• DMG image containing Mac OS X 10.6.5 update not recognized

  Hello, I want to update my Mac OS X 10.6.3 and want to use the manual package update (not Software Update) and I am having this problem for two days now. First I downloaded Mac OS X 10.6.5 Combo update and on the first opening it popped up a message saying "Unable to mount: disk image not recognized". I thought that somehow the image became corrupt during the download, so I downloaded it again. Same result. And I downloaded again. And again... No use, it still states that the .dmg is not recognized. Then I tried to update my system from 10.6.3 to 10.6.4 using the same method (package installer). It worked. And of course I downloaded the 10.6.5 update (not the combo package, but the 10.6.4 10.6.5 update package)... guess what. Not recognized. I don't understand how is this possible. Did anyone has the same problem? Please don't advice me to use software update, as I need to do that on multiple Macs Thanks in advance.

• Unable to connect to MSN network with Adium

  I'm new to the Mac world and tried both MSN Messenger for Mac (7.0 and 8.0 beta) as well as Adium to connect to the Windows network. I've enable 'Allow all incoming connections' in the Firewall settings. Windows Live Messenger works fine when connecting through the same router on my Windows laptop. I've triple checked my password and verified it through a web browser and Windows Live. Any ideas what my issue could be?

• Eclipse: Slow startup time

  Hello, I've got Eclipse 3.6.1 on my MacBook Air (2010), and I'm getting slowish startup times. Well, slow, compared to my Desktop, which is somewhat less powerful and a few years old). The startup generally takes 15 seconds, and of this, 4 is spent just on the Eclipse splash screen, before Eclipse loads anything. No projects are open at startup. I'm running Eclipse 3.6.1 Cocoa x64 build (vanilla) with the Zend Studio plugin. The machine has 4GB RAM, an SSD with over 64% free space, 1.6GHz (4MB L2 Cache). OS is Mac OS X 10.6.6, latest Java available, 1.6. For comparison, my Desktop, an old P4 3GHZ (512K L2 Cache) with a 7200RPM drive, under 40% free space, Eclipse (same config) loads in under 7 seconds, consistently. Note, this one is a Windows machine, with latest Java installed.

• Convert Mac font to Windows format?

  I have a font that was used on Mac OS X 10.5. Mac recognizes it as a font file. Windows Vista shows it as a "File". Changing the file extension doesn't work. I tried both .otf and .ttf and neither worked. (Surprise! I didn't thinks so, but I'd be a fool for asking if that was the answer, so I tried...) Perhaps I need to try a different extension? Are there any utilities to convert the font? A Windows equivalent? It's called Franco. (FrancoNormal, actually.) Thanks. EDIT: DFontSplitter didn't work. I saw something online about "data fork" and "resource fork" that has to match up. Can someone please explain that? Do I need both for a font conversion? What do I tell my graphic designer to send me? EDIT 2: The font doesn't work when downloaded to Mac OS X either. (A different machine from the original.) "Get Info" reveals that there is no file extension, leading me to believe that this is the newer font format. Where wold I find the the "data fork" and "resource fork" on the Mac? I want to be able to tell the designer exactly where to look. EDIT 3: DFontSplitter works on the original computer but not on my PC. I converted and emailed myself the fonts from the graphic designers laptop. I guess it has to do with the data being stored in a "fork" whatnot. Thanks, Matt for that article.   I"m running OS X 10.6.8 and I would like to use gparted to resize a partition on my SD card by following instructions on this page: http://mitchtech.net/easy-gui-install-re-partition-raspberry-pi-on-ubuntu/ However, it appears like gparted is suitable only for linux environment. I was wondering what alternatives do I have on os x to achieve increasing the size of the partition on my SD card? Would appreciate all / any advice.

  Trying to install MySQL via Homebrew. The install seems to work fine but i get an error: "Error: The linking step did not complete successfully The formula built, but is not symlinked into /usr/local You can try again using `brew link mysql'" Naturally, after this I ran: brew link mysql Which spat out: Error: Could not symlink file: /usr/local/Cellar/mysql/5.5.20/include/typelib.h /usr/local/include is not writable. You should change its permissions. So I ran it with sudo and got a "cowardly refusing to brew link mysql".

  Upgraded to 10.6 recently. 10.5 would connect to my home network whenever I was home. 10.6 constantly pops up the network selection dialog and asks me what network I want to join. I click my home network and the password is already entered (so it "remembers" the network). "Remember network" is checked... but it does it every time. How do I get 10.6 to connect to networks automatically whenever it sees them?

• Why is my path not working in zshell?

  This is obviously really simple, but not if you don't know the answer :) I'm doing this in my .zsh PATH="~/scripts:$PATH" and if I do echo $PATH it appears as the first thing in the path. Yet this directory isn't included in the executable path (nor for tab-completion). What am I doing wrong? ls ~/scripts shows the directory as expected.

• Finder Using Nearly 100% CPU

  I'm having a problem where the Finder uses WAY too much CPU time. It's using up to 100% of one of my cores. I'm running 10.6.2 on a MacBook Pro w/ 6GB of RAM, plenty of fast (SSD) disk space. I also run DropBox and BackBlaze. I've tried disabling my third party stuff (DropBox and BackBlaze), but that doesn't seem to help. It's killing my battery life!

• Create a zip file that doesn't create a folder when opened, Mac OS X

  I am wondering if there is any way of easily creating a zip file that contains a bunch of files. However, when I double-click to open this zip file, I do not want it to create a subdirectory with the same name as the zip file, I just want all of the files to be extracted into the directory where the zip files is stored. Is there a certain flag I can add in terminal to do this, or any program that does this. Thanks for your help!

• Text Editor that hilights all instances of selection for Mac

  On Windows, I use Notepad++ which has the great feature of when I select a word, all instances of that word are also highlighted in the same document. I have found it very helpful for finding patterns in giant log files. I am wondering if there is a similar feature in a text editor on the Mac. I have looked into the documentation for TextWrangler and TextMate to no avail. Hopefully there is a way to do this so I can be more productive when working on a Mac. -- Note: in Notepad++ you do not have to do a keyboard shortcut to make this work... you just select some text and it does the highlighting for you automatically.

• 403 Forbidden Error when trying to view localhost on Apache

  I think my Apache must be all screwed up. I don't know if it ever worked. I just upgraded to Snow Leopard, and the first step on this tutorial is to start apache and check that it's working by opening http://localhost. It starts fine but when I go to localhost I get a 403 forbidden error. I don't know where to start figuring out how to fix it, so I wonder if a fresh install of Apache would do the trick. What do you think? Update: I found some error logs in /private/var/log/apache2/. Found this in one of the logs. After removing the old virtual hosts, adding my new localhost virtual host, and restarting apache, it seems to work. So I guess whenever I want to add a virtual host, I only need to add them to this file? Or is there a hosts file somewhere, like there is on Linux? Update: Yes, there is an /etc/hosts file that need to be changed to. Add the virtual host name to that file.

• Partition External Harddrive already using Time Machine?

  I have a 1TB external that I've used to backup my Mac for the past year using Time Machine. Unfortunately, my hard drive is getting close to full, and I'd like to move some of the stuff off of my Mac onto the same external drive. The problem is that the external drive is already full with my Time Machine Backups. I'd like to partition 750GB to the Time Machine Backups, and save the other 250GB for personal use. Is there any way I can go about this without corrupting my current backups? I'm willing to delete some of the older backups if necessary; again I'm just worried about corrupting the data.

  Hi, Running Ubuntu 10.04 in one office and we want a couple of Mac's in another office to be able to connect to shares on this computer. Want a fairly simple solution to this if one exists. Started looking at setting up a VPN using PPTP but it seems quite complicated. Also seen mention of VNC but this seems more related to sharing desktops and all i want to do is share a directory. Could i just install open SSH and have the Mac users mount a share over SSH using public/private key encryption?

• How to set up TightVNC Java viewer index.html on web server?

  I've got the Java TightVNC viewer applet set up with the provided index.html on my Mac OS X 10.6.3 with web sharing enabled. Using a remote computer I was able to get to the webpage but I only see a white box with an X (for error?) that represents where the viewer is supposed to be. Any ideas on how to get this to work? I've tried to set the port (in index.html) to 5900 and 5901, none worked. Are any of these the default VNC port for Mac OS X 10.6.3? Also, I've activated Screen Sharing and Remote Login in System Preferences, allowing VNC viewers to connect. • $PATH in Vim doesn't match Terminal

  I'm using MacVim and when I don't launch it from the Terminal (mvim) its $PATH does not include what I have set in my .bash_profile. It only seems to have the default values, /usr/bin:/bin:/usr/sbin:/sbin. I'm running OS X 10.5.8. Even if I could set it manually in my .vimrc that would be okay, though I would prefer it to pull from the same place as Terminal. I've tried following what one site suggested, adding let $PATH += /blah/foo:/bar/etc to no avail. Edit/Solution: See my answer below. MacVim has an option to fix this.

• Focus issues in OS X Spaces

  Spaces rarely returns focus to my last used window. Haven't been able to peg universally reproducible steps, but spend any time switching among spaces and windows and you'll come across this. It often happens with Finder windows. I'm thinking this is because Mac OS X treats Finder as a single app, so bringing Finder forward in one space brings it forward in all spaces. Extremely annoying! Anyone have a fix for this?

Are there best practices for making this as secure as possible? I found http://www.mobydisk.com/techres/securing_remote_desktop.html but it's unclear how much of that is still relevant for current versions of RDP and Windows Server. I know I can tunnel RDP over ssh, but is that overkill or redundant?

• Gray Progress Bar in Macbook Boot caused by Partition Fault

  Here's my problem: When I try to load my macbook it shows the gray progress bar. It takes a while to fill the whole progress and after it macbook just shuts down. I tried to boot from recovery partition and run Disk Utility to repair it. Disk Utility showed my "Macintosh HD" in a gray color and failed to repair it. I thought all my data was lost, but then I tried the following: So I booted into ubunto from live usb and it successfully mounted my macintosh hd hfs+ partition. Parted shows me the following partitions on my disk: Disk /dev/sda: 500GB Sector size (logical/physical): 512B/512B Partition Table: gpt Number Start End Size File system Name Flags 1 20.5kB 210MB 210MB fat32 EFI System Partition boot 2 210MB 499GB 499GB hfs+ Macintosh HD 3 499GB 500GB 650MB hfs+ Recovery HD Seems legit except for FAT32 for EFI System Partition. Since all my data is okay and backed up what should I do to recover the system. I don't really want to reinstall all the system though I believe there's a command to make it allright in linux.   I was wondering if there is a keyboard shortcut to choose "Don't Save" when an alert comes up. I'm talking specifically about Photoshop but the same action happens in many applications. It's the standard pop up that shows when you are canceling out of a window and haven't saved the document or project. To be clear it says "Don't Save", "Cancel" and "Save". Save is generally the default but I was just curious if there's a way to choose "Don't Save" without clicking. • How to repair Mac OS X without reinstalling?

  I have an Intel PC. I have installed iDeneb Mac OS X in my PC. It's running fine. After that I thought about installing Snow Leopard for running the iPad SDK. So I bought a retail Snow Leopard and booted it with Rebel EFI boot loader. When I was installing Snow Leopard, at the end of installation, setup gives an error. So I restarted my PC and boot with Rebel and I saw that the Mac was there so I booted that into safe mode and Mac OS X runs. After that I installed iPad SDK. But when I try to create an application, Xcode is not responsive. It hangs when I choose new project, give it a name and save it on disk. After just as I gave name and choose save it hangs. Is there any way I can repair my Mac OS X without reinstalling? I have also been unable to boot into normal mode and also without Rebel CD. So I want to boot without Rebel CD and also want to run iPad SDK.
