• Make laptop boot to external monitor

  Hi all. Heres my setup: Dell 1737 2x Dell U2311H The laptop lid is always closed and is wall mounted behind the monitors. Every time i boot the laptop, i have to open the lid a little until it goes to the win 7 logon screen. Once there, i close the lid and both monitors get detected and the laptop screen switches off. As the laptop is wall mounted how ever, its really tedious to keep opening and closing the lid. Is there any way i can make it default to the external monitors permanently? Any suggestions are welcome, even hardware mods. Im willing to rip apart the laptop to install a switch or something if needs be lol

  I have CentOS installed on my laptop. I hooked up my TV via VGA and it works, just not as I'd like it to. The left side (on the tv) is cut off, like the image is justified too far left. I want it to be centered, but I also want to use a different resolution. You see, I use a netbook, and thus my laptop screen is tiny, meaning some things cant fit in the same window without scrolling. I want my TV to fix that for me.

• SSH reverse tunnel to monitor and manage remote devices

  I have a set a distributed set of devices running Ubuntu 12.04 that I am distributing to clients. I would like to manage them remotely. They may not have fixed IPs and potentially might be behind firewalls. What I am planning to do is have the devices (permanently connected to the net) poll a request URL and based on the response open a reverse tunnel to my server, so that I can access them via that tunnel. Most of what I read about reverse tunnel over SSH is for single use cases and very little about heavy production usage. Is there some reason for this, security issues? or stability? Any help would be much obliged.

• IIS7 doesn't monitor changes across symlinks

  I've used the mklink utility to create a symlink to a directory of web content. IIS7 doesn't "see" changes any classic ASP files in this linked directory without issuing an iisreset. I've disabled caching and file changes are picked up on other static files (such as .html) but .asp files are ignored.

  In my haproxy configs I'm setting a stick-table of size 5 that stores every incoming IP address (for 1 minute), and it is set as nopurge so new entries won't get stored in the table. What I'd like to have happen is that they would get denied, but that isn't happening. What I'd like to do is deny the request if the stick-table is full. Is this possible? I'm using haproxy 1.5.

• How can I monitor network traffic?

  I have a home network with about 10 devices including BluRay player [netflix] and both windows and linux machines. I need to collect network traffic statistics so that if questions come up about how much traffic I'm using I have the answer independent of my ISP. I've looked at DD-WRT, but I see that even buying a new router that will be supported is a problem since I might get the wrong version of the hardware. I have a DIR-655 and a DIR-501 - neither of which is supported. I don't mind buying new hardware, but it looks like a crap-shoot to get one that will work. DD-WRT looks like a bad solution unless someone knows of a place to get a router that is guaranteed to work. Does someone know of an arduino or other SBC solution? I have plenty of NAT routers already, so I just need traffic statistics for external traffic. The network is GBit Ethernet inside and Cable / soon to be DSL outside. The DIR-655 only gives me "packets", not bytes transferred oddly enough. Thanks, ww

• Devices menu - project to second screen with only one monitor

  So I made a huge blunder. In the devices menu on Windows 8, I selected to project to a second screen only on accident. I had two monitors connected but only the primary one was actually displaying anything. So I projected it and now I can't access anything. The primary screen will show the windows icon when it loads, but then it disappears and I can't login or anything. Surely there's a way to get it back on the primary screen? Thanks a bunch. I'm really lost..

  I'm writing some scripts to make remote connections to a Windows 2003 server a bit more user-friendly, and in doing this I want to see who's logged in already. In Windows, I could use qwinsta.exe to do this, even for remote servers. So it is exposed somehow, but I couldn't find a matching command line tool for Unix. Lacking such a tool, I could install an ssh server on the machine and call it remotely, parsing the output or write a small service of my own that would expose this via http, if I don't want full-blown ssh access. Do I have to do this, or is there already a tool for querying terminal services remotely?

• Monitor sometimes display weird colors and lines when opening a website that contains a video

  This happens 1/50 times when I open a website that contains a video. I don't know if it happens when I open a flash video, but I am sure it has happened when I've opened a HTML5 video. When it happens I have about 2-3 seconds to press Alt + F4 (to close my browser). If I do it in time the screen will get back to normal. If I wait too long to press Alt + F4, maybe 3+ seconds, my screen won't get back to normal when I press Alt + F4. However, when I get stuck in the weird screen I can do all types of things on the computer. the whole computer does not freeze, because if I for example press Win + L I will hear the Windows logout sound.   This is a question to enhance the feature on Windows 7, where you drag the screen to one side and it docks to that side of the screen. Is there a way to have it so when I load a program, it knows that I always like it docked on the right side, so it just loads on the right side? And I don't have to drag it to the right. It will be done for Internet Explorer, so, if there is no setting on the Shortcut for this, can it be programmed into the browser?

I've tried this config, and many other ways of demonizing the rescue task (because running rake resque:work leaves the terminal tied to that command). Unfortunately, their example configuration doesn't work for me. Does the configuration look correct? Or is there another way to turn the process into a daemon?   What is the simplest way on "local" (1*) Windows, for known ports, to: Find out if it is used. Find out as much as possible about what is behind the port. Find out as much as possible about traffic through the port. Find out if something else is interfering with the port and traffic to it. I have used Fiddler in the past, but I think that's mostly HTTP? I don't if Wire-shark does more? I think there is a tool closely integrated with Windows? Which one? (5). I am looking at NMap, but its seems to be more a suite of tools, and a high entry level. 1*: Primarily this is for what happens inside my Windows Machine, but if necessary, I can for example use a VM, or the wireless connection.

  Im in the unfortunate position of having to give someone who I do not fully trust privileged access to a webserver to finish work that they never completed. They will access the server remotely (ie I will not be able to see their screen). What can be done to a) proactively limit any potential damage and b) accurately log anything they do on the server for analysis afterwards, even if things seem ok? I am having a few of the virtual machines running on a virtualization server.Where I am debugging a problem.Port 53 is the one in problem. I have a bridged setup where out of 4 LAN cards on the machine in question one is active and it is xen-br0 I want to check if there is any request coming on port 53 on the server by other machines on LAN in question. I also want to see if the guest operating systems on LAN or any other machine is sending traffic at port 53.Due to abundant messages being generated via tcpdump I am finding it difficult to grep the output at desired port.   As of a few days ago, my computer is behaving 'erratically'. When I am typing, my pointer will randomly move to another place in the text and start typing a semi-random string of characters. ("gvyfn" is common; It has typed this about 8 times whilst I composed all the text above) It often highlights part of or all the text and overwrites it. It sometimes goes into loops of pressing Control-alt-delete down, bringing up Windows 7 menu thing. It sometimes even messes with mouseclicks; they have unexpected results, like requesting admin priveledges from applications, instead of switching to their window. I believe this is because it is holding a alt-function key down. This behaviour happens periodically, in waves. It might subside for an hour, then continue to haunt me. I believe it to be a virus or malicious program. My anti-virus (Symantec) and multiply MS rootkit removers could not find anything suspicious. I've noticed that sometimes it re-maps keys, and types gibberish when I press certain keys (though no pattern is evident). I believe a malicious program has installed a keyhook on my computer. I'm wondering... - Is there a way to let me view which programs are emulating keystrokes? - Is there a way to view what keyboard hooks are installed? (I'm also at liberty to try any other techniques to remove this blasted thing. It is easily the most fustrating computer problem I've encountered). Thanks!

• Toshiba Satellite U500 - Totally Damaged LCD

  I accidentally damaged my Toshiba Satellite U500 laptop which resulted in a totally unusable LCD. The LCD panel has some cracks on it, and I can only see black & white spots; the laptop frame became broken/bent to where I can partially see inside the PC; the accident disassembled the CD tray, and bent the keyboard frame (which now has a weird hump). The system is still working though. It responds to my inputs (eg, turning it on/off, typing my password @ Windows Login, etc). What I want to do now is to transfer all of my important data from that laptop to my external drive. But I don't know how since the LCD screen is unreadable. I know I can connect it to an external monitor or a TV (I have a Samsung 1080p TV) but I don't know how. What cable should I purchase to connect the TV? Which ports on the laptop and TV should I connect it to? Do I need press something while/after connecting it? Can I boot my laptop using the TV?

• Graphics and USB devices freezing soon after OS loads

  I run Ubuntu/Windows dual boot. Last night I started the upgrade to Ubuntu 12.04, and my computer has not worked since in either Windows or Ubuntu. Here's what I got when I rebooted after the upgrade, and continue to get every time I boot: Gets to GRUB screen OK. Choose Ubuntu - black screen or crazy purple lines. At first I assumed something went wrong with the upgrade (often happens). Choose Windows - works fine, I log in, but soon after that the graphics freeze (sometimes with purple artifacts). The keyboard and mouse (both USB) also lose power at the same instant, and none of the USB ports have power to them. This happens sooner or later every time I boot. Update: the HDD also appears to lose power at the same point. I have tried a live CD, but my computer refuses to boot any CD even after disabling all other boot options in the BIOS. I have disconnected everything except keyboard, mouse, graphics card with one monitor, one RAM sick and HDD; no change. I also took the little battery out to reset CMOS. I am pretty sure no matter how wrong the Ubuntu upgrade went, it wouldn't cause the above symptoms in Windows. So the only explanation I can think of is that a hardware failure occurred at the same time. Some possible causes of this I can think of are: A couple of days before this, I added a third screen (which worked fine). About a week before, my house lost power in a storm (no ill effects over the past few days though). What can I do, other than buy a new motherboard/CPU and hope it works? Unfortunately I don't have another box to swap parts into to test at the moment.

However, I want to upgrade this to 4 monitors. My question is, what is the best way to do this? I remember in the past reading I need the same type of video card, however would any GeForce GTX work, or do i need that very specific model (EVGA 01G-P3-1366-TR GeForce GTX 460 SE)? Are there any issues I should be aware of before I order 2 new monitors and a video card? Are there video cards better setup for this? I know NVidia offers SLI, however I do not know if my mobo is compliant. My mobo also offers CrossFireX configuration, though from what it says only Radeon are compliant. Any suggestions / feedbacks on my best route with my current setup is appreciated. Even if you suggest buying 2 new identical video cards, as long as you can mention which and why that is better I really appreciate it. Note: I really do not do any gaming. I sometimes do some 3D work in Unity and very rarely in Maya. Besides that I mostly do all my computer work in Visual Studios and Photoshop. I however need the 2 extra monitors because I monitor sometimes 5 remote desktops at once and switching on only 2 is becoming a very big pain. Also seeing 3 side by side while I work on the 4th will be very helpful. Again, I appreciate any feedback, as I have googled a bunch and just want to make sure what I buy will work.
