• Hudson, C++ and UnitTest++

  Has anyone used Hudson as a Continuous-Integration server for a C++ project using UnitTest++ as a testing library? How exactly did you set it up? I know there have been several questions on Continuous Integration before, but I hope this one has a narrower scope. EDIT: I'll clarify a bit on what I'm looking for. I already have the build set to fail when the Unit-Tests fail. I'm looking for something like Hudson's JUnit support. UnitTest++ can create XML reports (See here). So, perhaps if someone knows how to translate these reports to be JUnit compatible, Hudson will know how to eat it up?

• Servlet request getparameter's performance

  Hi, I noticed that my app is very slow sometimes, so I've done some tests. It's a very simple web app. One servlet gets some parameters than stores them. Everything's fine except one thing. It takes too long to get a parameter for the first time. It doesn't matter which parameter I try to get, but for the first time it is very slow. The strange thing is this doesn't happen always. Sometimes getting a parameter for the first time is not slow. My code looks like this request.getParameter("paramName"); request.getParameter("paramName2"); request.getParameter("paramName3"); Getting "paramName" is slow. Getting the others is very fast. By slow I mean : 200-800 millisec By very fast I mean: ~0 millisec (in the code snippet, I didn't write the performance test, but I'm using System.currentTimeMillis())

• Junit exception test

  I have two tests to check the expected exception throw. I am using Junit 4 and has following syntax. @Test(expected=IllegalArgumentException.class) public void testSomething(){ .......... } One of the tests fail even though IllegalArgumentException is thrown and the other passes. I have noticed than when using the system from within IE (all versions) ASP.NET MVC will fail to bind the datetime to the action that send back the correct events. The sequence of events goes as follows. Calendar posts to server to get events Server ActionMethod accepts start and end date, automatically bound to datetime objects In every browser other than IE the start and end date come through as: Mon, 10 Jan 2011 00:00:00 GMT When IE posts the date, it comes through as Mon, 10 Jan 2011 00:00:00 UTC ASP.NET MVC 2 will then fail to automatically bind this to the action method parameter. The reader should run every 5 Minutes or whatever is reasonable. Writing should be as fast as possible. Reading should be fast but if it locks for about 300ms every 5 minutes, its fine. I've read many docs (Java concurrency in practice, effective java and so on), but i have the strong feeling that i need your advice to get it right. I hope i stated my problem clear and short enough to get valuable help.

• Loading embedded resource on Windows 7

  Hello, I have an app that works just fine on my WinXP machine. However, when I try running it on my Win7 machine, it fails whenever it tries to load an embedded resource. The resources are all there (I can see them using Reflector). The lines that fail are all of the form: Splash.Image = new Bitmap(typeof(ContainerForm).Assembly.GetManifestResourceStream("SplashTest.Resources.Logo.gif")); And they all fail with the same exception: Exception='System.ArgumentException: Parameter is not valid. at System.Drawing.Bitmap..ctor(Stream stream) I don't understand why this is not working on my Win7 machine but does on my usual WinXP dev machine. Any ideas?

• WPF: Binding items added to UserControl's exposed children

  I have a user control that allows items to be added to it by exposing a Grid's Children property. Any control I add shows up fine but when I try to bind a property on the added item to a control in the main window nothing happens (example): <TextBox Name="txtTest" Text="Success!" /> <mycontrols:CustomUserControl.ExposedGridChildren> <TextBox Text="{Binding ElementName=txtTest, Path=Text, FallbackValue=fail}"/> </mycontrols:CustomUserControl.ExposedGridChildren> This example always results in the TextBox's text showing "fail". Here is how I'm exposing the children in the user control: public UIElementCollection ExposedGridChildren { get { return grdContainer.Children; } } Any thoughts? Is it a scope issue? • Is it actually possible to connect to ActiveMQ via XMPP and query/browse queues using "AciveMQ.Agen

  I tried what I think are 4 most popular XMPP (aka "Jabber") clients (Spark, Pidgin, Psi, Pandion) to connect to ActiveMQ instance (Apache ActiveMQ ver. 5.3.0) on XMMP connector with an idea to use the "AciveMQ.Agent chatroom" for querying queues/etc and no success at all Some of them fail with 'Unknown error', some don't fail but kind of "hang"... interestingly, some communication does indeed reach the ActiveMQ side, because when I close a client it spits an exception "could not close" or something to that effect... and if I try "register new user" option (present on most clients" the ActiveMQ also spits some most cryptic warning message But I was never able to get to the point when I could see or specify "ActiveMQ.Agent" as chatroom and issue any commands... Before I waste any more time on this curious feature, I would like to hear whether anyone had any success with it? Thank you! PS: BTW, the book "ActiveMQ in Action book" http://www.manning.com/snyder/ shows that it is apparently works and is very easy using some Mac client (AdiumX), but I wanted it on a Windows PC ;)

• How can I find file system concurrency issues ?

  I have an application running on Linux, and I find myself wanting windows (!). The problem is that every 1000 times or so I run into concurrency problems that are consistent with concurrent reading/writing of files. I am fairly sure that this behavior would be prohibited by file locking under Windows, but I don't have any sufficiently fast windows box to check. There is simply too much file access (too much data) to expect strace to work reliably - the sheer volume of output is likely to change the problem too. It also happens on different files every time. Ideally I would like to change/reconfigure the linux file system to be more restrictive (as in fail-fast) wrt concurrent access. Are there any tools/settings I can use to achieve this ?

The condition would check if a publish is occurring and check if the build is a debug build, then do something like run an external tool or otherwise interrupt the build process or cause it to fail. • Jenkins plugin for different types of slaves

  We have some tests that need to be run on multiple types of specific hardware. Its possible that these tests might pass on some pieces of hardware but fail on others, and we want to know where they work and where they fail. So, for certain tests, we would like to provide a list of hardware they need to be tested on. We'd like to put all the needed hardware in a pool that Jenkins has access to, and then have Jenkins run the right tests on the right hardware, depending on the hardware list that comes with the test. And of course we'd like to keep track of which test worked where. Is there a plugin for Jenkins to be able to handle this sort of thing? Has anyone else solved this sort of problem?

• What is the proper way to specify a path to 'app' in a Rails plugin?

  This question came about because the cells gem specifies template directories using File.join('app','cells'). That works fine until you run Rails as a daemon (scripts/server -d). The daemon switches directories to / which leaves the cells template paths pointing to the wrong absolute path. My solution was to set the default paths to File.join(RAILS_ROOT, 'app', 'cells'). This works in Rails, but the unit tests for the plugin fail because RAILS_ROOT isn't defined. Using File.join(File.dirname(__FILE__),'..' ... also works but requires about 6 levels of '..' which seems wrong. So my question is what is the proper way to specify the path to a directory under 'app' in a Rails plugin? Or is there something else wrong that would cause daemonizing Rails to fail to find the relative paths?

  I have a new client with an old website using massive amounts of tables and inline styles. Some page weigh over 3MB due to huge backgrounds and other large images. I suggested they at least compress the files to speed up the site but they're convinced it's fast. Since they have 13Mbit connection at the office everything seems fast. I'm looking for a tweak, program or web app capable of loading pages at varying speeds so they understand how it might load for slower DSL or (gasp) dialup users. Thanks for any help!

• Understanding run time code interpretation and execution

  I'm creating a game in XNA and was thinking of creating my own scripting language (extremely simple mind you). I know there's better ways to go about this (and that I'm reinventing the wheel), but I want the learning experience more than to be productive and fast. When confronted with code at run time, from what I understand, the usual approach is to parse into a machine code or byte code or something else that is actually executable and then execute that, right? But, for instance, when Chrome first came out they said their JavaScript engine was fast because it compiles the JavaScript into machine code. This implies other engines weren't compiling into machine code. I'd prefer not compiling to a lower language, so are there any known modern techniques for parsing and executing code without compiling to low level? Perhaps something like parsing the code into some sort of tree, branching through the tree, and comparing each symbol and calling some function that handles that symbol? (Wild guessing and stabbing in the dark)

• Jquery SimpleModal flickers in Firefox

  I'm using SimpleModal plugin for Jquery and I have a weird problem with Firefox ( other browsers work fine: Chrome, Safari, Opera, IE). What happens is when I click on the button that launches the modal dialog, before showing the modal (and the fadeIn of the overlay), there is a quick "flicker", less than half a second. (It's longer on my slower PC). Weird thing is, it didn't happen in Firefox 3.5.2, but when I upgraded to 3.6.3, I got the flicker. Any ideas? • UISwitch quick toggle multiple times.

  I was playing around my app and I was toggling a UISwitch really fast (who can resist?). So, I toggled it really fast for 10-15 times, an array that should contain the data from the table view cell that I have my switch in either has extra copies of the same cell sometimes, just one copy (the correct case) a few times and no data in it at all some times. The app works fine if it's toggled at normal speed. I'm pretty sure this scenario won't really happen with my users, but I'm still curious as to why it's happening. Thanks, Teja

• A good approach to db planing for reporting service

  The scenario: Big system (~200 tables). 60,000 users. Complex reports that will require me to do multiple queries for each report and even those will be complex queries with inner queries all over the place + some processing in PHP. I have seen an approach, which I am not sure about: Having one centralized, de-normalized, table that registers any activity in the system which is reportable. This table will hold mostly foreign keys, so she should be fairly compact and fast. So, for example (My system is a virtual learning management system), A user enrolls to course, the table stores the user id, date, course id, organization id, activity type (enrollment). Of course I also store this data in a normalized DB, which the actual application uses. Pros I see: easy, maintainable queries and code to process data and fast retrieval. Cons: there is a danger of the de-normalized table to be out of sync with the real DB. Is this approach worth considering, or (preferably from experience) is total $#%#%t?
