  • Windows XP periodically disconnects, reconnects; Windows 7 doesn't

    My setup: I have a PC with a Gigabyte GA-MA78S2H motherboard (Realtek Gigabit wired Ethernet on-board). I have the latest drivers (at least the latest driver for the NIC. I'm connecting via an Edimax BR-6216Mg (again, wired connection). For some reason I experience short periodic disconnects and reconnects. Specifically, Skype disconnects, tries to connect, succeeds after a short while; incoming SFTP sessions get dropped; using a browser, I sometime get stuck in the DNS lookup or connection to the website and a page won't load. A couple of seconds later, a reload works. All this happens with Windows XP SP3. With Windows 7, it doesn't happen. The connection is smooth (OS is sluggish though, but never mind that). Like I said, I updated the NIC driver. I tried reducing the MTU (used something called Dr. TCP), thinking maybe that would help, but it didn't. (I'm a bit but not super-knowledgeable about TCP parameters.)   • Auto Log-Off Windows users - Windows 2003 domain

    I am trying to make windows clients automatically log off after some time, I have been trying to use the winexit.scr which I have seen working else where in a similar environment. After working though these instructions (I did read the comments and notice the original ADM provided is buggy) I've had no joy what so ever! Winexit.scr refuses to read any settings in the registry, even while using a test account I can access the required reg key(s); edit, add, and remove values. Essentially winexit.scr always uses it's default values: 30 second timeout, no forced log-out. What I really want is a 30 minute timeout with a forced log-out, closing all the users apps etc. I've tried removing and re-adding the ADM template, creating the GPO from scratch several times, giving various registry permissions - including full control to "Everybody" just for fun! Oh, clients are all win XP SP3, DC is win 2003 R2 SP2. So, can anybody suggest something? Cheers!

    After discovering and replacing my dead PSU, I was able to boot back into Windows. Everything seems to be working fine, however, one hard drive is not. Windows 7 says that this SATA hard drive needs to be formatted before it can work. Can the data be recovered? Also, is there a way to check the integrity of the other components of my computer or assume they will work fine?

    Why can a USB Flash drive be formatted as NTFS or FAT32? Is the USB Flash Drive and Hard Drive just to be thought of as "an ocean of bytes"? I get very used to hearing formatting a hard drive as FAT32 or NTFS, but we can also format a USB Flash drive as NTFS or FAT32? Is it because a hard drive or Flash drive both can be thought of as "an ocean of bits" or "an ocean of bytes"? I remember RAM as: it takes 16 bit or 32 bit as an address signal (the 16 or 32 copper footing on the circuit board), and give out 8 bit of data (the other 8 copper footing on the circuit board). So can a hard drive be thought of as working that way too? So that's why a Flash drive can be the same too? Just an "ocean of bytes". But is it true that hard drive's hardware make it an ocean of sector or something else, that is, the smaller unit of read / write is not byte but something else? So with this "ocean of bytes", NTFS has the format that says, "if the first byte is __, then it means __ (it is a file or folder, and link to which sector, indicated by byte 2 and 3, etc, etc)"

  • Has anyone had luck getting an external hard drive working with a PCMCIA USB card?

    I would like to know if anyone has had any success in getting and external 2.5" IDE hard drive in an external case (w/USB cable) working when plugged into a PCMCIA USB card. My hard drive doesn't work when plugged into my HT-Link Cardbus/PCMCIA USB 2.0 2-port card (NEC / 32-bit). My MP3 player will work fine when plugged into it. I tried plugging in both of the USB cables that are one one end (Y cable), and it doesn't make a difference. I read the problem may be insufficient power.

  • Cannot connect Windows 7 PCs to a Windows 2011 SBS domain

    I can connect XP machines just fine to our new domain, however, I get the following error when I try to bind any Windows 7 box on our network to the 2011 SBS domain: An attempt to resolve the DNS name of a DC in the domain being joined has failed. Please verify this client is configured to reach a DNS server that can resolve DNS names in the target domain. I am wondering if part of the problem might be related to the fact we still have our Win2k DC active (and running DNS) until this server is set up for good? Any help on this would be much appreciated.

  • Windows 8 Installation Fails

    I have the Windows 8 32-bit ISO which fails to install when booted from a USB flash drive. It copies the files, the boot loader installs, but the install hangs when I boot into Windows 8 for the first time--it simply keeps on spinning forever. The Windows 8 Release Preview does not work either. I did a VHD install of Windows 8 Developer Preview and it installed fine. Looking at the partition from Windows 7, I can see that the files are present. What could be the problem?

  • USB 3.0 hub; what can it power?

    I own an Asus UX31A laptop, equipped with 2 USB 3.0 ports. I would like to connect several USB devices to one of these ports, using a USB 3.0 hub. 1) Am I correct in assuming the Asus "USB Charger+" commercial blurb corresponds to the USB 3.0 standard "Battery Charging Specification 1.2", and furthermore inferring that the laptop can deliver 1.5A through a USB port? 2) Does a powered external USB 3.0 hard drive draw on the USB power lines? 3) I would like to connect the aforementionned drive, an android phone, and a 200mA rated optical mouse to an unpowered USB 3.0 hub, itself plugged into the laptop.   • Install Problem (Ubuntu Server 10.04) with USB as it reboots when I hit 'enter' for 'Install Ubuntu Server' option! Help

    We cannot seem to install Ubuntu Server with USB as it reboots when I hit 'enter' for 'Install Ubuntu Server' option. My friend wants to try setting up a server so; we downloaded Ubuntu Server 10.04.4 we created a boot CD and installed ubuntu server no problem at all. But then the problem arose the hardrive we wanted to use is a 1tb sata drive and the computer orginally has 40gb IDE. So I bought a Sata to IDE and IDE to Sata converter from: http://www.microdirect.co.uk/Home/Product/52926/IDE-to-SATA-converter---Converts-IDE-HDD-to-SATA-inc-sata-data-and-power-cables Unfortunately this converter means I cannot plug in the IDE cable meaning I only have one IDE connection i.e CD drive has to be disconnected for the 1tb sata Hardrive to be connected. So now the 1tb drive is connected, powered it on opened the bios to make sure the hdd appeared it did as ST3ASDAPFKG (somthing like that). Fortunately the computer supports USB booting, so I read ubuntu server usb install instructions I tried: Startup Disk Creator & Unebootin Startup Disk Creator made the usb bootable with the 'ubuntu-10.04.4-server-i386.iso' All looked fine stuck the usb drive in, booted the machine up and I am quickly presented with ubuntu language choice. I hit enter to select English then I am presented with: Install Ubuntu Server, Install Ubuntu Enterprise Cloud, Check Disk for defects, test memory, Boot from first hard disk, Rescue a broken system I can move up and down the menu fine everything seems ok, I select 'Install Ubuntu Server', computer just hangs and screen either goes blank or locks. So I rebooted the computer loads the same menus fine, I select 'Install Ubuntu Server' hit 'enter' and the computer just restarts then brings me back to the same menu. hmmm Then I tried choosing the rest of the options separately: Install Ubuntu Server, Install Ubuntu Enterprise Cloud, Check Disk for defects, test memory, Boot from first hard disk, Rescue a broken system computer just restarts and back to the same ubuntu menu every-time. Grrrr At this point I wish I actually new how to command line install or something but I don't have a clue how to do that. So I tried hitting 'f6' for 'other options' and I tried them all in various combinations and individually. No Luck: (Expert mode, acpi=off, noapic, nolapic, edd=on, nodmraid, nomodeset, Free Software only) At this point I am wondering if it is a bios setting causing problems, I tried turning every option in there on off that I don't understand. No Luck. I then discovered by accident if you hit esc in the ubuntu install menu it says "you are leaving the graphical boot menu and starting the text mode interface" I hit 'Ok'. Next a prompt pops up saying 'boot:' One time it responded when I typed somthing with 'Cannot find kernal image (something like that but since then it just restarts when I hit enter in that prompt). I had a browse on the net and found someone suggesting removing quiet from install command for 'Install Ubuntu Server'. Made no difference at all just reboots... Orginal boot options noprompt cdrom-detect/try-usb=true persistent file=/cdrom/preseed/ubuntu-server.seed initrd=/install/initrd.gz quiet -- Modified boot options noprompt cdrom-detect/try-usb=true persistent file=/cdrom/preseed/ubuntu-server.seed initrd=/install/initrd.gz -- Still I cannot install Ubuntu Server by USB as it, reboots when I hit 'enter' for 'Install Ubuntu Server' option. This is a real pain as we cannot take the 1tb Sata Hardrive and swap it for IDE to be able to use the cd drive. Why is is it so hard to install ubuntu server with usb? I have wasted a full day and half on this really frustrated any help would be amazing! I know the answers out there just seems a bit illusive at the moment!   • Adding UCM as a search source in Windows Explorer

    A customer recently pointed out to me that Windows 7 supports federated search within Windows Explorer. This means you can perform searches to external sources such as Google, Flickr, YouTube, etc right from within Explorer. While we do have the Desktop Integration Suite which offers searching within Explorer, I thought it would be interesting to look into this method which would not require any client software to implement. Basically, federated searching hooks up in Windows Explorer through the OpenSearch protocol. A Search Connector Descriptor file is run and it installs the search provider. The file is a .osdx file which is an OpenSearch Description document. It describes the search provider you are hooking up to along with the URL for the query. If those results can come back as an RSS or ATOM feed, then you're all set. So the first step is to install the RSS Feeds component from the UCM Samples page on OTN. If you're on 11g, I've found the RSS Feeds works just fine on that version too. Next, you want to perform a Quick Search with a particular search term and then copy the RSS link address for that search result. Here is what an example URL might looks like: http://server:16200/cs/idcplg?IdcService=GET_SCS_FEED&feedName=search_results&QueryText=%28+%3cqsch%3eoracle%3c%2fqsch %3e+%29&SortField=dInDate&SortOrder=Desc&ResultCount=20&SearchQueryFormat= Universal&SearchProviders=server& Now you want to create a new text file and start out with this information: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?><OpenSearchDescription xmlns:ms-ose="http://schemas.microsoft.com/opensearchext/2009/"> <ShortName></ShortName> <Description></Description> <Url type="application/rss+xml" template=""/> <Url type="text/html" template=""/> </OpenSearchDescription> Enter a ShortName and Description. The ShortName will be the value used when displaying the search provider in Explorer. In the template attribute for the first Url element, enter the URL copied previously. You will then need to convert the ampersand symbols to '&' to make them XML compliant. Finally, you'll want to switch out the search term with '{searchTerms}'. For the second Url element, you can do the same thing except you want to copy the UCM search results URL from the page of results. That URL will look something like: http://server:16200/cs/idcplg?IdcService=GET_SEARCH_RESULTS&SortField=dInDate&SortOrder=Desc&ResultCount=20&QueryText=%3Cqsch%3Eoracle%3C%2Fqsch%3E&listTemplateId= &ftx=1&SearchQueryFormat=Universal&TargetedQuickSearchSelection= &MiniSearchText=oracle Again, convert the ampersand symbols and replace the search term with '{searchTerms}'. When complete, save the file with the .osdx extension. The completed file should look like: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?> <OpenSearchDescription xmlns="http://a9.com/-/spec/opensearch/1.1/" xmlns:ms-ose="http://schemas.microsoft.com/opensearchext/2009/"> <ShortName>Universal Content Management</ShortName> <Description>OpenSearch for UCM via Windows 7 Search Federation.</Description> <Url type="application/rss+xml" template="http://server:16200/cs/idcplg?IdcService=GET_SCS_FEED&amp;feedName=search_results&amp;QueryText=%28+%3Cqsch%3E{searchTerms}%3C%2fqsch%3E+%29&amp;SortField=dInDate&amp;SortOrder=Desc&amp;ResultCount=200&amp;SearchQueryFormat=Universal"/> <Url type="text/html" template="http://server:16200/cs/idcplg?IdcService=GET_SEARCH_RESULTS&amp;SortField=dInDate&amp;SortOrder=Desc&amp;ResultCount=20&amp;QueryText=%3Cqsch%3E{searchTerms}%3C%2Fqsch%3E&amp;listTemplateId=&amp;ftx=1&amp;SearchQueryFormat=Universal&amp;TargetedQuickSearchSelection=&amp;MiniSearchText={searchTerms}"/> </OpenSearchDescription> After you save the file, simply double-click it to create the provider. It will ask if you want to add the search connector to Windows. Click Add and it will add it to the Searches folder in your user folder as well as your Favorites. Now just click on the search icon and in the upper right search box, enter your term. As you are typing, it begins executing searches and the results will come back in Explorer. Now when you double-click on an item, it will try and download the web viewable for viewing. You also have the ability to save the search, just as you would in UCM. And there is a link to Search On Website which will launch your browser and go directly to the search results page there. And with some tweaks to the RSS component, you can make the results a bit more interesting. It supports the Media RSS standard, so you can pass along the thumbnail of the documents in the results. To enable this, edit the rss_resources.htm file in the RSS Feeds component. In the std_rss_feed_begin resource include, add the namespace 'xmlns:media="http://search.yahoo.com/mrss/' to the rss definition: <rss version="2.0" xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/" xmlns:sy="http://purl.org/rss/1.0/modules/syndication/" xmlns:media="http://search.yahoo.com/mrss/"> Next, in the rss_channel_item_with_thumb include, below the closing image element, add this element: </images> <media:thumbnail url="<$if strIndexOf(thumbnailUrl, "@t") > 0 or strIndexOf(thumbnailUrl, "@g") > 0 or strIndexOf(thumbnailUrl, "@p") > 0$><$rssHttpHost$><$thumbnailUrl$><$elseif dGif$><$HttpWebRoot$>images/docgifs/<$dGif$><$endif$>" /> <description> This and lots of other tweaks can be done to the RSS component to help extend it for optimum use in Explorer.   • USB file transfer preparing to copy, but file count climbs indefinitely

    I have downloaded Ubuntu 12.04 to back up my Windows machine that won't boot and am running Ubuntu from the CD. I copied and pasted a volume of about 160GB to my external HDD. The transfer has been stuck in the "preparing to copy" stage for several hours and is displaying a file/GB count about twice as high as the volume of data actually being copied! The number is now larger than the entire partition that's being copied from! However I know it's doing something because occasionally it pops up with a minor I/O error on this or that file which I then have to click through. I've not had this problem before so I can only assume it's a Linux/Ubuntu thing. More importantly what I want to know is is there any other way to copy it across that will actually work?

  • Booting 11.10 from USB stick on MacBook Pro 5,1 fails

    I've created a bootable memory stick on a Windows computer, and tested it on an HP PC. It's made from a 64-bit image of Ubuntu 11.10, downloaded from http://www.ubuntu.com/download/ubuntu/download. When I boot from this memory stick, there is some kind of boot menu, where I can choose to run Ubuntu from the memory stick, or install. I select Run from memory stick. (the words may be wrong here, I'm taking it from memory.) From this point, the screen is black (but backlighted), and I can't do anything but turn off the computer. It gets hot, too. Has anyone been more successful than me? Are there known issues? The computer is a 15 inch MacBook Pro 5,1 (unibody, late 2008), 4 GB memory.

  • I installed Ubuntu alongside Windows but I can't see it in Windows' boot menu

    I have a second machine where Ubuntu 12.04 LTS and Debian Squeeze are installed on the same HD and when I boot, I have this grub menu where I can choose which partition I will used. It works perfectly! But in my Windows environment that's another story. Now after making almost everything that I know, to make it work along Windows 7, there is no entry in the boot menu of Windows (I know, Ubuntu use grub but anyway there is surely a way to fix it, access it?). Why there is no Ubuntu entry? Why the installation gave me no error while I have this strange situation of having a "ghost OS" called Ubuntu installed somewhere in my second HD in a partition made especially for it and not being able to access it, starting it, having it working? Am I wrong? If I am, what's the problem? If I'm not, what's the need of Wubi?
