  • Looking for a VNC (and or Remote Desktop) Profile Manager/Launcher

    - by zevlag
I connect to many different computers via VNC and RDP. I'm looking for a windows client that can preferably do the following, though I'd accept software options that only meet some of the points: Save profiles (hostname, username, password, settings, etc.) Connect to VNC Servers Connect to RDP Servers Connect to SSH Servers (or ssh tunneling) Scan network for devices not in saved profiles Free (as in beer) Tools that do similar things, but not on windows: ARD on OSX iSSH on iPad Desktop Connect on iPad

  • Windows 7 Favorite folder doesn't work

    - by Razor Storm
So recently I did a very stupid thing and accidentally deleted my APPDATA (LOL yes), and now the favorite folder doesn't work anymore. The favorite folder I am refering to is the one in windows explorer (not the horrid IE) in windows 7, which appears on the left of windows explorer windows. The %USERPROFILE%/Favorite folder still works correctly, but the favorite folder in the shell doesn't point there, instead it points to a nonexistant and broken location, how do i fix this problem?

  • How do you get autofs and updatedb to work together?

    - by Veek.M
/etc/my.misc sda1 -fstype=ntfs,user,exec :/dev/sda1 sda3 -fstype=ntfs,user,exec :/dev/sda3 sda4 -fstype=ntfs,user,exec :/dev/sda4 /etc/auto.master /my /etc/my.misc --ghost When I run locate .pdf, I get nothing because though the mount points (sda1, sda2, ..) are created in /my - there's nothing in them till I access them. Unfortunately this is not good enough for updatedb and it purges its cache of /my/sdaX files. How do I prevent/solve this problem?

  • A Versatile Physical Server

    - by Paul
How does one judge potential memory and processor needs for linux web servers? Specifically, given: A Debian or Ubuntu OS Running a web server (apache2), and A database (MySQL), and A DNS server (bind), and Being used by up to 100 concurrent users, at some points each downloading high-resolution (0.5 to 1 MB) images via a web app. How much should one budget in terms of RAM, type of processor(s), and number of cores? Thanks!

  • Is it possible to create a self-signed intermediate CA for ssl?

    - by limilaw
I am trying to create my own SSL hierarchy like: MyRootCA --MyIntermediateCA ----MyCert I have installed MyRootCA and MyIntermediateCA, but windows points out that MyIntermediateCA doesn't have the right to issue certs. Therefore it invalidates MyCert. i.stack.imgur.com/XDtXp.png i.stack.imgur.com/rZNQZ.png I am using sign.sh from mod_ssl package, which utilizes openssl ca command. I wonder if there is any parameter/option that grants MyIntermediateCA the right to issue sublevel certs?

  • Exchange 2003 very reliant of 1 on 4 AD servers, Freezes without it

    - by user56717
On-site we have 3 of 4 AD servers (AD1,AD2 and AD4) with AD1 having most of the Operational Master Roles, however when AD2 goes down, freezes or reboots outlook says 'waiting for exchange server AD2', when exchange is on a different box completely. AD4 was just built from scratch and added hoping to get around this reliance on AD2 but it doesn't seem to have any effect, had a look through exchange settings and couldn't find any locations it points to AD2 and no other active directory servers. Would appreciate some help on the matter, Thank You

  • DefaultHttpClient GET and POST commands Java Android

    - by RenegadeAndy
    Ok this is my application : An Android app to allow me to submit CokeZone codes into CokeZone.co.uk from a mobile app instead of from the website. So I wrote this section of code to do the post logon command and then check to see if im logged in after. Problem is - the html I get from the homepage after I send the post command is the default - as if im not logged in - so something is going wrong. Can anyone please help! Its probably the URL im sending the POST to, or the params within the POST command - I havent done much of this stuff so its probably something obvious. Below is my code so far: DefaultHttpClient httpclient = new DefaultHttpClient(); HttpGet httpget = new HttpGet(url); HttpResponse response = httpclient.execute(httpget); HttpEntity entity = response.getEntity(); thisResponse = printPage(entity.getContent()); Log.e("debug",thisResponse); System.out.println("Login form get: " + response.getStatusLine()); if (entity != null) { entity.consumeContent(); } System.out.println("Initial set of cookies:"); List<Cookie> cookies = httpclient.getCookieStore().getCookies(); if (cookies.isEmpty()) { System.out.println("None"); } else { for (int i = 0; i < cookies.size(); i++) { System.out.println("- " + cookies.get(i).toString()); } } HttpPost httpost = new HttpPost("https://secure.cokezone.co.uk/home/blank.jsp?_DARGS=/home/login/login.jsp"); List <NameValuePair> nvps = new ArrayList <NameValuePair>(); nvps.add(new BasicNameValuePair("_dyncharset", "ISO-8859-1")); nvps.add(new BasicNameValuePair("/grlp/login/LoginHandler.loginFormBean.name","renegadeandy%40gmail.com")); nvps.add(new BasicNameValuePair("_D:/grlp/login/LoginHandler.loginFormBean.name", "+")); nvps.add(new BasicNameValuePair("/grlp/login/LoginHandler.cookiedUser", "false")); nvps.add(new BasicNameValuePair("_D:/grlp/login/LoginHandler.cookiedUser", "+")); nvps.add(new BasicNameValuePair("/grlp/login/LoginHandler.loginFormBean.password", "passwordval")); nvps.add(new BasicNameValuePair("_D:/grlp/login/LoginHandler.loginFormBean.password", "+")); nvps.add(new BasicNameValuePair("/grlp/login/LoginHandler.rememberMe", "yes")); nvps.add(new BasicNameValuePair("_D:/grlp/login/LoginHandler.rememberMe", "false")); nvps.add(new BasicNameValuePair("/grlp/login/LoginHandler.aSuccessURL", "http://www.cokezone.co.uk/home/index.jsp")); nvps.add(new BasicNameValuePair("_D:/grlp/login/LoginHandler.aSuccessURL", "+")); nvps.add(new BasicNameValuePair("/grlp/login/LoginHandler.aErrorURL", "http://www.cokezone.co.uk/home/index.jsphttps://secure.cokezone.co.uk/home/index.jsp")); nvps.add(new BasicNameValuePair("/grlp/login/LoginHandler.aErrorURL", "+")); nvps.add(new BasicNameValuePair("/grlp/login/LoginHandler.explicitLogin", "true")); nvps.add(new BasicNameValuePair("_D:/grlp/login/LoginHandler.explicitLogin", "+")); nvps.add(new BasicNameValuePair("/grlp/login/LoginHandler.fICLogin", "login")); nvps.add(new BasicNameValuePair("_D:/grlp/login/LoginHandler.fICLogin", "+")); nvps.add(new BasicNameValuePair("/grlp/login/LoginHandler.fICLogin", "LOGIN")); nvps.add(new BasicNameValuePair("_D:/grlp/login/LoginHandler.fICLogin", "+")); nvps.add(new BasicNameValuePair("_DARGS", "/home/login/login.jsp")); httpost.setEntity(new UrlEncodedFormEntity(nvps, HTTP.UTF_8)); response = httpclient.execute(httpost); entity = response.getEntity(); System.out.println("Login form get: " + response.getStatusLine()); if (entity != null) { thisResponse = printPage(entity.getContent()); entity.consumeContent(); } Log.e("debug",thisResponse); Log.e("debug","done"); httpget = new HttpGet("http://www.cokezone.co.uk/home/index.jsp"); response = httpclient.execute(httpget); entity = response.getEntity(); TextView points = (TextView)findViewById(R.id.points); points.setText(getPoints(entity.getContent()).toString()); debug.setText(thisResponse); System.out.println("Post logon cookies:"); cookies = httpclient.getCookieStore().getCookies(); if (cookies.isEmpty()) { System.out.println("None"); } else { for (int i = 0; i < cookies.size(); i++) { System.out.println("- " + cookies.get(i).toString()); } }

  • Choosing a scripting language for game and implementing it

    - by Radius
Hello, I am currently developing a 3D Action/RPG game in C++, and I would like some advice in choosing a scripting language to program the AI of the game. My team comes from a modding background, and in fact we are still finishing work on a mod of the game Gothic. In that game (which we also got our inspiration from) the language DAEDALUS (created by Piranha Bytes, the makers of the game) is used. Here is a full description of said language. The main thing to notice about this is that it uses instances moreso than classes. The game engine is closed, and so one can only guess about the internal implementation of this language, but the main thing I am looking for in a scripting language (which ideally would be quite similar but preferably also more powerful than DAEDALUS) is the fact that there are de facto 3 'separations' of classes - ie classes, instances and (instances of instances?). I think it will be easier to understand what I want if I provide an example. Take a regular NPC. First of all you have a class defined which (I understand) mirrors the (class or structure) inside the engine: CLASS C_NPC { VAR INT id ; // absolute ID des NPCs VAR STRING name [5] ; // Namen des NPC VAR STRING slot ; VAR INT npcType ; VAR INT flags ; VAR INT attribute [ATR_INDEX_MAX] ; VAR INT protection [PROT_INDEX_MAX]; VAR INT damage [DAM_INDEX_MAX] ; VAR INT damagetype ; VAR INT guild, level ; VAR FUNC mission [MAX_MISSIONS] ; var INT fight_tactic ; VAR INT weapon ; VAR INT voice ; VAR INT voicePitch ; VAR INT bodymass ; VAR FUNC daily_routine ; // Tagesablauf VAR FUNC start_aistate ; // Zustandsgesteuert // ********************** // Spawn // ********************** VAR STRING spawnPoint ; // Beim Tod, wo respawnen ? VAR INT spawnDelay ; // Mit Delay in (Echtzeit)-Sekunden // ********************** // SENSES // ********************** VAR INT senses ; // Sinne VAR INT senses_range ; // Reichweite der Sinne in cm // ********************** // Feel free to use // ********************** VAR INT aivar [50] ; VAR STRING wp ; // ********************** // Experience dependant // ********************** VAR INT exp ; // EXerience Points VAR INT exp_next ; // EXerience Points needed to advance to next level VAR INT lp ; // Learn Points }; Then, you can also define prototypes (which set some default values). But how you actually define an NPC is like this: instance BAU_900_Ricelord (Npc_Default) //Inherit from prototype Npc_Default { //-------- primary data -------- name = "Ryzowy Ksiaze"; npctype = NPCTYPE_GUARD; guild = GIL_BAU; level = 10; voice = 12; id = 900; //-------- abilities -------- attribute[ATR_STRENGTH] = 50; attribute[ATR_DEXTERITY] = 10; attribute[ATR_MANA_MAX] = 0; attribute[ATR_MANA] = 0; attribute[ATR_HITPOINTS_MAX]= 170; attribute[ATR_HITPOINTS] = 170; //-------- visuals -------- // animations Mdl_SetVisual (self,"HUMANS.MDS"); Mdl_ApplyOverlayMds (self,"Humans_Arrogance.mds"); Mdl_ApplyOverlayMds (self,"HUMANS_DZIDA.MDS"); // body mesh ,bdytex, skin, head mesh ,headtex, teethtex, ruestung Mdl_SetVisualBody (self,"Hum_Body_CookSmith",1,1,"Hum_Head_FatBald",91 , 0,-1); B_Scale (self); Mdl_SetModelFatness(self,2); fight_tactic = FAI_HUMAN_STRONG; //-------- Talente -------- Npc_SetTalentSkill (self,NPC_TALENT_1H,1); //-------- inventory -------- CreateInvItems (self, ItFoRice,10); CreateInvItem (self, ItFoWine); CreateInvItems(self, ItMiNugget,40); EquipItem (self, Heerscherstab); EquipItem (self, MOD_AMULETTDESREISLORDS); CreateInvItem (self, ItMi_Alchemy_Moleratlubric_01); //CreateInvItem (self,ItKey_RB_01); EquipItem (self, Ring_des_Lebens); //-------------Daily Routine------------- daily_routine = Rtn_start_900; }; FUNC VOID Rtn_start_900 () { TA_Boss (07,00,20,00,"NC_RICELORD"); TA_SitAround (20,00,24,00,"NC_RICELORD_SIT"); TA_Sleep (24,00,07,00,"NC_RICEBUNKER_10"); }; As you can see, the instance declaration is more like a constructor function, setting values and calling functions from within. This still wouldn't pose THAT much of a problem, if not for one more thing: multiple copies of this instance. For example, you can spawn multiple BAU_900_Ricelord's, and each of them keeps track of its own AI state, hitpoints etc. Now I think the instances are represented as ints (maybe even as the id of the NPC) inside the engine, as whenever (inside the script) you use the expression BAU_900_Ricelord it can be only assigned to an int variable, and most functions that operate on NPCs take that int value. However to directly modify its hitpoints etc you have to do something like var C_NPC npc = GetNPC(Bau_900_Ricelord); npc.attribute[ATR_HITPOINTS] = 10; ie get the actual C_NPC object that represents it. To finally recap - is it possible to get this kind of behaviour in any scripting languages you know of, or am I stuck with having to make my own? Or maybe there is an even better way of representing NPC's and their behaviours that way. The IDEAL language for scripting for me would be C#, as I simply adore that language, but somehow I doubt it is possible or indeed feasible to try and implement a similar kind of behaviour in C#. Many thanks

  • Matplotlib plotting non uniform data in 3D surface

    - by Raj Tendulkar
    I have a simple code to plot the points in 3D for Matplotlib as below - from mpl_toolkits.mplot3d import axes3d import matplotlib.pyplot as plt import numpy as np from numpy import genfromtxt import csv fig = plt.figure() ax = fig.add_subplot(111, projection='3d') my_data = genfromtxt('points1.csv', delimiter=',') points1X = my_data[:,0] points1Y = my_data[:,1] points1Z = my_data[:,2] ## I remove the header of the CSV File. points1X = np.delete(points1X, 0) points1Y = np.delete(points1Y, 0) points1Z = np.delete(points1Z, 0) # Convert the array to 1D array points1X = np.reshape(points1X,points1X.size) points1Y = np.reshape(points1Y,points1Y.size) points1Z = np.reshape(points1Z,points1Z.size) my_data = genfromtxt('points2.csv', delimiter=',') points2X = my_data[:,0] points2Y = my_data[:,1] points2Z = my_data[:,2] ## I remove the header of the CSV File. points2X = np.delete(points2X, 0) points2Y = np.delete(points2Y, 0) points2Z = np.delete(points2Z, 0) # Convert the array to 1D array points2X = np.reshape(points2X,points2X.size) points2Y = np.reshape(points2Y,points2Y.size) points2Z = np.reshape(points2Z,points2Z.size) ax.plot(points1X, points1Y, points1Z, 'd', markersize=8, markerfacecolor='red', label='points1') ax.plot(points2X, points2Y, points2Z, 'd', markersize=8, markerfacecolor='blue', label='points2') plt.show() My problem is that I tried to make a decent surface plot out of these data points that I have. I already tried to use ax.plot_surface() function to make it look nice. For this I eliminated some points, and recalculated the matrix kind of input needed by this function. However, the graph I generated was far more difficult to interpret and understand. So there might be 2 possibilities: either I am not using the function correctly, or otherwise, the data I am trying to plot is not good for the surface plot. What I was expecting was 3D graph which would have an effect similar to that we have of 3D pie chart. We see that one piece (that which is extracted out) is part of another piece. I was not expecting it to be exactly same like that, but some kind of effect like that. What I would like to ask is: Do you think it will be possible to make such 3D graph? Is there any way better, I could express my data in 3 dimension? Here are the 2 files - points1.csv Dim1,Dim2,Dim3 3,8,1 3,8,2 3,8,3 3,8,4 3,8,5 3,9,1 3,9,2 3,9,3 3,9,4 3,9,5 3,10,1 3,10,2 3,10,3 3,10,4 3,10,5 3,11,1 3,11,2 3,11,3 3,11,4 3,11,5 3,12,1 3,12,2 3,13,1 3,13,2 3,14,1 3,14,2 3,15,1 3,15,2 3,16,1 3,16,2 3,17,1 3,17,2 3,18,1 3,18,2 4,8,1 4,8,2 4,8,3 4,8,4 4,8,5 4,9,1 4,9,2 4,9,3 4,9,4 4,9,5 4,10,1 4,10,2 4,10,3 4,10,4 4,10,5 4,11,1 4,11,2 4,11,3 4,11,4 4,11,5 4,12,1 4,13,1 4,14,1 4,15,1 4,16,1 4,17,1 4,18,1 5,8,1 5,8,2 5,8,3 5,8,4 5,8,5 5,9,1 5,9,2 5,9,3 5,9,4 5,9,5 5,10,1 5,10,2 5,10,3 5,10,4 5,10,5 5,11,1 5,11,2 5,11,3 5,11,4 5,11,5 5,12,1 5,13,1 5,14,1 5,15,1 5,16,1 5,17,1 5,18,1 6,8,1 6,8,2 6,8,3 6,8,4 6,8,5 6,9,1 6,9,2 6,9,3 6,9,4 6,9,5 6,10,1 6,11,1 6,12,1 6,13,1 6,14,1 6,15,1 6,16,1 6,17,1 6,18,1 7,8,1 7,8,2 7,8,3 7,8,4 7,8,5 7,9,1 7,9,2 7,9,3 7,9,4 7,9,5 and points2.csv Dim1,Dim2,Dim3 3,12,3 3,12,4 3,12,5 3,13,3 3,13,4 3,13,5 3,14,3 3,14,4 3,14,5 3,15,3 3,15,4 3,15,5 3,16,3 3,16,4 3,16,5 3,17,3 3,17,4 3,17,5 3,18,3 3,18,4 3,18,5 4,12,2 4,12,3 4,12,4 4,12,5 4,13,2 4,13,3 4,13,4 4,13,5 4,14,2 4,14,3 4,14,4 4,14,5 4,15,2 4,15,3 4,15,4 4,15,5 4,16,2 4,16,3 4,16,4 4,16,5 4,17,2 4,17,3 4,17,4 4,17,5 4,18,2 4,18,3 4,18,4 4,18,5 5,12,2 5,12,3 5,12,4 5,12,5 5,13,2 5,13,3 5,13,4 5,13,5 5,14,2 5,14,3 5,14,4 5,14,5 5,15,2 5,15,3 5,15,4 5,15,5 5,16,2 5,16,3 5,16,4 5,16,5 5,17,2 5,17,3 5,17,4 5,17,5 5,18,2 5,18,3 5,18,4 5,18,5 6,10,2 6,10,3 6,10,4 6,10,5 6,11,2 6,11,3 6,11,4 6,11,5 6,12,2 6,12,3 6,12,4 6,12,5 6,13,2 6,13,3 6,13,4 6,13,5 6,14,2 6,14,3 6,14,4 6,14,5 6,15,2 6,15,3 6,15,4 6,15,5 6,16,2 6,16,3 6,16,4 6,16,5 6,17,2 6,17,3 6,17,4 6,17,5 6,18,2 6,18,3 6,18,4 6,18,5 7,10,1 7,10,2 7,10,3 7,10,4 7,10,5 7,11,1 7,11,2 7,11,3 7,11,4 7,11,5 7,12,1 7,12,2 7,12,3 7,12,4 7,12,5 7,13,1 7,13,2 7,13,3 7,13,4 7,13,5 7,14,1 7,14,2 7,14,3 7,14,4 7,14,5 7,15,1 7,15,2 7,15,3 7,15,4 7,15,5 7,16,1 7,16,2 7,16,3 7,16,4 7,16,5 7,17,1 7,17,2 7,17,3 7,17,4 7,17,5 7,18,1 7,18,2 7,18,3 7,18,4 7,18,5

  • SQL Server 2005 database design - many-to-many relationships with hierarchy

    - by Remnant
Note I have completely re-written my original post to better explain the issue I am trying to understand. I have tried to generalise the problem as much as possible. Also, my thanks to the original people who responded. Hopefully this post makes things a little clearer. Context In short, I am struggling to understand the best way to design a small scale database to handle (what I perceive to be) multiple many-to-many relationships. Imagine the following scenario for a company organisational structure: Textile Division Marketing Division | | ---------------------- ---------------------- | | | | HR Dept Finance Dept HR Dept Finance Dept | | | | ---------- ---------- ---------- --------- | | | | | | | | Payroll Hiring Audit Tax Payroll Hiring Audit Accounts | | | | | | | | Emps Emps Emps Emps Emps Emps Emps Emps NB: Emps denotes a list of employess that work in that area When I first started with this issue I made four separate tables: Divisions - Textile, Marketing (PK = DivisionID) Departments - HR, Finance (PK = DeptID) Functions - Payroll, Hiring, Audit, Tax, Accounts (PK = FunctionID) Employees - List of all Employees (PK = EmployeeID) The problem as I see it is that there are multiple many-to-many relationships i.e. many departments have many divisions and many functions have many departments. Question Giving the database structure above, suppose I wanted to do the following: Get all employees who work in the Payroll function of the Marketing Division To do this I need to be able to differentiate between the two Payroll departments but I am not sure how this can be done? I understand that I could build a 'Link / Junction' table between Departments and Functions so that I can retrieve which Functions are in which Departments. However, I would still need to differentiate the Division they belong to. Research Effort As you can see I am an abecedarian when it comes to database deisgn. I have spent the last two days resaerching this issue, traversing nested set models, adjacency models, reading that this issue is known not to be NP complete etc. I am sure there is a simple solution?

  • JBoss Developer Studio exploaded SAR/EAR/WAR deployment

    - by dr_hoppa
I am new to JBoss DS and I could not figur out is how to make a folder from my project deployable, exploded SAR in my case. If I create a new server in the JBoss server view / JBoss AS perspective and select a SAR and make it a deployable then the SAR file can be deployed on the JBoss server. Another approch that I have tryed is to make the *-service.xml file as a deployable element, same procedure as with the SAR file, and to add the Eclipse project as a dependency to the classpath of the server 'Open launch configuration' / 'Classpath' after dooing this I got an error from JBoss telling me that the JBoss classes are not found. The compromise solution that I have found is to create a junction/symlink from the output of the Eclipse project 'bin' into the JBoss 'serve//deploy/xxx.sar' this is a temporary solution but will not scale in the future as multiple services must be created. What I would need: I would need to have the ability to make the exploded folder as 'mark deployable' and to be have the classes/*service.xml files loaded from there and to have hot-deployability for them. Any sugestions would help.

  • How to store a list in a column of a database table.

    - by John Berryman
Howdy! So, per Mehrdad's answer to a related question, I get it that a "proper" database table column doesn't store a list. Rather, you should create another table that effectively holds the elements of said list and then link to it directly or through a junction table. However, the type of list I want to create will be composed of unique items (unlike the linked question's fruit example). Furthermore, the items in my list are explicitly sorted - which means that if I stored the elements in another table, I'd have to sort them every time I accessed them. Finally, the list is basically atomic in that any time I wish to access the list, I will want to access the entire list rather than just a piece of it - so it seems silly to have to issue a database query to gather together pieces of the list. AKX's solution (linked above) is to serialize the list and store it in a binary column. But this also seems inconvenient because it means that I have to worry about serialization and deserialization. Is there any better solution? If there is no better solution, then why? It seems that this problem should come up from time to time. ... just a little more info to let you know where I'm coming from. As soon as I had just begun understanding SQL and databases in general, I was turned on to LINQ to SQL, and so now I'm a little spoiled because I expect to deal with my programming object model without having to think about how the objects are queried or stored in the database. Thanks All! John

  • Finding the right terminology for a dictionary table

    - by Karl Forner
My concern is about what I currently call "dictionary tables", that are database tables containing a list of controlled vocabulary. Let's use an example: Suppose you have a table User containing fields: user_id : primary key first_name last_name user_type_id : foreign key to the UserType table and another table UserType with just two fields: user_type_id : primary key name : the name/value of a particular type of user. For instance, the UserType table may contain (1, Administrator), (2, PowerUser), (3, Normal)... My question is: what is the canonical term for a table like UserType, that only contains a list of (dictinct) words. I want to publish some code that help managing this kind of tables, but first I have to name them ! Thanks for your help. Current state of thought: For now I feel Lookup Tables is a good term. It is also used with the same meaning in these posts: http://dbix-class.35028.n2.nabble.com/RFC-Component-for-Lookup-tables-td3504085.html http://tonyandrews.blogspot.de/2004/10/otlt-and-eav-two-big-design-mistakes.html Lookup Tables Best Practices: DB Tables... or Enumerations The only problem is that lookup table is also sometimes used to name a junction table.

I am wondering what the best way (for a lone developer) is to develop a project that depends on code of other projects deploy the resulting project to the server I am planning to put my code in svn, and have shared code as a separate project. There are problems with svn:externals which I cannot fully estimate. I've read subversion:externals considered to be an anti-pattern, and How do you organize your version control repository, but there is one special thing with php-projects (and other interpreted source code): there is no final executable resulting from your libraries. External dependencies are thus always on raw source code. Ideally I really want to be able to develop simultaneously on one project and the projects it dependends on. Possible way: Check out a projects' dependency in a sub folder as a working copy of the trunk. Problems I foresee: When you want to deploy a project, you might want to freeze its dependencies, right? The dependency code should not end up as a duplicate in the projects repository, I think. *(update1: I additionally assume svn:ignore will pose problems if I cannot fall back on symlinks, see my comment) I am still looking for suggestions that do not require the use junction points. They are a sort of unsupported hack in winxp, which may break some programs* This leads me to the last part of the question (as one has influence on the other): how do you deploy apps whith such dependencies? I've looked into BuildOut for Python, but it seems to be tightly related to the python ecosystem (resolving and fetching python modules from the web etc). I am very eager to learn about your best practices.

  • Deploy ASP.NET Web Applications with Web Deployment Projects

    - by Ben Griswold
One may quickly build and deploy an ASP.NET web application via the Publish option in Visual Studio.  This option works great for most simple deployment scenarios but it won’t always cut it.  Let’s say you need to automate your deployments. Or you have environment-specific configuration settings. Or you need to execute pre/post build operations when you do your builds.  If so, you should consider using Web Deployment Projects. The Web Deployment Project type doesn’t come out-of-the-box with Visual Studio 2008.  You’ll need to Download Visual Studio® 2008 Web Deployment Projects – RTW and install if you want to follow along with this tutorial. I’ve created a shiny new ASP.NET MVC project.  Web Deployment Projects work with websites, web applications and MVC projects so feel free to go with any web project type you’d like.  Once your web application is in place, it’s time to add the Web Deployment project.  You can hunt and peck around the File > New > New Project… dialogue as long as you’d like, but you aren’t going to find what you need.  Instead, select the web project and then choose the “Add Web Deployment Project…” hiding behind the Build menu option. I prefer to name my projects based on the environment in which I plan to deploy.  In this case, I’ll be rolling to the QA machine. Don’t expect too much to happen at this point.  A seemingly empty project with a funny icon will be added to your solution.  That’s it. I want to take a minute and talk about configuration settings before we continue.  Some of the common settings which might change from environment to environment are appSettings, connectionStrings and mailSettings.  Here’s a look at my updated web.config: <appSettings>   <add key="MvcApplication293.Url" value="http://localhost:50596/" />     </appSettings> <connectionStrings>   <add name="ApplicationServices"        connectionString="data source=.\SQLEXPRESS;Integrated Security=SSPI;AttachDBFilename=|DataDirectory|aspnetdb.mdf;User Instance=true"        providerName="System.Data.SqlClient"/> </connectionStrings>   <system.net>   <mailSettings>     <smtp from="[email protected]">         <network host="server.com" userName="username" password="password" port="587" defaultCredentials="false"/>     </smtp>   </mailSettings> </system.net> I want to update these values prior to deploying to the QA environment.  There are variations to this approach, but I like to maintain environment-specific settings for each of the web.config sections in the Config/[Environment] project folders.  I’ve provided a screenshot of the QA environment settings below. It may be obvious what one should include in each of the three files.  Basically, it is a copy of the associated web.config section with updated setting values.  For example, the AppSettings.config file may include a reference to the QA web url, the DB.config would include the QA database server and login information and the StmpSettings.config would include a QA Stmp server and user information. <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8" ?> <appSettings>   <add key="MvcApplication293.Url" value="http://qa.MvcApplicatinon293.com/" /> </appSettings> AppSettings.config  <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8" ?> <connectionStrings>   <add name="ApplicationServices"        connectionString="server=QAServer;integrated security=SSPI;database=MvcApplication293"        providerName="System.Data.SqlClient"/>   </connectionStrings> Db.config  <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8" ?> <smtp from="[email protected]">     <network host="qaserver.com" userName="qausername" password="qapassword" port="587" defaultCredentials="false"/> </smtp> SmtpSettings.config  I think our web project is ready to deploy.  Now, it’s time to concentrate on the Web Deployment Project itself.  Right-click on the project file and open the Property Pages. The first thing to call out is the Configuration dropdown.  I only deploy a project which is built in Release Mode so I only setup the Web Deployment Project for this mode.  (This is when you change the Configuration selection to “Release.”)  I typically keep the Output Folder default value – .\Release\.  When the application is built, all artifacts will be dropped in the .\Release\ folder relative to the Web Deployment Project root.  The final option may be up for some debate.  I like to roll out updatable websites so I select the “Allow this precompiled site to be updatable” option.  I really do like to follow standard SDLC processes when I release my software but there are those times when you just have to make a hotfix to production and I like to keep this option open if need be.  If you are strongly opposed to this idea, please, by all means, don’t check the box. The next tab is boring.  I don’t like to deploy a crazy number of DLLs so I merge all outputs to a single assembly.  Again, you may have another option and feel free to change this selection if you so wish. If you follow my lead, take care when choosing a single assembly name.  The Assembly Name can not be the same as the website or any other project in your solution otherwise you’ll receive a circular reference build error.  In other words, I can’t name the assembly MvcApplication293 or my output window would start yelling at me. Remember when we called out our QA configuration files?  Click on the Deployment tab and you’ll see how where going to use them.  Notice the Web.config file section replacements value.  All this does is swap called out web.config sections with the content of the Config\QA\* files.  You can reduce or extend this list as you deem fit.  Did you see the “Use external configuration source file” option?  You know how you can point any of your web.config sections to an external file via the configSource attribute?  This option allows you to leverage that technique and instead of replacing the content of the sections, you will replace the configSource attribute value instead. <appSettings configSource="Config\QA\AppSettings.config" /> Go ahead and Apply your changes.  I’d like to take a look at the project file we just updated.  Right-click on the Web Deployment Project and select “Open Project File.” One of the first configuration blocks reflects core Release build settings.  There are a couple of points I’d like to call out here: DebugSymbols=false ensures the compilation debug attribute in your web.config is flipped to false as part of build process.  There’s some crumby (more likely old) documentation which implies you need a ToggleDebugCompilation task to make this happen.  Nope. Just make sure the DebugSymbols is set to false.  EnableUpdateable implies a single dll for the web application rather than a dll for each object and and empty view file. I think updatable applications are cleaner and include the benefit (or risk based on your perspective) that portions of the application can be updated directly on the server.  I called this out earlier but I wanted to reiterate. <PropertyGroup Condition=" '$(Configuration)|$(Platform)' == 'Release|AnyCPU' ">     <DebugSymbols>false</DebugSymbols>     <OutputPath>.\Release</OutputPath>     <EnableUpdateable>true</EnableUpdateable>     <UseMerge>true</UseMerge>     <SingleAssemblyName>MvcApplication293</SingleAssemblyName>     <DeleteAppCodeCompiledFiles>true</DeleteAppCodeCompiledFiles>     <UseWebConfigReplacement>true</UseWebConfigReplacement>     <ValidateWebConfigReplacement>true</ValidateWebConfigReplacement>     <DeleteAppDataFolder>true</DeleteAppDataFolder>   </PropertyGroup> The next section is self-explanatory.  The content merely reflects the replacement value you provided via the Property Pages. <ItemGroup Condition="'$(Configuration)|$(Platform)' == 'Release|AnyCPU'">     <WebConfigReplacementFiles Include="Config\QA\AppSettings.config">       <Section>appSettings</Section>     </WebConfigReplacementFiles>     <WebConfigReplacementFiles Include="Config\QA\Db.config">       <Section>connectionStrings</Section>     </WebConfigReplacementFiles>     <WebConfigReplacementFiles Include="Config\QA\SmtpSettings.config">       <Section>system.net/mailSettings/smtp</Section>     </WebConfigReplacementFiles>   </ItemGroup> You’ll want to extend the ItemGroup section to include the files you wish to exclude from the build.  The sample ExcludeFromBuild nodes exclude all obj, svn, csproj, user, pdb artifacts from the build. Enough though they files aren’t included in your web project, you’ll need to exclude them or they’ll show up along with required deployment artifacts.  <ItemGroup Condition="'$(Configuration)|$(Platform)' == 'Release|AnyCPU'">     <WebConfigReplacementFiles Include="Config\QA\AppSettings.config">       <Section>appSettings</Section>     </WebConfigReplacementFiles>     <WebConfigReplacementFiles Include="Config\QA\Db.config">       <Section>connectionStrings</Section>     </WebConfigReplacementFiles>     <WebConfigReplacementFiles Include="Config\QA\SmtpSettings.config">       <Section>system.net/mailSettings/smtp</Section>     </WebConfigReplacementFiles>     <ExcludeFromBuild Include="$(SourceWebPhysicalPath)\obj\**\*.*" />     <ExcludeFromBuild Include="$(SourceWebPhysicalPath)\**\.svn\**\*.*" />     <ExcludeFromBuild Include="$(SourceWebPhysicalPath)\**\.svn\**\*" />     <ExcludeFromBuild Include="$(SourceWebPhysicalPath)\**\*.csproj" />     <ExcludeFromBuild Include="$(SourceWebPhysicalPath)\**\*.user" />     <ExcludeFromBuild Include="$(SourceWebPhysicalPath)\bin\*.pdb" />     <ExcludeFromBuild Include="$(SourceWebPhysicalPath)\Notes.txt" />   </ItemGroup> Pre/post build and Pre/post merge tasks are added to the final code block.  By default, your project file should look like the following – a completely commented out section. <!– To modify your build process, add your task inside one of        the targets below and uncomment it. Other similar extension        points exist, see Microsoft.WebDeployment.targets.   <Target Name="BeforeBuild">   </Target>   <Target Name="BeforeMerge">   </Target>   <Target Name="AfterMerge">   </Target>   <Target Name="AfterBuild">   </Target>   –> Update the section to remove all temporary Config folders and files after the build.  <!– To modify your build process, add your task inside one of        the targets below and uncomment it. Other similar extension        points exist, see Microsoft.WebDeployment.targets.     <Target Name="BeforeMerge">   </Target>   <Target Name="AfterMerge">   </Target>     <Target Name="BeforeBuild">      </Target>       –>   <Target Name="AfterBuild">     <!– WebConfigReplacement requires the Config files. Remove after build. –>     <RemoveDir Directories="$(OutputPath)\Config" />   </Target> That’s it for setup.  Save the project file, flip the solution to Release Mode and build.  If there’s an issue, consult the Output window for details.  If all went well, you will find your deployment artifacts in your Web Deployment Project folder like so. Both the code source and published application will be there. Inside the Release folder you will find your “published files” and you’ll notice the Config folder is no where to be found.  In the Source folder, all project files are found with the exception of the items which were excluded from the build. I’ll wrap up this tutorial by calling out a little Web Deployment pet peeve of mine: there doesn’t appear to be a way to add an existing web deployment project to a solution.  The best I can come up with is create a new web deployment project and then copy and paste the contents of the existing project file into the new project file.  It’s not a big deal but it bugs me. • Two python distributions, sudo picking the wrong one

    - by DHK
I'm back to Linux after an over 10 year abstinence (fool me thinks). And a little rusty in the sys admin department. I'm faced with an issue with my python distribution. I'm using Python 2.7, but based on the Anaconda flavour. I followed the standard guidance but recently I discovered an issue that I'm not sure how to fix. Under sudo, the standard Python as comes with Ubuntu is provided. Under my user account python points to the Anaconda version: dhk@localhost:~/home/$which python /opt/anaconda/bin/python dhk@localhost:~/home/$sudo which python /usr/bin/python This is an issue as using sudo pip [anything] usually acts on the wrong directory, yet I cannot use it without sudo.

  • Using Microsoft Office 2007 with E-Business Suite Release 12

    - by Steven Chan
Many products in the Oracle E-Business Suite offer optional integrations with Microsoft Office and Microsoft Projects.  For example, some EBS products can export tabular reports to Microsoft Excel.  Some EBS products integrate directly with Microsoft products, and others work through the Applications Desktop Integrator (WebADI and ADI) as an intermediary. These EBS integrations have historically been documented in their respective product-specific documentation.  In other words, if an EBS product in the Oracle Financials family supported an integration with, say, Microsoft Excel, it was up to the product team to document that in the Oracle Financials documentation. Some EBS systems administrators have found the process of hunting through the various product-specific documents for Office-related information to be a bit difficult.  In response to your Service Requests and emails, we've released a new document that consolidates and summarises all patching and configuration requirements for EBS products with MS Office integration points in a single place:Using Microsoft Office 2007 with Oracle E-Business Suite 11i and R12 (Note 1072807.1)

Just a day ago, I was asked how do you plan SQL Server Storage Capacity. Here is the excellent article published by Microsoft regarding SQL Server capacity planning for SharePoint 2010. This article touches all the vital areas of this subject. Here are the bullet points for the same. Gather storage and SQL Server space and I/O requirements Choose SQL Server version and edition Design storage architecture based on capacity and IO requirements Determine memory requirements Understand network topology requirements Configure SQL Server Validate storage performance and reliability Read the original article published by Microsoft here: Storage and SQL Server Capacity Planning and configuration – SharePoint Server 2010. The question to all the SharePoint developers and administrator that if they use the whitepapers and articles to decide the capacity or they just start with application and as they progress they plan the storage? Please let me know your opinion. • 8 Backup Tools Explained for Windows 7 and 8

    - by Chris Hoffman
Backups on Windows can be confusing. Whether you’re using Windows 7 or 8, you have quite a few integrated backup tools to think about. Windows 8 made quite a few changes, too. You can also use third-party backup software, whether you want to back up to an external drive or back up your files to online storage. We won’t cover third-party tools here — just the ones built into Windows. Backup and Restore on Windows 7 Windows 7 has its own Backup and Restore feature that lets you create backups manually or on a schedule. You’ll find it under Backup and Restore in the Control Panel. The original version of Windows 8 still contained this tool, and named it Windows 7 File Recovery. This allowed former Windows 7 users to restore files from those old Windows 7 backups or keep using the familiar backup tool for a little while. Windows 7 File Recovery was removed in Windows 8.1. System Restore System Restore on both Windows 7 and 8 functions as a sort of automatic system backup feature. It creates backup copies of important system and program files on a schedule or when you perform certain tasks, such as installing a hardware driver. If system files become corrupted or your computer’s software becomes unstable, you can use System Restore to restore your system and program files from a System Restore point. This isn’t a way to back up your personal files. It’s more of a troubleshooting feature that uses backups to restore your system to its previous working state. Previous Versions on Windows 7 Windows 7′s Previous Versions feature allows you to restore older versions of files — or deleted files. These files can come from backups created with Windows 7′s Backup and Restore feature, but they can also come from System Restore points. When Windows 7 creates a System Restore point, it will sometimes contain your personal files. Previous Versions allows you to extract these personal files from restore points. This only applies to Windows 7. On Windows 8, System Restore won’t create backup copies of your personal files. The Previous Versions feature was removed on Windows 8. File History Windows 8 replaced Windows 7′s backup tools with File History, although this feature isn’t enabled by default. File History is designed to be a simple, easy way to create backups of your data files on an external drive or network location. File History replaces both Windows 7′s Backup and Previous Versions features. Windows System Restore won’t create copies of personal files on Windows 8. This means you can’t actually recover older versions of files until you enable File History yourself — it isn’t enabled by default. System Image Backups Windows also allows you to create system image backups. These are backup images of your entire operating system, including your system files, installed programs, and personal files. This feature was included in both Windows 7 and Windows 8, but it was hidden in the preview versions of Windows 8.1. After many user complaints, it was restored and is still available in the final version of Windows 8.1 — click System Image Backup on the File History Control Panel. Storage Space Mirroring Windows 8′s Storage Spaces feature allows you to set up RAID-like features in software. For example, you can use Storage Space to set up two hard disks of the same size in a mirroring configuration. They’ll appear as a single drive in Windows. When you write to this virtual drive, the files will be saved to both physical drives. If one drive fails, your files will still be available on the other drive. This isn’t a good long-term backup solution, but it is a way of ensuring you won’t lose important files if a single drive fails. Microsoft Account Settings Backup Windows 8 and 8.1 allow you to back up a variety of system settings — including personalization, desktop, and input settings. If you’re signing in with a Microsoft account, OneDrive settings backup is enabled automatically. This feature can be controlled under OneDrive > Sync settings in the PC settings app. This feature only backs up a few settings. It’s really more of a way to sync settings between devices. OneDrive Cloud Storage Microsoft hasn’t been talking much about File History since Windows 8 was released. That’s because they want people to use OneDrive instead. OneDrive — formerly known as SkyDrive — was added to the Windows desktop in Windows 8.1. Save your files here and they’ll be stored online tied to your Microsoft account. You can then sign in on any other computer, smartphone, tablet, or even via the web and access your files. Microsoft wants typical PC users “backing up” their files with OneDrive so they’ll be available on any device. You don’t have to worry about all these features. Just choose a backup strategy to ensure your files are safe if your computer’s hard disk fails you. Whether it’s an integrated backup tool or a third-party backup application, be sure to back up your files.
