• MODX based site has been compromised, and tagged by Google as malware

  I'm the webmaster (inherited the site from the developer) for a site called kenbrook.org. The site is currently being tagged as malware infected by Google, and gives the following details: http://www.google.com/safebrowsing/diagnostic?site=kenbrook.org Sadly, this is the second time it has occurred. I posted the issue when it happened last year originally on Stackoverflow on this post, shortly after I inherited the site. At the time the fix was a simple removal of a few lines of code from a .js file, but I never did discover or resolve the vulnerability. The site is built on MODX, which neither I, nor the original builder, have any familiarity with. I've tried to check for security updates from MODX, but updating that software has been a real pain also. Sooo...what's my next step to getting this whole issue resolved? Or steps?

• Shopping cart for service providers?

  From my limited exposure, it seems to me that most shopping cart/eCommerce platforms are specifically for products-based retailers. On several occasions now, I've been asked about ecommerce solutions for service providers. That is, it's basically just a single product with payment but no shipping, and highly configurable "product". Any recommendations for a cost-efficient solution (high feature coverage) for such a web platform? Requirements: .NET No/suppressed product catalog A service customization selection form Payment (probably PayPal with accountless credit card processing) Guest purchases (no site account required) Email confirmation Customer service -facing control panel It's hard to search for such a product because I get "web service based ecommerce software" and so on clouding up the results.

• Studies on code documentation productivity gains/losses

  Hi everyone, After much searching, I have failed to answer a basic question pertaining to an assumed known in the software development world: WHAT IS KNOWN: Enforcing a strict policy on adequate code documentation (be it Doxygen tags, Javadoc, or simply an abundance of comments) adds over-head to the time required to develop code. BUT: Having thorough documentation (or even an API) brings with it productivity gains (one assumes) in new and seasoned developers when they are adding features, or fixing bugs down the road. THE QUESTION: Is the added development time required to guarantee such documentation offset by the gains in productivity down-the-road (in a strictly economical sense)? I am looking for case studies, or answers that can bring with them objective evidence supporting the conclusions that are drawn. Thanks in advance!

• Community Day at SOS Kinderdorf Bambous

  Easter is not only an occassion of public holidays but an opportunity to share and celebrate with your neighborhood. The team of IOS Indian Ocean Software Ltd. spent Easter Monday with the children and "mothers" of SOS Children's Village in Bambous. Together with the employees' family members we enjoyed some wonderful hours together. Starting the community day with a common lunch, IOS contributed mainly stationery, educational gifts and games like Scrabble or Sudoku. And of course, a little give-away with chocolate eggs... The kids are aged between 5 and 18 years. They live together with their village mothers in so-called family houses. The SOS Kinderdorf in Bambous is quite new and started their operations back in 2003, with an official inauguration in May 2005. Actually, I'm really happy about this event and I am looking forward to IOS next community activity.   I'm trying to setup github-pages on my Ubuntu laptop, and following the guide provided by Github I have to install the bundler package; giving the command ~$ gem install bundler returns me this error. ERROR: While executing gem ... (Gem::Exception) Unable to require openssl, install OpenSSL and rebuild ruby (preferred) or use non-HTTPS sources Then I have installed OpenSSL, launched the command to update software and stuff and tried again to install bundler, but the error kept showing. How can I fix this? Is there any specific command to rebuild ruby making it aware about the fact that openSSL is now installed?

• Linux repository contains latest tools for synaptic

  I'm using backTrack5R3. And I 've installed Synaptic as well as ubuntu Software center. Synaptic is very easy to use and gives wide range of details for the packages that I'm going to download. But the problem is it lack of lot of new files and information. Like vlc or adobe reader. The latest stable version of vlc is 2.0. but synaptic only installs, 1.1. And it don't find adobe. I would like to get new versions of them. What is the best way/source to update new files? EDIT: I mean after performing update & upgrade synaptic still contains vlc 1.0.6 which is outdated. I'm looking for a way to get new/best source.

  There are two Ubuntu PCs called A and B. A and B are connected to the Internet using two separated Internet connections. (In my case, two mobile broadband connections ppp0 x2 ) Each connection has a unique & static public IP address. What I need is to control A computer's cursor, using B computer's mouse, over the Internet. In both computers, I have allowed other users to control my computer in Desktop Sharing preferences, as below: When I try to connect to A from the B using Remmina Remote Desktop Client, it refuses to connect after trying for a while. These are my settings: I expect this to be done from an available open source software, not from TeamViewer. I found this guide harder to understand. Please provide me clear instructions... • Future-proofing myself when learning to program.

  I want to learn to program in a 'future-proof' manner, if you like. Whilst Windows dominates the desktop OS marketplace (for now), obviously there is a lot of value in learning its languages/frameworks/API's and so on - this might be subject to change as new devices emerge or Windows shoots itself in the foot (over-friendly previews of Windows 8 don't look too appealing...). Would I be right in thinking that having a solid knowledge of C/C++ for back-end logic/low level programming and the like, combined with an extremely portable language like Java for GUI's and so on, would be a good basis for software development that will prove useful on the most amount of systems? - I'm talking desktop PC's, tablets, phones.

  I'm developing a software to program a device. I have some commands like Reset, Read_Version, Read_memory, Write_memory, Erase_memory. Reset and Read_Version are fixed. They don't need parameters. Read_memory and Erase_memory need the same parameters that are Length and Address. Write_memory needs Lenght, Address and Data. For each command, I have the same steps in sequence, that are something like this sendCommand, waitForResponse, treatResponse. I'm having difficulty to identify which pattern should I use. Factory, Template Method, Strategy or other pattern.

• Is it possible to use Google Analytics to track file downloads?

  It's always bothered me that Google Analytics (and similar embedded web traffic monitoring services) can only see a reflection of the traffic going to my server and can only see page visits since it depends on the browser executing a Javascript snippet. If I want to track real downloads of a software package (ZIP file), there's no way Google Analytics can possibly tell me that because its javascript can't be attached to a ZIP file. Is there a way I can upload my log files to Google so that the pointy-haired boss can see downloads of our ZIP/PDF/BIN files and not just visits to the download page?

A popular CMS that could be up to date over the next 3 or 4 years. I took a look at Drupal 7. • Using an actor model versus a producer-consumer model?

  I'm doing some early-stage research towards architecting a new software application. Concurrency and multithreading will likely play a significant part, so I've been reading up on the various topics. The producer-consumer model, at least how it is expressed in Java, has some surface similarities but appears to be deeply dissimilar to the actor model in use with languages such as Erlang and Scala. I'm having trouble finding any good comparative data, or specific reasons to use or avoid the one or the other. Is the actor model even possible with Java or C#, or do you have do use one of the languages built for the purpose? Is there a third way?

• Decrease mouse sensitivity below the standard limit.

  I've got a USB mouse attached to my Ubuntu notebook. This mouse is (unfortunately) really sensitive, and so it sometimes gets hard to hit small icons with the mouse pointer. This is really a hardware issue, it's not a bug and it's not Ubuntu's/gnome's fault. Still, I would very much like to this issue through software (solving through hardware would imply buying a new mouse). Back in Windows, if I set the sensitivity as really low it was comfortable enough. In Ubuntu, even the lowest sensitivity and acceleration available (in the SystemPrerencesMouse menu) is still frustrating. How can I decrease it below the default minimum? I tried xset, but it seems xset only deals with acceleration and threshold, but not actual sensitivity.

• Why ISO master (editor) does not read Windows images

  I have the followjng problem with ISO master software: I try to edit WIndows 7 ISO image $ isomaster windows7.iso The file does open, unfortunately all I get is README with message: This disc contains a "UDF" file system and requires an operating system that supports the ISO-13346 "UDF" file system specification. isomaster comes form Ubuntu repository, I am using 12.04. The system has kernel support for UDF installed, I can mount above ISO (mount -o loop) and see its content read only. Any idea how to fix it? Using other than isomaster tool is also an option. The program comes up but the webcam area is black. I am running Unity 2D on a T42 Thinkpad. All programs similar to Cheese recognize my webcam as does Skype, but I really like Cheese and the error message may be ominous for other software failures.

  There was a joke going round a few months(?) ago that if the GM industry kept up with the computer industry that we'd all be better off (in relation to driving and costs). There was also a counter joke that if Microsoft made Cars you would, for example, have to squeeze the wing mirror, honk the horn and move the gearstick the reboot the car (CTRL + ALT + DEL) This got me thinking in terms of Apple's recent iPad 2 release, if Apple made cars what would they be like? What sort of technological advancements would software developers and programmers be able to implement if you built a car in a similar fashion to building an iPhone app. Xcode is you Mechanics garage, as it were. What would a car look like if it was designed by Apple Chief of Design: Jonothan Ive?
