• Hyper-V Manager version 6.2, an experience in virtual switch setup

  The version number of Hyper-V manager is 6.2.9200.16384   This is what came with my Windows 8 work laptop (by enabling Windows features) The blogs I read indicated that I need an external switch for my guest OS to access internet, and an internal one for them to share folder with my Host OS.  I proceeded to create an external virtual switch, and here is the screenshot. After setting up the network adapters on the guest OS, I peeked into host OS networking, and saw that Network Bridge was already created.  GREAT!  So I fired up my guest OS and darn, no internet.  Then I noticed that my host internet was gone, too.  I looked further and found that even though I have a network bridge, no connection has the status "Bridged"Once I removed the bridge (by removing individual connection from the bridge, I know, weird, since none of them say "Bridged" in status)  I re-selected the connection that I want and add them to the bridge to create a new network bridge.  Once my wireless connection status shows "Bridged", I was able to get to internet from my guest OS.Two things I noticed after I got internet for everyone ( my host and guest OS):My network adapters in the host OS no longer shows "Bridged", but everyone can still get to the internetThe virtual switch that I set up for "External" is now showing to be "Internal", and I was able to create shared folder between host and guest OS.  This means I didn't have to create the other "Internal" virtual switch.

• Ubuntu 12.04 Network Manager: unable to save manual setting to set up a static ip

  I am fairly familiar with setting up servers, and ubuntu is generally my flavor of choice, but I just installed 12.04 desktop and I am seeing some behavior in network manager that is really puzzling. The network connection works fine if I leave it set on dhcp, but I would like a static IP address for my new web server. When I go into network manager and edit the connection for the one and only NIC I can select MANUAL from the dropdown menu but as soon as I do the Save button becomes greyed out. Even after filling out all fields for the connection it is still grey and I am unable to save the static IP connection information. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. I'm hoping there is just some new setting that I am unaware of.... On another note, if I stop the network manager and go edit the interfaces file (and the appropriate hosts/routes/dns files), I do get a static ip address assigned and I can contact my server from the outside, however, the server cannot find the internet. Can't ping even its own ip... I can ping the loopback interface though. I'm really confused on this one. Hoping someone can offer some help.

• Software Manager who makes developers do Project Management

  I'm a software developer working in an embedded systems company. We have a Project Manager, who takes care of the overall project schedule (including electrical, quality, software and manufacturing) hence his software schedule is very brief. We also have a Software Manager, who's my boss. He makes me write and maintain the software schedule, design documents (high and low level design), SRS, change management, verification plans and reports, release management, reviews, and ofcourse the software. We only have one Test Engineer for the whole software team (10 members), and at any given time, there are a couple of projects going on. I'm spending 80% of my time making these documents. My boss comes from a Process background, and believes what we need is better documentation to improve software: (1) He considers the design to be paramount, coding is "just writing the design down", it shouldn't take too long, and "all the code should be written before the hardware is ready". (2) Doesn't understand the difference between a Central & Distributed Version control, even after we told him its easier to collaborate with a distributed model. (3) Doesn't understand code, and wants to understand every bug and its proposed solution. (4) Believes verification should be done by developer, and validation by the Tester. Thing is though, our verification only checks if implementation is correct (we don't write unit tests, its never considered in the schedule), and validation is black box testing, so the units tests are missing. I'm really confused. (1) Am I responsible for maintaining all these documents? It makes me feel like I'm doing the Software Project Management, in essence. (2) I don't really like creating documents, I want to solve problems and write code. In my experience, creating design documents only helps to an extent, its never the solution to better or faster code. (3) I feel the boss doesn't really care about making better products, but only about being a good manager in the eyes of the management. What can I do?

• Community TFS Build Manager available for Visual Studio 2012 RC

  I finally got around to push out a version of the Community TFS Build Manager that is compatible with Visual Studio 2012 RC. Unfortunately I had to do this as a separate extension, it references different versions of the TFS assemblies and also some properties and methods that the 2010 version uses are now obsolete in the TFS 2012 API. To download it, just open the Extension Manager, select Online and search for TFS Build:   You can also download it from this link: http://visualstudiogallery.msdn.microsoft.com/cfdb84b4-285e-4eeb-9fa9-dad9bfe2cd10 The functionality is identical to the 2010 version, the only difference is that you can’t start it from the Team Explorer Builds node (since the TE has been completely rewritten and the extension API’s are not yet published). So, to start it you must use the Tools menu: We will continue shipping updates to both versions in the future, as long as it functionality that is compatible with both TFS 2010 and TFS 2012. You might also note that the color scheme used for the build manager doesn’t look as good with the VS2012 theme….   Hope you will enjoy the tool in Visual Studio 2012 as well. • Hyper-V virtual machine can't be migrated to a specific host in the cluster

  I have a three-node Hyper-V cluster running on Windows Server 2008 R2 which is working quite flawlessly: there are no errors, live migration works, all hosts can and will happily run all virtual machines, and so on. But one specific virtual machinee is trying to make me go mad: it works on two nodes of the cluster, but not on the third one. Whenever I try to move the VM to that node, be it in a live migration or with the VM powered off, it always fails. In the event log of the host these events are logged: Source: Hyper-V-VMMS Event ID: 16300 Cannot load a virtual machine configuration: General access denied error (0x80070005) (Virtual machine ID <GUID>) Source: Hyper-V-VMMS Evend ID: 20100 The Virtual Machine Management Service failed to register the configuration for the virtual machine '<GUID>' at 'C:\ClusterStorage\<PATH>\<VM>': General access denied error (0x80070005) Source: Hyper-V-High-Availability Event ID: 21102 'Virtual Machine Configuration <VM>' failed to register the virtual machine with the virtual machine management service. All other VMs can be moved to/from the offending host, and the offending VM can be moved between the other two hosts. Also, this is not a storage problem, because there are other VMs in the same cluster volume, and the host has no troubles running them. What's going on here?

• Wicked VNC Viewer acting out on Windows desktop and CentOS 6.3 server

  What we have here is the only way to open the TightVNC viewer on this Windows XP desktop is to have a TigerVNC viewer open on the CentOS 6.3 server desktop. I know it sounds really weird and we’re looking for hints to make it go away. Any ideas? Here is the recipe: We are using Putty on the Windows desktop as SSH (Secure Shell) and a Terminal Emulator. We open and login to Putty then open a login to TightVNC viewer. After many failed attempts, much Googling, and lots of reading to no avail I decided to open the TigerVNC viewer on the CentOS 6.3 server by way of the GNOME desktop Application menu -- Internet tab. After opening and logging into the TigerVNC viewer on the CentOS 6.3 Server, Voila!! We have a remote desktop opened on the server. But what was an interesting discovery was that the TigerVNC viewer on the server had a request on the desktop that was not on the server desktop. This turned out to be a login request that once the password was entered it opened the TightVNC viewer on the Windows desktop. Weird huh? -Why is that password request showing up on the CentOS 6.3 server in the TigerVNC viewer as oppose to showing up on the Windows desktop when logging in using TightVNC viewer to the server?

• ASP.NET Performance tip- Combine multiple script file into one request with script manager

  We all need java script for our web application and we storing our JavaScript code in .js files. Now If we have more then .js file then our browser will create a new request for each .js file. Which is a little overhead in terms of performance. If you have very big enterprise application you will have so much over head for this. Asp.net Script Manager provides a feature to combine multiple JavaScript into one request but you must remember that this feature will be available only with .NET Framework 3.5 sp1 or higher versions.  Let’s take a simple example. • How to connect through a proxy using Remote Desktop?

  So I've got a home server running Windows Server 2003. I use a dual network card setup and Routing and Remote Access to link the internal, private network to the external connection. The external connection hooks directly to my cable modem (so no routers or other devices sitting between). The problem I'm having is that I can't connect remotely from a location outside the house (so connecting to the server's external connection) to the server using either Remote Desktop or VNC. I have enabled both ports in Routing and Remote Access's firewall to allow access, and I have enabled Remote Desktop in Windows Server 2003. The odd thing is that I can access my home server's SVN repository and I can even ping the server's IP. I am using the IP to attempt to connect, though I use a dyndns.com provided name to connect to my SVN repository, so it shouldn't make a difference (I know the IP is getting resolved correctly). Any ideas on where to start diagnosing this one? I haven't seen anything in my server's event log. If any other info is needed, let me know. Thanks. UPDATE: One last piece of information: We use a proxy server at work, which I'm nearly 100% sure is the culprit. I have a workaround--if I connect to our VPN (even though I'm already inside the building) I am able to connect to my home server. This is with VNC. However, is there a way to connect through a proxy using Remote Desktop? ONE MORE UPDATE: Indeed, it was the http proxy I'm sitting behind at work that was causing the issue. An acceptable workaround is to use my VPN connection to bypass the proxy, and I'm in!

• Remotely port forward/launch process or a client-less remote desktop app?

  I have an XP box running Logmein at a remote location behind a linksys router, which was running well for a whole of four days, until we had a power failure. Our ISP gave us a new IP, the machine restarted, and logmein did not autorun (or, at least, it did not automatically sign in), and our service (which may or may not be a Minecraft server with non-backed-up save files) also did not run upon startup. Logmein does not register the new IP (it still displays the old one). I have a DDNS updater service, so I do know the new dynamic address. I have tried using the built in XP remote desktop service, but, as with almost all non-cloud-based remote desktop services, it requires a port forward. Thus, I would appreciate it if anyone has any ideas as to: A: Any way of accessing our router remotely to forward the remote desktop port. I've seen the Remote Management option (forwarding the setup page to port 8080), but I do not have it enabled. I've tried UPnP, but again, the setup page for our router is not forwarded. B: Any way of remotely launching a process that does not require port forwarding (or uses ports 255XX, 18XXX, or 9000.), such as a remote console service built into XP. I realize this is a near impossibility. C: A Way to remotely start logmein, and sign in, which is likely a definite impossibility. Sorry if this is too specific for Stackexchange, or if I've put it into the wrong section (is SuperUser the correct place for this?). Ideas would, again be much appreciated, as shot-in-the-dark-like this may be.

• Stop UAC/Secure Desktop from dimming the screen

  I like the concepts of UAC and the "Secure Desktop" in Windows 7, but I don't like the dimming of the Secure Desktop to prompt for Admin credentials (or OK button to get clicked). However, dimming goes so far that my monitor regularly goes into PowerSaver mode, which is annoying (as it takes another 10 seconds for it to wake up), and might harm the monitor: two weeks after switching from XP to Windows 7, my 30" monitor stayed black and it had to get replaced. The web is full of tips how to turn off dimming, but that will always also turn off the "Secure Desktop". Is there a way to present the Secure Desktop without dimming? Or with a different visual effect to show that it is the Secure Desktop? EDIT: To clarify, I'm not looking for a way to disable dimming by disabling Secure Desktop (as is done by lowering the UAC level). I want to keep both UAC and Secure Desktop.

• One bigger Virtual Machine distributed across many Nodes [on hold]

  I just setup virtual machines on one hardware with Vagrant (this is just a test environment, not production!). I want to use a Puppet to configure them and next try to setup OpenStack. I am not sure If I am understanding how this should look at the end. Can I run one Virtual Machine across many Nodes with OpenStack? Is it possible to aggregate the computation power of separate machines in one virtual distributed operating system?

• Converted VmWare Image does not boot in Virtual Box

  I have a .vddx virtual image which boots in VmWare, but I'm having trouble getting it to work with Sun Virtual Box. In Sun Virtual Box, I created a new Virtual Machine and pointed it at the vddx file from VmWare. When I try to boot the virtual machine, Sun Virtual Box says that the volume is not bootable. VmWare is able to boot from this virtual machine. Does anyone have any suggestions about what might be causing the problem? Is there a conversion utility that I need to run? Any debugging options that I could turn on?

Bármelyik megoldást is választjuk (ezek elonyeivel és hátrányaival most nem foglalkozok), az egyik legfontosabb megoldandó probléma, hogy biztonsággal el tudjuk oket szeparálni akár adatbiztonsági, akár eroforrás kezelési szempontból. A szoftveres és hardveres virtualizációk lehetové teszik, hogy a szerver eroforrásait több virtuális szerver között felosszuk, ezáltal elszeparálhatók a párhuzamosan futó adatbázis példányok. Ezek a megoldások általában költségesek, plusz adminisztrációt jelentenek és teljesítmény csökkenést okoznak. Az alábbiakban röviden összeszedem, hogy az Oracle Database milyen eroforrás szeparációs technológiákkal rendelkezik, melyek jól használhatók adatbázis konszolidáció esetén: Adatbázis szolgáltatások: Azt talán minden Oracle adatbázis-kezelovel foglalkozó szakérto tudja, hogy akliensek az adatbázist az adatbázis szolgáltatás nevével érik el. Alapértelmezetten minden adatbázis egyetlen szolgáltatással rendelkezik, mely automatikusan a 'global database name' paraméterrel megegyezo nevet kapja az adatbázis létrehozásakor. Ugyanakkor egy adatbázishoz több szolgáltatás név is rendelheto. A szolgáltatásokkal csoportosíthatók a különbözo feladatokat végrehajtó kliensek, és a szolgáltatásokhoz rendelhetjük hogy melyik kliens csoportnak mennyi rendszer eroforrást allokálunk. Klaszteres adatbázisok (RAC) esetén egy szolgáltatás több adatbázis példányhoz (szerverhez) kapcsolódhat, amivel valós terheléstol függo terhelés elosztás valósítható meg (itt már szerepet kap egyébként a Resource Manager is, lásd késobb). Az alkalmazás számára irrelevánssá válik, hogy az adott szolgáltatást mely szerver szolgálja ki. A szolgáltatásokhoz kapcsolódó eroforrások menet közben dinamikusan bovíthetok, de kezelik a kieso eroforrások hiányát is (failover). Database Resource Manager: Az Oracle Database Resource Manager az adatbázis szintjén kezeli az eroforrásokat, a CPU használatot szabályozza az adatbázis terhelés kontrolljával. A Resource Manager egy CPU-n adott pillanatban csak egyetlen Oracle processz futtatását engedélyezi, miközben a többit várakoztatja (ahogy az egy operációs rendszer ütemezojében is muködik). A Resource Manager csak akkor lép muködésbe, amikor a CPU terhelése eléri a 100%-ot. Ekkor a Resource Plan-nek megfeleloen korlátozhatja az egyes eroforrás csoportok számára elérheto eroforrás (CPU) mennyiségét. Instance Caging: A Resource Manager részeként az Oracle Database 11gR2-tol elérheto Instance Caging technológiával virtualizáció és operációs rendszer szintu eroforrás felosztás nélkül az adatbázis példány szintjén lehet szabályozni az allokált CPU számot. Erre akkor lehet szükség, ha egy szerveren több példány futtatására van szükség. A Resource Manager bekapcsolásával és a cpu_count paraméter beállításával lehet adatbázis példányonként aktiválni az Instance Caging funkcionalitást. A cpu_count egy dinamikus paraméter, célszeru arra az értékre állítani, ahány CPU-t az adott adatbázis példány maximálisan igényelhet. Lehetoség van túlméretezni a példányok számára rendelkezésre álló processzorok számát. Például egy 4 CPUs- szerver esetében ha van 3 példányunk, mindháromnak adhatunk 3 CPU-t. Azonban ha mindegyik terhelés alatt van, akkor a példány számára maximum allokált CPU szám osztva összes allokált CPU számmal arányban részesül a processzorból, ami a példában 33,33%, azaz 1,33 CPU. Input Output Resource Manager (IORM):Nem csak a processzorok használatát szabályozhatjuk, lehetoség van a megosztott storage eroforrásainak felosztására is. Az Input Output Resorce Manager (IORM) alkalmazásával storage szinten tudjuk szabályozni az adatbázisok közötti és azokon belüli minimális I/O szinteket. Database Vault: Ugyanazon adatbázisba konszolidált alkalmazások esetén a rendszergazda szerepkörök szeparálása lehetséges az Oracle Database Vault technológiával. Ezzel elérheto az, hogy biztonságosan konszolidáljuk adatbázisainkat úgy, hogy minden adminisztrátor csak a hozzá tartozó adatokat, objektumokat lássa, módosíthassa.

We believe supporting the development of open standards is fundamental to Oracle meeting customer demands for product choice, seamless interoperability, and lowering the cost of ownership. Nowhere is this truer than in the area of cloud standards, and for the most recent release of our flagship management product, Oracle Enterprise Manager Cloud Control 12c (EM Cloud Control 12c). There is a fundamental rule that standards follow architecture. This was true of distributed computing, it was true of service-oriented architecture (SOA), and it's true of cloud. If you are familiar with Enterprise Manager it is likely to be no surprise that EM Cloud Control 12c is a source of technology that can be considered for adoption within cloud management standards. The reason, quite simply, is that the Oracle integrated stack architecture aligns with the cloud architecture models being adopted by the industry, and EM Cloud Control 12c has been developed to manage this architecture. EM Cloud Control 12c has facilities for managing the various underlying capabilities of the integrated stack in IaaS, PaaS, and SaaS clouds, and enables essential characteristics such as on-demand self-service provisioning, centralized policy-based resource management, integrated chargeback, and capacity planning, and complete visibility of the physical and virtual environment from applications to disk. Our most recent contribution in support of cloud management standards to come out of the EM Cloud Control 12c work was the Oracle Cloud Elemental Resource Model API. Oracle contributed the Elemental Resource Model API to the Distributed Management Task Force (DMTF) in 2011 where it was assigned to DMTF's Cloud Management Working Group (CMWG). The CMWG is considering the Oracle specification and those of several other vendors in their effort to produce a best practices specification for managing IaaS clouds. DMTF's Cloud Infrastructure Management Interface specification, called CIMI for short, is currently out for public review and expected to be released by DMTF later this year. • Problem opening SFX archive file(.exe) using the archive manager

  I have installed both rar and unrar using apt-install but I am still not able to use archive manager for opening the archive file.. I have also tried installing p7zip(p7zip-full and p7zip) but no improvements... However, when I use command-line for extracting the files from the archive using unrar or rar the command executes successfully... Is there any other open source software I should install for viewing the contents of the SFX archive or what else should I install to view the same in the archive manager.. Thanks in advance...

• Activity log manager is not preventing Zeitgeist from logging files

  I am running Gnome Shell and I do not like Zeitgeist indexing all my files. This makes the search in dash very slow. I do not want the dash to search recent files, so I installed activity log manager to prevent zeitgeist's logging activity. I configured the log manager as below. But even after adding every folder, the files keep appearing in the dash under Recent Items. Is there any other software or tweak which will instruct zeitgeist to search only applications installed in my system and not my recent files.

  Oracle Enterprise Manager Cloud Control 12c Release 2 (12.1.0.2) is now available on OTN on ALL platforms. This is the first major release since the launch of Enterprise Manager 12c in October of 2011 and the first ever Enterprise Manager release available on all platforms simultaneously. This is primarily a stability release which incorporates many of issues and feedback reported by early adopters. In addition, this release contains many new features and enhancements in areas across the board.   New Capabilities and Features   Enhanced management capabilities for enterprise private clouds: Introduces new capabilities to allow customers to build and manage a Java Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) cloud based on Oracle Weblogic Server. The new capabilities include guided set up of PaaS Cloud, self-service provisioning, automatic scale out and metering and chargeback. Enhanced lifecycle management capabilities for Oracle WebLogic Server environments: Combining in-context multiple domain, patching and configuration file synchronizations. Integrated Hardware-Software management for Oracle Exalogic Elastic Cloud through features such as rack schematics visualization and integrated monitoring of all hardware and software components. The latest management capabilities for business-critical applications include: Business Application Management: A new Business Application (BA) target type and dashboard with flexible definitions provides a logical view of an application’s business transactions, end-user experiences and the cloud infrastructure the monitored application is running on. Enhanced User Experience Reporting: Oracle Real User Experience Insight has been enhanced to provide reporting capabilities on client-side issues for applications running in the cloud and has been more tightly coupled with Oracle Business Transaction Management to help ensure that real-time user experience and transaction tracing data is provided to users in context. Several key improvements address ease of administration, reporting and extensibility for massively scalable cloud environments including dynamic groups, self-updateable monitoring templates, bulk operations against many events, etc. New and Revised Plug-Ins:   Several plug-Ins have been updated as a part of this release resulting in either new versions or revisions. • Ubuntu apt-get install linux-image

  I'd like someone to enlighten me as to what exactly goes on with aptitude when I want a kernel. As we all know, there's pretty much the following kernel option: linux-image-generic linux-image-server linux-image-virtual This morning I did an install and it had linux-image-generic on it, so I ran the following: apt-get -y remove linux-image-* This removed all my kernels as expected, I followed suit with running: apt-get install linux-image-virtual Says I've installed linux-image-server!? Am I missing something here, because I checked twice and it did it twice, however if I manually select a kernel (in my instance I used: linux-image-2.6.35-30-virtual) it will install linux-image-virtual. This seems rather strange to me? Details: Running Ubuntu 9.10 Am I missing something? :)
