• How reduce size of PPT 2010 Notes Pages PDFs?

  I have a PPT presentation of about 400 slides that I periodically update and publish as PDF. The view I publish is the Notes Pages. This worked fine for several years, during which time I was using PPT 2002. I recently upgraded to PPT 2010, and now I find that the PDFs I create are about 25 times bigger than they used to be, and the text in the slides part of the Notes Pages is no longer selectable in Acrobat. According to Why does Powerpoint 2010 print notes pages to PDF as raster images? , the problem is that PPT 2010 is rendering the slides' content as images, which is not what earlier versions of PPT did. The solution offered in that discussion involves Office Automation and VBA, neither of which I know anything about, and it's not clear whether that approach solves the problem of the text in the slides not being selectable in the PDF. Isn't there a simple way to get PPT 2010 to print Notes Pages to PDF the way it did in PPT 2002?

• firefox aliased/jagged fonts in xfce

  I've been using linux mint 7 for a couple of weeks now and I'm pretty happy with it, but I wanted to try out other desktops, e.g. KDE/Xfce I'm not sure if it's KDE's fault of Xfce's, but firefox's font rendering sucks now, it renders jagged/aliased fonts. I'm using xfce right now, My Xfce settings Manager > appearance > fonts settings roughly look like this: Default Font: Sans | 9 Rendring : [x] Enable anti-aliasing Hinting: None Sub-pixel Order: None But it's as if firefox ignores these settings!

• IIS FTP - Users Last Logon

  How would you determine the last FTP logon time/date for a bunch of local user accounts on a DMZ (standalone/workgroup) server running IIS FTP? I know I could use a log aggregator and sift through it that way, but this server has been operational for approximately 8 years and I don't fancy that vector. I have also tried the scripting route, but this is of no use because the users have never actually logged onto the machine, so there's no profile (rendering the WMI classes *WIN32_UserAccount* and *WIN32_UserProfile* useless). The configuration fo the client machine is below. HP Desktop Machine: Microsoft Windows XP Intel (R) Core2 Duo CPU E8400 @ 3.00 GHz 2.99 GHz, 1.94 GB of RAM Intel (R) Q45/Q43 Series Express Chipset (Inbuild) The CPU usage of the machine peaks 99% for 16 straems. After some discussion, we had decided to install external graphics card to reduce the CPU usage. So that, we have tried following graphics cards. NVIDIA Quadro NVS 440 - 128 MB Radeon HD 4350 - 512 MB GDDR2 Redeon HD 4350 - 1GB DDR2 ASUS EAH 4350 Silent 1GB DDR2 But the performance wise no difference, even worst. So, what is the pupuse of these external graphics cards? Really it will reduce the CPU usage? What parameters have to check, if we want to reduce the CPU usage? • Is there a program that compares image files and reports if they are exactly the same pixel-wise?

  I'm making a regression testing suite for some rendering software. I need to be able to load an image file (PNG or TGA, ideally) and compare the pixel values to a standard approved image. I'd like it to be command line driven too, so I can make a batch file to run all the tests. All the compare utilities I have found so far either show differences (I just need it to fail if they are different) or compare all the bytes, meaning that meta-data will trigger a fail. Anyone got any suggestions? I am not a coder, and can only barely cobble a batch script together. Thanks for any suggestions.

  Background: My fiancée needs a Mac Pro for movie editing and rendering. I need a web server and a backup solution for my MacBook Pro. Idea We thought we could split the costs of the Mac Pro and set it up to act as both a web server and a backup device. Question Is this a good idea? Specifically: Is it easy to set it up to incrementally backup one or several laptops over wifi? And what software would you recommend? Is it silent and stable enough to run a web server continuously? • Why do all my browsers default to the "Impact" font?

  I've been struggling with a font issue which I hope you can help resolve. A few weeks ago I started seeing "Impact" as the default font on lots of webpages, rendering much of the content illegible. I think this issue began after I installed other fonts, but I'm not sure. The issue occurs on Chrome, IE and Firefox which suggests it is a Windows issue. By the time I tried to revert the changes via System Restore, it was too late. I tried to reset the default font but Windows does not seem to respond to that. When I click "Restore to default font settings" the button greys out but nothing else happens. No dialog box and no change in the issue. I've tried deleting the fonts in my font folder and re-installing them (from backup) but that did not work either. • Advice for migrating email server

  Hi there, I'm planning to migrate a Zimbra server with about 200gb of data from a server hosted in an office into a datacentre, to increase uptime (we've had a couple of outages when our network here started flaking out, and we have people in other countries relying on this server too). However, I'm not sure how best to migrate the data into the data centre without rendering the connection unusable during office hours, because there's far too much to send in over night over the two meg upstream connection we have here. I'm familiar with using tools like nice to stop a long running process degrading machine performance - is there a simple way to throttle a connection between office hours, so the long running transfer doesn't block the pipe, but then opens up outside of office hours to make the most of the bandwidth? I'm aware the alternative here is to simply mail a hard drive to the data centre, but I'd like to avoid doing that if I could. We're using Centos Linux for our servers, in the office and the datacentre, so extra points for an open source linux answer.

• SQL Query fields change to uppercase on upload to server.

  Hi There, I have just finished developing an app using CodeIgniter. When I upload it to my Host (Hostgator shared) some of the SQL text is converted to uppercase and rendering the app unusable. In my database I have two tables client and transaction. When I upload the App to the server client and transaction is replaced with all caps. Obviously this is bad as MySQL queries are case sensitive. At first I was uploading with FTP and thought FTP was to blame. I then zipped up the app and uploaded the archive, unpacking it on the server shell. Still no joy. Any ideas on how to fix this? At the moment I just have to go into the server and edit my queries back to lowercase.. Cheers in advance for any ideas.. --Conor

However, I heard about ANGLE and that some versions of Chrome support it. So I installed Chrome 11, canary build. Does that support ANGLE? Do I somehow need to activate it? Because, all WebGL pages that I tried with canary build say something like: "Failed to initialize WebGL"

• Background process text appears in terminal vim

  First time poster, long time lurker, searched, couldn’t find etc, etc. I’m running vim in tmux, in iTerm2. I’m running a server with Grunt.js, which I have running in the background, out of my way. I start my grunt server in the background like this: grunt server & Grunt also watches a bunch of files, and runs some tasks when any of the watched files have been written to. The problem is, when I am in vim and I write a file, the output from grunt starts rendering in vim! I’ve tried running a ‘stock’ vim by starting with this: vim -u NONE …But the problem remains. This suggests to me that the problem is not with my .vimrc. Perhaps it’s an issue with iTerm2, I don’t know. Help.

• How do I change the default browser in lotus notes when opening links in emails?

  I can't seem to figure out how to change the default browser for email/sametime links from opening with lotus notes to say chrome/firefox/ie. All links open with a new tab in lotus notes, which always gives scripting errors as it appears to be using ie as it's rendering engine to open up webpages. Is there something in the preferences that I'm missing that I'm not seeing? I've hunted around for awhile and am not seeing an option to change it. I've also tried to change it within the internet options for default applications, but nothing's working. I'm using lotus notes 8 on windows xp if that helps anyone helping me.

• Font size of emacs in ubuntu

  I use emacs in ubuntu and I use Monaco 10 as its default font. However, the font rendering seems a bit odd compared to my gnome terminal with the same font size: It's a bit smaller and not as clear as that in the terminal. I've tried to avoid simply this with size 11 but it's too large for me. How can I make it the same as its look in the terminal ? Any help is appreciated :) UPDATE: I should tell you the above on is GUI emacs running a shell, and the below is the gnome terminal. On the right are their correspond font settings. • Serious voltage and temperature problems

  My computer has been acting up when I play games so I wanted to look into why. Issue 1: GPU Temp According to afterburner and speedfan my 8800GTX idles at 90 degrees and then when playing games shoots up to over 110C which is when my graphics basically starts to give rendering issues. Issue 2: CPU Temp Speedfan is saying my CPU temp is 83C idle but when I look at core temp it says core0 is at 35C and core1 is at 33C. Issue 3: Voltages This is what speedfan is saying for my voltages: Vcore1: 1.01V Vcore2: 1.90V +3.3V: 3.31V +5V: 4.95V +12V: 0.51V -12V: -16.80V -5V: -8.43V +5V 5.13V Vbat: 3.25V Vcore: 3.00V +3.3V: 3.20V These voltages, for lack of a better word, look f*cked. With all this happening, the computer runs ok under normal use. Is the software giving out incorrect readouts or instead should I immediately move the computer into another room before it explodes? P.s I would like to add this is a stock system. EVGA 8800GTX, E6850 CPU, 800W PSU

• What happens when you add a Graphics card to a i7 with build in graphics (e.g. HD 4000)

  I'm thinking of upgrading my computer from an AMD Phenom II X4 955BE with a AMD Radeon HD 6800 Graphics card (not integrated) to using a Intel Core i7 3770. As I have no knowledge of integrated graphics, my question is, what happens to the computing power when not using the HD4000 integrated graphics of the CPU (does it mean the CPU will run faster then it would if I relied on it?) Also what is better the CPUs inbuilt HD4000 or my Radeon Graphics card? I am mostly interested in terms of content creation: Using Adobe After Effects, 3D Rendering etc. Not too bothered about gaming performance. I will be using the spare parts of this build and older systems to make a second computer for network renders so what will be the advantages of keeping the Radeon with the current system for that?

• Why are applications slowing down on the computer's second monitor?

  Here's an interesting one. Problem I have a user on Windows XP who is running a web application inside IE8. She has two monitors plugged in via DVI cables. When she is working the the browser on her primary monitor, everything is fine, but when she drags the window over to the second monitor, the web applications functionality grinds to a halt. It's not just web apps either - many applications exhibit the problem. What I've tried Switching the two monitors in the OS. It's obviously not the monitor's fault. Confirmed that it's the app slowing down, and not the graphical rendering. The application in question actually locks up. The mouse is unaffected, and I can drag other windows on top of the problematic application. Any ideas?

• How to make fonts smooth and readable in Debian/Ubuntu?

  What is the best, most foolproof way of getting nice font rendering in Linux? Currently, I am experiencing thin, ugly fonts (shown below). I have wasted too much time tweaking fonts.conf, and I have yet to find a decent combination. I am running Debian 6.0 with no desktop environment (just Openbox for a window manager) in a VM on a Macbook Pro (OS X 10.7.4). • Macbook Pro (SantaRosa) internal display not detected by graphics card, external monitor OK

  My MacBook Pro (2.4 Ghz, Santa Rosa with infamous nVidia card) acts strange. It shows the normal gray screen with Apple logo and animation flawlessly during start up but the internal display goes black without any rendering at all when all is loaded. (shining a light on display show nothing) If an external monitor is connected through the DVI port it will remain black during start up and then show the desktop as the internal display goes black. This happens both while booting to Mountain Lion and Windows XP. I have checked "About my Mac" and only the external display is listed. The same is the case if I use the nVidia Control panel in Windows XP. My questions: Is this a hardware problem or is it related to software maybe even firmware? What controls the display during start up, graphics card or something else?

• Is is possible to hide label colors in list view in Mac OS 10.X Finder? I use labels as star ratings

  I have modified the first five label names in OS X Lion to be ? through ?????. This way I can easily tag photos etc. in the finder. However, I find that Apple's rendering of the colored bars is horrendously ugly. I'd like to keep the labels (to be able to sort by label) but not see the colors. I know it was possible to change the colors with Label X, but Unsanity has not issued an update for Lion. I don't need to change the colors, just find a way to hide them in the finder.

• Video problem with Windows 7 Games

  I have a Dell xps M1330 which originally ran Vista, but I upgraded to Windows 7. When I try to run a Win 7 game like spider solitaire I receive the following message: "The game is running in software rendering mode. Hardware acceleration is either disabled or not supported by your video card driver which could slow down game performance. Make sure you have the latest video card driver installed and that hardware acceleration is turned on." I confirmed that hardware acceleration is turned on. When I go to Dell's site, I'm told there is no later video driver. When I run the game it runs very choppy. I wouldn't care, but I loaded a .pptx file which is doing strange things in normal view and I suspect may be related to the same video problem. Any ideas?
