• I can see markup characters in vim `:help`

  I just created a .txt file inside .vim/doc for documenting one little function of my .vimrc, ran :helptags ~/.vim/doc and apparently the whole vim help system went wild. Now, if I open for example :help help, I see things like: This also works together with other characters, for example to find help for CTRL-V in Insert mode: > :help i^V < (notice the < and characters). I can also see the ~ at the end of headlines and the modeline at the end of the help page (thinks like vim:tw=78:ts=8:ft=help:norl:). I have no idea about what happens or how to fix it. Any clue? • cisco vpn and on demand routing

  We need to connect to a partner via a Cisco VPN from one of our internal servers. This server is already configured for demand dial routing to a different partner, using windows RRAS. The partner provided us the group authentication credentials and the regular logon credentials. Basically, I need to configure it so that when this server needs to access a specific host it will automatically establish the vpn connection and route that specific traffic to them. How can I do this? I've installed the Cisco VPN Client (5.0.07.0440) on the server and I can open it up and connect. However, I'm stuck on how to configure this to automatically happen.

• How does Amazon ec2-user get its sudo rights

  I am looking for where the default Amazon AMI linux image sets up the privileges for the default ec2-user account. After logging in with this account I can use sudo successfully. Checking via the sudoers file, which I open by running visudo (with no other options) I see a few default settings and permissions for root ALL ALL So ... Where is the permissions for ec2-user assigned? I have not yet tried to add a new permission but ultimately I want to resign ec2-user for systems management tasks and use a non-full root user for administering the applications (stop and start mysql, httpd, edit apache's vhost files, and upload / edit web content under the web root)

• Laptop forgets second monitor when it goes to sleep

  I recently updated my nvidia driver... now I have to re-establish the connection to my second monitor everytime the laptop goes to sleep. When I open the NVIDIA control panel, the second monitor is listed there but the checkbox beside it has been cleared. Oddly my laptop screen is identified as display #3 and the external screen as display #4. Is there a registry key that I can clear to get them set back to #1 & #2? Will that fix the problem? Or is there a simpler solution. (It's a Dell Studio XPS laptop with GeForce 9500M running Windows Vista 64-bit) TIA Al

• Windows Software to Save Arbitrary Application State

  VM software does a great job of saving state when you "turn it off," allowing instant and immediate return to that previous state. Is there some application for Windows that allows me to do the same thing, for any arbitrary software? It would allow me to save/restore state, possibly via a shell command or button that it appends to every window. Edit: For clarity, there are two types of apps: those that save their own states, and those that save others' states. Those that save their own state are like Chrome, which on load, reloads the windows you had open last time. That's not what I'm asking about; I'm asking for an app that can save the state of other apps, kind of like VM software does; but for any app. (A trivial test would be load notepad++, type a bunch of stuff, and save-state; on reset-state, you should be able to multi-level undo a lot of what you wrote, as if you never shut down the application.)

  "Deshaking" means fixing the video captured from camera hold in hands. Is there open source video deshaker apart from y4mstabilizer from mjpegtools? Patch for mencoder is preferred. • Internet connection issues after installing Windows Phone 8 SDK

  first of all I must admit, that I'm not good in all this network stuff. I am using Windows 8 OS. On my laptop (Lenovo G570) I have installed Windows Phone 8 SDK and shortly after this I started having weird issues with internet connection. When I start my laptop, internet usually works fine, but after a few minutes it starts slowing down so much, that I'm not able to open a single page. Rebooting doesn't work, after several disabling and enabling network adapter, it usually works again for a few minutes and then again it stops. I'm sure it has something to do with Windows Phone 8 SDK, because problems started with this. With SDK there was also installed "vEthernet (Internal Ethernet Port Windows Phone Emulator Internal Switch)" network adapter. It is worth to note that problems occur mostly in my school network, not at home. Both at home and school I am using Wi-Fi connection. I hope the information given are enough to help me. • Files beginning with "._"

  Sometimes when my wife works on photos in Photoshop on her Mac, what she gives me back are all the photos I took, with their .jpg extensions in place, as well as a set of "ghost" files. That is, for every photo, there is an evil twin whose file name is the same ... except that it begins with "._". Also this ghost file are sort of "grayed-out" and don't open when double clicked. I suspect they are hidden files, (I have set windows to show all hidden files) but what find of hidden file -- on that, I'm clueless. I just delete these files and never have a problem with the photo (.jpg) files, but still I'm dying to know; what are they? Thanks

• SSH and Latent Connections (e.g., satellite connections)

  Most of the week I live in the city where I have a typical broadband connection, but most weekends I'm out of town and only have access to a satellite connection. Trying to work over SSH on a satellite connection, while possible, is hardly desirable due to the high latency ( 1 second). My question is this: Is there any software that will do something like buffering keystrokes on my local machine before they're sent over SSH to help make the lag on individual keystrokes a little bit more transparent? Essentially I'm looking for something that would reduce the effects of the high latency for everything except for commands (e.g., opening files, changing to a new directory, etc.). I've already discovered that vim can open remote files locally and rewrite them remotely, but, while this is a huge help, it is not quite what I'm looking for since it only works when editing files, and requires opening a connection every time a read/write occurs. (For anyone who may not know how to do this and is curious, just use this command: 'vim scp://host/file/path/here)

• Getting back the old alt-tab windows switching behavior in Windows 7?

  When you run more than 6 applications on Windows 7 and you press alt-TAB, icons representing the first 6 applications and the desktop appear on the first row of the grid and you can cycle with alt-TAB-TAB... through the 6 most recently used windows the usual way, but the 7th and other less recently used windows don't follow the same rules. Instead they get grouped together according to their application but disregarding whether they were recently used or not. This new behavior is mentioned here. I am very used to the old way of cycling and the new system is driving me crazy. I tend to have 20 or so windows open at one time and I frequently need to alt-tab to the 7th or 8th window on the stack but it doesn't work the same anymore. Does anyone know how to put back the old behavior, so that alt-tab-tab-tab... goes through the whole list in most-recent to least-recent order?

• Getting a Cross-Section from Two CSV Files

  I have two CSV files that I am working with. One is massive, with about 200,000 rows. The other is much smaller, having about 12,000 rows. Both fit the same format of names, and email addresses (everything is legit here, no worries). Basically I'm trying to get only a subset of the second list by removing all values that presently exist in the larger file. So, List A has ~200k rows, and List B has ~12k. These lists overlap a bit, and I'd like to remove all entries from List B if they also exist in List A, leaving me with new and unique values only in List B. I've got a few tooks at my disposal that I can use. Open Office is loaded on this machine, along with MySQL (queries are alright). What's the easiest way to create a third CSV with the intersection of data?

• How do I log file system read/writes by filename in Linux?

  I'm looking for a simple method that will log file system operations. It should display the name of the file being accessed or modified. I'm familiar with powertop, and it appears this works to an extent, in so much that it show the user files that were written to. Is there any other utilities that support this feature. Some of my findings: powertop: best for write access logging, but more focused on CPU activity iotop: shows real time disk access by process, but not file name lsof: shows the open files per process, but not real time file access iostat: shows the real time I/O performance of disk/arrays but does not indicate file or process

• Unable to access my own websites from our home

  Not sure if this is the right place to ask, but i'm gonna have a shot at it. I host a couple of websites with a webhost in the Netherlands. For a couple of days now, i've been unable to connect to them from my home network. When using tracert in the cmd screen, i'm getting a timeout after about 4-5 hops. It seems fine accessing the website from anywhere, except my home network. Other PC's around the house also fail to open the websites. I've tried 'flushing my DNS' as seen in some other topics, but to no avail just yet. One of the websites: http://bit.ly/1hbqs4J I've contacted my host about it as well, but no response yet. • Simple CMS (separate files for multiple users) [closed]

  I need a simple CMS software (or maybe it's called something else). There are many users (adding new users has to be simple as it will be done manually, no "sign up" link) and those users have to access (just download, no uploading or modification) some files. A file can be shown just to one user or a group of users (a user can belong to multiple groups). Upload a file and tag which users/groups can access it. This can probably be done with FTP, but HTTP would be better. Any software (preferable open source) that can do this without much modification? I can modify PHP code a bit, but I am not a programmer.

(provider:Named Pipes Provider, error:40 - Could not open a connection to SQL server." This probably should be a problem with the server configuration but I have no ideia how to solve this... • Exchange server listening on port 25 but clients dont recieve emails

  My exchange server is listening on port 25, that is I can telnet into it and send an email but Outlook 2010/2007, OWA, and ActiveSync are not pulling down emails. Outlook 2010 specifically says Connected To Exchange Server and Updating Inbox but it never updates the inbox. Also, OWA shows some of the newer mail messages, but when I double click on one to open it up in OWA, it times out. Any idea what could be causing this? Also Exchange Transport and Information Store are started. Thanks!

• My HP ProBook 4520s running Windows 7 hangs intermittently

  I have not been able to trace a consistent cause, but a few times a day my laptop will hang for up to about a minute. I can still move the cursor which displays as the wait icon for whatever application I was last in, but cannot carry out any other actions. Unfortunately I can't Ctrl+Alt+Del to bring up a task manager and I just have to wait. I can't pin it down to a particular application either, but generally I have either office apps, a browser or other tools open. I'm tempted to think it may be network timeout on something, as I can't think of anything else which would delay for that long with such a significant impact, but as I'm more a Unix person I thought it would be worth asking here.

• How to collect figures of traffic used per-host, broken up by time and destination?

  We have a relatively small network, all PSs in one subnet. One PC with two NICs and pfSense installed works as a firewall/router. There is an OpenVPN tunnel to a remote location, created as a site-to-site connection to another pfSense box there. I have an assignment to capture, store and show (via a web interface) information on traffic generated (both incoming and outcoming) by each host on our subnet and present it in several views: megabytes per calendar hours / days / months / years (that is, not just "one month back", but "in Dec 2010" and so on); megabytes per destination: VPN to remote location / other destinations / Google Apps servers. I tried the software packages in pfSense that offer traffic montoring - but it seems they don't store the information fixed by months, instead showing the amounts of traffic generated in periods (days/months/etc) calculated from the present moment. I'm also interested in understanding what would be the best way for me to break up traffic by hosts and destinations. I'm open to all suggestions, even if they mean that I will have to understand something new to me.

• Why my browsers display XML files as blank pages?

  Every time I open an XML file, all I get is blank page instead of tag tree. The file itself is correct and loads okay, I can see it via View Source or in the Firebug. I've tried turning off all my addons and tried running Firefox in safe mode, but the problem was not solved. I'm guessing that I've messed up my configuration somehow and Firefox now tries to render XML files as HTML ones. I've tried googling, but with no success. Help, please?   I would like to set a network connection as metered. I can't find how to do this; it seems to have changed in the upgrade from Windows 8 to 8.1. I tried following the steps in the official metered connection FAQ. However, when I open the connection, there is no Data Usage heading nor a Set as a metered connection option. I tried this on two different computers, both running Windows 8.1. I also tried doing this for both wireless and ethernet adaptors. Here's what the connection screen looks like.   I can open a cmd window and start a tail by entering something like this: tail -f C:\Oracle\WebCenter\Sites\11gR1\Sites\11.1.1.6.1\logs\sites.log This is probably a stupid question, but how do I do this in a batch file? It should be easy but it's not working - I have tried a couple variations and no success. Can anyone tell me what I am doing wrong here?
