• Which programming language should I choose I want to build this website ...? [closed]

  Assuming that I will start with just phot sharing website. Every user can add comments to any photo. After that the site will contain news (general news), the admin can add any news and the moderators as well while the users can also add comments on this news. The website will aslo provide photos uploader, so every user will have up to 20 MB ti upload any photos they want. Other users can see these photos or can not depending on the option that the main user chose(if he wants to publish his photos or not). The site should have a small type of forum which provide the ability for admin to ad categories and for user to add topics and replies for each topic in these categoris. These are the things that I can think of now, but the website will add other features as well and services later on. Can you tell me now which programming language can help me to do all that? I need a programming language that provdies the follwing: 1- speed load for pages of the site. 2- easy to add more functions quickly and easy to edit code for any reason. 3- Secure 4- fast in displaying infromation from database.

With big data (should we start calling it “any data analytics” instead?) being the buzz word and analytics the key operative goal, not moving data around is becoming more and more critical to the business users. Why? Because instead of spending time on moving data around into your next analytics server you should be running analytics on those CPUs. You could always do this with Oracle Data Mining within the Oracle Database. But a lot of folks want to leverage R as their main tool. • Should I be learning Linq, Direct SQL Commands (in .net), EF or other?

  Basically, I have a very good knowledge of plain old SQL coming from Classic ASP programming. Over the past couple of months, I have been learning C# and today was my first full day at MVC 3 (Razor) which I am loving! I need to get back in to Databases and I know that writing SqlCommand everywhere is obviously outdated (although it is nice I can still do it!). I used to go to a great usergroup as an IT Pro and the developer stuff went completely over my head, however I do remember a few things which kept coming up such as LINQ... However, that was some time ago and now the same people on Twitter are saying how out dated it is. I have tried to do research on both and I am clueless as to what direction I should go in, or when to use one over another (if learning both is a good thing). I am more so confused as I thought EF was a part of the .Net Framework, however, reading through the quick start guide, I had to download a component using Nuget. ... Basically I am out of my depth here and just need some honest advice of where to go!

• Hosting and scaling a Facebook application in the cloud? [migrated]

  We would be building a Facebook application in Django (Python), but still not sure of where to host it economically, and with a good provision to scale in case the app gets viral. Some details about the app: Would be HTML based like a website,using django as a framework. 100K is the number of expected pageviews in a day, if the app is viral. The users will not generate any media content, only some database data will be generated by them. It would be great if someone with more experience can guide on following points: A) Hosting on Google app engine or Amazon EC2 or some other cloud like RackSpace : Preferable points found in AppEngine were ease of deployment, cost effectiveness and easy scaling. For EC2: Full hold of the virtual machine,Amazon NoSQL and RDMBS database services in case we decide to use them. B) Does backend technology affect monthly cost? eg. would CPU and memory usage difference of Django over , for example , PHP framework like CodeIgnitor really make remarkable difference in running costs. • I can't get grub menu to show up during boot

  After trying (and failing) to install better ATI drivers in 11.10, I've somehow lost my grub menu at boot time. The screen does change to the familiar purple colour, but instead of a list of boot options it's just blank solid colour, and then disappears quickly and boots into the default entry normally. How can I get the bootloader back? I've tried sudo update-grub and also various different combinations of resolutions and colour depths in startupmanager application with no success (640x480, 1024x768, 1600x1200, 16 bits, 8 bits, 10 second delay, 7 second delay, 2 second delay...) edit: I have already tried holding down Shift during bootup and it does not seem to change the behaviour. I get the message "GRUB Loading" in the terminal, but then the place where the grub menu normally appears I get a solid blank magenta screen for a while. • Cuda driver, CPU/GPU performances issue

  I implemented a RNS Montgomery exponentiation in Cuda and on cpu for comparison. Everything nice everything fine. It runs on just one SM. However I am going to tell you some strange regression in both cpu/gpu performances. During the devoloping, about two month ago, I was using Cuda 5 preview on Ubuntu 11.04 64b. In this time, I reach the following performances: cpu 460ms gpu 120ms Then one day when I turn on the pc, the graphical environment didnt start. I dont know which was the problem, however I switched to the console and installed again the Cuda driver. At the following boot performances changed: cpu 310ms gpu 80ms I was like Q.Q...uhm ok, nice to see this, but I was wondering how that could be possible However, I went then in holiday for 10 days and I continued developing and optimizing on my notebook (but not the same part of the code, some additional stuff) When I was back, I just updated the source files, and performances came back to 460/120ms.. I couldnt believe it, I tried to install Cuda 5 RC, updating the video driver too... nothing changed... I checked Debug/Release, Cuda computability, but the problem seems being somewhere else.. Looking around the net I found this, I am pretty sure it must have something to do with the driver, because the performance change affected both cpu and gpu Do you have some tips/ideas/suggestions?

• What sort of data should be sent for mouse-based movement in a multiplayer game?

  I'm new to the Multiplayer Rodeo here so please bear with me... I am just getting started and I'm trying to figure out how to deal with movement. I've looked at the question Best way to implement mouse-based movement in MMOG which gives me a pretty good idea, but I'm still struggling with what kind of data should be sent to the server. If a player is on position [x:0, y:0] and I click with the mouse on [x:40, y:40] to start movement, what information should I send to the server? Should I calculate the position based on velocity on client side and just send the expected location? Or should I send current location and velocity and direction? When the server is updating the clients on the players' whereabouts, should the position be sent only, and the clients expected to interpolate/predict movement, or can the direction sent from the client (instead of just coordinates) be used. My concern(or confusion) is regarding the ping/lag frequency of data update and use of a predictive algorithm, as I'd like the movement to be smooth even with a high latency, and prevent ability to cheat(though that's not the top priority).

• What are some good tips for a developer trying to design a scalable MySQL database?

  As the question states, I am a developer, not a DBA. I have experience with designing good ER schemas and am fairly knowledgeable about normalization and good schema design. I have also worked with data warehouses that use dimensional modeling with fact tables and dim tables. However, all of the database-driven applications I've developed at previous jobs have been internal applications on the company's intranet, never receiving "real-world traffic". Furthermore, at previous jobs, I have always had a DBA or someone who knew much more than me about these things. At this new job I just started, I've been asked to develop a public-facing application with a MySQL backend and the data stored by this application is expected to grow very rapidly. Oh, and we don't have a DBA. Well, I guess I am the DBA. ;) As far as designing a database to be scalable, I don't even know where to start. Does anyone have any good tips or know of any good educational materials for a developer who has been sort of shoved into a DBA/database designer role and has been tasked with designing a scalable database to support an application like this? Have any other developers been through this sort of thing? What did you do to quickly become good at this role? I've found some good slides on the subject here but it's hard to glean details from slides. Wish I could've attended that guy's talk. I also found a good blog entry called 5 Ways to Boost MySQL Scalability which had some good information, though some of it was over my head. tl;dr I just want to make sure the database doesn't have to be completely redesigned when it scales up, and I'm looking for tips to get it right the first time. The answer I'm looking for is a "list of things every developer should know about making a scalable MySQL database so your application doesn't perform like crap when the data gets huge".

• How to avoid jumping to a solution when under pressure? [closed]

  When under a particularly strict programming deadline (like an hour), if I panic at all, my tendency is to jump into coding without a real plan and hope I figure it out as I go along. Given enough time, this can work, but in an interview it's been pretty unsuccessful, if not downright counter-productive. I'm not always comfortable sitting there thinking while the clock ticks away. Is there a checklist or are there techniques to recognize when you understand the problem well enough to start coding? Maybe don't touch the keyboard for the first 5-10 minutes of the problem? At what point do you give up and code a brute-force solution with the hope of reasoning out a better solution later? When is it most productive to think and design more vs. code some experiments to and figure out the design later? Here is a list of techniques for taking a math test and another for taking an oral exam. Is there is a similar list of techniques for handling a programming problem under pressure?   I am trying to get HDMI output using a Gainward Nvidia 210 512 MB on Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx. I have upgraded alsa-driver, alsa-lib and alsa-utils to 1.0.24 by building from source, thanks to this blog post. • What to learn after standard C++?

  I switched to C++ a few months ago, learning its syntax, the main features of the STL and what you can usually find in a "learn C++" manual. Now I would like to go further. What would be your recommendations? I would like to know what to learn next (not only about the language, but also debugging, frameworks etc. etc.) I know probably the answer depends on the specific needs of each user, so here is a list of mine: Cross Platform development Developing GUI for my programs Develop extendible software, allowing the use of plugins Use of scientific libraries Interact with databases (mainly MySQL) Having server/client functionalities (I'd like users of my programs to interact through internet.. as you might have guessed I am not a programmer by training so I might have used the wrong terms.. if so I apologize for that). • Effective and simple matching for 2 unequal small-scale point sets

  I need to match two sets of 3D points, however the number of points in each set can be different. It seems that most algorithms are designed to align images and trimmed to work with hundreds of thousands of points. My case are 50 to 150 points in each of the two sets. So far I have acquainted myself with Iterative Closest Point and Procrustes Matching algorithms. Implementing Procrustes algorithms seems like a total overkill for this small quantity. ICP has many implementations, but I haven't found any readily implemented version accounting for the so-called "outliers" - points without a matching pair. Besides the implementation expense, algorithms like Fractional and Sparse ICP use some statistics information to cancel points that are considered outliers. For series with 50 to 150 points statistic measures are often biased or statistic significance criteria are not met. I know of Assignment Problem in linear optimization, but it is not suitable for cases with unequal sets of points. Are there other, small-scale algorithms that solve the problem of matching 2 point sets? I am looking for algorithm names, scientific papers or C++ implementations. I need some hints to know where to start my search.

• Grub problem - Command prompt

  Update: Thanks to all who helped. I gave up and am going to re-install. Not the end of the world, no files will be lost :-) This time will be backing up grub haha. Thanks again, I really appreciate the community's help on this. I was going along fine when the new pae kernel came down, and it had some bug where the sound was all messed up. So I used startup manager to choose the older pae kernel and rebooted. But startupmanager must have fuXXored my grub. When I re-booted, I get thrown directly into memtest and thats it. I tried to re-install grub using the live disc method that I found in many places. That changed something so I get a prompt and the message: "GNU grub version 1.99 ubuntu. Minimal BASH-like editing is supported. Type help for complete list." But then I tried the live CD fix again and now am back at the memtest... What can I do to get my system running again? UPDATE: Just to be clear,when I start up I get a blinking cursor in the top left, and the word 'ON' in the middle of the screen. Then, after a good minute or two, the memtest starts.

• Wireless switch on Dell XT2 - strange behaviour of rfkill

  I have an Dell Latitude XT2 using an Intel WLAN card (lspci lists it as "Intel Corporation Ultimate N WiFi Link 5300") running Lubuntu 12.04 with recent updates. The laptop has a hardware WLAN switch. I have problems activating the WLAN when booting with the hardware switch set to "off". The situation is a bit confusing, unfortunately. rfkill lists two WLAN devices (though lspci only shows the Intel one). This is the situation when booting with the hardware switch set to "Off": 0: dell-wifi: Wireless LAN Soft blocked: yes Hard blocked: yes 1: dell-bluetooth: Bluetooth Soft blocked: yes Hard blocked: yes 2: phy0: Wireless LAN Soft blocked: yes Hard blocked: yes From some tests, I conclude WLAN is only activated when both, the dell-wifi and phy0, are unblocked by soft- and hardware. But I can only unblock dell-wifi after the hardware switch is set to "on". Procedure right from boot with hardware switch set to "Off": Soft-unblocking phy0 works as expected. Could be done by start-up script. sudo rfkill unblock 0: nothing happens. Soft block of dell-wifi not removed. Set the hardware switch to "on": phy0 gets its hard block removed. Still no WLAN. sudo rfkill unblock 0: both the soft and hard lock of dell-wifi are removed. WLAN is now active and works. sudo rfkill block 0: only adds the soft block as expected. WLAN goes off again. So, in order to activate WLAN, I have to use the hardware switch and afterwards (manually) run a script - that's a bit inconvenient. Does someone know a better solution? Maybe a daemon could help that listens to rfkill events to unblock dell-wifi after I have set the hardware switch to "on"? (sounds like another workaround) When booting with the hardware switch set to "On", nothing is blocked neither hard nor soft.

• Dynamic quadrees

  recently I come out writing Quadtree for creatures culling in Opendungeons game. Thing is those are moving points and bounding hierarchy will quickly get lost if the quadtree is not rebuild very often. I have several variants, first is to upgrade the leaf position , every time creature move is requested. ( note if I would need collision detection anyway, so this might be necessery anyway). Second would be making leafs enough large , that the creature would sure stay inside it's bounding box ( due to its speed limit). The partition of a plane in quadtree is always fixed ( modulo the hierarchical unions of some parts) . For creatures close to the center of the plane , there would be no way of keeping it but inside one big leaf, besides this brokes the invariant that each point can be put into any small area as desired. So on the second thought could I use several quadrees ? Each would have its "coordinate axis XY" somwhere shifted ?   I've decided to install ubuntu but neither ubuntu or any other linux distro won't even get to the desktop screen or work after getting there. On windows 8, everything is just fine. my new video card works perfectly and I have no problem with anything about it. then when I try to boot from ubuntu with wubi or with usb everything goes like this: 1) Grub screen...no problem at all, colors are just fine everything looks okay 2) and then linux boot screen...weird background color, over the backround there are vertical stripes of red-orange dots. but on the ubuntu logo and text, there are no dots at all! -I mean its shape is perfect- 3) desktop is about the start but * vertical stripes of red colored dots are all over the unity screen*. then when I click on ubuntu's menu, it usually switches to black screen saying something about "panic occured"...and then it restarts or it gives no respond at all. problems started after putting hd 6570 video card on my asus m5a78lm-lx video card which has amd phenom II X4 processor on it. I've searched to find something but there was no similar question that's why I'm almost sure it is kind of unique. again, I'm writing on Windows 8 right now and everything works and looks perfect. so far I've updated bios and anyone knows anything to solve this?

• How to join the World of Programming? [closed]

  Name's Vlad and I am currently on my third year of Community College, studying Computer Science with emphasis on Programming in C++ and Networking. I have completed a few programming courses with general ease, but have not gained advanced understanding of programming through school. None of my friends are serious programmers working in the industry. Being an active lurker on many programming websites, and in general tech oriented sites I have noticed how little I know about the industry, the lingo and terminology. (I have no clue how Git hub works, but I generally understand what its for). So I am looking for help as to where I should look for information on the programming world and the industry in which I a very interested. By that I mean, what sites I should utilize to gain information on programming practices, introduction to advanced C++ and resources that simply introduce a 20some programming noob. I like programming, but I haven't dug my hands deep into it yet, I want to start to do so before I transfer to a University. • Ubuntu boots in read-only filesystem after upgrade!

  I got a serious problem here: I recently upgraded to the Latest Version of Ubuntu. Now, I boot to my Ubuntu Partition, and I get a Low-Graphics error! I boot to a Recovery-Mode to see what the Problem is. Then, I try to Fix any Damaged Packages, to run fsck but nothing solved the Problem. Then, from the Recovery Menu, I open a Root Shell. I try to create a File and I understand that the Filesystem is Read-Only. Then, I run: mount -o remount,rw / and it Worked for that Terminal Session! When I go back to recovery, I select to resume Boot Normally but I get the Same Error! a I also tried to Boot to my Root Shell again, remount as Read-Write and Start Gnome from there. It Worked! (But the user is ROOT, and is quite Dangerous!) However, I can't do all this proccess at every boot! Any Solution? (Note that when I try to create a new File in my Ubuntu Partition from another OS, I don't get any Errors!)

• When NOT to use a framework

  Today, one can find a framework for just about any language, to suit just about any project. Most modern frameworks are fairly robust (generally speaking), with hour upon hour of testing, peer reviewed code, and great extensibility. However, I think there is a downside to ANY framework in that programmers, as a community, may become so reliant upon their chosen frameworks that they no longer understand the underlying workings, or in the case of newer programmers, never learn the underlying workings to begin with. It is easy to become specialized to a degree that you are no longer a 'PHP programmer' (for example), but a "Drupal programmer", to the exclusion of anything else. Who cares, right? We have the framework! We don't need to know how to "do it by hand"! Right? The result of this loss of basic skills (sometimes to the extent that programmers who don't use frameworks are viewed as "outdated") is that it becomes common practice to use a framework where it is not required or appropriate. The features the framework facilitates wind up confused with what the base language is capable of. Developers start using frameworks to accomplish even the most basic of tasks, so that what once was considered a rudimentary process now involves large libraries with their own quirks, bugs, and dependencies. What was once accomplished in 20 lines is now accomplished by including a 20,000 line framework AND writing 20 lines to use the framework. Conversely, one does not want to reinvent the wheel. If I'm writing code to accomplish some basic, common little task, I might feel like I am wasting my time when I know that framework XYZ offers all the features I am after, and a whole lot more. The "whole lot more" part still has me worried, but it doesn't seem that many even consider it anymore. There has to be a good metric to determine when it is appropriate to use a framework. What do you consider the threshold to be, how do you decide when to use a framework, or, when not.

• What's the right/standard way of achieving separation of concerns?

  Some background: I want to start developing games, and taking some of the advice given in this site, I've started with something simple and familiar, such as pong, tetris, etc. I want to take as much time as needed to make sure that I have the basics right before moving on to something bigger. I have medium programming experience but I realize making games is a different thing. I find myself wondering many things like should this be in a separate class? Should this module handle this stuff or is it better to let other modules have that kind of functionality? For example, the bouncing of a ball in pong, right now is handled in the ball module, but maybe it's better that some other module did it. Right now I have different modules: one for the graphics, one for the game logic, and others for the objects (depending on the kind of movement required, not all the objects are alike). I know I am asking a lot, any tips you have will be very much appreciated. Short question: What's the right or standard way of separating the modules? What have you found most effective? Is it enough to just keep the drawing (graphics) and the logic separate? Is it necessary to have a lot of classes? (for example for the objects in the game, to handle the movement, etc)

• Good practices when optimizing HTML5/Javascript Game Developement [closed]

  I'm just starting out as a game developer and have created a few crappy but playable clones of classic games like pong, and bomberman. Being self taught (bless the internet) I do this by just stuffing in code to make the games work. Now I feel the time has come to create something complete, for this I need to know how a game is structured. I've searched on the web but there isn't that much to be found. The only "high-level" language I know is javascript so reading a tutorial or article based on C++ doesn't help me that much. I'm looking for good resource's pedagogically covering the theory and possibly examples (in Javascript or pseudo code that is understandable for a beginner) of how the game pieces fit together. From the start screen to asset loading and running the game loop. I'm not looking for anything complicated like reading through a 4000 line source code. All I want to learn is where, how and when the main parts of every game should be called. If you know any good resources to share, or maybe even have an answer for me I would deeply appreciate it.
