• Localization as an afterthought-- screwed?

  So I signed on with a startup web development company as a subcontractor. They are putting together a large, complex user/product management system for a company that needs to support multiple levels of hierarchial localization. I signed a 3 month contract, and upon looking at their code, wish I hadn't. They opted to write their own MVC framework (I guess the client company didn't want to use a prewritten one) and it's extremely poorly written. There's SQL scattered throughout almost every model view and controller (and there's no parameter-based find methods, it's all SQL) and they haven't even THOUGHT about localization yet-- something that will have an affect on nearly EVERY query. The due date is 4 months away, and I honestly think we'd make good progress by scrapping the whole thing and going with CakePHP. Have any of you been in a similar situation, and what did you do? PS: This is written in PHP/MySQL.

• No method found compiler warning

  I have create a class from a string, check it is valid and then check if it responds to a particular method. If it does then I call the method. It all works fine, except I get an annoying compiler warning: "warning: no '-setCurrentID:' method found". Am I doing something wrong here? Is there anyway to tell the compiler all is ok and stop it reporting a warning? • How do I memoize expensive calculations on Django model objects?

  I have several TextField columns on my UserProfile object which contain JSON objects. I've also defined a setter/getter property for each column which encapsulates the logic for serializing and deserializing the JSON into python datastructures. The nature of this data ensures that it will be accessed many times by view and template logic within a single Request. To save on deserialization costs, I would like to memoize the python datastructures on read, invalidating on direct write to the property or save signal from the model object. Where/How do I store the memo? I'm nervous about using instance variables, as I don't understand the magic behind how any particular UserProfile is instantiated by a query. Is __init__ safe to use, or do I need to check the existence of the memo attribute via hasattr() at each read? • Making php-mode Compatible with Emacs 23

  I am using Emacs 23 and php-mode.el 1.5.0. When I have this in my .emacs: (require 'php-mode) I get this error message when Emacs starts: Warning (initialization): An error occurred while loading `/Users/kdj/.emacs': error: `c-lang-defconst' must be used in a file To ensure normal operation, you should investigate and remove the cause of the error in your initialization file. Start Emacs with the `--debug-init' option to view a complete error backtrace. If I evaluate (require 'php-mode) after Emacs starts, I don't get any error messages. I found a blog entry which indicates that this problem is specific to Emacs 23 (that is, there is no error with Emacs 22.x), but it doesn't give any solutions. Don't know if this matters, but I'm using Mac OS X, and I built Emacs from the current CVS sources, using ./configure --with-ns. Anybody know what's going on here, and/or how I can fix it?

  Firstly, sorry for my english. I´m brazilian guy that is improving yet. I want create a helper tag called "collection_cascading_select". That helper is similar to "collection_select", but he has one more argument called "source". The "source" is the other collection in the view. Ever that other option is select in the "source", a javascript function needs run to gets his value. Then populate the "collection_cascading_select" collection agreed of that value.   Given, when a user requests /foo on my server, I send the following HTTP response (not closing the connection): Content-Type: multipart/x-mixed-replace; boundary=----------------------- ----------------------- Content-Type: text/html <a href="/bar">foo</a> When the user clicks on foo (which will send 204 No Content so the view doesn't change), I want to send the following data in the initial response. ----------------------- Content-Type: text/html bar How would could I get the second request to trigger this from the initial response? I'm planning on possibly creating a fancy [engines that support multipart/x-mixed-replace (currently only Gecko)]-only email webapp that does server-push and Ajax effects without any JavaScript, just for fun.

• How to interpret trackpad pinch gestures to zoom IKImageBrowserView

  I have an IKImageBrowserView that I want to be able to pinch-zoom using a multi-touch trackpad on a recent Mac laptop. The Cocoa Event Handling Guide, in the section Handling Gesture Events says: The magnification accessor method returns a floating-point (CGFloat) value representing a factor of magnification ..and goes on to show code that adjusts the size of the view by multiplying height and width by magnification + 1.0. This doesn't seem to be the right approach for zooming IKImageBrowserView, whose zoomValue property is clamped between 0.0 and 1.0. So, does anyone know how to interpret the event in -[NSResponder magnifyWithEvent:] to zoom IKImageBrowserView?

• Using Mapkit to create a local searchable Map

  Using MapKit as a base, I'm planning on adding a map to a project with 'local search' capabilities. I think 'local search' describes the feature I want to design into the map. Here is my vision. The map is displayed on the bottom half of a view. The user's current location is highlighted by default. When the user pushes the 'search' button annotation pins drop onto the map. The search is programmatically fixed to a certain item....for example supermarkets. So supermarkets in a 5 mile radius of the user's current location will populate the map. How would I add this local search feature to the already amazing MapKit? I've learned an incredible amount as a new developer in the last few months, and look forward to learning googles...correction googols more. Thanks in anticipation.

  Hi, i'm having this issue, in ASP.NET MVC 2 where I'm adding a drop down list on the master page and filling it with data from an abstract master controller. When an option is selected an submit button clicked, it reroutes you to a new page. so lets say the page lives on http://domain.com/landingPage i'm on: http://domain.com/landingPage i select option and submit takes me to http://domain.com/landingPage/Projects/FramedPage i select again and now the post tries to go to: http://domain.com/landingPage/Projects/landingPage/Projects/FramedPage because of the action="" i have set on the form tag. Any ideas on how to go about this? • Display user name in reference to user id in django template

  I expect this is an easy question. For some reason, I don't have a solution yet. I have an object set from django reversion: version_list. Each object in the set has a user id attached to it. How do I grab the user names that correspond to the user ID's? To try to be clearer, if each object in version_list has a name, date, and user id, how can I join the version_list set with the user table to figure out what user id goes with which name? This is done in the view, or the template?

• When to choose LAMP over ASP.NET?

  Hello. A friend wants to start a dating website, she wants me to help her. We still haven't discussed on what platform it'll be developed, but I'm thinking she'll suggest LAMP to save a buck (which is one reason already to chose over ASP.NET already). If the dating website does well, it'll potentially hold a large amount of data (I'm not sure if this would be another reason to consider either ASP.NET or LAMP). Anyway, I ask this from an ASP.NET developer point of view. I have very little, almost null experience with LAMP, and I don't like it very much either, so if she decides to go with PHP odds are I won't help her. So what would be some good points to bring up when deciding which platform to develop on? Please be objective, I don't want this to be argumentative or anything, try to stick to facts, not opinions alone. Thanks!

But there is a issue as before clicking "Save and Send Invitations" button of Lotus notes 8.5, i am able to view the "RepeatForUnit" field from document property and based on its value i am identifying the Recurrence type like (D: for daily, W: for Weekly, M: for monthly etc). But, After clicking on the "Save and Send Invitations" button, the Recurrence is getting saved but after that, i am unable to get the "RepeatForUnit" field in Document Properties. Kindly help me, how to identify the Recurrence type and the related fields. Note: I am using Domino.dll using C#.

• Making large toolbars like the iPod app

  I am trying to create a toolbar programatically (rather than via IB) very similar to the toolbar featured in the iPhone app. Currently I've been experimenting with the UIToolbar class, but I'm not sure how (and if?) you can make the toolbar buttons centrally aligned and large like that in the iPod app. Additionally, regardless of size, the gradient/reflection artwork never correctly respects the size and is stuck as if the object is the default smaller size. If this cannot be done with a standard UIToolbar, I guess I need to create my own view. In this case, can the reflection/gradient be created programmatically or will it require some clever alpha tranparency Photoshopped artwork?

• Reviving a deleted file for use in my workspace

  Greetings We run perforce with several users. Each user has their own development website that shows files in their workspace. This is great for making and viewing changes to webpages before submitting them. Sometime ago, we deleted a few pages in Perforce. I would like to revive these pages, but not to make them visible on our live site. I want to view them in my workspace and on my dev site, but I do want to push them out to our live server. In the "depot" tab of my P4 client, I can see the deleted files. I cannot see them in the "Workspace" tab of my client. How can I revive them for use in my Workspace, but not make them live to the world? I'm not a P4 admin so I could use a little guidance. Thanks for any help,

  Hi Guys, I am using "malsups" jQuery corner plugin - http://jquery.malsup.com/corner/ - and having a bit of nightmare of a time with IE. Basically I have <ol><li> <span class="main"> <span class="test1"></span> <span class="test2"></span> <span class="test3"> <span id="test4"></span> <span id="special" class="special"> <span class="test4">TEXT</span> </span> </span> </li></ol> Basically, in IE when I try and make the id="special" have rounded corners - i get a distorted view. I think its something related to problems with referencing li elements using jQuery('#special').corner('5px'); Could anyone help :) ?

• Change UIImagePicker Navigation Bar style to blue

  All of my view has a blue navigation bar but when I want user to choose a photo, the UIImagePicker is black. I tried to set the navigation bar of UIImagePickerController to blue using UIBarStyleDefault but it does not work for me, the color is still black. I tried with other UIBarStyle like UIBarStyleBlack and UIBarStyleOpaque as well but it doesn't change the navigation bar of the picker anyway. Here is my code // Let the user choose a new photo. • Assigning to struct in different class

  I have a struct in ClassA and want to assign it to the same struct in ClassB (the two structs are the same with different names). ClassA and ClassB are view controllers. Basically, I need to pass this struct to another class. However, structs don't seem to be exposed as members, which means I can't access them. Here is ClassA's struct declared in its header file: typedef struct { NSString *startDate; NSString *endDate; NSString *classId; } selectedItemsClassAStruct; selectedItemsClassAStruct selectedItemsClassA; and the same for ClassB (just with ClassA text replaced) It doesn't appear in code hints for ClassB. I see this error if I try to access it: request for member 'selectedItemsClassBStruct' in something not a structure or union How should it be done?

• Simplest possible table entry editing / addition / deletion web toolkit (for use with php)

  Hi, i'm building a website in php and i have tables presented that i need to allow the user to: 1. add new entry (only one at a time, which should appear as a new modal overlay) 2. delete multiple selected entries from 3. edit an existing entry (only one at one time, in a view similar to 1.) 4. re-arrange entries up and down. One by one is fine. Multiple / Grouping rearrangements are not not needed what jquery / js / anything toolkit would be the SIMPLEST to work with? (of course, i should be able to work with it in php). I did try hacking away at: http://www.ericmmartin.com/projects/simplemodal/ but had a terrible time trying to get it to work on editing some existing data (had problem passing data to it).
