  • Styling an Input Field

    - by John
    Hello When I try to alter the CSS for the input field named "title" below, which is classed by "submissionfield", the position changes, but the height, length, and font of the field do not change. How could I make the height of the input field "title" 22 px, the length 550 px, and the font Times New Roman? The CSS below does not do it. Thanks in advance, John echo '<form action="http://www...com/.../submit2.php" method="post"> <input type="hidden" value="'.$_SESSION['loginid'].'" name="uid"> <div class="submissiontitle"><label for="title">Story Title:</label></div> <div class="submissionfield"><input name="title" type="title" id="title" maxlength="1000"></div> <div class="urltitle"><label for="url">Link:</label></div> <div class="urlfield"><input name="url" type="url" id="url" maxlength="500"></div> <div class="submissionbutton"><input name="submit" type="submit" value="Submit"></div> </form> '; The CSS: .submissiontitle { position:absolute; width:100px; left:30px; top:200px; text-align: left; margin-bottom:3px; padding:0px; font-family:Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12px; color:#000000; } .submissionfield { position:absolute; width:550px; left:50px; top:230px; text-align: left; margin-bottom:3px; padding:0px; font-family: "Times New Roman", Times, serif; font-size: 22px; color:#000000; } .urltitle { position:absolute; width:250px; left:30px; top:300px; text-align: left; margin-bottom:3px; padding:0px; font-family:Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12px; color:#000000; } .urlfield { position:absolute; width:550px; left:30px; top:330px; text-align: left; margin-bottom:3px; padding:0px; font-family:Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 11px; color:#000000; } .submissionbutton { position:absolute; width:250px; left:30px; top:380px; text-align: left; margin-bottom:3px; padding:0px; font-family:Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 11px; color:#000000; } .submittitle { position:absolute; width:250px; left:30px; top:150px; text-align: left; margin-bottom:3px; padding:0px; font-family:Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12px; color:#000000; }

  • What broke in this Javascript 1.2 snippet?

    - by Rob Kelley
    A friend has pointed me to his old website and says "the submit form just stopped working a while ago. I'm sure it's something simple." The form asks a child for a certain word from a book, and based on the answer, it should redirect the child to a success page or a failure page. It's using Javascript 1.2, circa 2001. You can see this form in in-action at: http://www.secrethidingplaces.com/login1.html Any idea why it's failing? The HTML does this: <script src="password.js" type="text/javascript" language="JavaScript1.2"> </script> <script type="text/javascript" language="JavaScript1.2"> <!-- function showRightPage () { return window.location.href = "extra.html" ; } function showWrongPage () { return window.location.href = "sorry2.html" ; } //--> </script> and then this: document.write ( '<form name="questionForm" action="javascript:checkAnswer()" method="post">' ) ; ... document.write ( '<input type="text" name="userAnswer" value="" size="90">' ) ; document.write ( '<INPUT TYPE="image" NAME="submit" SRC="stock/btn_send.gif" width="121" height="41" BORDER="0" ALT="submit">' ) ; document.write ( '\</p>' ) ; document.write ( '\</form>' ) ; I'm assuming there's something ugly in CheckAnswer from ./password.js . I can hack the form to bypass that javascript and go straight to the success page: document.write ( '<form name="questionForm" action="extra.html" method="post">' ) ; but I'd like to help my friend get his kids site working again. The CheckAnswer function is below. Is something going wrong in here? function checkAnswer () { currentAnswer = answersArray [ choiceNumber ] ; if (agt.indexOf("msie") != -1) { rawAnswer = document.questionForm.userAnswer.value ; } else { rawAnswer = document.callThis.document.questionForm.userAnswer.value ; } lcAnswer = rawAnswer.toLowerCase ( ) ; includedAnswer = lcAnswer.indexOf ( "currentAnswer" ) ; zadaAnswer = lcAnswer.indexOf ( "zada" ) ; brendanAnswer = lcAnswer.indexOf ( "brendan" ) ; nineAnswer = lcAnswer.indexOf ( "nine" ) ; thirtyAnswer = lcAnswer.indexOf ( "thirty" ) ; if ( choiceNumber == 0 ) { if ( includedAnswer == -1 && zadaAnswer == -1 && brendanAnswer == -1 ) { checked = "wrong" ; } } if ( choiceNumber == 8 ) { if ( includedAnswer == -1 && zadaAnswer == -1 && nineAnswer == -1 ) { checked = "wrong" ; } } if ( choiceNumber == 16 ) { if ( includedAnswer == -1 && zadaAnswer == -1 && thirtyAnswer == -1 ) { checked = "wrong" ; } } if ( choiceNumber != 0 && choiceNumber != 8 && choiceNumber != 16 ) { if ( includedAnswer == -1 && zadaAnswer == -1 ) { checked = "wrong" ; } } if ( checked == "wrong" ) { showWrongPage () ; } else { showRightPage () ; } } Thanks!

  • Can't mass-assign protected attributes -- unsolved issue

    - by nfriend21
    I have read about 10 different posts here about this problem, and I have tried every single one and the error will not go away. So here goes: I am trying to have a nested form on my users/new page, where it accepts user-attributes and also company-attributes. When you submit the form: Here's what my error message reads: ActiveModel::MassAssignmentSecurity::Error in UsersController#create Can't mass-assign protected attributes: companies app/controllers/users_controller.rb:12:in `create' Here's the code for my form: <%= form_for @user do |f| %> <%= render 'shared/error_messages', object: f.object %> <%= f.fields_for :companies do |c| %> <%= c.label :name, "Company Name"%> <%= c.text_field :name %> <% end %> <%= f.label :name %> <%= f.text_field :name %> <%= f.label :email %> <%= f.text_field :email %> <%= f.label :password %> <%= f.password_field :password %> <%= f.label :password_confirmation %> <%= f.password_field :password_confirmation %> <br> <% if current_page?(signup_path) %> <%= f.submit "Sign Up", class: "btn btn-large btn-primary" %> Or, <%= link_to "Login", login_path %> <% else %> <%= f.submit "Update User", class: "btn btn-large btn-primary" %> <% end %> <% end %> Users Controller: class UsersController < ApplicationController def index @user = User.all end def new @user = User.new end def create @user = User.create(params[:user]) if @user.save session[:user_id] = @user.id #once user account has been created, a session is not automatically created.   • Edit of self referencing HABTM in cakephp works, sometimes

    - by Odegard
    I'm using a self referencing HABTM model with Participants. You sign up for an event and when you log in to your reservation/profile you see a list of other participants and you can choose to add yourself and others into various groups; share hotel room, share transportation from airport etc. What I've managed so far: 1) In my profile I see the list of all other participants with checkboxes. Great so far. 2) Adding another participant works fine. Next time I edit, the participant I added is shown as checked. 3) Removing another participant works fine too as long as you still have checked participants before you submit! Again, with words: There are 3 participants. I'm logged in as one of them, and I see the 2 other people on the participants list. I choose to check both of them. This works fine (always). Later I choose to remove one of them (by unchecking the checkbox and hitting submit). This also works fine (always). If I want to remove the last checkbox... nothing is updated (always!). What's curious is that I can add and remove any odd combination of participants and it will always work UNLESS I choose to remove every participants in one go (removing a one and only participant is a special case of "remove all checked participants"). As far as I know, HABTMs work by first deleting all relations, then re-saving them. I can see that in my tables when I remove, add, remove, add the same participant over and over again - the id on the HABTM table is always increasing. When I deselect all participants at once, however, the relations are not updated. The ids stay the same, so it's like the save never happened. This behaviour is so specific and peculiar, I have a feeling I'm missing something obvious here. Anyway, here's the relevant code: Model class Participant extends AppModel { var $hasAndBelongsToMany = array( 'buddy' = array( 'className' = 'Participant', 'joinTable' = 'participants_participants', 'foreignKey' = 'participant_id', 'associationForeignKey' = 'buddy_id', 'unique' = true, ) ); Controller function edit($id = null) { if (!$id && empty($this-data)) { $this-Session-setFlash(__('Invalid Participant', true)); $this-redirect(array('action'='index')); } if (!empty($this-data)) { if ($this-Participant-saveAll($this-data)) { $this-Session-setFlash(__('The Participant has been saved', true)); $this-redirect(array('action'='index')); } else { $this-Session-setFlash(__('The Participant could not be saved. Please, try again.', true)); } } if (empty($this-data)) { $this-data = $this-Participant-read(null, $id); } // Fetching all participants except yourself $allParticipants = $this-Participant-find('list', array('conditions' = array('participant.id ' = $id))); // Fetching every participant that has added you to their list $allBuddies = $this-Participant-ParticipantsParticipant-find('list', array( 'conditions' = array('buddy_id' = $id), 'fields' = 'ParticipantsParticipant.participant_id', 'order' = 'ParticipantsParticipant.participant_id ASC' )); $this-set(compact('allParticipants','allBuddies')); } View echo $form-create('Participant'); echo $associations-habtmCheckBoxes($allParticipants, $this-data['buddy'], 'buddy', 'div', '\'border: 1px solid #000;\'', '\'border: 1px solid #000;\''); echo $form-end('Submit'); I'm using a slightly modified helper, habtmCheckBoxes, found here: http://cakeforge.org/snippet/detail.php?type=snippet&id=190 It works like this: function habtmCheckBoxes($rows=array(), $selectedArr=array(), $modelName, $wrapTag='p', $checkedDiv, $uncheckedDiv) {}

  • piecing together a jquery form mailer

    - by Joel
    Hi guys, My newbieness is shining through here...I managed to piece together a form mailer that works great, but now I need to add two more fields, and I'm at a loss as to how to do it. Over the months, I have commented out some things I didn't need, but now I'm stuck. I borrowed from this tutorial to make the original form: http://trevordavis.net/blog/tutorial/ajax-forms-with-jquery/ But then I cannibalized it to make an email signup form for a newsletter, so the fields I need are: recipient email (me-hard coded in) senders email address subject (hardcoded in) first name and city in the body of the message For my form, I have this: <div> <?php include('verify.php'); ?> <form action="index_success.php" method="post" id="sendEmail" class="email"> <h3 class="register2">Newsletter Signup:</h3> <ul class="forms email"> <li class="name"><label for="yourName">Name: </label> <input type="text" name="yourName" class="info" id="yourName" value=" " /><br> </li> <li class="city"><label for="yourCity">City: </label> <input type="text" name="yourCity" class="info" id="yourCity" value=" " /><br> </li> <li class="email"><label for="emailFrom">Email: </label> <input type="text" name="emailFrom" class="info" id="emailFrom" value="<?= $_POST['emailFrom']; ?>" /> <?php if(isset($emailFromError)) echo '<span class="error">'.$emailFromError.'</span>'; ?> </li> <li class="buttons email"> <button type="submit" id="submit">Send</button> <input type="hidden" name="submitted" id="submitted" value="true" /> </li> </ul> </form> </div> emailcontact.js: $(document).ready(function(){ $("#submit").click(function(){ $(".error").hide(); var hasError = false; var emailReg = /^([\w-\.]+@([\w-]+\.)+[\w-]{2,4})?$/; var emailFromVal = $("#emailFrom").val(); if(emailFromVal == '') { $("#emailFrom").after('<span class="error">You forgot to enter the email address to send from.</span>'); hasError = true; } else if(!emailReg.test(emailFromVal)) { $("#emailFrom").after('<span class="error">Enter a valid email address to send from.</span>'); hasError = true; } var subjectVal = $("#subject").val(); if(subjectVal == '') { $("#subject").after('<span class="error">You forgot to enter your name.</span>'); hasError = true; } var messageVal = $("#message").val(); if(messageVal == '') { $("#message").after('<span class="error">You forgot to enter your city.</span>'); hasError = true; } if(hasError == false) { $(this).hide(); $("#sendEmail li.buttons").append('<img src="/wp-content/themes/default/images/template/loading.gif" alt="Loading" id="loading" />'); $.post("/includes/sendemail.php", //emailTo: emailToVal, { emailFrom: emailFromVal, subject: subjectVal, message: messageVal }, function(data){ $("#sendEmail").slideUp("normal", function() { $("#sendEmail").before('<h3 class="register2">Success!</h3><p class="emailbox">You are on the Newsletter email list.</p>'); }); } ); } return false; }); }); sendmail.php: <?php $mailTo = $_POST['emailTo']; $mailFrom = $_POST['emailFrom']; $subject = $_POST['yourName']; $message = $_POST['yourCity']; mail('[email protected]','Rattletree Newsletter', 'Name='.$subject. ' City='.$message, "From: ".$mailFrom); ?> Thanks for any help! I'm going crosseyed trying to figure this one out.

  • User welcome message in php

    - by user225269
    How do I create a user welcome message in php. So that the user who has been logged on will be able to see his username. I have this code, but it doesn't seem to work. <?php $con = mysql_connect("localhost","root","nitoryolai123$%^"); if (!$con) { die('Could not connect: ' . mysql_error()); } mysql_select_db("school", $con); $result = mysql_query("SELECT * FROM users WHERE Username='$username'"); while($row = mysql_fetch_array($result)) { echo $row['Username']; echo "<br />"; } ?> I'm trying to make use of the data that is inputted in this login form: <form name="form1" method="post" action="verifylogin.php"> <td> <table border="0" cellpadding="3" cellspacing="1" bgcolor=""> <tr> <td colspan="16" height="25" style="background:#5C915C; color:white; border:white 1px solid; text-align: left"><strong><font size="2">Login User</strong></td> </tr> <tr> <td width="30" height="35"><font size="2">Username:</td> <td width="30"><input name="myusername" type="text" id="idnum" maxlength="5"></td> </tr> <tr> <td width="30" height="35" ><font size="2">Password:</td> <td width="30"><input name="mypassword" type="password" id="lname" maxlength="15"></td> </tr> <td align="right" width="30"><td align="right" width="30"><input type="submit" name="Submit" value="Submit" /></td> <td align="right" width="30"><input type="reset" name="Reset" value="Reset"></td></td> </tr> </form> But this, verifylogin.php, seems to be in the way. <?php $host="localhost"; $username="root"; $password="nitoryolai123$%^"; $db_name="school"; $tbl_name="users"; mysql_connect("$host", "$username", "$password")or die("cannot connect"); mysql_select_db("$db_name")or die("cannot select DB"); $myusername=$_POST['myusername']; $mypassword=$_POST['mypassword']; $myusername = stripslashes($myusername); $mypassword = stripslashes($mypassword); $myusername = mysql_real_escape_string($myusername); $mypassword = mysql_real_escape_string($mypassword); $sql="SELECT * FROM $tbl_name WHERE username='$myusername' and password='$mypassword'"; $result=mysql_query($sql); $count=mysql_num_rows($result); if($count==1){ session_register("myusername"); session_register("mypassword"); header("location:userpage.php"); } else { echo "Wrong Username or Password"; } ?> How do I do it? I always get this error when I run it: Notice: Undefined variable: username in C:\wamp\www\exp\userpage.php on line 53 Can you recommend of an easier on how I can achieve the same thing?

  • PHP $_GET and $_POST are returning empty arrays--trying to paginate SQL data

    - by George88
    I have set up the following: Database class ($db) Pagination class ($paginator) I am attempting to write a basic system to let me administrate pages. I have a page "page_manager.php" in which I include both my database class (database.php) and my pagination class (paginate.php). In my pagination class I have a function which echoes my SQL data. I've come up with a way to echo an HTML < select element with the necessary IDs, which allows me to successfully echo the corresponding results (10 per page), based on the value of the < select element. So, "1" will echo the first 10 results in the database, "2" will echo from 11-20, "3" will echo from 21-30, etc., etc.. I have added an onChange event to the < select element which will copy its value (using "this.value") to a hidden form field. I then submit this form using document.getElementById().submit(); This will then add the $_GET variable to the URL, so the URL becomes ".../?pagenumber_form=X". However, when I try to grab this value back from the URL, the $_GET['pagenumber_form'] is empty. Some code: <span style='font-family: tahoma; font-size: 10pt;'>Page #</span> <select id="page_number_selection" onchange='javascript: document.getElementById("pagenumber_form").value = this.value; document.getElementById("pagenumber").submit();'> <?php for($i = 1; $i <= $this->num_pages; $i++) echo"<option id='" . $i . "'>" . $i . "</option>"; ?> </select> <form name="pagenumber" id="pagenumber" action="" method="get"> <input type="text" name="pagenumber_form" id="pagenumber_form" /> </form> So, I've tried using $_POST as well, but the same thing happens. I want to use $_GET, for a couple of reasons: it's easier to see what is happening with my values and the data I'm using doesn't need to be secure. To recap: the $_GET variable is being added to the URL when I change the < select element, and the corresponding value gets added to the URL as: ".../?pagenumber_form=X", but when I try to use the value in PHP, for example... $page_number = $_GET['pagenumber_form']; ... I get a NULL value. :-( Can anybody help me out please? Thank you. EDIT: I've just made a discovery. If I move my print_r($_GET) to my main index page, then the superglobals are returning as expected. My site structure is like this: index.php - JavaScript buttons use AJAX HTTP requests to include the "responseText" as the .innerHTML of my main < div . The "responseText" is the contents the page itself, in this case page_manager.php, which in turn includes pagination.php. So in other words, my site is built from PHP includes, which doesn't seem to be compatible with HTTP superglobals. Any idea how I can get around this problem? Thank you :-).

  • Filter syslog in php functions, then display contents in JS div?

    - by qx3rt
    Let's revise this question with a new approach...I have three files: logtail.php, ajax.js and index.php. My goal is to create a syslog viewer (Linux). On index.php I made a div where I want to display only the filtered contents of the syslog. I must filter the contents in logtail.php. I have to use a shell_exec and | grep the contents with multiple different regexes. Right now I | grep the entire syslog file and it displays live in the log viewer, but my filters are not working as planned. I need help figuring out how to use $_GET to grab only the contents from the syslog that the user wants to see. I have a text field and submit button prepared for that in my index.php file. Should I use functions (tried this already)? Or is there a better approach? Can you give me some examples? logtail.php //Executes a shell script to grab all file contents from syslog on the device //Explodes that content into an array by new line, sorts from most recent entry to oldest entry if (file_exists($filename = '/var/log/syslog')) { $syslogContent = shell_exec("cat $filename | grep -e '.*' $filename"); $contentArray = explode("\n", $syslogContent); rsort($contentArray); print_r($contentArray); } ajax.js (working properly) function createRequest() { var request = null; try { request = new XMLHttpRequest(); } catch (trymicrosoft) { try { request = new ActiveXObject("Msxml2.XMLHTTP"); } catch (othermicrosoft) { try { request = new ActiveXObject("Microsoft.XMLHTTP"); } catch (failed) { request = null; } } } if (request == null) { return alert("Error creating request object!"); } else { return request; } } var request = createRequest(); function getLog(timer) { var url = 'logtail.php'; request.open("GET", url, true); request.onreadystatechange = updatePage; request.send(null); startTail(timer); } function startTail(timer) { if (timer == "stop") { stopTail(); } else { t = setTimeout("getLog()",1000); } } function stopTail() { clearTimeout(t); var pause = "The log viewer has been paused. To begin viewing again, click the Start Log button.\n"; logDiv = document.getElementById("log"); var newNode = document.createTextNode(pause); logDiv.replaceChild(newNode,logDiv.childNodes[0]); } function updatePage() { if (request.readyState == 4) { if (request.status == 200) { var currentLogValue = request.responseText.split("\n"); eval(currentLogValue); logDiv = document.getElementById("log"); var logLine = ' '; for (i = 0; i < currentLogValue.length - 1; i++) { logLine += currentLogValue[i] + "<br/>\n"; } logDiv.innerHTML = logLine; } else alert("Error! Request status is " + request.status); } } index.php <script type="text/javascript" src="scripts/ajax.js"></script> <button style="margin-left:25px;" onclick="getLog('start');">Start Log</button> <button onclick="stopTail();">Stop Log</button> <form action="" method="get"> //This is where the filter options would be Date & Time (ex. Nov 03 07:24:57): <input type="text" name="dateTime" /> <input type="submit" value="submit" /> </form> <br> <div id="log" style="..."> //This is where the log contents are displayed </div>

  • Form submission info showing up in URL and not working

    - by kcurtin
    I am making a Rails 3.1 app and have a signup form that was working fine, but I seemed to have changed something to break it.. I'm using Twitter bootstrap and twitter_bootstrap_form_for gem. I made some change that messed with the formatting of the form fields, but more importantly, when I submit the Sign Up form to create a new User, the information is showing up in the URL and looks like this: EDIT: This is happening in the latest versions of Chrome and Firefox http://localhost:3000/?utf8=%E2%9C%93&authenticity_token=UaKG5Y8fuPul2Klx7e2LtdPLTRepBxDM3Zdy8S%2F52W4%3D&user%5Bemail%5D=kevinc%40example.com&user%5Bpassword%5D=testing&user%5Bpassword_confirmation%5D=testing&commit=Sign+Up Here is the code for the form: <div class="span7"> <h3 class="center" id="more">Sign Up Now!</h3> <%= twitter_bootstrap_form_for @user do |user| %> <%= user.email_field :email, :placeholder => '[email protected]' %> <%= user.password_field :password %> <%= user.password_field :password_confirmation, 'Confirm Password' %> <%= user.actions do %> <%= user.submit 'Sign Up' %> <% end %> <% end %> </div> Here is the code for the UsersController: class UsersController < ApplicationController def new @user = User.new end def create @user = User.new(params[:user]) if @user.save redirect_to about_path, :notice => "Signed up!" else render 'new' end end end Not sure if there is more you need but if so let me know! Thank you! Edit: For debugging I tried specifying :post and also using a plain form_for <%= form_for(@user, :method => :post) do |f| %> <div class="field"> <%= f.label :email %> <%= f.email_field :email %> </div> <div class="field"> <%= f.label :password %> <%= f.password_field :password %> </div> <div class="field"> <%= f.label :password_confirmation %> <%= f.password_field :password_confirmation %> </div> <div class="actions"><%= f.submit "Sign Up" %></div> <% end %> This gives me the same problem as above. Adding routes.rb: Auth31::Application.routes.draw do get "home" => "pages#home" get "about" => "pages#about" get "contact" => "pages#contact" get "help" => "pages#help" get "login" => "sessions#new", :as => "login" get "logout" => "sessions#destroy", :as => "logout" get "signup" => "users#new", :as => "signup" root :to => "pages#home" resources :pages resources :users resources :sessions resources :password_resets end

  • conditional selects with jQuery and the Validation plugin

    - by dbonomo
    Hi, I've got a form that I am validating with the jQuery validation plugin. I would like to add a conditional select box (a selection box that is populated/shown depending on the selection of another) and have it validate as well. Here is what I have so far: $(document).ready(function(){ $("#customer_information").validate({ //disable the submit button after it is clicked to prevent multiple submissions submitHandler: function(form){ if(!this.wasSent){ this.wasSent = true; $(':submit', form).val('Please wait...') .attr('disabled', 'disabled') .addClass('disabled'); form.submit(); } else { return false; } }, //Customizes error placement errorPlacement: function(error, element) { error.insertAfter(element) error.wrap("<div class=\"form_error\">") } }); $(".courses").hide(); $("#course_select").change(function() { switch($(this).val()){ case "Certificates": $(".courses").hide().parent().find("#Certificates").show(); $(".filler").hide(); break; case "Associates": $(".courses").hide().parent().find("#Associates").show(); $(".filler").hide(); break; case "": $(".filler").show(); $(".courses").hide(); } }); }); And the HTML: <select id="course_select"> <option value="">Please Select</option> <option value="Certificates">Certificates</option> <option value="Associates">Associates</option> </select> <div id="Form0" class="filler"><select name="filler_select"><option value="">Please Select Course Type</option></select></div> <div id="Associates" class="courses"> <select name="lead_source_id" id="Requested Program" class="required"> <option value="">Please Select</option> <option value="01">Health Information Technology</option> <option value="02">Human Resources </option> <option value="03">Marketing </option> </select> </div> <div id="Certificates" class="courses"> <select name="lead_source_id" id="Requested Program" class="required"> <option value="">Please Select</option> <option value="04">Accounting Services</option> <option value="05">Bookkeeping</option> <option value="06">Child Day Care</option> </select> </div> So far, the select is working for me, but validation thinks that the field is empty even when a value is selected. It looks like there are a ton of ways to do conditional selects in jQuery. This was the best way I managed to work out (I'm new to jQuery), but I'd love to hear what you folks feel is the "best" way, especially if it works well with the validation plugin. Thanks!

  • Adding to database. No repeat on refresh

    - by kevstarlive
    I have this code: Episode.php <?$feedback = new feedback; $articles = $feedback->fetch_all(); if (isset($_POST['name'], $_POST['post'])) { $cast = $_GET['id']; $name = $_POST['name']; $email = $_POST['email']; $post = nl2br ($_POST['post']); $ipaddress = $_SERVER['REMOTE_ADDR']; if (empty($name) or empty($post)) { $error = 'All Fields Are Required!'; }else{ $query = $pdo->prepare('INSERT INTO comments (cast, name, email, post, ipaddress) VALUES(?, ?, ?, ?, ?)'); $query->bindValue(1, $cast); $query->bindValue(2, $name); $query->bindValue(3, $email); $query->bindValue(4, $post); $query->bindValue(5, $ipaddress); $query->execute(); } }?> <div align="center"> <strong>Give us your feedback?</strong><br /><br /> <?php if (isset($error)) { ?> <small style="color:#aa0000;"><?php echo $error; ?></small><br /><br /> <?php } ?> <form action="episode.php?id=<?php echo $data['cast_id']; ?>" method="post" autocomplete="off" enctype="multipart/form-data"> <input type="text" name="name" placeholder="Name" /> / <input type="text" name="email" placeholder="Email" /><small style="color:#aa0000;">*</small><br /><br /> <textarea rows="10" cols="50" name="post" placeholder="Comment"></textarea><br /><br /> <input type="submit" onclick="myFunction()" value="Add Comment" /> <br /><br /> <small style="color:#aa0000;">* <b>Email will not be displayed publicly</b></small><br /> </form> </div> Include.php class feedback { public function fetch_all(){ global $pdo; $query = $pdo->prepare("SELECT * FROM comments"); $query->bindValue(1, $cast); $query->execute(); return $query->fetchAll(); } } This code updates to the database as it is suppose to. But after submission it reloads the current page as mentioned in the form action. But when I refresh the page to see the comment being added it asks to re submit. If I hit submit then the comment adds again. How can I stop this from happening? Maybe I could hide the comment box and display a thank you message but that would not stop a repeat entry. Please help. Thank you. Kev

  • How do I remove an element class after success?

    - by sharataka
    When the user clicks on a button in the form associated with it's image, I'd like the image to disappear on success. I'm having trouble implementing this. Any advice? <script type="text/javascript"> $(document).ready(function() { $(".removebutton").submit(function(event){ event.preventDefault(); $.ajax({ type:"POST", url:"/munch_video/", data: { 'video_id': $('.video_id', this).val(), // from form 'playlist': $('.playlist').val(), // from form 'add_remove': $('.add_remove').val(), // from form }, success: function(message){ alert(message); $('.span8').removeClass('.video_id', this); } }); return false; }); }); </script> <div class = "span8" style = "width: 900px;"> <!-- wrapper div --> <div class='wrapper huluDotCom'> <!-- image --> <div class="image" style="position: relative; left: 0; top: 0;"> <a href = "/partners/Business/huluDotCom"> <img src = "/huluDotCom.png"> </a> <!-- munchbutton div --> <div class='munchbutton'> <form method='post' action = '/munch_video/ ' class = 'removebutton'><div style='display:none'><input type='hidden' name='csrfmiddlewaretoken' value='dKrS8NzqPWFLM6u8wJrAeid4nGw1avGK' /></div> <input type="hidden" value="Channel" class = "playlist"/> <input type="hidden" value="huluDotCom" class = "video_id"/> <input type="hidden" value="remove_video" class = "add_remove"/> <input type='submit' class="btn btn-danger" value='Remove from plate'/> </form> </div> <!-- end munchbutton div --> </div> <!-- end image div --> </div> <!-- end wrapper div --> <!-- wrapper div --> <div class='wrapper TheEllenShow'> <!-- image --> <div class="image" style="position: relative; left: 0; top: 0;"> <a href = "/partners/Business/TheEllenShow"> <img src = "/TheEllenShow.png"> </a> <!-- munchbutton div --> <div class='munchbutton'> <form method='post' action = '/munch_video/ ' class = 'removebutton'><div style='display:none'><input type='hidden' name='csrfmiddlewaretoken' value='dKrS8NzqPWFLM6u8wJrAeid4nGw1avGK' /></div> <input type="hidden" value="Channel" class = "playlist"/> <input type="hidden" value="TheEllenShow" class = "video_id"/> <input type="hidden" value="remove_video" class = "add_remove"/> <input type='submit' class="btn btn-danger" value='Remove from plate'/> </form> </div> <!-- end munchbutton div --> </div> <!-- end image div --> </div> <!-- end wrapper div --> </div>

  • Persisting objects to a database using a loop

    - by ChaoticLoki
    I have a form that returns multiple values and each value I would like to store in a database, I created a test form for this purpose <form method="post" action="{{ path('submit_exercise', {'page': 1}) }}"> <input type="hidden" name="answers[]" value="Answer 1" "/> <input type="hidden" name="answers[]" value="Answer 2" "/> <input type="hidden" name="answers[]" value="Answer 3" "/> <input type="hidden" name="answers[]" value="Answer 4" "/> <input type="hidden" name="answers[]" value="Answer 5" "/> <input type="hidden" name="answers[]" value="Answer 6" "/> <input type="hidden" name="answers[]" value="Answer 7" "/> <input type="submit" name="submit" /> </form> </body> </html> My submit answers Action is currently written like so. public function submitAnswersAction($page) { //get submitted data $data = $this->get('request')->request->all(); $answers = $data['answers']; //get student ID $user = $this->get('security.context')->getToken()->getUser(); $studentID = $user->getId(); //Get Current time $currentTime = new \DateTime(date("Y-m-d H:m:s")); //var_dump($answers); //var_dump($studentID); //var_dump($currentTime); for($index = 0; $index < count($answers); $index++) { /*echo "Question ". ($index + 1) ."<br />"; echo "Student ID: ". $studentID."<br />"; echo "Page Number: $page <br />"; echo "Answer: $answers[$index]"."<br />"; echo "<br />";*/ $studentAnswer = new StudentAnswer(); $studentAnswer->setStudentID($studentID); $studentAnswer->setPageID($page); $studentAnswer->setQuestionID($index+1); $studentAnswer->setAnswer($answers[$index]); $studentAnswer->setDateCreated($currentTime); $studentAnswer->setReadStatus(0); $database = $this->getDoctrine()->getManager(); $database->persist($studentAnswer); $database->flush(); } return new Response('Answers saved for Student: '.$user->getFullName().' for page: '.$page); When I do a var_dump everything seems to be associated correctly, meaning that the answers array is populated with the right data and so is every other variable, my problem is actually persisting it to the database. when run it returns with this error which seems to me like it doesn't know what variables to put into the row. An exception occurred while executing 'INSERT INTO Student_Answer (student_id, page_id, question_id, answer, read, date_created) VALUES (?, ?, ?, ?, ?, ?)' with params {"1":2,"2":"1","3":1,"4":"Answer 1","5":0,"6":"2012-12-11 12:12:20"}: Any help would be greatly appreciated as this is a personal project to help me try and understand web development a bit more.

  • Image Preview in ASP.NET MVC

    - by imran_ku07
      Introduction :         Previewing an image is a great way to improve the UI of your site. Also it is always best to check the file type, size and see a preview before submitting the whole form. There are some ways to do this using simple JavaScript but not work in all browsers (like FF3).In this Article I will show you how do this using ASP.NET MVC application. You also see how this will work in case of nested form.   Description :          Create a new ASP.NET MVC project and then add a file upload and image control into your View. <form id="form1" method="post" action="NerdDinner/ImagePreview/AjaxSubmit">            <table>                <tr>                    <td>                        <input type="file" name="imageLoad1" id="imageLoad1"  onchange="ChangeImage(this,'#imgThumbnail')" />                    </td>                </tr>                <tr>                    <td align="center">                        <img src="images/TempImage.gif" id="imgThumbnail" height="200px" width="200px">                     </td>                </tr>            </table>        </form>           Note that here NerdDinner is refers to the virtual directory name, ImagePreview is the Controller and ImageLoad is the action name which you will see shortly          I will use the most popular jQuery form plug-in, that turns a form into an AJAX form with very little code. Therefore you must get these from Jquery site and then add these files into your page.          <script src="NerdDinner/Scripts/jquery-1.3.2.js" type="text/javascript"></script>        <script src="NerdDinner/Scripts/jquery.form.js" type="text/javascript"></script>            Then add the javascript function. <script type="text/javascript">function ChangeImage(fileId,imageId){ $("#form1").ajaxSubmit({success: function(responseText){ var d=new Date(); $(imageId)[0].src="NerdDinner/ImagePreview/ImageLoad?a="+d.getTime(); } });}</script>             This function simply submit the form named form1 asynchronously to ImagePreviewController's method AjaxSubmit and after successfully receiving the response, it will set the image src property to the action method ImageLoad. Here I am also adding querystring, preventing the browser to serve the cached image.           Now I will create a new Controller named ImagePreviewController. public class ImagePreviewController : Controller { [AcceptVerbs(HttpVerbs.Post)] public ActionResult AjaxSubmit(int? id) { Session["ContentLength"] = Request.Files[0].ContentLength; Session["ContentType"] = Request.Files[0].ContentType; byte[] b = new byte[Request.Files[0].ContentLength]; Request.Files[0].InputStream.Read(b, 0, Request.Files[0].ContentLength); Session["ContentStream"] = b; return Content( Request.Files[0].ContentType+";"+ Request.Files[0].ContentLength ); } public ActionResult ImageLoad(int? id) { byte[] b = (byte[])Session["ContentStream"]; int length = (int)Session["ContentLength"]; string type = (string)Session["ContentType"]; Response.Buffer = true; Response.Charset = ""; Response.Cache.SetCacheability(HttpCacheability.NoCache); Response.ContentType = type; Response.BinaryWrite(b); Response.Flush(); Session["ContentLength"] = null; Session["ContentType"] = null; Session["ContentStream"] = null; Response.End(); return Content(""); } }             The AjaxSubmit action method will save the image in Session and return content type and content length in response. ImageLoad action method will return the contents of image in response.Then clear these Sessions.           Just run your application and see the effect.   Checking Size and Content Type of File:          You may notice that AjaxSubmit action method is returning both content type and content length. You can check both properties before submitting your complete form.     $(myform).ajaxSubmit({success: function(responseText)            {                                var contentType=responseText.substring(0,responseText.indexOf(';'));                var contentLength=responseText.substring(responseText.indexOf(';')+1);                // Here you can do your validation                var d=new Date();                $(imageId)[0].src="http://weblogs.asp.net/MoneypingAPP/ImagePreview/ImageLoad?a="+d.getTime();            }        });  Handling Nested Form Case:          The above code will work if you have only one form. But this is not the case always.You may have a form control which wraps all the controls and you do not want to submit the whole form, just for getting a preview effect.           In this case you need to create a dynamic form control using JavaScript, and then add file upload control to this form and submit the form asynchronously  function ChangeImage(fileId,imageId)         {            var myform=document.createElement("form");                    myform.action="NerdDinner/ImagePreview/AjaxSubmit";            myform.enctype="multipart/form-data";            myform.method="post";            var imageLoad=document.getElementById(fileId).cloneNode(true);            myform.appendChild(imageLoad);            document.body.appendChild(myform);            $(myform).ajaxSubmit({success: function(responseText)                {                                    var contentType=responseText.substring(0,responseText.indexOf(';'));                    var contentLength=responseText.substring(responseText.indexOf(';')+1);                    var d=new Date();                    $(imageId)[0].src="http://weblogs.asp.net/MoneypingAPP/ImagePreview/ImageLoad?a="+d.getTime();                    document.body.removeChild(myform);                }            });        }            You also need append the child in order to send request and remove them after receiving response.

  • TOTD #166: Using NoSQL database in your Java EE 6 Applications on GlassFish - MongoDB for now!

    - by arungupta
    The Java EE 6 platform includes Java Persistence API to work with RDBMS. The JPA specification defines a comprehensive API that includes, but not restricted to, how a database table can be mapped to a POJO and vice versa, provides mechanisms how a PersistenceContext can be injected in a @Stateless bean and then be used for performing different operations on the database table and write typesafe queries. There are several well known advantages of RDBMS but the NoSQL movement has gained traction over past couple of years. The NoSQL databases are not intended to be a replacement for the mainstream RDBMS. As Philosophy of NoSQL explains, NoSQL database was designed for casual use where all the features typically provided by an RDBMS are not required. The name "NoSQL" is more of a category of databases that is more known for what it is not rather than what it is. The basic principles of NoSQL database are: No need to have a pre-defined schema and that makes them a schema-less database. Addition of new properties to existing objects is easy and does not require ALTER TABLE. The unstructured data gives flexibility to change the format of data any time without downtime or reduced service levels. Also there are no joins happening on the server because there is no structure and thus no relation between them. Scalability and performance is more important than the entire set of functionality typically provided by an RDBMS. This set of databases provide eventual consistency and/or transactions restricted to single items but more focus on CRUD. Not be restricted to SQL to access the information stored in the backing database. Designed to scale-out (horizontal) instead of scale-up (vertical). This is important knowing that databases, and everything else as well, is moving into the cloud. RBDMS can scale-out using sharding but requires complex management and not for the faint of heart. Unlike RBDMS which require a separate caching tier, most of the NoSQL databases comes with integrated caching. Designed for less management and simpler data models lead to lower administration as well. There are primarily three types of NoSQL databases: Key-Value stores (e.g. Cassandra and Riak) Document databases (MongoDB or CouchDB) Graph databases (Neo4J) You may think NoSQL is panacea but as I mentioned above they are not meant to replace the mainstream databases and here is why: RDBMS have been around for many years, very stable, and functionally rich. This is something CIOs and CTOs can bet their money on without much worry. There is a reason 98% of Fortune 100 companies run Oracle :-) NoSQL is cutting edge, brings excitement to developers, but enterprises are cautious about them. Commercial databases like Oracle are well supported by the backing enterprises in terms of providing support resources on a global scale. There is a full ecosystem built around these commercial databases providing training, performance tuning, architecture guidance, and everything else. NoSQL is fairly new and typically backed by a single company not able to meet the scale of these big enterprises. NoSQL databases are good for CRUDing operations but business intelligence is extremely important for enterprises to stay competitive. RDBMS provide extensive tooling to generate this data but that was not the original intention of NoSQL databases and is lacking in that area. Generating any meaningful information other than CRUDing require extensive programming. Not suited for complex transactions such as banking systems or other highly transactional applications requiring 2-phase commit. SQL cannot be used with NoSQL databases and writing simple queries can be involving. Enough talking, lets take a look at some code. This blog has published multiple blogs on how to access a RDBMS using JPA in a Java EE 6 application. This Tip Of The Day (TOTD) will show you can use MongoDB (a document-oriented database) with a typical 3-tier Java EE 6 application. Lets get started! The complete source code of this project can be downloaded here. Download MongoDB for your platform from here (1.8.2 as of this writing) and start the server as: arun@ArunUbuntu:~/tools/mongodb-linux-x86_64-1.8.2/bin$./mongod./mongod --help for help and startup optionsSun Jun 26 20:41:11 [initandlisten] MongoDB starting : pid=11210port=27017 dbpath=/data/db/ 64-bit Sun Jun 26 20:41:11 [initandlisten] db version v1.8.2, pdfile version4.5Sun Jun 26 20:41:11 [initandlisten] git version:433bbaa14aaba6860da15bd4de8edf600f56501bSun Jun 26 20:41:11 [initandlisten] build sys info: Linuxbs-linux64.10gen.cc 2.6.21.7-2.ec2.v1.2.fc8xen #1 SMP Fri Nov 2017:48:28 EST 2009 x86_64 BOOST_LIB_VERSION=1_41Sun Jun 26 20:41:11 [initandlisten] waiting for connections on port 27017Sun Jun 26 20:41:11 [websvr] web admin interface listening on port 28017 The default directory for the database is /data/db and needs to be created as: sudo mkdir -p /data/db/sudo chown `id -u` /data/db You can specify a different directory using "--dbpath" option. Refer to Quickstart for your specific platform. Using NetBeans, create a Java EE 6 project and make sure to enable CDI and add JavaServer Faces framework. Download MongoDB Java Driver (2.6.3 of this writing) and add it to the project library by selecting "Properties", "LIbraries", "Add Library...", creating a new library by specifying the location of the JAR file, and adding the library to the created project. Edit the generated "index.xhtml" such that it looks like: <h1>Add a new movie</h1><h:form> Name: <h:inputText value="#{movie.name}" size="20"/><br/> Year: <h:inputText value="#{movie.year}" size="6"/><br/> Language: <h:inputText value="#{movie.language}" size="20"/><br/> <h:commandButton actionListener="#{movieSessionBean.createMovie}" action="show" title="Add" value="submit"/></h:form> This page has a simple HTML form with three text boxes and a submit button. The text boxes take name, year, and language of a movie and the submit button invokes the "createMovie" method of "movieSessionBean" and then render "show.xhtml". Create "show.xhtml" ("New" -> "Other..." -> "Other" -> "XHTML File") such that it looks like: <head> <title><h1>List of movies</h1></title> </head> <body> <h:form> <h:dataTable value="#{movieSessionBean.movies}" var="m" > <h:column><f:facet name="header">Name</f:facet>#{m.name}</h:column> <h:column><f:facet name="header">Year</f:facet>#{m.year}</h:column> <h:column><f:facet name="header">Language</f:facet>#{m.language}</h:column> </h:dataTable> </h:form> This page shows the name, year, and language of all movies stored in the database so far. The list of movies is returned by "movieSessionBean.movies" property. Now create the "Movie" class such that it looks like: import com.mongodb.BasicDBObject;import com.mongodb.BasicDBObject;import com.mongodb.DBObject;import javax.enterprise.inject.Model;import javax.validation.constraints.Size;/** * @author arun */@Modelpublic class Movie { @Size(min=1, max=20) private String name; @Size(min=1, max=20) private String language; private int year; // getters and setters for "name", "year", "language" public BasicDBObject toDBObject() { BasicDBObject doc = new BasicDBObject(); doc.put("name", name); doc.put("year", year); doc.put("language", language); return doc; } public static Movie fromDBObject(DBObject doc) { Movie m = new Movie(); m.name = (String)doc.get("name"); m.year = (int)doc.get("year"); m.language = (String)doc.get("language"); return m; } @Override public String toString() { return name + ", " + year + ", " + language; }} Other than the usual boilerplate code, the key methods here are "toDBObject" and "fromDBObject".

These methods provide a conversion from "Movie" -> "DBObject" and vice versa. The "DBObject" is a MongoDB class that comes as part of the mongo-2.6.3.jar file and which we added to our project earlier.  The complete javadoc for 2.6.3 can be seen here. Notice, this class also uses Bean Validation constraints and will be honored by the JSF layer. Finally, create "MovieSessionBean" stateless EJB with all the business logic such that it looks like: package org.glassfish.samples;import com.mongodb.BasicDBObject;import com.mongodb.DB;import com.mongodb.DBCollection;import com.mongodb.DBCursor;import com.mongodb.DBObject;import com.mongodb.Mongo;import java.net.UnknownHostException;import java.util.ArrayList;import java.util.List;import javax.annotation.PostConstruct;import javax.ejb.Stateless;import javax.inject.Inject;import javax.inject.Named;/** * @author arun */@Stateless@Namedpublic class MovieSessionBean { @Inject Movie movie; DBCollection movieColl; @PostConstruct private void initDB() throws UnknownHostException { Mongo m = new Mongo(); DB db = m.getDB("movieDB"); movieColl = db.getCollection("movies"); if (movieColl == null) { movieColl = db.createCollection("movies", null); } } public void createMovie() { BasicDBObject doc = movie.toDBObject(); movieColl.insert(doc); } public List<Movie> getMovies() { List<Movie> movies = new ArrayList(); DBCursor cur = movieColl.find(); System.out.println("getMovies: Found " + cur.size() + " movie(s)"); for (DBObject dbo : cur.toArray()) { movies.add(Movie.fromDBObject(dbo)); } return movies; }} The database is initialized in @PostConstruct. • Making a Case For The Command Line

    - by Jesse Taber
    Originally posted on: http://geekswithblogs.net/GruffCode/archive/2013/06/30/making-a-case-for-the-command-line.aspxI have had an idea percolating in the back of my mind for over a year now that I’ve just recently started to implement. This idea relates to building out “internal tools” to ease the maintenance and on-going support of a software system. The system that I currently work on is (mostly) web-based, so we traditionally we have built these internal tools in the form of pages within the app that are only accessible by our developers and support personnel. These pages allow us to perform tasks within the system that, for one reason or another, we don’t want to let our end users perform (e.g. mass create/update/delete operations on data, flipping switches that turn paid modules of the system on or off, etc). When we try to build new tools like this we often struggle with the level of effort required to build them. Effort Required Creating a whole new page in an existing web application can be a fairly large undertaking. You need to create the page and ensure it will have a layout that is consistent with the other pages in the app. You need to decide what types of input controls need to go onto the page. You need to ensure that everything uses the same style as the rest of the site. You need to figure out what the text on the page should say. Then, when you figure out that you forgot about an input that should really be present you might have to go back and re-work the entire thing. Oh, and in addition to all of that, you still have to, you know, write the code that actually performs the task. Everything other than the code that performs the task at hand is just overhead. We don’t need a fancy date picker control in a nicely styled page for the vast majority of our internal tools. We don’t even really need a page, for that matter. We just need a way to issue a command to the application and have it, in turn, execute the code that we’ve written to accomplish a given task. All we really need is a simple console application! Plumbing Problems A former co-worker of mine, John Sonmez, always advocated the Unix philosophy for building internal tools: start with something that runs at the command line, and then build a UI on top of that if you need to. John’s idea has a lot of merit, and we tried building out some internal tools as simple Console applications. Unfortunately, this was often easier said that done. Doing a “File –> New Project” to build out a tool for a mature system can be pretty daunting because that new project is totally empty.  In our case, the web application code had a lot of of “plumbing” built in: it managed authentication and authorization, it handled database connection management for our multi-tenanted architecture, it managed all of the context that needs to follow a user around the application such as their timezone and regional/language settings. In addition, the configuration file for the web application  (a web.config in our case because this is an ASP .NET application) is large and would need to be reproduced into a similar configuration file for a Console application. While most of these problems are could be solved pretty easily with some refactoring of the codebase, building Console applications for internal tools still potentially suffers from one pretty big drawback: you’d have to execute them on a machine with network access to all of the needed resources. Obviously, our web servers can easily communicate the the database servers and can publish messages to our service bus, but the same is not true for all of our developer and support personnel workstations. We could have everyone run these tools remotely via RDP or SSH, but that’s a bit cumbersome and certainly a lot less convenient than having the tools built into the web application that is so easily accessible. Mix and Match So we need a way to build tools that are easily accessible via the web application but also don’t require the overhead of creating a user interface. This is where my idea comes into play: why not just build a command line interface into the web application? If it’s part of the web application we get all of the plumbing that comes along with that code, and we’re executing everything on the web servers which means we’ll have access to any external resources that we might need. Rather than having to incur the overhead of creating a brand new page for each tool that we want to build, we can create one new page that simply accepts a command in text form and executes it as a request on the web server. In this way, we can focus on writing the code to accomplish the task. If the tool ends up being heavily used, then (and only then) should we consider spending the time to build a better user experience around it. To be clear, I’m not trying to downplay the importance of building great user experiences into your system; we should all strive to provide the best UX possible to our end users. I’m only advocating this sort of bare-bones interface for internal consumption by the technical staff that builds and supports the software. This command line interface should be the “back end” to a highly polished and eye-pleasing public face. Implementation As I mentioned at the beginning of this post, this is an idea that I’ve had for awhile but have only recently started building out. I’ve outlined some general guidelines and design goals for this effort as follows: Text in, text out: In the interest of keeping things as simple as possible, I want this interface to be purely text-based. Users will submit commands as plain text, and the application will provide responses in plain text. Obviously this text will be “wrapped” within the context of HTTP requests and responses, but I don’t want to have to think about HTML or CSS when taking input from the user or displaying responses back to the user. Task-oriented code only: After building the initial “harness” for this interface, the only code that should need to be written to create a new internal tool should be code that is expressly needed to accomplish the task that the tool is intended to support. If we want to encourage and enable ourselves to build good tooling, we need to lower the barriers to entry as much as possible. Built-in documentation: One of the great things about most command line utilities is the ‘help’ switch that provides usage guidelines and details about the arguments that the utility accepts. Our web-based command line utility should allow us to build the documentation for these tools directly into the code of the tools themselves. I finally started trying to implement this idea when I heard about a fantastic open-source library called CLAP (Command Line Auto Parser) that lets me meet the guidelines outlined above. CLAP lets you define classes with public methods that can be easily invoked from the command line. Here’s a quick example of the code that would be needed to create a new tool to do something within your system: 1: public class CustomerTools 2: { 3: [Verb] 4: public void UpdateName(int customerId, string firstName, string lastName) 5: { 6: //invoke internal services/domain objects/hwatever to perform update 7: } 8: } This is just a regular class with a single public method (though you could have as many methods as you want). The method is decorated with the ‘Verb’ attribute that tells the CLAP library that it is a method that can be invoked from the command line. Here is how you would invoke that code: Parser.Run(args, new CustomerTools()); Note that ‘args’ is just a string[] that would normally be passed passed in from the static Main method of a Console application. Also, CLAP allows you to pass in multiple classes that define [Verb] methods so you can opt to organize the code that CLAP will invoke in any way that you like. You can invoke this code from a command line application like this: SomeExe UpdateName -customerId:123 -firstName:Jesse -lastName:Taber ‘SomeExe’ in this example just represents the name of .exe that is would be created from our Console application. CLAP then interprets the arguments passed in order to find the method that should be invoked and automatically parses out the parameters that need to be passed in. After a quick spike, I’ve found that invoking the ‘Parser’ class can be done from within the context of a web application just as easily as it can from within the ‘Main’ method entry point of a Console application. There are, however, a few sticking points that I’m working around: Splitting arguments into the ‘args’ array like the command line: When you invoke a standard .NET console application you get the arguments that were passed in by the user split into a handy array (this is the ‘args’ parameter referenced above). Generally speaking they get split by whitespace, but it’s also clever enough to handle things like ignoring whitespace in a phrase that is surrounded by quotes. We’ll need to re-create this logic within our web application so that we can give the ‘args’ value to CLAP just like a console application would. Providing a response to the user: If you were writing a console application, you might just use Console.WriteLine to provide responses to the user as to the progress and eventual outcome of the command. We can’t use Console.WriteLine within a web application, so I’ll need to find another way to provide feedback to the user. Preferably this approach would allow me to use the same handler classes from both a Console application and a web application, so some kind of strategy pattern will likely emerge from this effort. Submitting files: Often an internal tool needs to support doing some kind of operation in bulk, and the easiest way to submit the data needed to support the bulk operation is in a file. Getting the file uploaded and available to the CLAP handler classes will take a little bit of effort. Mimicking the console experience: This isn’t really a requirement so much as a “nice to have”. To start out, the command-line interface in the web application will probably be a single ‘textarea’ control with a button to submit the contents to a handler that will pass it along to CLAP to be parsed and run. I think it would be interesting to use some javascript and CSS trickery to change that page into something with more of a “shell” interface look and feel. I’ll be blogging more about this effort in the future and will include some code snippets (or maybe even a full blown example app) as I progress. I also think that I’ll probably end up either submitting some pull requests to the CLAP project or possibly forking/wrapping it into a more web-friendly package and open sourcing that.

  • InfoPath 2010 Form Design and Web Part Deployment

    - by JKenderdine
    In January I had the pleasure to speak at SharePoint Saturday Virginia Beach.  I presented a session on InfoPath 2010 forms design which included some of the basics of Forms Design, description of some of the new options with InfoPath 2010 and SharePoint 2010, and other integration possibilities.  Included below is the information presented as well as the solution to create the demo: First thing you need to understand is what the difference is between an InfoPath List form and a Form Library Form?  SharePoint List Forms:  Store data directly in a SharePoint list.  Each control (e.g. text box) in the form is bound to a column in the list. SharePoint list forms are directly connected to the list, which means that you don’t have to worry about setting up the publish and submit locations. You also do not have the option for back-end code. Form Library Forms:  Store data in XML files in a SharePoint form library.  This means they are more flexible and you can do more with them.  For example, they can be configured to save drafts and submit to different locations.
