• Is it possible to force a credential check every time a network share is opened in Windows 7?

  I am running Windows 7 Ultimate and I have mapped a network share to a drive letter. The first time that I open the share, I am prompted for login credentials as expected. I do not select the "Remember my credentials" checkbox and can login successfully, but every time that I re-open the share during the session, I do not need to re-enter my credentials. Is there any way to force a credential check every time that I re-open the share? I do not want to perform a reboot every time that I want to "re-lock" the share.

  I've got a backup script written in Python which creates the destination directory before copying the source directory to it. I've configured it to use /external-backup as the destination, which is where I mount an external hard drive. I just ran the script without the hard drive being turned on (or being mounted) and found that it was working as normal, albeit making a backup on the internal hard drive, which has nowhere near enough space to back itself up. My question is: how can I check whether the volume is mounted in the right place before writing to it? If I can detect that /external-backup isn't mounted, I can prevent writing to it. The bonus question is why was this allowed, when the OS knows that directory is supposed to live on another device, and what would happen to the data (on the internal hard drive) should I later mount that device (the external hard drive)? Clearly there can't be two copies on different devices at the same path! Thanks in advance!

  I use Google to administer my e-mails and I run Nginx + PHP. If I want to check incoming mail to interact with each message subject (to trigger an action), as far as I know, I have only two options: 1) access Google via IMAP PHP / cron job or 2) forward the messages to my server where I can have a subdomain set to pipe the messages to a PHP script. Frankly, I'd preffer the first option because I have already all the IMAP functions tested and done. And if the second solution is really the best, I'd preffer to use Postfix. However, id like some light grom somebody who has already browsed this unknown waters. Thank you.

  According to the man page for launchctl (emphasis mine):    -w   Overrides the Disabled key and sets it to false. In previous versions, this option would modify the configuration file. Now the state of the Disabled key is stored elsewhere on-disk. Because the current state of the disabled flag is no longer set in the .plist file itself, checking for the Disabled key is no longer an accurate way to tell if the service will run on next boot. Where is this "elsewhere on-disk"? More to the point (and more importantly), how does one check whether this flag is set? Also, is it possible to set a service to run on next boot without forcing it to start immediately (as with launchctl load -w /Library/LaunchDaemons/my-service.plist)?

  I am using internet 8 and under internet options advanced there is not box to check to enable java. I was told to reset which did nto work. I have tried to uninstall java 6-21 32 bit but I get windows installer error 1723. I brought up the java console and made sure it was pointing to the right target. But I guess the main thing is I have no enable java under internet options, advanced. It was under security to enable java scripting. Any answers?

  I have a common git "post-receive" script for several projects, and it needs to perform different actions if an /app/ or /public/ folder exists in the root. Using: FOLDERS=`git ls-tree -d --name-only -z master`; I can see the directory listing, and I would like to use the RegExp support in bash to run something like: if [[ "$FOLDERS" =~ app ]]; then ... fi But that won't work if there was something like an "app lication" folder... I specified the "-z" option in the git "ls-tree" command so I could use the \0 (null) character as a separator, but not sure how to test for that in the bash RegExp. Likewise I know there is support for specifying a particular path in the ls-tree command, and could then pipe that to "wc -l", but I'd have thought it was quicker to get a full directory listing of the root (not recursive) then test for the 2 (or more) folders with the returned output.   Hi all, Just a quick question – my server is running at my house serving www pages at www.javawag.com. The problem is that my home internet connection keeps dropping randomly - for about 10 mins at a time. This is only an intermittent problem and will go away soon I hope. However, my server doesn't recover properly - when the connection comes back, I can still access it at 192.168.0.8 (locally) without any issue, but at www.javawag.com there's no reply! (Just an aside - my home internet connection is dynamic ISP, the domain www.javawag.com points to javawag.dyndns.org which in turn points to my IP, updated every minute by ddclient on the server) Is there some way for the server to check if it's accessible from the outside world periodically, and if not restart Apache/reboot? Oh, and if I reboot the problem fixes itself also! Javawag

  How I should check if a program is a virus in VMware? Some programs I do need admin ability to install and it makes sense. But how do I know if it's doing more than I want? Some thoughts are: How many processes open when I launch the application What is added to the startup tab in msconfig If any services are added. That's pretty much all my ideas. Even if it does something I recognize I wouldn't know if it's necessary or not. What are some rule of thumb? -Edit- What about registries, can I use that information to help? Maybe have a scanner tell me if the application I just used has messed with sections (like bootup) it shouldn't have?

  I have an odd problem where one of my users' UsrClass.dat hive does not load, which causes .NET ClickOnce applications to fail to start. They are one of several users on a Windows 2000 terminal server, all the others have no problem. Nothing is mentioned in any logs. I can manually load the hive to the correct HKEY_USERS\..._Classes location using REGEDT32, which works around the problem, but I've no idea what could be causing this in the first place. Any ideas what to check here, or any diagnostic tools or procedures that would help?

  I am writing a script to do some apt commands, but I am running into potential issues of the apt/dpkg databases being locked so my script bails. I want to check the lock files (i.e. /var/lib/dpkg/lock) before doing anything just like apt does when it runs it's command, but I can't figure out how apt is performing the lock. The lock file is always there, and apt-get is not doing a flock on the file. How else would it be checking to see if it is in use? From an strace I see that apt-get opens the file, but that is it. In my script, I can open the file while apt-get has it open as well.

• Worker processes not starting in IIS 7.5. What should I check?

  I have a Windows 7 machine (Windows version 6.1.7601 SP1 Build 7601) with IIS installed. At some point the installation appears to have become 'corrupted' in some way, as any requests are now met with the message: Service Unavailable HTTP Error 503. The service is unavailable. In IIS manager IIS is started and the app pool I am using reports itself as 'Started', yet there is no w3wp.exe process listed in the process list in task manager (I am a local admin and have clicked the 'Show processes from all users' button. I have enabled logging for the web site (at default location of %SystemDrive%\inetpub\logs\LogFiles), but this folder is empty. I am assuming that this log output is written by w3wp.exe as it handles requests (no w3wp.exe, no log file?). Presumably there is another layer of request handling that is responsible for starting the worker processes, does thsi layer have log files I can check, and/or can I uninstall/re-install that layer?   I have a bit of a problem with a WSUS box, I backed up the WsusContent folder (about 180 gig) to a second machine, wiped the first machine then realized I don't have the database folder! I can not find any articles / guidance on this, I have re installed WSUS however it does not find the other files which where previsously downloaded (I guess the database being the reason). If I do a reset it will force it to download the ones it has again I guess and does not check what is still to be downloaded? Sigh... love / hate WSUS at the moment with a passion :) Thanks for any help.

For some applications, I can even automate the interface, but it's difficult in Firefox, because the main window title is unpredictable (it depends on which web page is active), and all Firefox windows seem to use the exact same window class name.

  I'm using Mp3Tag do edit Id3 tags in my mp3 files. In the editor everything looks ok, but in my iTunes, some of them just ge messed up. The artist isn't read, Album Artist doesn't show up, this kind of thing. It's just random, some are messed up, some aren't. How do I "debug" this problem? How can I check what is written in my mp3 metadata, if possible, running all my mp3 in a batch (since I have 100gb)?   I have email accounts on several domains that use Google Mail, and thus far I've only ever used POP to send and receive mail from a single inbox. This is quite functional, and as long as I remember to select the appropriate FROM address when starting a new thread, mostly works without any additional thought: messages received on account A are replied to via account A, and so on. My only complaint is the lag -- I've seen sometimes as much as a half hour between messages arriving in an inbox before being imported into my primary inbox via POP. My question is this: Google also supports IMAP. Would that be in any way preferable over POP access? Reduced lag would be nice, but not at a general speed cost, if everything I do has to check another mailbox too.
