• Do not expose enum in WCF response

  We had a backward compatibility problem in WCF client, when in Service application a new value was added to one of enums. We discussed different ways to avoid this backward compatibility issues, and I found recommendation do not expose enum in wcf response in http://stackoverflow.com/a/788281/52277.It is still required to create new versions of our service interfaces to replace each enum fields with string field, that expects only documented values, and describe, what should be default behavior, if field has an unexpected value.

• Install Windows7 on drive with Ubuntu 12.04 already on. Is my plan good?

  I have Ubuntu 12.04 working fine, but need W7 occasionally. I just wanted to check that my plan for installing would work? Any help appreciated. Have I missed something? I'm concerned as to what the 776MB is that will be overwritten by the change to NTFS. It seems large for just the MBR? I've searched a lot in Google and this process works everywhere, but I don't know it doesn't work here...thanks for your help...

• StringBuffer behavior in LWJGL

  Okay, I've been programming in Java for about ten years, but am entirely new to LWJGL. I have a specific problem whilst attempting to create a text console. I have built a class meant to abstract input polling to it, which (in theory) captures key presses from the Keyboard object and appends them to a StringBuilder/StringBuffer, then retrieves the completed string after receiving the ENTER key. The problem is, after I trigger the String return (currently with ESCAPE), and attempt to print it to System.out, I consistently get a blank line. I can get an appropriate string length, and I can even sample a single character out of it and get complete accuracy, but it never prints the actual string. I could swear that LWJGL slipped some kind of thread-safety trick in while I wasn't looking. • Remote Access to Owncloud Server

  I'm currently trying to setup my own own-cloud server, and I've got it fully installed, configured, and accessible from within my own local network. I cannot figure out how to access it from the outside. So far I've: Successfully setup port-forwarding on my local router. I've done so via 'single port forwarding' and 'port range forwarding' Ports 80, 443, 3306 (Apache-Full and MySQL) Successfully obtained my external IP address. I've also tested this magic number from within the network at #insertIPhere/owncloud and it did work. Successfully setup the server using SQLite Successfully setup the server using MySQL Created the following exceptions in my firewall: Allow In Port 80 (Apache Full) Allow In Port 443 (Apache Full) Allow In Port 3306 (MySQL) Tried connecting from several different remote networks, as to troubleshoot something on their end As far as trying to access it, I'm doing so through Google-Chrome and Mozilla Firefox trying to reach the server through #insertIPhere/owncloud using the above public IP address. So what have I missed, and how do I access my server from outside? Thanks in advance for your help and time, and I apologize in advance for what will probably result in my noobish mistake in networking. I've looked at the official documentation. • css - use universal '*' selector vs. html or body selector?

  Applying styles to the body tag will be applied to the whole page, so body { font-family: Verdana } will be applied to the whole page. This could also be done with * {font-family: Verdana} which would apply to all elements and so would seem to have the same effect. I understand the principle that in the first instance the style is being applied to one tag, body for the whole page whereas in the second example the font is being applied against each individual html elements. What I am asking is what is the practical difference in doing that, what are the implications and what is a reason, situation or best practice that leads to using one over another. One side-effect is certainly speed (+1 Rob). I am most interested in the actual reason to choose one over the other in terms of functionality.

• How do I make Ubuntu go past the splash screen?

  I recently upgraded my desktop mac to Precise and now can't get past the Ubuntu 12.04 splash page. The splash freezes with ubntu and the dots turning from white to orange forever. This is when I choose 3.2.0-generic from the grub menu. If I choose to load up older kernels, I still get the same thing. How can I make my computer finish booting again? I'm able to ssh into the machine and poke around, but the actual screen freezes at the splash. dmesg cat kern.log

• How can I make Banshee re-encode FLAC to Ogg Vorbis when copying to my player?

  I have most of my music in FLAC on my large storage device, and would like to automatically re-encode it in Ogg Vorbis when copying it to my portable audio player (Sansa Fuze v2). I have set my Fuze to MTP mode and told Banshee to encode to Ogg Vorbis with quality 4 in the Device Properties dialog for the Fuze (I would use MSC mode, but don't have an encoding option in the device properties when I do that). However, when I copy music to the device, either by dragging it from the music library or by syncing a playlist, the full FLAC files are copied rather than transcoded and written as Oggs. How can I get my Banshee setup re-encoding the audio? If StackExchange supported bonus points, I'd give bonus points for a solution that only re-encoded music that was already losslessly encoded, but I don't think that's possible.

  Error during update A problem occurred during the update. This is usually some sort of network problem, please check your network connection and retry. W:Failed to fetch gzip:/var/lib/apt/lists/partial/us.archive.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_oneiric_universe_i18n_Translation-en Encountered a section with no Package: header , E:Some index files failed to download. They have been ignored, or old ones used instead. I can browse web sites normally during this time though (my network is ok).

  I'm a Rails developer doing TDD on a Mac with RSpec, Capybara and Selenium webdriver. Now I have been asked by my company to use this approach for a .NET on Windows environment. What is the best way of doing this? I could just install Ruby and use RSPEC, Capybara and Selenium webdriver for integration testing. But what about unit tests? I also looked at NSpec, but I'm not sure if I can combine that with Capybara or Selenium for integration tests. What would be a good approach here?

• WCF Routing Service Filter Generator

  Recently I've been working with the WCF routing service and in our case we were simply routing based on the SOAP Action. This is a pretty good approach for a standard redirection of the message when all messages matching a SOAP Action will go to the same endpoint. Using the SOAP Action also lets you be specific about which methods you expose via the router. One of the things which was a pain was the number of routing rules I needed to create because we were routing for a lot of different methods. I could have explored the option of using a regular expression to match the message to its routing but I wanted to be very specific about what's routed and not risk exposing methods I shouldn't via the router. I decided to put together a little spreadsheet so that I can generate part of the configuration I would need to put in the configuration file rather than have to type this by hand. To show how this works download the spreadsheet from the following url: https://s3.amazonaws.com/CSCBlogSamples/WCF+Routing+Generator.xlsx In the spreadsheet you will see that the squares in green are the ones which you need to amend. In the below picture you can see that you specify a prefix and suffix for the filter name. The core namespace from the web service your generating routing rules for and the WCF endpoint name which you want to route to. In column A you will see the green cells where you add the list of method names which you want to include routing rules for. The spreadsheet will workout what the full SOAP Action would be then the name you will use for that filter in your WCF Routing filters. In column D the spreadsheet will have generated the XML snippet which you can add to the routing filters section in your configuration file. In column E the spreadsheet will have created the XML snippet which you can add to the routing table to send messages matching each filter to the appropriate WCF client endpoint to forward the message to the required destination. Hopefully you can see that with this spreadsheet it would be very easy to produce accurate XML for the WCF Routing configuration if you had a large number of routing rules. If you had additional methods in other services you can simply copy the worksheet and add multiple copies to the Excel workbook. One worksheet per service would work well.

• Ubuntu 12.10 wont boot

  im new to using Ubuntu and just bought a HP Pavilion g6-2240sa with windows 8 pre installed. I made a bootable USB with Ubuntu on it and installed alsongside windows, for 2 days it worked fine, I got into Ubuntu by doing an advanced restart from windows 8 and then booting Ubuntu from the partition it made. When i did the advanced restart today there was only 1 HDD i could select ( there were 3 before windows, a restore partition that was already there when i got the computer and Ubuntu) so i booted from the USB again and re-installed Ubuntu. then did an advanced restart and the 3 partitions where there again, i booted from Ubuntu and now heres my problem. I get the Ubuntu background when its loading then its just a black screen with some writing, its not on long enough to read, then just a black screen with a white _ and the top left corner that does nothing, i have to restat the computer and it auto boots into windows 8. im a little confused as the first time i installed Ubuntu it worked fine until the partition dissaperd), the second time i installed i did everything the same except it found the old Ubuntu so i reinstalled it and now is donst work.

• htaccess 301 redirect help needed

  Due to some issues in my site many pages are visible as duplicate using : www.example.com/page.html?task=view but it's content is exactly same as www.example.com/page.html. One way is to use http 301 redirect from www.example.com/page.html?task=view to www.example.com/page.html when anybody fetches page with arguments. But links like www.example.com/page.html?task=view will remain visible to outside world. Another way is canonicalization which I don't want to use as it is difficult to insert the tag in Joomla CMS. I want to hide www.example.com/page.html?task=view from external world. Is it possible to change the url from www.example.com/page.html?task=view to www.example.com/page.html ? I mean if there is href link of www.example.com/page.html?task=view in my web page, it should be visible to external world as without any arguments. This is different from using 301 to convert externally accessed page : www.example.com/page.html?task=view to without using arguments in .htaccess.

• Dropbox install stuck at 99%, how do I fix it? (and any dpkg errors)

  I tried to install Dropbox using How to install Dropbox?, or with apt-get install nautilus-dropbox. Dropbox loads until 99% and then hangs, causing the system to go to 100% cpu usage. If I reboot or close the terminal, I sometimes get dpkg errors which prevent me from using apt-get or Software Center to perform any package management functions. I would like to resolve all these and just get Dropbox working. How do I do that? Note: This question is possibly answered in two parts: The accepted answer tells you how to install Dropbox. But if you have dpkg errors, see this answer before you use answer 1 to install Dropbox.

• Should I understand SVN before I jump to GIT?

  I work in a department where no one has ever used source control before, including myself. I am trying to push the concept. I have spent a little while researching SVN. I some basics learned. I can Create/update/checkout/commit with command line and from Tortoise. I am starting to learn how to tag and branch but still confused a lot about conflicts between branches and trunk etc. I am still learning, but I do not have a physical person who can show me anything. Its all from books/tutorials and trial and error. From what I have read online it seems like git is the better thing to know, but its also more complicated. I don't want to overwhelm myself. Should I continue to master svn before moving to git or would I be wiser to just jump to git now? Are there pros and cons to both approaches?

  Its been really nice to see that over the last few weeks since we implemented our Dynamics CRM connecting via Azure Service Bus to backend line of business applications solution how much interest this has sparked within the rest of the organisation and other subsiduaries and how many people are coming up with ideas elsewhere on how they can leverage what we did and how simple it could be to connect their applications to the cloud. • Do I need multiple accounts in Facebook for each of my product site?

  I've a dozen sites which include for-profit ones as well as for charity. For each site I've created a Facebook company/charity account. After creating those accounts it dawned on me that I could as well have created a new page for each of my site from my personal account only even if a site has multiple product pages. What'll be the right strategy? Also as per Facebook terms we can have only single personal account. I do have single personal account only but for each site I've created only company pages. I hope I'm not violating the facebook terms.
