  Hello, I want to learn the operating system. How it works. I don't want to make my own operating system. I just want to learn how it works. As I can find out source code of any open source OS. But how to start. Like starting from the first elementary kernel (whatever it is). Somebody suggested I try to implement Linux from scratch etc. Please guide me in a proper way. I want to know about the proper path to follow. I am ready to invest three to four years just to understand the basics. I have good fundamentals of C, C++, PHP, OOP and compiler design.

• How can I create an enum using numbers?

  Is it possible to make an enum using just numbers in C#? In my program I have a variable, Gain, that can only be set to 1, 2, 4, and 8. I am using a propertygrid control to display and set this value. If I were to create an enum like this... private enum GainValues {One, Two, Four, Eight} and I made my gain variable of type GainValues then the drop-down list in the propertygrid would only show the available values for the gain variable. The problem is I want the gain values to read numerically an not as words. But I can not create an enum like this: private enum GainValues {1,2,4,8} So is there another way of doing this? Perhaps creating a custom type?

• C# Launcher program(ConsoleApp) that launches other executables

  I've written a launcher program that fires off a given number of executables, with the following code: Process.Start(strPath2EXE); The problem I'm running into is it seems I'm being limited to launching only about four copies of the executable. Is there a different way I can launch the executables without this limit? I'm hoping to run 10+ concurrently. Here is the error from the event log: EventType clr20r3, P1 launcher.exe, P2 1.0.0.0, P3 4bec3901, P4 system, P5 2.0.0.0, P6 4889de7a, P7 39f5, P8 288, P9 system.componentmodel.win32, P10 NIL.

• add navigation buttons with highlight to jQuery Cycle

  I am currently using jQuery cycle to display featured projects. I currently have the next and prev buttons setup, I also have four rounded buttons in between. I would like them to function as both a link to the corresponding slide as well as add a class to the button who's slide is currently active. I have the nav setup and the active class setup I just need the jQuery. You can see the code at http://jjnold.com/dev in the main slider at the top. I was thinking it's probably something like this to assign the class but I'm not sure how to link to the corresponding slide and have them work together. • Creating a relative path to a Database in Asp.net for a library

  In school I am part of a team of four working to create a GUI to translate the paper records of a made-up company and their functionality to a digital format. We're using an ASP.NET website for this purpose. Basically we use stored procedures and C# classes to represent the database. The folder we're using for the project contains the site and the libraries in separate folders. If I try to open the site from the folder containing both these elements the site will not run. I want to know if there is some way I can set up a relative path to the database in the Settings.Settings.cs file (or by some other means) of my libraries so I don't have to constantly change the database location for the connection string value every time we move the project. I suppose I should also mention that the database is in an App_Data folder.

  I need to produce a string for use in an query e.g. SELECT whatever from Keywords.word IN (here); At the moment I have string which could be $search = "one word or four"; or $search = "one"; or $search = "one one"; I need to validate this into some acceptable for my query. I want a unique list of words, separated with a comma up to a maximum of three. This is what I have so far. $array = explode(" ",$search); $unique = array_unique ($array); I'm sure there must be a quicker way than evaluating each of the items for blank and selecting the first three.

• after dup2, stream still contains old contents?

  so if I do: dup2(0, backup); // backup stdin dup2(somefile, 0); // somefile has four lines of content fgets(...stdin); // consume one line fgets(....stdin); // consume two lines dup2(backup, 0); // switch stdin back to keyboard I am finding at this point.. stdin still contains the two lines I haven't consumed. Why is that? Because there is just one buffer no matter how many times you redirect? How do I get rid of the two lines left but still remember where I was in the somefile stream when I want to go back to it?

  Hi everyone, I need to retrieve data (vehicle details, in this case) from a MySQL table tabled and then loop through the results to generate separate lists for each category of vehicle. Is there a simple way to do this without having to have a SELECT statement for each type of vehicle? What's the easiest way to go about this in C# using .Net 3.5?

• Can't INSERT INTO SELECT into a table with identity column

  In SQL server, I'm using a table variable and when done manipulating it I want to insert its values into a real table that has an identity column which is also the PK. The table variable I'm making has two columns; the physical table has four, the first of which is the identity column, an integer IK. The data types for the columns I want to insert are the same as the target columns' data types. INSERT INTO [dbo].[Message] ([Name], [Type]) SELECT DISTINCT [Code],[MessageType] FROM @TempTableVariable END This fails with Cannot insert duplicate key row in object 'dbo.Message' with unique index 'IX_Message_Id'. The duplicate key value is (ApplicationSelection). But when trying to insert just Values (...) it works ok. How do I get it right?

  I have a large main method in an IO class which creates objects from four different classes in my program (which all use one another to some extent). My main method takes all info in using a scanner, from the console window, and uses this info to call the constructors and methods in the other classes. As this is my first full program in Java I have been focussed on making the main method work via the console, without properly considering file input and output. I cannot see an easy way of making that work now. Ideally what I require is some way of writing everything I input to the console while running the main method to a file, in a format that can be read again and inputed back through the main method? I have refrained from posting the main method as it is 250+ lines long, but will post any relevant parts of it if required. Any help appreciated

  I have a classified website, with pretty sophisticated searching, and I am about to implement a function where the last three queries is displayed for the user, so that the user can go back easier through the queries. This because for each query the user has to provide a lot of input. I have four questions for you: I wonder, how can I save the actual query (SELECT * FROM etc etc)...? Do I need to add some form of encryption to be on the safe side? How will this affect performance? (I don't like the fact that cookies slow websites down) Anything else to think about? • Python - read numbers from text file and put into list

  So like the title says im starting to learn some python and im having trouble picking up on this technique. What I need to accomplish is to read in some numbers and store them in a list. The text file looks like the following: 0 0 3 50 50 100 4 20 Basically these are coordinates and directions to be used for python's turtle to make shapes. I got that part down the only problem is getting them in a correct format. So what I can not figure out is how to get those numbers from the file into [ [0, 0, 3, 50], [50, 100, 4, 20] ] A list, with each four coordinates being a list in that one big list. • Physical storage of data in Access 2007

  I've been trying to estimate the size of an Access table with a certain number of records. It has 4 Longs (4 bytes each), and a Currency (8 bytes). In theory: 1 Record = 24 bytes, 500,000 = ~11.5MB However, the accdb file (even after compacting) increases by almost 30MB (~61 bytes per record). A few extra bytes for padding wouldn't be so bad, but 2.5X seems a bit excessive - even for Microsoft bloat. What's with the discrepancy? The four longs are compound keys, would that matter?

  I'm building a MySQL query but I can't seem to get it right. I have four tables: - customers - orders - sales_rates - purchase_rates There is a 1:n relation 'customernr' between customers and orders. There is a 1:n relation 'ordernr' between orders and sales_rates. There is a 1:n relation 'ordernr' between orders and purchase_rates. What I would like to do is produce an output of all customers with their total purchase and sales amounts. So far I have the following query. SELECT c.customernr, c.customer_name, SUM(sr.sales_price) AS sales_price, SUM(pr.purchase_price) AS purchase_price FROM orders o, customers c, sales_rates sr, purchase_rates pr WHERE o.customernr = c.customernr AND o.ordernr = sr.ordernr AND o.ordernr = pr.ordernr GROUP BY k.bedrijfsnaam The result of the sales_price and purchase_price is far too high. I seem to be getting double counts. What am I doing wrong? Is it possible to perform this in a single query? Thank for your response!
