  I had an e-commerce website hosted on http://mydomain.com/beta for more than a year, eventually I decided to move the website to root http://mydomain.com I had done quite a lot of link postings to forums etc, when my site used to be hosted in the sub-dir /beta . Is there any way to do a mod_rewrite by which all the old links that I have posted do not return as broken links since now longer the site is hosted in /beta and is now hosted on the site root. I did read that mod_rewrite can help resolve this issue, but also read about that this has to be done with care. Just a tip that this site is using Friendl URL.

• 20 to 40 seconds pause during the boot on 12.04

  I've just installed new ASRock B75M-ITX Mainboard and fresh Ubuntu 12.04 on it. During the boot, there is a 20 to 40 seconds pause when goa-daemon is starting (/var/log/syslog): Jul 7 11:13:28 sirius goa[1933]: goa-daemon version 3.4.0 starting [main.c:112, main()] Jul 7 11:13:51 sirius kernel: [ 102.771893] ata3.00: exception Emask 0x0 SAct 0x0 SErr 0x0 action 0x6 frozen Any ideas what is wrong and how should I proceed trouble-shooting this? EDIT: Thank you for the tip regarding ATA. I've found following in the logs: Jul 8 10:54:20 sirius kernel: [ 6.007532] ata1: link is slow to respond, please be patient (ready=0) Jul 8 10:54:20 sirius kernel: [ 10.648618] ata1: COMRESET failed (errno=-16) The problem vanished when I've reconnected the Intel G1 SSD from SATA3 to SATA2 connector.

• Spotlight on GlassFish 4.1: #6 Java API for WebSocket 1.1

  'Spotlight on GlassFish 4.1' is a series of posts that highlights specific enhancements of the upcoming GlassFish 4.1 release. It could be a new feature, a fix, a behavior change, a tip, etc. #6 Java API for WebSocket 1.1 JSR 356 (Java API for WebSocket) has recently passed the Maintenance Release ballot, this Maintenance Release fixes an important issue when Java SE 8 Lambdas are used (see here). GlassFish 4.1 will include an updated version of Tyrus (JSR 356 Reference Implementation) to bring the WebSocket API level to the latest version of the specification, i.e. WebSocket API for Java 1.1. It should be mentioned that the Tyrus version included in GlassFish 4.1 also brings additional features. • Max Brightness in ubuntu lower when compared to windows

  I've installed Ubuntu 14.04 on my (new) ThinkPad Edge330. Everything worked quite well so far. I've noticed that the screen wasn't that bright and was a bit disappointed of the ThinkPad, but then I realized that the brightness was much better on a parallel windows 7 installation I did later on. I already used this tip: Max brightness on NetBook I did increase the brightness to an acceptable level (could be the actual max. brightness, or is there a way to increase it even further?) But now unfortunately I cannot change the screen brightness at all anymore. Not by using the FN keys or in the system settings.

  My Oracle Support 6.3 was released over the weekend (13-Oct-2012), and with that we released 30+ enhancements and 60+ bug fixes. Most important changes Search Suggestions are auto-correcting spelling errors, more suggestions for 'how to' type questions, enhanced usability to see the suggested additional terms. Improved Knowledge Base region on the My Oracle Support dashboard: recent searches from this region now retain the search attributions (e.g. pre-selected products or release). Search Tip: if the Knowledge Base region doesn't show up as the first region in the right column on the My Oracle Support dashboard, consider personalizing your dashboard to put it first, so that you right there for searching. • SSRS 2008 R2 KPIs with bullet graphs

  Key Performance Indicators are typically displayed in a scorecard with stop light indicators, which are either red, amber or green light icons. The limitation for these kind of indicators is that you can see the actual and target values in two different fields as well as see the status of the KPI in red, amber or green color. If the user wants to figure out the thresholds associated with the KPI, these values are generally not visible. Further, representing the threshold values in the scorecard itself defeats the purpose of the scorecard. The scorecard should display the KPI's status in the most summarized form and use a minimal amount of space on the dashboard. In this tip we would look at how to address this issue.

• Windows: starting sqlplus in new window from cygwin bash

  When I start sqlplus, more often than not, I want it to start in new window,whether it be on Linux/Solaris GNOME or Windows.I seldom use GNOME so I never bothered to figure out how.On Windows, one can use Windows menu or Win+R "Run" dialog but I prefer usingbash. Because, this way, I can keep the history in ~/.bash_history file.There are 2 ways. Using cmd.exe or cygstart.For example, to start default sqlplus.exe to connect to default local instance. $ cmd /c "start sqlplus sys/oracle as sysdba" 2nd example. To start sqlplus in 2nd Oracle home and to connect to non-default local instance. $ ORACLE_SID=orcl cygstart /cygdrive/g/app/product/11.2.0.3/dbhome_1/BIN/sqlplus scott I hope this tip helps reducing your DBA time.

  hi, I want to automatize the backup of my databases and files with cron. Should I add the following lines to crontab ? mysqldump -u root -pPASSWORD database_name | gzip > /home/backup/database_`date +\%m-\%d-\%Y`.sql.gz svn commit -m "Committing the working copy containing the database dump" 1) First of all, is this a good approach? 2) It is not clear how to specify the repository and the working copy with svn. 3) How can I run svn only when the mysqldump is done and not before ? I am working on customizing how my results appear in Google as best as possible. I have learned about the meta tags to customize the text summary. However, I have some hierarchical parts to my website. When a result appears related to the "tip-of-the-iceberg", I would like to show links related to the "child" pages. • Tips or techniques to use when you don't know how to code something?

  I have a background as UI designer. And I realized that it is a bit hard for me to write a pieces of logic. Sometimes I get it right, but most of the time, I end up with something hacky (and it usually takes a lot of time). And is not that I don't like programming, in fact, I'm starting to like it as much as design. It's just that sometimes I think that I'm better at dealing with colors an shapes, rather than numbers and logic (but I want to change that). What I usually do is to search the solution on the Internet, copy the example, and insert it into my app (I know this is not a very good practice). I've heard that one tip was to write the logic in common English as comment before writing the actual code. What other tips and techniques I can use?

  Quite a long ago I wrote about a SQL Server programming tip on how to extract date part from a DATETIME column. The post discusses about using of T SQL function convert() to get date part. One of the readers of the post, tipped me about a better way of extracting date part and here is the SQL query he sent to us SELECT DateAdd(day, DateDiff(day, 0, getdate()), 0); In clean way this query trims off time part from the DATETIME value. I rate this solution better than the one I wrote long ago as this one does not depend on any string operations. According the commenter, this method is faster compared to the other. What do you say? • How to set up Google Chrome as default browser in Xubuntu

  I use Xubuntu 12.04. I uninstalled Firefox and now use Google Chrome version 19.xxx. To solve this problem, I tried: galternatives the "default apps" under settings and sudo update-alternatives --config x-www-browser Neither of these worked. Does anybody have an alternative solution for this? -- Solution: I used the "sudo gedit /usr/share/applications/defaults.list" tip from ??? and searched for firefox in the whole document! Everytime I found "firefox" I replaced it with "google-chrome.desktop". I also used the "default apps" menu to change it to google-chrome. And now it works.. I hope it helps some other ;-)

  Does anybody know a good website where to find free models and animations for AI projects? I'm not talking about anything good looking, like stuff you would look for when building a proper game, but, for example, a bunch of male/female models that are able to walk around and that would substitute my ugly "capsules", just to give a better -yet, still rough - idea of what's going on in the scene. On the Unity Asset Store there are a bunch of nice male/female models, but i haven't found any free general-purpose(i.e. normal walking) animation attachable to them. • How do I recover when Compiz crashes?
