• How can I start the right way from the beginning in learning web development?

  Well, I know I have to learn many things such as HTML, JavaScript, CSS, PHP, ASP.NET, SQL, etc. However, I don't know if I start, for example, learning ASP.NET before I learn HTML and CSS then would I say in the near future that it was better for me if i start learning another thing earlier so I don't need to come back and learn it now! • Accenture Launches Smart Grid Data Management Platform

  Accenture announced today it has launched the Accenture Intelligent Network Data Enterprise (INDE), a data management platform to help utilities design, deploy and manage smart grids. INDE's functionality can be enabled by an array of third party technologies. In addition, Accenture plans to offer utilities the option of implementing the INDE solution based on a pre-configured suite of Oracle technologies. The Oracle-based version of INDE will accelerate the design of smart grids and help reduce the costs and risks associated with smart grid implementation. Stephan Scholl, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Oracle Utilities said, "Oracle and Accenture share a common vision of how the smart grid will enable more efficient energy choices for utilities and their customers. • .NET Reflector 7 Released

  This new version fixes a number of bugs and adds support for more high level C# features such as iterator blocks. A new tabbed browsing model was added and Jason Haley's PowerCommands add-in was included as an exploratory step for future versions. Maybe you can still get one of the give away licenses that Red Gate provided to communities and individuals.

• 2D Tile-Based Concept Art App

  I'm making a bunch of 2D games (now and in the near future) that use a 2D, RPG-like interface. I would like to be able to quickly paint tiles down and drop character sprites to create concept art. Sure, I could do it in GIMP or Photoshop. But that would require manually adding each tile, layering on more tiles, cutting and pasting particular character sprites, etc. and I really don't need that level of granularity; I need a quick and fast way to churn out concept art. Is there a tool that I can use for this? Perhaps some sort of 2D tile editor which lets me draw sprites and tiles given that I can provide the graphics files.

• Five new junior developers and lots of complex tasks. What's now?

  Our company has hired five new junior developers to help me to developer our product. Unfortunately the new features and incoming bug fixes usually require deeper knowledge than a recently graduated developer usually has (threading/concurrency, debugging performance bottlenecks in a complex system, etc.) Delegating (and planning) tasks which they (probably) can solve, answering their questions, mentoring/managing them, reviewing their code use up all of my time and I often feel that I could solve the issues less time than the whole delegating process takes (counting only my time). In addition I don't have time to solve the tasks which require deeper system knowledge/more advanced skills and it does not seem that it will change in the near future. So, what's now? What should I do to use their and my time effectively?

• Windows Phone 8 development on Windows 7 - is it or will be possible?

  I was trying to install Windows Phone 8 SDK on my Windows 7 machine and it hit me with the 'supported only on Windows 8' message. I actually wanted to develop Phone 7.5 apps on Visual Studio 2012, impossible thing with the 7.1 SDK, so I thought 8 SDK will do the job. As if it was not enough that the 8 SDK was controversial upon release, now that it's generally available, to me it seems like a horrible decision to make it available only for Windows 8, because in my humble opinion, no serious and sane developer will install Windows 8 ever, or at least in the near future, just because of the Metro UI. So, anyone knows any workarounds for developing Windows Phone 8 on Windows 7, or at least develop for 7.5 but using Visual Studio 2012?

• Open XML SDK 2 Released

Permalink This post is a little late since the SDK was released about a week ago.  At PSC we have been using the Open XML SDK 2 since its earliest beta.  It is a very powerful tool for generating documents without using the Office DLLs.  It is also the main technology that I have been working with for the last six months.  I would suggest giving it a try.  Stay tuned here.  In the near future I will be presenting at different locations on this and other document generation technologies. • ASP.NET AJAX and my axe!

  So, I'm seriously considering axing ASP.NET AJAX from my future projects as I honestly feel it's too bloated, and at times convoluted. I'm also starting to feel it is a dying library in the .NET framework as I hardly see any quality components from the open-source community. All the kick-ass components are usually equally bloated commercial components... It was cool at first, but now I tend to get annoyed with it more than anything else. I'm planning on switching over to the jQuery library as just about everything in ASP.NET AJAX is often easily achievable with jQuery, and, more often than not, more graceful of a solution that ASP.NET AJAX and it has a much stronger open-source community. Perhaps, it's just me, but do you feel the same way about ASP.NET AJAX? How was/is your experience working with ASP.NET AJAX?

• Setting Meta tags for a website

  I have made an Asp.net MVC website and am not well versed about SEO techniques, so I want a little guidance in setting the appropriate meta tags for the website. My website is dynamic and has two types of Pages: Category and Product There are two tables in the database for Category and Product. Looking into the future, I added these fields beforehand to both the tables : -- MetaTitle--MetaDescription--MetaKeywords On both the Category and Product pages, these values are retrieved and set as following <meta name="description" content="@ViewBag.MetaDescription" /> <meta name="title" content="@ViewBag.MetaTitle" /> <meta name="keywords" content="@ViewBag.MetaKeywords" /> For better SEO how will you set up these meta tags. Will you include the site name in all three fields ? Right now, the Product page's MetaTitle, MetaDescription and MetaKeywords don't include the website name. If possible, can you provide me sample values that should be set for better SEO performance keeping the business name in mind.

• Evil Spam Emails caused hosting account suspension!

  We have a couple domains hosted rackservers.com.au. Recently our account go suspended without any notice. I then filed a ticket and soon got the answer:'There are some one forging email accounts from your domain, and they have been sending out spam emails. So we do not want you here anymore, take your backup and go.' I am quite shocked by such attitude and more confused by the actions we should take under such situation. Should I take my back up and go? Should I ask them for more details? How can I prevent this from happening again in the future?

• Using heavyweight ORM implementation for light based games

  I'm just about to engulf myself in an MVC-based/Component architecture in C#, using MySQL's connector/Net for the data storage, and probably some NHibernate/FluentNHibernate Object-relational-mapping to map out the data structure. The goal is to build a scalable 2D RPG. Then I think about it...and I can't help but think this seems a little "heavy weight" for a 2D RPG, especially one which, while I plan to incorporate a lot of functionality and entertaining gameplay, may be ported to something like Windows Phone or Android in the future. Yet, on the other hand even a 2-Dimensional RPG can become very complicated, and therefore must incorporate a lot of functionality. While this can be accomplished with text/XML/JSON for data storage, is there a better way? Is something such as Object-Relational-Mapping useful in such an application? So, what do you think? Would you say that there is a place for such technologies? I don't know what to think...

• Ubuntu 14.04 ATI/Intel Hybrid Graphics DPM

  I have a Dell Inspiron 3521 with hybrid ATI/Intel graphics. (AMD Radeon 7670M / Intel HD 4000) using Ubuntu 14.04 with open source drivers for graphics. (xserver-xorg-video-ati) I read that Ubuntu 14.04 with the linux kernel version 3.13 supports auto switching between graphics and dynamic power management. Is it correct? Anyway, if it is true, I dont think that it is working in my system , because fan runs constantly and battery backup is less than 2 hours. lspci | grep -i vga 00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 3rd Gen Core processor Graphics Controller (rev 09) 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] Thames [Radeon HD 7500M/7600M Series] (rev ff) What should I do? Is there any hope that this gets fixed in future kernels?

• Morgan Stanley chooses Solaris 11 to run cloud file services

  At the EAKC2012 Conference last week in Edinburg, Robert Milkowski, Unix engineer at Morgan Stanley, presented on deploying OpenAFS on Solaris 11. It makes a great proofpoint on how ZFS and DTrace gives a definite advantage to Solaris over Linux to run AFS distributed file system services, the "cloud file system" as it calls it in his blog. Mike used ZFS to achieve a 2-3x compression ratio on data and greatly lower the TCA and TCO of the storage subsystem, and DTrace to root-cause scalability bottlenecks and improve performance. As future ideas, Mike is looking at leveraging more Solaris features like Zones, ZFS Dedup, SSD for ZFS, etc.

• Convince developer to use IDE

  There is a developer, lets call him John (currently on probationary period) in company(pretty small company approx. 10 persons, 3 developers, one of them works long in this company know business process around and can be consider as Team leader) who didn't want to use any IDE at all(he is using some text editor). Application this team working on is medium size Java application with Spring Hibernate technology stack and refactoring/adding new features to launch new version of that application in near future. John performance working without IDE on this application is lower then desirable, team leader's (lets call him Bill) assumption is this happens because John is not using IDE. Bill try to persuade John to use IDE, but this idea meets a lot of resistance and main reason is "I want to be in total control of what I am doing, so I need to write all code by myself". How can Bill convince John to try to use IDE? (considering the fact what Bill already protected John from company owner several complaints about John performance)

  After a recent talk I gave on C++ AMP, one attendee was complaining that they were not familiar with lambdas and another found templates hard to parse. In case you are in the same boat, I thought I'd gather some essential reading material for you (also gives me one link to use in the future for referring people to ;-) Lambdas are available (in some shape or form) in all modern languages, so do yourself a favor and learn about them: Lambda Expressions in C++ (and also syntax and examples) Watch Herb Sutter's full length session on lambdas at PDC 2010 Templates, have been around in modern languages for even longer than lambdas (e.g. Generics in .NET), so again go dive in: Templates topic with full table of contents linking to subtopics In fact, why don't you refresh your knowledge and read the entire msdn C++ Language Reference – that's what I am doing! • Do I need to know servlets and JSP to learn spring or hibernate or any other java web frameworks?

  I've been asking a lot of people where to start learning java web development, I already know core java (Threading,Generics,Collections, a little experience with (JDBC)) but I do not know JSPs and servlets. I did my fair share of development with several web based applications using PHP for server-side and HTML,CSS,Javascript,HTML5 for client side. Most people that I asked told me to jump right ahead to Hibernate while some told me that I do not need to learn servlets and jsps and I should immediately study the Spring framework. Is this true? do I not need to learn servlets and JSPs to learn hibernate or Spring? All of their answers confused me and now I am completely lost what to learn or study. I feel that if I skipped learning JSP and servlets I would missed a lot of important concepts that will surely help me in the future. So the question, do I need to have foundation/know servlets and JSP to learn spring or hibernate or any other java web frameworks.?
