tried the following with no luck (I believe backgrounds are not inherited..) li { background: url(baseImage.jpg), none; } li.selected { background: inherit, url(selectedIndicator.jpg); }

  • CSS - Class hierarchies???

    - by ClarkeyBoy
Hi, I have a site with a customer front end, which has a catalogue, homepage, contact page, about us page and so on. There is also an administration front end. I would like to implement a kind of hierarchy where any elements within an element with class "admin" will inherit properties set in the admin stylesheet and anything else inherits from the customer stylesheet. The purpose of this is so that admin can login on the admin front end, where they have access to lots of advanced stuff, but they can also navigate to the customer front end where they can execute basic tasks (such as hiding catalogue items, running a debug script if a customer reports an issue and so on). I would like all the admin tools on the customer front end to have properties taken from the admin stylesheet instead of the customer one - this will change the background colour and stuff. Is there any easy way to set up like namespaces to make things simpler, for example: .admin { .list { .list-subtitle { } .list-item { } } a { } } .customer { .list { .list-subtitle { } .list-item { } } a { } } I know it can be like: .admin .list {} .admin .list .list-item {} .admin a I just dont want to have to keep putting .admin all the time. Does anyone have any suggestions on how I could do this? I suppose I could write a .net class which sets this up and writes a stylesheet according to whats put into it, but then I would not be able to read the styles so easily add there would be all sorts of like Classes.Add(blah) and so on. Thanks in advance for any replies... Regards, Richard

  • css table column width not set

    - by bsreekanth
Hello, I'm trying to set the width of table column to a minimum value. The header row (th) was set white-space:nowrap to prevent wrapping. Now all the columns (including td rows) set to a width that of th. I tried to expand the size of smaller columns by setting it in the html as <th style="width:200px;"> and <td style="width:200px;">, but it has no effect. In firebug, in the style section, the width setting is active element.style { width:200px; } Still, the computed tab shows the width is less than 200px. • CSS Semi-fixed Element?

    - by Kelso.b
I remember seeing an example of this recently, but for the life of me I can't find the site. It was a button or something similar that sat in its place near the top of the screen, then when you scroll down it stays on screen. Now that I think about it, it must have been javascript-powered, but it looked really natural. Does anyone know of a site with this functionality or information on how to do it?
