• Cocoon lite / XML and XSLT publishing framework

  What publishing frameworks (publishing only, NOT full-blown CMS) based on XML, XSLT sitemaps and pipelines exist, are stable, active, and simpler / lighter than Cocoon? I have glanced at: mod_xslt (http://www.mod-xslt2.com/) which seemed to be exactly that, but looks all but dead, and required a complex setup, and apparently supported only libxslt as an XSLT processor (I'd like to be able to use Saxon and XSLT 2.0 of course). Apache Forrest (http://forrest.apache.org/), but I don't understand if it is really simpler than Cocoon or is rather an additionnal thing on top of Cocoon? What I'm looking for is something that does just this: recieves an HTTP GET "runs it" through a sitemap finds a pipeline: source.xml - xslt1.xsl - xslt2.xsl - xsltn.xsl - serialize runs the pipeline serves the serialized result to the client and: uses Saxon (or is "processor independant") can be installed "lightly", that is: should not require much more configuration than the sitemap Maybe I'm describing an early version of Cocoon, or a future version of an XProc implementation... Anyway, does such a tool exist?

• Ado.net performance:What does SNIReadSync do?

  We have a query that takes 2 seconds to run in Sql Server Management Studio but it takes 13 seconds to be shown on a client screen. I used dotTrace to profile my source code and noticed there is this SNIReadSync method (part of ADO.net assemblies)that takes a lot of time to do its job(9 seconds).I ran my source over server so I could omit the network effects and the result was the same. It doesn't matter if I'm using OleDBConnection or SqlConnection. It doesn't matter if I'm using a DataReader or a DataSet. Connection pooling does not solve this issue(as my result shows).   I have an ASP.NET application that I need to show a video feed from a security camera. The video feed has a content type of 'multipart/x-mixed-replace; boundary=--myboundary' with the image data between the boundaries. I need assistance with passing that stream of data through to my page so that the client side plugin I have can consume the stream just as it would if I browsed to the camera's web interface directly. • Wait for a single RabbitMQ message with a timeout

  I'd like to send a message to a RabbitMQ server and then wait for a reply message (on a "reply-to" queue). Of course, I don't want to wait forever in case the application processing these messages is down - there needs to be a timeout. It sounds like a very basic task, yet I can't find a way to do this. I've now run into this problem with both py-amqplib and the RabbitMQ .NET client. The best solution I've got so far is to poll using basic_get with sleep in-between, but this is pretty ugly: def _wait_for_message_with_timeout(channel, queue_name, timeout): slept = 0 sleep_interval = 0.1 while slept < timeout: reply = channel.basic_get(queue_name) if reply is not None: return reply time.sleep(sleep_interval) slept += sleep_interval raise Exception('Timeout (%g seconds) expired while waiting for an MQ response.' % timeout) Surely there is some better way?

• Problem using SQLDMO/Vb6 against SQL2008

  I have a client, that uses SQLDMO for a portion of a custom application that was written against SQL 2000, and they recently upgraded to SQL2008. The majority of the app still runs fine (doesn't use SQLDMO), but the admin functions which rely on SQLDMO stopped working. I installed the SQL2005 backward compatibility pack, and now SQLDMO partially works, i.e. I can run "select" type queries, but any "Update" queries fail with the error message: to connect to the server you must use SQL Server management studio or sql server management objects (SMO) Any thoughts? Should the backward compatibility pack give me ALL the functionality back, or is this a known issue? BTW: I realize SQLDMO has been deprecated and will go away next release, none-the-less I need to do what I can to solve the problem at hand.

• ORA-01019 error only as an administrator

  I'm having a strange problem. I've installed the Oracle 10g client on a terminal server running Windows Server 2008R2. When I try to connect to Oracle, using, say, Toad, I receive the error "ORA-01019 unable to allocate memory in the user side". But this only happens if I'm logged in as an administrator. If I connect as a normal user, I can connect without issue. Also -- if a normal user is connected, I can then connect without a problem as an administrator. Any thoughts?

  Hi all, I have an application that uses SQLXML to access data on the database. We have it working on a Windows 2003 server and SQL Server 2005. Now the client wants to install it on Windows 2008 and SQL Server 2008 and we are getting errors like: Microsoft.Data.SqlXml.SqlXmlException: Class not registered --- System.Runtime.InteropServices.COMException (0x80040154): Class not registered at Microsoft.Data.SqlXml.Common.UnsafeNativeMethods. ISQLXMLCommandManagedInterface.ExecuteToOutputStream() at Microsoft.Data.SqlXml.SqlXmlCommand.innerExecute(Stream strm) ... etc etc This is driving me crazy. SQLXML is quite an obsolete technology, and we are trying to use it with the latest SO. I can't find official information about SQLXML and Windows 2008, it seems it's not officially supported but they don't say it's not supported either. The SQLXML4.0SP1 installation seems to work fine, but it seems like it fails on runtime. Do you have any ideas? Has someone tried anything like this?

  Hello I'm planning to a webapp where every guy using it would have a client that would run computations on its computer (because these computations can't be done on the server, too much load...), and then send results to the server. I guess there will be lot of people interested in my application and that's why i'm wonder if my architecture is good and if i'll be able to handle thousands of people. I'm planning to expose remote EJB through JNDI with Glassfish server, so 1000 people could use these EJB at the same time (i guess there could be 5-50 requests / second) to retrieve the data needed for local computation, and then to send the results... Is it expensive to expose EJB to many clients? Would it be better to use webservices, rmi, another solution? Would you recommend me another architecture for what i'm going to do?

  I am making a licensing system when clients ask my server for a license and I send them a license if they are permitted to have one. On my current system I encrypt the license using a single private key and have the public key embedded into the client application that they use to decrypt the license. It works! Others have told me that I should be encrypting with the public key on the server and distributing the private key to clients. I have searched the web and can see that sometimes they use the private key to encrypt and other times they use the public key to encrypt. In this case what am I supposed to do?

  We need to insert a web beacon (i know taboo) in to adobe PDFs to know when they are opened, as one of our clients is moving to a model of "giving" their documents away and following up repeat viewers for subscriptions. Its not enough to be able to provide a download, they want to attach the PDF to an email and "blast" to directed recipients (double-opt-in etc). Adding the javascript to the pdf is easy enough: (iText) and the "openAction" event. However the security box pops up and displays: "Security Warning" "Document is trying to connect to 'xxxx.yyy.com' if you trusty the site choose Allow. If do not trust the site choose Block" [help] [allow] [block] I don't think we need to completley overhaul the dialogue box, I just think we need to change the middle text to be more descriptive of why we are doing it.   Hello all, I am developing a C# application in VS 2010 that is to be deployed via ClickOnce. However when I try to deploy the application on a client machine I get the following error: Unable to install or run the application. The application requires the assembly Microsoft.VisualStudio.Shell.Interop.9.0 Version 9.0.0.0 to be installed in the Global Assembly Cache (GAC) first. I have tried to include the missing assembly into the application files under Project Properties-Publish tab, but the error remains the same. Next I tried to add Microsoft.VisualStudio.Shell.Interop.9.0 to the project's references, but I cannot find it in the reference list. Does anyone have any tips or solutions to this problem.   Hi We are looking at integrating some of our coarse grained business Services using an Event Driven Architecture (EDA) and the server side of these Services (REST) are implemented in both Java and .NET (C#). We originally thought of using RabbitMQ (and AMQP protocol) as a neutral and open means (with good client support in these two languages), but it means having to support another runtime (Erlang) alongside Java and the CLR. We are also looking at Apache qPid as that has a Java broker implementation of the AMQP protocol which might eliminate that concern. Does anyone have any experience of trying to use the richer Apache Camel ESB on top of ActiveMQ to integrate Java and .NET Services in a Pub-Sub EDA manner? Have I missed any other possible suggestions as to a route through this? Thanks

  I have xbap which needs to run on a full trust mode because my application needs to upload a file from the client machine to process. I have to provide a installation steps to install. If i do it as a click one instillation, do i still get a security error? If so what is the best way to resolve it? If i install it in remote server, I saw couple of options in internet like creating certificates and ask user to import this certificate. Other option is to ask the user to allow access to xbap applications which provides access to all xbap applications (not so good). what is best way? • Enable PDO for PHP5 on CentOS5 where PHP is configured as '--disable-pdo'

  Hi I have been given access to a CentOS5 machine by my client for their new site which uses Zend Framework. phpinfo() states in Configure Command that PDO is disabled ('--disable-pdo'). How can enable it? Do I need to recompile PHP5 to enable it? I have tried adding 'extension=pdo.so' in php.ini and restarting Apache, but this didn't work. It would also be nice to understand what '--disable-pdo' actaully means, does it mean it's not compiled into PHP or does it mean its just not enabled? Thanks for your time

• Silverlight local storage

  As you may know Silverlight has support for local storage. We are looking at creating Sl application that will work in off line mode. This application may require quite a bit of data to be cached on the client side. Obvious solution - use local storage with some sort of XMl based structure won't work as our PoC showed due to performance issues. We are looking at several 3rd party solutions that implement light database engines on top of SL local storage. If you have solved this problem in the past or have any ideas - I would appreciate some pointers and ideas.

• Accessing Google Spreadsheets with C# using Google Data API fails with Mono

  I'm trying to access my Google spreadsheets using the GData API. I have followed the example which looks like: var service = new SpreadsheetsService("myTest"); service.setUserCredentials(username, password); var query = new SpreadsheetQuery(); var feed = service.Query(query); This should return a feed with a list of spreadsheets. However this fails with: Google.GData.Client.GDataRequestException: Execution of request failed: http://spreadsheets.google.com/feeds/spreadsheets/private/full --- System.Net.WebException: The remote server returned an error: (404) Not Found. When I try the above link directly in my browser I'm able to download the feed, as long as I'm logged in into my Google account. Some further information: I'm not behind a firewall I have checked my username (maurits.rijk at gmail.com) and password several times I am using Mandriva in VirtualBox on a MacBook All my code is compiled with Mono I tried the same functionality in Java on OS-X. That code runs as expected.

I have a problem with simple silverlight app, this app has a couple of buttons, each button sets mediaelement source to a short mp3 file and plays it, my problem is that when i press the same button second time it re-downloads mp3 file again but i think it shouldn't, instead it should use a copy of browser cached mp3 file that was downloaded when a button was pressed for the first time. I'm using sl4 and links in mediaelement are just simple uri's, i need to make it working in this way that when some mp3 was downloaded it will be cached on the client browser and further click on button will use a cached version of file instead of downloading it again and wasting my bandwidth. Any ideas ?

  Hello, I am developing a Silverlight client using the provided navigation template for an imageboard I developed. I have a "search" tab which lists all searches for tags which were executed. I also have a show post tab which shows (also in tab-form) posts, opened from the search tab. When I open a post from the search page, it instanciates a new control (of type UserControl) and inserts this into the ShowPost page's tabcontrol. When I switch (or get switched) to the Show Post view the layout is all messed up. The UserControl inside the tab does not stretch in the tab. When I switch tabs back and forth this is strangely fixed. The reason seems to be that the user control gets created there but has no layout to "fit to" until said layout is opened, which is too late then.
