  • Ideas for Computer Science related Microteaching

    This semester, I will be a TA for an introductory computer science course at my university. As part of TA training, I'll be doing something called Microteaching, which is where I teach for 5-7 minutes in front of a small audience (4-5 people) and I am reviewed on my teaching style. Among being critiqued on my personal things like confidence and eye contact, I will be critiqued on how well I know the subject material, as well as how interesting it is to the audience. So my question is: Can you offer me any suggestions of computer science related topics that: I can begin and finish teaching in a span of 5-7 minutes Are fun to learn about Are accessible to a general engineering (but not necessarily computer science) audience Some topics I have considered: Teaching how to write Hello World in some simple language Introducing a synchronization problem like dining philosophers

  • Soql query to get all related contacts of an account in an opportunity

    i have SOQL query which queries for some records based on a where condition. select id, name,account.name ... <other fields> from opportunity where eventname__c='Test Event' i also need to get the related contact details for the account in the opportunity. ie i need to add the email ids of contact who all are part of the account in the opportunity. For each opportunity, i need to get all the contacts emailids who are associated with the account in opportunity. I cant really figure out how to approach this. referring the documentation i can get the contact info of a account using the query SELECT Name, ( SELECT LastName FROM Contacts ) FROM Account How can i use this along with opportunity?     What language do you find incredibly useful that no one else seems to care about? I am not looking for the language with the coolest features, but the language that makes you the most productive. I realize that a productive language that no one uses is a bit of an oxymoron. My personal choice would probably be ruby without rails, but I am sure others can come up with some better answers.

  • Programming style: should you return early if a guard condition is not satisfied?

    One thing I've sometimes wondered is which is the better style out of the two shown below (if any)? Is it better to return immediately if a guard condition hasn't been satisfied, or should you only do the other stuff if the guard condition is satisfied?     I'm new to relational databases and all the material I've read covered primary and foreign keys, normal forms, and joins but left out to populate the database once it's created. How do you import a CSV file so the fields match their related table? Say you were tying to build a beer database and had a CSV file with each line as a record. Header: brewer, beer_name, country, city, state, beer_category, beer_type, alcohol_content Record 1: Anheuser-Busch, Budweiser, United States, St. Louis, Mo, Pale lager, Regular, 5.0% Record 2: Anheuser-Busch, Bud Light, United States, St. Louis, Mo, Pale lager Light, 4.2% Record 3: Miller Brewing Company, Miller Lite, United States, Milwaukee, WI, Pale lager, Light, 4.2% You can create a "Brewer" table and a "Beer" table. When importing how does you connect the primary keys between the tables?

  • Looking for Programming Language that allows you to change true and false.

    For my curiosity sake I'm looking for a dynamic object oriented language that allows you to change true to false and vice versa. Something like this: true = false, false = true; This should also affect any conditional statements, therefore 42 == 42 should return False. Basically, with this premise, nothing in the language would be safe from the programmer. Is there any language like this?

    I'm using ECJ with Java. I have an army of individuals who I all want to have the same brain. Basically, I'd like to evolve the brains using GP. I want things like "if-on-enemy-territory" and "if-sense-target" for if statements and "go-home" or "move-randomly" or "shoot" for terminals. However, these statements need to be full executable Java code. How can I do this with ECJ?

    I have two related models (one to many) in my django app and When I do something like this ObjBlog = Blog() objBlog.name = 'test blog' objEntry1 = Entry() objEntry1.title = 'Entry one' objEntry2 = Entry() objEntry2.title = 'Entry Two' objBlog.entry_set.add(objEntry1) objBlog.entry_set.add(objEntry2) I get an error which says "null value in column and it violates the foreign key not null constraint". None of my model objects have been saved. Do I have to save the "objBlog" before I could set the entries? I was hoping I could call the save method on objBlog to save it all. NOTE: I am not creating a blog engine and this is just an example.

  • Approach for altering Primary Key from GUID to BigInt in SQL Server related tables

    I have two tables with 10-20 million rows that have GUID primary keys and at leat 12 tables related via foreign key. The base tables have 10-20 indexes each. We are moving from GUID to BigInt primary keys. I'm wondering if anyone has any suggestions on an approach. Right now this is the approach I'm pondering: Drop all indexes and fkeys on all the tables involved. Add 'NewPrimaryKey' column to each table Make the key identity on the two base tables Script the data change "update table x, set NewPrimaryKey = y where OldPrimaryKey = z Rename the original primarykey to 'oldprimarykey' Rename the 'NewPrimaryKey' column 'PrimaryKey' Script back all the indexes and fkeys Does this seem like a good approach? Does anyone know of a tool or script that would help with this? TD: Edited per additional information.     I've read lot of articles saying, that Java EE is most popular enterprise solution nowadays. Let's not argue if it is most popular or second most popular or what. The thing is : I see almost all web pages with extension like .html, .php and .aspx. Why there is (almost) none .JSP ? Why so ease to find ASP.NET pages if it is supposed to be less popular? Please I am not programming with Java EE (yet) so don't blame me, if I am completely wrong. The answer with patience would be greatly appreciated!

  • Accessing non-related entities in LinqToSql entity classes

    In LinqToSql, if I want to access a non-related entity in an entity partial class, how do I do this without creating a new DataContext? Here's the scenario: I have the tables Client, IssueType and ClientIssueType. A Client may specify a list of IssueTypes if they do not want to use the default IssueTypes. I have the default IssueTypes in the ClientIssueType table with a ClientId of null. In my Client partial I'd like to try to retrieve all IssueTypes, and if none are found, return all default IssueTypes. The only way I can see of accessing the IssueTypes with a null ClientId is by accessing the table through a new DataContext, which is problematic once I want to start assigning them to Issues. Where am I going wrong?

  • Which programming language is easiest to get a junior position in?

    I do not have a CS degree but I have lots of intermediate experience with many languages (PHP, C#, Objective-C, Java, VBScript, Actionscript, Javascript, Ruby, etc), mostly freelance or pastime. I have a little experience with Linux (Ubuntu), and a decent bit with Windows. When I look at different languages I find that am interested in most (except maybe VB), but I am not sure what to focus on. So what would be the easiest language to get a job in? Java? PHP? Or would it be easier to get a job as a Junior DBA if I learned Oracle or SQL Server in my spare time?

    Here is the drill, I want to version a database. I have done this before using multiple rows where the table primary key becomes a combination of the row id and either a datestamp or a version #. Now I want to version a table that depends on many other small tables. Versioning each table will be a giant PITA, so I am looking for good options to verion a schema where the data to be versioned spreads over multiple tables. All related tables are properly keyed with foreign key relationships. The database is currently on Sql Server 2005.

  • Idiomatic scheme and generic programming, why only on numbers ?

    Hi, In Scheme, procedures like +, -, *, / works on different types of numbers, but we don't much see any other generic procedures. For example, length works only on list so that vector-length and string-length are needed. I guess it comes from the fact that the language doesn't really offer any mechanism for defining generic procedure (except cond of course) like "type classes" in Haskell or a standardized object system. Is there an idiomatic scheme way to handle generic procedures that I'm not aware of ?
