• Freenas 8 email setup

  I'm struggling with setting up email reporting in Freenas. My build is FreeNAS-8.0.4-RELEASE-x64 (10351). I have my IPv4 Default gateway set to 192.168.2.1 (my router) and Nameserver 1 as 8.8.8.8 (google's public). Under my email tab I have from email ***@gmail.com outgoing mail server smtp.google.com port to connect to 465 tls/ssl SSL use smtp auth checked username ***@gmail.com password **** I then went into accounts and changed the root email to ***@gmail.com. When I try and send a test email, I get Your test email could not be sent: timed out So what am I doing wrong?

• Remembering September 11 - 11 Years Later

  It's September 11 again and time to reminisce about that fateful day when the world came together as one. The attacks of that day touched everyone around the world as almost 3000 people from the United States and 38 other countries were killed. This year, I am finding it difficult to say anything other than what I have said in previous years. So, I will not try to "wax loquacious." Instead, I will simply say that I will never forgot. I will not forget where I was on that day. I will not forgot the people who died. I will not forget the people who gave their lives so that others might live. And I will not forget how our world changed on that day. And with that remembrance, we again return to our lives, using tragedy to drive us to build a world of peace and opportunity. My thanks go out again to the men and women, uniformed or not, who continue to protect us from harm. May we never again experience such human tragedy, on U.S. soil or elsewhere.

• Updating Banshee to 2.4

  I have banshee 2.2.1 with Ubuntu 11.10 I have been trying to update banshee to 2.4 (released yesterday) but it just isnt working, I have been using sudo add-apt-repository ppa:banshee-team/ppa in terminal, from the Banshee.fm website. but after running through terminal it says this: sudo add-apt-repository ppa:banshee-team/ppa You are about to add the following PPA to your system: PPA for Banshee Team This PPA contains the latest stable debs of Banshee for Ubuntu. To install Banshee, you must first enable the PPA on your system: 1. Open Software Sources (System->Administration->Software Sources) 2. Navigate to the "Third Party Sources" tab. 3. Click "Add" 4. Enter the APT line below that corresponds to your Ubuntu version that starts with "deb". 5. Click "Add Source" 6. Click "Close" 7. It will prompt you to reload your software cache. Click "Reload". 8. Now install the package "banshee" from Synaptic, or using the command below: sudo apt-get install banshee For those who wish to compile from trunk, add the deb-src line and then run "sudo apt-get build-dep" to install all required dependencies before starting to compile. • How to set up dual quadro cards on RHEL 5.5?

  I have a RHEL 5 workstation with 2 nvidia Quadro FX4500 cards, with one display attached to each card. After doing a clean install of RHEL 5.5, the second display doesnt work (it worked ok in RHEL 5.2). Neither separate X screens nor Xinerama are working. The kernel version is 2.6.18-194.el5 I've tried nvidia drivers 185.18.36 (the ones that i was using on 5.2) and the latest 260.19.36 and neither works. • The Cloud is STILL too slow!

  If you've been in the computing industry sufficiently long enough to remember dialup modems and other "ancient" technologies, you might be tempted to marvel at today's wonderfully powerful multicore PCs, ginormous disks, and blazingly fast networks.  Wow, you're in Internet Nirvana, right!  Well, no, not by a long shot.Considering the exponentially growing expectations of what the Web, that is, "the Cloud", is supposed to provide, today's Web/Cloud services are still way too slow.Already we are seeing cloud-enabled consumer devices that are stressing even the most advanced public network services.  Like the iPad and its competitors, ever more powerful smart-phones, and an imminent hoard of special purpose gadgets such as the proposed "cloud camera" (see http://gdgt.com/discuss/it-time-cloud-camera-found-out-cnr/ ).And at the same time that the number and type of cloud services are growing, user tolerance for even the slightest of download delays is rapidly decreasing.  Ten years ago Web developers followed the "8-Second Rule", (average time a typical Web user would tolerate for a page to download and render).  Not anymore; now it's less than 3 seconds, and only a bit longer for mobile devices (see http://www.technologyreview.com/files/54902/GoogleSpeed_charts.pdf).  How spoiled we've become!Google, among others, recognizes this problem and is working to encourage the development of a faster Web (see http://www.technologyreview.com/web/32338/). They, along with their competitors and ISPs, will have to encourage and support significantly better Web performance in order to provide the types of services envisioned for the Cloud.  How will they do this? Through the development of faster components, better use of caching technologies, and the really tough one - exploiting parallelism. Not that parallel technologies like multicore processors are hard to build...we already have them.  It's just that we're not that good yet at using them effectively.  And if we don't get better, users will abandon cloud-based services...in less than 3 seconds.

  I was recently installing Microsoft Windows SDK for Windows 7 and .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 to create my build server on a VM (Windows 2003 R2 Std), I was wondering that it would be nice to specify the temporary folder for the files being extracted by MSI for use during the installation. This should ideally work for any MSIs. I have some more virtual hard disks I have attached to this VMs, to point the temporary folder for MSI to one of these virtual hard disks would be quite productive since I can remove/discard this virtual hard disk later. Compacting the C drive VHD is a pain, and does not always reclaim space correctly. I tried changing the %temp% and tmp environment variable with no effect? • Technical development decision for my newly established software company

  I have a new software company where I am planning to develop CRM system. So I have settled down on the technological approach I am going to use:- I will use an open source Java-based CRM engine. I will use a third party reporting tool named JasperReports for providing reports capabilities for the CRM. I will develop the interface and any customization which the customer might ask for using asp.net mvc framework since my knowledge and experience are based on asp.net. And I will use the CRM API to integrate my asp.net web application with the Java-based CRM. I have developed a simple demo which integrate these three main components (CRM engine, asp.net application and the reporting tool) and they worked well. But I am afraid of the following risk that I might face if I go with the above approach: I should hire developers with different skills and experience: Developers with Java skills to be able to modify the Java-based CRM and writing plug-ins -when needed- to extend the CRM capabilities. Other developers with asp.net skills to be able to build the application such as application forms, the portal from where users will be able to start the CRM processes, searching capabilities, etc. So might the above point raise some risks when I start hiring a new team and start building the CRM application, OR I am on the right track at this early stage?

• IIS7 folder permissions

  I build a basic WCF service that I now want to host in IIS7 under Windows Server 2008 R2. I added the service as an application under the default web site but whenever i try to run the application I get the following error: HTTP Error 500.19 - Internal Server Error The requested page cannot be accessed because the related configuration data for the page is invalid. Config Error - Cannot read configuration file due to insufficient permissions The only way I can get this service working is if i choose to "connect as" the server Administrator when adding the service. the "application user (pass-through authentication)" option does not seem to work. Could anyone help me out, I've just started using IIS7 and have no idea what to do... Thanks

  Direct Question: I want to enable Perl to send emails. What package(s) should I install to setup a simplistic email server: no need for incoming, only outgoing. I can forward through gmail's SMTP if that's best? Background: I am programmer with a nightly build script written in Perl. I would like to email myself the results of my nightly builds (especially if there's an error). I've read about the perl package Mail::Sendmail briefly, but if something else is more appropriate, please tell me!! I tried the simple aptget install sendmail, but that doesn't seem to work. • Choosing a web development framework?

  So, I've sort of reached a point where I want to start developing a website. Originally, I planned to build said website using PHP and CodeIgniter, I'm familiar with both, but, truth be told, I'm not too fond of either. I find they just get rather messy, CodeIgniter helps somewhat, but no matter what, it seems that most PHP comes out more obfuscated than it has to be. Anyways, I've come to the point where I want to either use Python or Ruby. I'm familiar in both, though more so towards Python, but I've never done any web development in them. I'll take the necessary time to learn the frameworks (and further my knowledge in the language of my choosing), but I need to choose one. I don't like either language more than the other, they both have their benefits... However, since I've never done any web development with either language, I was hoping that you guys could give me some pointers. What are the available frameworks for each language? What do you recommend and why? Note: I've primarily looked into Rails and Django - but I'm still open to others. I'm looking for one that will work for just one (or maybe two) developers. It has to be fairly easy to learn (but I will take the time to learn it). Also, I'd like it to easily support clean code and agile development.

  Okay this explanation is a bit longer ... but I start at the beginning: I've been using Windows 7 for a very long time, shortly after the release of v12.10 I installed Ubuntu via Windows installer. Everything worked fine but the fan of the graphics card. After a bit of research I found out, that I just had to select a different driver (nvidia-current (proprietary, tested) worked pretty well). This also fixed some graphical bugs when I just logged into my account. Due to my university I got a MSDNAA-Account (allows me to download every Windows OS for free). I downloaded and installed Windows 8. After configuration I installed ubuntu via the Windows installer once again and the first couple launches of ubuntu went well. Suddenly ubuntu didn't launched anymore...caused by some hard-disk errors and had no clue what to do. So I kept working on Windows 8 - unfortunately. After playing around with the new Windows, I put my PC to sleep-mode. I couldn't wake my PC up and it wasn't responding to anything (neither mouse-movement, -clicks or keyboard strokes, nor the power-button and the reset-button worked), so I pulled the plug. Turns out, this was a huge mistake. Somehow the BIOS broke and after restarting a couple of times, the BIOS repaired itself. Neither Windows 8, nor ubuntu where bootable. Now I had to install ubuntu several times, because after rebooting unity was hidden and I didn't know what the problem was and how to fix it. I finally realized that this problem was caused by the graphics card driver, which I've changed to the nvidia-current (This dirver worked fine before my PC "crashed"). So I installed Windows 8 again and after a bit of usage I installed ubuntu once again (via DVD). The booting of ubuntu and windows works fine - so far. But I'm still not able to change the graphics card driver without unity hiding away after restarting the OS. The noisy fan is really disturbing my work... • Editing tags in bunch of MP3 files?

  I have a bunch of files whose filename looks like "<Track> - <Title> - <Artist>.mp3". I'd like to rewrite their MP3 Title tag to be "<Track> - <Title>.mp3" so that each song is displayed correctly on my elcheapo MP3 player. Since I rarely edit MP3 files anyway, MP3 Tag Tools 1.2 Build 008 from 2003 was good enough, but I can't figure out how to do this with this application. I just tried MP3Tag 2.46, but couldn't figure out if it can do this (created a new Action, to no avail). I also tried TagScanner 5.1.558, without success. Does someone know of a good, free Windows application that can do this? Thank you.

• How to cope with runaway Flash plugin in Google Chrome browser?

  I'm using Google Chrome for Linux, version 5.0.307.11 (Official Build 39572) beta with the Linux Flash plugin version 10.0 r32. Quite often, the Flash plugin goes wild and pegs the CPU with about 95% usage. Laptop gets hot, battery drains. I can diagnose the problem with Chrome's little process monitor (shift-Esc), and I can even kill the plugin, but then when I actually want to use Flash on a page, I can't find a way to restart the plugin; I have to exit and restart Chrome, which with 30 tabs open is a huge hit. Does anyone know what causes this problem? Does anyone have a better workaround (or heaven forfend, a fix)? [I struct out both with search and with Google's help site for Chrome.]

• How to learn & introduce scrum in small startup?

  In a few months, a friend will establish his startup software company, and I will be the software architect with one additional developer. Though we have no real day-to-day experience with agile methods, I have read much "overview" type of material on them, and I firmly believe they are a good - if not the only - way to build software. So with this company, I want to go for iterative, agile development from day 1, preferably something light-weight. I was thinking of Scrum, but the question is: what is the best way for me and my colleagues to learn about it, to introduce it (which techniques when etc) and to evaluate whether we should keep it? Background which might be relevant: we're all experienced developers around the same age with similar professional mindset. We have worked together in the past and afterwards at several different companies, mostly with a Java/.NET focus. Some are a bit familiar with general ideas from the agile movement. In this startup, I have great power over tools, methods and process. The startup's product will be developed from scratch and could be classified as middleware. We have some "customer" contacts in the industry who could provide input as soon as we get to an alpha stage.

• Whatsup gold reporting

  I work for an IT consulting company, and we use WhatsUp Gold to monitor our and our clients' servers. WUG works, and provides all the data we need in a reasonably useful format. However, management wants to use it as a sales tool. They want more attractive reports that they can hand off to clients and prospective clients to show off how slick our monitoring software is. Is there a third-party solution that will generate more attractive reports based on data in the WUG database? I have already suggested using reporting services to build our own reports, but that idea was rejected.

  In 1969 the Honeywell corporation released a $10,000 kitchen computer that weighed 100 pounds, was as big as a table, and required advanced programming skills to use. • Does anyone provide a Skype connection service?

  Is there a way of offering Skype access to incoming calls while keeping all telephony traffic over our chosen business telephony provision? Is there a 3rd party who can route incoming Skype calls to our telephone system? The business has had requests from contacts wanting to call us via Skype, but we want to keep all telephony via our PBX and phone lines as our geographic location limits our available internet bandwidth. We also prevent installation of non-standard applications on desktops and do not want to add Skype to our build. I was wondering if there were any 3rd parties that provide a connection service that would allow our contacts to call via Skype and us receive the calls via our phone system.

• Sound does not work on the administrator profile.Works on a non-administrator profile on Windows XP

  Initially I suspected a missing driver, but then sound ( for movies,songs etc ) works fine on the other non-administrator account, but does not work when I log in to the Administrator account. And yes..I have checked the sound volume and mute status as well. • IIS 8 Random 503 service unavailable

  We migrated a busy website to Windows Server 2012 with IIS 8. The website randomly gives the error "503 service unavailable" after an user presses F5 the error is gone again. The website is build in ASP.NET MVC 3. The website runs on one application pool, with default settings There are around 500 to 900 concurrent users on the website during the day, and the error happens more often when there are more 650 users. The CPU and the memory use on the server is stable. There is nothing about the 503 errors in the application log, the IIS log and the event log. Does anyone has any clue what the problem can be or how we can trace the the problem?

• Can a Printer Print White?

  The vast majority of the time we all print on white media: white paper, white cardstock, and other neutral white surfaces. But what about printing white? Can modern printers print white and if not, why not? Read on as we explore color theory, printer design choices, and why white is the foundation of the printing process. The Question SuperUser reader Curious_Kid is well, curious, about printers. He writes: I was reading about different color models, when this question hit my mind. Can the CMYK color model generate white color? Printers use CMYK color mode. What will happen if I try to print a white colored image (rabbit) on a black paper with my printer? Will I get any image on the paper? Does the CMYK color model have room for white? The Answer SuperUser contributor Darth Android offers some insight into the CMYK process: You will not get anything on the paper with a basic CMYK inkjet or laser printer. The CMYK color mixing is subtractive, meaning that it requires the base that is being colored to have all colors (i.e., White) So that it can create color variation through subtraction: White - Cyan - Yellow = Green White - Yellow - Magenta = Red White - Cyan - Magenta = Blue White is represented as 0 cyan, 0 yellow, 0 magenta, and 0 black – effectively, 0 ink for a printer that simply has those four cartridges. This works great when you have white media, as “printing no ink” simply leaves the white exposed, but as you can imagine, this doesn’t work for non-white media. If you don’t have a base color to subtract from (i.e., Black), then it doesn’t matter what you subtract from it, you still have the color Black. [But], as others are pointing out, there are special printers which can operate in the CMYW color space, or otherwise have a white ink or toner. These can be used to print light colors on top of dark or otherwise non-white media. You might also find my answer to a different question about color spaces helpful or informative. Given that the majority of printer media in the world is white and printing pure white on non-white colors is a specialty process, it’s no surprise that home and (most) commercial printers alike have no provision for it.
