• Visual Studio 2008 hangs while opening aspx/ascx file.

  Hi all! I've issue with VS08. I've got Web Application project (vb.net). Whenever I try to open an aspx or ascx (in Source view - just double clicking on Solution Explorer) the file opens, but VS hangs and is not responding. The only way to restart VS is then by killing it's process. And it happens all the time with these types of files. :/ Reinstall didn't work. In addition, the only plugin I've installed with this instance of VS is ClearCase source control plugin.

The website of the statistics generator in question is: http://gitstats.sourceforge.net/ It's git repo can be cloned from: git clone git://repo.or.cz/gitstats.git What I want to do is something like: ./gitstatus --ext=".py" /input/foo /output/bar Failing being able to easily pass the above option without heavy modification, I'd just hardcore the file extentsion I want to be included. However, I'm unsure of the relevant section of code to modify and even if I did no, I'm unsure of how to start such modifications. It's seems like it'd be rather simple but alas...

• Directory file size calculation - how to make it faster?

  Using C#, I am finding the total size of a directory. The logic is this way : Get the files inside the folder. Sum up the total size. Find if there are sub directories. Then do a recursive search. I tried one another way to do this too : Using FSO (obj.GetFolder(path).Size). There's not much of difference in time in both these approaches. Now the problem is, I have tens of thousands of files in a particular folder and its taking like atleast 2 minute to find the folder size. Also, if I run the program again, it happens very quickly (5 secs). I think the windows is caching the file sizes. Is there any way I can bring down the time taken when I run the program first time??

• Possible to map a new file extension to an existing handler in ASP.NET?

  I have a scenario where my application is going to be publishing services that are consumed by both PC's and mobile devices, and I have a HTTPModule that I want to only perform work on only the mobile requests. So I thought the best way of doing this was to point the mobile requests to a different file extension and have the HTTPModule decide to process only if the request targets this new extension. I don't need a custom HTTPHandler for the new extension; I want to program the services like a normal .ASMX service, just with a different extension. First, can I do this? If so, how do I do it so that requests to my new extension are handled just like .ASMX requests? Second, is this the right approach? Am I going about separating and managing the mobile vs. PC requests the wrong way? Thanks, Dave

  This may be a very dumb question but I can't seem to get it working. I use at many places the following syntax for dynamically binding a property of a control in aspx file to the resource entry, e.g. <SomeFunnyControl Text="<%$ Resources : ResClass, ResEntry %>" /> I want to do a similar thing with a class containing some constants, something like <SomeFunnyControl Text="<%= MyConstantsClass.MyStringConstant %>" /> But this doesn't seem to work, it simply sets the text to the exact expression without evaluating it. I am using ASP.NET 3.5 btw. I have tried the databinding approach but I get an HttpParseException saying Databinding expressions are only supported on objects that have a DataBinding event.

  How can I tell if a file is binary (non-text) in python? I am searching through a large set of files in python, and keep getting matches in binary files. This makes the output look incredibly messy. I know I could use grep -I, but I am doing more with the data than what grep allows for. In the past I would have just searched for characters greater than 0x7f, but utf8 and the like make that impossible on modern systems. Ideally the solution would be fast, but any solution will do.

  I receive error messages when attempting to encode files in Expression Encoder when the file width or height is not a multiple of four, or is smaller than 64. I have been able to find very little in the documentation / web searches on this, and nothing that explains what settings may cause / alleviate these limitations. I assume it has something to do with the underlying data type. Error Message: Invalid Width Specified. The value must be an integer between 64 - and 4096 and be a multiple of 4. Can anyone provide further details on why / what settings can be manipulated to change this behavior: I.E. quality, compression etc.

• Where do I put the links to my Javascript/jQuery files in my html file?

  I recently noticed that some (not all) of my javascript and jQuery scripts wouldn't work unless I put the link for the .js files nearer towards the bottom of the page instead of the head area where I put my links for my .css files. From what I understand, javascript can go in either places and it is recommended to not be put in the header as it slows down the page loading process as well. At the same time, if I put it in the body tag of the html file, it looks somewhat messy and was wondering what the best practice is for putting .js files in a cleanly place. Should I always put it at the very bottom right before the ending body tag? How do professional web developers handle this?

• building objects from xml file at runtime and intializing, in one pass?

  I have to parse the XML file and build objects representation based on that, now once I get all these data I create entries in various database for these data objects. I have to do second pass over that for value as in the first pass all I could do is build the assets in various databases. and in second pass I get the values for all the data and put it in the database. I have a feeling that this can be done in a single pass but I just want to see what are your opinions. As I am just a student who started with professional work, experienced ppl please help. Can someone who have ideas or done similar work, please provide some light on the topic so that I can think over the possibility of the work and get the prototype going based on your suggestion.   Say I have a subdomain xxx.yyy.com running Apache. The files are stored in /home/someone/public_html/xxx. What I want to do is redirect all requests to a domain name zzz.com which is using the same location for its files. (In other words, xxx.yyy.com and zzz.com are aliases for each other) I just want people accessing zzz.com, so if someone goes to xxx.yyy.com they should be redirected to zzz.com. Can this easily be done with a rewrite rule in an .htaccess file?

  Hi, I'm a Google App Engine newbie and would be grateful for any help. I have an iPhone app which sources data from an sqlite db stored localling on the device. I'd like to set up a Google App Engine web service which my iPhone client will talk to and check if there is a newer version of the sqlite database it needs to download. So iPhone client hits the web service with some kind of version number/timestamp and if there is a newer file, the App Engine will notify the client and the client will then request the new database to download which the App Engine will serve. Is it possible to set up a web service in Google App Engine to do this? Could anyone point me to any sample code / tutorials please? Many Thanks

• Best way to validate a WinCE OS image (.bin) file?

  We have a Windows CE 6.0 based product that allows for firmware upgrades through a web interface. I want to perform a sanity check on the new firmware image to be sure that it is valid. How should I perform the validation? I see in the BIOSLOADER code, there is support code for decoding a BIN file. I suppose I could massage that to perform the validation. Is there a better way? I am new to Node.js and trying to figure out how to request an object from a separate file (rather than just requesting a function) but everything I try--exports,module-exports,etc--is failing. So, for example, if I have foo.js: var methods = { Foobar:{ getFoo: function(){return "foo!!";}, getBar: function(){return "bar!!";} } }; And now I want to call a function within an object of foo.js from index.js: var m = require('./Methods'); function fooMain(){ return m.Foobar.getFoo(); }; How do I do this? I have tried all sorts of combinations of exports and module-exports but they seem to only work if I call a discrete function that is not part of an object. Thanks!

Some days after I see high server loads that cant be coming just from the cron jobs that I run every now and then to grab feeds from other websites for my blog website. Thats why I m trying to pico some log files in order to have a better look the whole problem. These last days I noticed(from statscounter service) the same IP address visiting my blog website many times per day so I want to find out what us trying to do. I tried looking in all /var/log log files and httpd too but no luck. Is there any other log file I should open or any other procedure to track this IP acivity on server?

  Got an established libsyn rss feed, got a new drupal website for the podcast. Libsyn provides a player but not correct aesthetic. I can upload and play mp3 files with audio module and mp3player module, and like the mp3 player's output, a simple flash player, but I don't want to be manually moving the podcast audio files (mp3) over every week. Looked at importing automatically with Feeds, but it's not working and besides that's creating extra files unnecessarily on the drupal site. Just want to use the mp3player modulee's flash player in a drupal page, which feeds the latest mp3 file from a libsyn rss feed. Don't really need to store or play multiple episodes, just the latest episode. How would you do it?

At this point, I have only been able to find a Java version and a C version. Ideally, this library would be both open-source and free of charge, but I doubt such a decoder exists. • Any way to set or overwrite the __line__ and __file__ metadata?

  I'm writing some code that needs to change function signatures. Right now, I'm using Simionato's FunctionMaker class, which uses the (hacky) inspect module, and does a compile. Unfortunately, this still loses the line and file metadata. Does anyone know: If it is possible to overwrite these values in some odd way? If hacking up a class with a complex getattribute() to intercept the values and also try to make the class looks like a function is any more possible than a moose with a flying nun hat? Is there an alternative to the (hacky) inspect module? PEP 362 is dead dead dead? I know decorators and cPickle users fight with this. What other situations is the read only metadata in people's way? Should anyone stumble across port 80 of this server, I'd like to serve them a page explaining what the domain & server is for, instead of just 404'ing them. How can I serve one small, static, independent (i.e.: no images or CSS) HTML file, with a minimum of effort (meaning both a smooth setup for me, and minimum CPU expense). • How can I leverage String constants in an XML file?

  I'd like to enforce standardized keys by storing them as static final String variables on a Java class, and either referencing or statically importing them, to use them as values in either XML, Strings, Methods, Annotations, etc. Does anyone know a good way to have Maven insert (like filtering) values like StringKeys.SOME_KEY into an XML file? e.g. something like <element value="${StringKeys.SOME_KEY}"/> or similar - the main idea is to enforce commonality and prevent key mis-alignment. Or an alternative solution to accomplish the same - with some semantic that if a non-existant String is referenced, that it fails during build? Bonus points if it works in C# as well.

• Accessing contents of a file in a web-application without uploading.

  As far as I can tell, it is impossible to access the content of files on the user's computer in a web application without first uploading to the server, then re-downloading to user, unless some sort of plug-in is used. (Flash, etc.) Ideally, the user would upload the file directly to localstorage and then scripts would have a chance to process/display/validate/filter without the user having to wait on an upload. Are there any features in upcoming web standards such as html5 that will allow this? If not, why has there been no effort to make this possible, and how can I work around it without getting stuck with plugins?
