  • Specific 'boot file' definition

    Hey, I have been given a general explanation of how a computer boots up. However a very loose definition to the term 'boot file' was given. Could someone explain 'boot file' to me in a very simple but concise manner? I have read about the POST, the clearing of registers, BIOS in the CMOS, etc. What I understand is that the boot file is different to the boot program. the boot program gets the system ready to accept an OS while the boot file contains some of the parameters by which the system will operate. The boot program is stored on ROM and the boot file isnt? cheers, jazz

    My input is a long list of files located on an Amazon S3 server. I'd like to download the metadata of the files, compute the hashes of the local files, and compare the metadata hash with the local files' hash. Currently, I use a loop to start all the metadata downloads asynchronously, then as each completes, compute MD5 on the local file if needed and compare. I'd rather process them in the order that they complete so that I get them faster. The MD5 calculation is long and synchronous. I tried making it async but the process locked up. I think that the MD5 task was added to the end of .Net's task list and it didn't get to run until all the downloads completed. Ideally, I process the response as they arrive, not in order, and the MD5 is asynchronous but gets a chance to run. Try specifying the type arguments explicitly. I need to filter the first result by COLUMN_B, but I don't know how. Is there a way to filter it?

I'm trying to determine if I should create my own event handling system using the Java EventObject with custom listeners similar to Java AWT Or should I use a JMS implementation? I was considering either apache's Qpid or ActiveMQ solution. I'm exploring these options at the moment and was wondering if anyone has experience with Qpid or ActiveMQ and can offer some advise (e.g., pros, cons to consider, etc) Also, if anyone has any suggestions for building a simple event handling system... if it's even worth while to consider this over a JMS based solution.

    Hi, assume that I have the following code fragment operation1(); bw.close(); operation2(); When I call BufferedReader.close() from my code, I am assuming my JVM makes a system call that ensures that the buffer has been flushed and written to disk. I want to know if close() waits for the system call to complete its operation or does it proceed to operation2() without waiting for close() to finish. To rephrase my question, when I do operation2(), can I assume that bw.close() has completed successfully?

    Hi, I am getting a client date in javscript function using "new date()" object. But this object is considering the properties set for Date&Time control in the control panel of the system. For example, If I check the check box of Date&Time control of the system (control panel) "Automatically adjust clock for daylight saving changes", then I am getting the date(from javscript) according to the Daylight savings time and if I uncheck it, I am getting the date according to the standard time.     hey everybody, I have a jsp page which contains the code which prints all files in a given directory and their file paths. For example, the code spits out the following path: /usr/local/tomcat/sites/web_tech/images/scores/blah.jpg and I want it to only print the path up to /images ie /images/scores/blah.jpg I know I could just mess around with an actual string, ie splitting it or string matching, but is there an easier way to do it?     I am currently building a system which will have entities that will have scores like reputation etc.. I will have a service that will check for certain rules having been triggered, and will perform certain logic if they are triggered. Previously I have used say an Enum for doing this when I have only had to store an id and a description. public enum ShoppingCratCalculation { PartialCalculation = 1, CompleteCalculation =2 } But in this situation I want to carry more information, such as the modification to reputation, all in one place. I'm essentially asking what data structure would be best suited to storing this information, for each rule in the system. 1. Description = string ("User forgot to write a review") 2. DB id = int (23) 3. Rep score modification = int (-5) Maybe a little class (Rule) with these as properties , and then just a list? Does anyone have any best practice suggestions for this kind of struct?

    Hello, I have designed a trading application that handles customers stocks investment portfolio. I am using two datastore kinds: Stocks - Contains unique stock name and its daily percent change. UserTransactions - Contains information regarding a specific purchase of a stock made by a user : the value of the purchase along with a reference to Stock for the current purchase. db.Model python modules: class Stocks (db.Model): stockname = db.StringProperty(multiline=True) dailyPercentChange=db.FloatProperty(default=1.0) class UserTransactions (db.Model): buyer = db.UserProperty() value=db.FloatProperty() stockref = db.ReferenceProperty(Stocks) Once an hour I need to update the database: update the daily percent change in Stocks and then update the value of all entities in UserTransactions that refer to that stock. In the dashboard, I see that the task.py takes around 65% of the CPU (Stock.py takes around 20%-30%) and I am using almost all of the 6.5 free CPU hours given to me by app engine. I have no problem to enable billing and pay for additional CPU, but the problem is the scaling of the system… Using 6.5 CPU hours for 100 stocks is very poor. I was wondering, given the requirements of the system as mentioned above, if there is a better and more efficient implementation (or just a small change that can help with the current implemntation) than the one presented here.     This question might be long, but I want to provide much information. Overview: I'm creating a Stock Quotes Ticker app for Blackberry. But I'm having problems with my StringBuffer that contains an individual Stock information. Process: My app connects to our server via SocketConnection. The server sends out a formatted set of strings that contains the latest Stock trade. So whenever a new trade happens, the server will send out an individual Stock Quote of that trade. Through an InputStream I am able to read that information and place each character in a StringBuffer that is referenced by Threads. By parsing based on char3 I am able to determine a set of stock quote/information. char1 - to separate data char3 - means end of a stock quote/information sample stock quote format sent out by our server: stock_quote_name(char 1)some_data(char1)some_data(char1)(char3) My app then parses that stock quote to compare certain data and formats it how it will look like when displayed in the screen. When trades happen gradually(slow) the app works perfectly. However.. Problem: When trades happen too quickly and almost at the same time, My app is not able to handle the information sent efficiently. The StringBuffer has its contents combined with the next trade.   • What is the peak theoretical WiFi G user density? [closed]

    I've seen a few WiFi capacity planning questions, and this one is related, but hopefully different enough not to be closed. Also, this is related specifically to 802.11g, but a similar question could be made for N. In order to squeeze more WiFi users into a space, the transmit power on the APs need to be reduced and the APs squeezed closer together. My question is, how far can you practically take this before the network becomes unusable? There will come a point where the transmit power is so weak that nobody will actually be able to pick up a connection, or be constantly roaming to/from APs spaced a few feet apart as they walk around. There are also only 3 available channels to use as well, which is a factor to consider. After determining the peak AP density, then multiply by users-per-AP, which should be easier to find out. After factoring all of this in and running some back-of-the-envelope calculations, I'd like to be able to get a figure of "XX users per 10ft^2" or something. This can be considered the physical limit of WiFi, and will keep people from asking about getting 3,000 people in a ballroom conference on WiFi. Can anyone with WiFi experience chime in, or better yet, provide some calculations for a more accurate figure? Assumptions: Let's assume an ideal environment with no reflection (think of a big, square, open room, with the APs spaced out on a plane), APs are placed on the ceiling so humans won't absorb the waves, and the only interference are from the APs themselves and the devices. As for what devices specifically, that's irrelevant for the first point of the question (AP density, so only channel and transmit power should matter). User experience: Wikipedia states that Wireless G has about 22Mbps maximum effective throughput, or about 2.75MB/s. For the purpose of this question, anything below 100KB/s per user can be deemed to be a poor user experience. As for roaming, I'll assume the user is standing in the same place, so hopefully that will be a non-issue.

  • User created Validator wont call Client side validation Javascript on 'complex' user control.

    Hi All, I have created a user control (from System.Web.UI.UserControl), and created my own validator for the user control (from System.Web.UI.WebControls.BaseValidator). Everything works ok until I try to get the user control to do client side validation. While trying to debug this issue I have set 'Control to Validate' to a text box instead of the custom user control, and the client side script works fine! It appears to me that it has an a issue with my composite user control I have created. Has anyone encountered this issue before? Has anyone else seen client side validation fail on custom user controls? Some extra info : The composite control is a drop down list and 'loader image', as it is a ajax enabled drop down list (using ICallbackEventHandler).
