    Brand new to Ubuntu and PCs for that matter. I've been a Mac user all my life but wanted to try Ubuntu on the cheap, so I bought an Acer Laptop 5253-BZ893 and i got Ubuntu 10.10 installed with no problem. The only problem i have is, that i get no network connection options, wired or wireless. I just get No Network Devices Available. The computer came with Windows 7 installed and i am able to connect to my wireless network fine using Windows, so i know the computer works. Also i've been searching forums and google for hours trying to figure out why I can't get a network connection in Ubuntu but so far no luck. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

  • Can't control connection bit rate using iwconfig with Atheros TL-WN821N (AR7010)

    I'm trying to reduce the connection bit rate on my Atheros TP-Link TL-WN821N v3 usb wifi adapter due to frequent instability issues (reported connection speed goes down to 1Mb/s and I have to physically reconnect the adapter to regain a connection). I know this is a common problem with this device, and I have tried everything I can think of to fix it, including using drivers from linux-backports; compiling and installing a custom firmware (following instructions on https://wiki.debian.org/ath9k_htc#fw-free) and (as a last resort) using ndiswrapper. When using ndiswrapper, the wifi adapter is stable and operates in g mode at 54Mb/s (whilst when using the default ath9k_htc module, the adapter connects in n mode and the bit rate fluctuates constantly). Unfortunately, with this setup I have to run my processor using only one core, since using SMP with ndiswrapper causes a kernel oops on my system. So I want to lock my bit rate to 54Mb/s (or less, if need be) for connection stability, using the ath9k_htc module. I've tried 'sudo iwconfig wlan0 rate 54M'; the command runs with no error but when I check the bit rate with 'sudo iwlist wlan0 bitrate' the command returns: wlan0 unknown bit-rate information. Current Bit Rate:78 Mb/s Any ideas? Here's some info (hopefully relevant) on my setup: Xubuntu (12.04.3) 64bit (kernel 3.2.0-55.85-generic) using Network Manager.     After upgrading to ubuntu 11.10 the speed of my internet connection has considerably reduced. I surf on internet using a wireless usb adapter Digicom Wireless 11n 300m which works with rt2800usb driver. The fact is, on the installation cd there's no tracks of that driver but instead of it there is another one called rt2870 which I tried to load using ndiswraper, but it did not recognize any hardware. I'm not sure the solution of my problem is simply changing the driver, but I have no other ideas. Can anyone help me?

    I am trying to configure an Ubuntu 10.04 desktop edition as a server. I currently have the DHCP server working through eth0. My problem is that I only have one Ethernet port, and am receiving Internet though a mobile hotspot on my phone through wlan0, and whenever I attempt to connect through wlan0 and eth0 I am unable to access the Internet through the server or the clients. When I disconnect from eth0 I then regain access. I have searched extensively for a solution, and have come up short. Any help is appreciated.

    Can't figure this one out. When you connect to a wireless network (like an ad-hoc), it'll create a networkname 1 connection. After something changes, it makes a networkname 2 connection. And this goes on and on. Now I'm at connection ~23, at the home connection I'm at ~2 and ~5. Is there a way to clean these out? Couldn't find where Win stores such profiles.

    I Need to create connection between ios to windows by using socket programming in ios. I'm trying to to use an application to communicate with Windows via sockets. At the minimum, I'm trying to at least figure out how I can create a connection from the iPhone (maybe using the iPhone to ping the Windows machine?) I'm not really clear on where I need to start. I'm pretty new to iOS development in general, and brand new to socket/network programming. I've tried several tutorials that haven't gotten me far. My goal is: Connect to a server via sockets (the server will be a Windows machine with a service waiting for incoming connections from the iPhone) If possible, I would like to write/build the client piece first, but I have been lost thus far. Hopefully the nice folks in the SO community can lend a hand and point me in the right direction.

    I'm on 12.04, I upgraded a month ago from Windows 7 on my Sony VAIO. Everything is great except after the upgrade, I encountered Internet connectivity issues. When browsing the web or loading videos, my Internet will stop working in the middle and come back after a period of 30 seconds to 2 minutes or sometimes it just won't and I'll have to disconnect and re-connect to the network. I've noticed the issue when sending e-mails as well, they just won't send at all. It says sending request and the circle keeps spinning slowly until I get to a page where it says the page wouldn't load and gives me the reason DNS error. I tried setting OpenDNS as my DNS provider but that didn't help.

  • Using Virtualbox Bridge Networking fails connection from Guest OS to Oracle XE running on Host

    I am trying to make a JDBC connection from a VirtualBox Ubuntu Guest OS to an Oracle XE database running o Host. However, the connection is refused. Here are the details of my environment: VirtualBox: 4.1.4 Host OS: Windows 7 Guest OS: Ubuntu server 11.4 Networking mode: Bridged network Oracle XE database running on Host Issue: WebLogic server runs on the Ubuntu virtualbox. It attempts to connect to an Oracle XE database running on the Host OS (windows 7) with listening port 1521. On the Guest OS (Ubuntu), I am able to ping the Host computer from the Guest OS. However, when I configured a JDBC data source on the WebLogic server on the Guest OS to connect to the Oracle XE, connection took a long time, and eventually I received an "IO Exception: The Network Adapter could not establish the connection". When I tried "telnet host-ip 1521", no connection was established. With Bridge networking, I can make bi-directional connections between the host and the guest OS (e.g. connection through ssh and ftp). Is there anything I missed in the setup of Bridge networking and the guest/host OS? Note that I was able to make the same connection within a normal networking environment (i.e. not using virtual box). I am not sure whether Bridge networking is a good option for the work described above. Should I use host-only networking mode? If so, any specific configurations I need to perform? I read through the Virtual box document on setting up the host-only network, however, it lacks of details. I followed the procedures described in the manual, and couldn't even connect to the host. Could some experts here enlighten me on this issue? Much appreciated. Licheng

    I have usb-tethering enabled in my phone. It works fine with Vista. When I plug my phone into my Tecra 8000 laptop running Xubuntu, dmesg shows: "usb 1-1: new full speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 8". I see that the OS has detected it as a storage device, but I can't get it to function correctly as a network device. /dev/us* shows no usb0, but it does show /dev/usbdev1.1_ep00 /dev/usbdev1.1_ep81 /dev/usbdev1.8_ep00 ... usbdev1.8_ep83. I could just use the wireless tether app for android, but I can't get my Netgear wg511 v2 (made in China) wireless card to work in this laptop either. But that's another post for later.

  • Two NIC's 2 Internet Connections, 1 Windows Server 2008 RC2, Routing help required

    Hello, I have a Windows 2008 server and 4 other client machines on my home network. I have two internet connections. The main connection is setup with a home router and DHCP on that for all the clients on the network. The secondary connection is just a cable modem which is plugged directly into the server. Local Area Connection: This NIC has an external IP and is connected to the Cable Modem. Local Area Connection 2: This NIC has an internal IP (192.168.0.102) and allows access to all the internal computers. It also has internet access via the local router. So here lies the problem, I want to use the Cable connection on the server for the internet traffic (so that the traffic for server/clients are seperated) but I also need to maintain local access. I am wondering how to make it so that all the internet traffic goes via that NIC because at the moment it goes through the local NIC. As a secondary problem I would also like to forward the connection of one application used by the clients via the server and the cable/server internet because of poor routing for it on the main connection.
