• Weird WLAN connection

  I assembled my first computer on my own. As I realised it had no WLAN (AsRock Z77 Extreme 4m) I bought a WLAN stick (ZyXel NWD 2105), plugged it in, started the setup from the CD and it worked, until I restarted the PC. That's when the problems started. The stick is able to connect to the router (P-660HN-F1Z) and the connection is stable, but not the internet access. In estimately 1 minute intervals there might be a short connection timeframe and dropbox or windows update are able to download some data, but as soon as I try to open a website the internet access is away. Note that the connection to the router does not shut down and remains stable at around 80-90%. The problem is definetly located on my pc, because with my laptop and phone the connection is stable and fast. Because I was so pissed off, I bought a EW-7612PIn V2 (PCI-E WLAN adapter), same problem. Now the weird thing is, if I don't use the PC for about 2 days, start it up, there is internet access (happened with both the stick and the PCI-E card). A bit slow, but it does not get away just like that, until I shut it down. Then, no matter how many times I restart, it won't come back. I googled a lot but now I'm at the end with my latin. Has anyone had a similar problem and resolved it? • WindowsFormsApplicationBase SplashScreen makes login form ignore keypresses until I click on it - how to debug?

  My WinForms app has a simple modal login form, invoked at startup via ShowDialog(). When I run from inside Visual Studio, everything works fine. I can just type in my User ID, hit the Enter key, and get logged in. But when I run a release build directly, everything looks normal (the login form is active, there's a blinking cursor in the User ID MaskedEditBox), but all keypresses are ignored until I click somewhere on the login form. Very annoying if you are used to doing everything from the keyboard. I've tried to trace through the event handlers, and to set the focus directly with code, to no avail. Any suggestions how to debug this (outside of Visual Studio), or failing that - a possible workaround? I'm getting a logon user name/pwd box when trying to access my local web server. Using the net panel in firebug, I see the issue is with an animated GIF, showing up as 401 unauthorized. • Move to php in windows? Concern, hints, "please don't do!"?

  I am considering to move frome Microsoft languages to PHP (just for web dev) which has quite an interesting syntax, a perlish look (but a wider programmer base) and it allows me to reuse the web without reinventing it. I have some concerns too. I would be more than happy to gather some wisdom from stackoverflow community, (challenge to my opinions warmly welcome). Here are my doubts. Efficiency. Cgi are slow, what I am supposed to use? Fastcgi? Or what else? Efficiency + stability. Is PHP on windows really stable and a good choice in terms of performances? Database. I use very often MSSQL (I regret, i like it). Could I widely and efficiently interface PHP with MSSQL (using smartly stored pro, for example). XSLT + XML performance. I work quite a lot with XML and XSLT and I really find the MS xml parser a great software component. Are parser used in PHP fast, reliable and efficient (I am interested mainly in DOM, not SAX)? Objects. Is the PHP object programming model valid end efficient? 6 Regex. How efficient is PHP processing regexp? Many thanks for your advices.

• Unable to diligently close the excel process running in memory

  I have developed a VB.Net code for retrieving data from excel file .I load this data in one form and update it back in excel after making necessary modifications in data. This complete flow works fine but most of the times I have observed that even if I close the form; the already loaded excel process does not get closed properly. I tried all possible ways to close it but could not be able to resolve the issue. • Best way to use Google's hosted jQuery, but fall back to my hosted library on Google fail

  What would be a good way to attempt to load the hosted jQuery at Google (or other Google hosted libs), but load my copy of jQuery if the Google attempt fails? I'm not saying Google is flaky. There are cases where the Google copy is blocked (apparently in Iran, for instance). Would I set up a timer and check for the jQuery object? What would be the danger of both copies coming through? Not really looking for answers like "just use the Google one" or "just use your own." I understand those arguments. I also understand that the user is likely to have the Google version cached. I'm thinking about fallbacks for the cloud in general. Edit: This part added... Since Google suggests using google.load to load the ajax libraries, and it performs a callback when done, I'm wondering if that's the key to serializing this problem. I know it sounds a bit crazy. But when I tried the compiled version, there was no difference in performance between the compiled and non-compiled versions. • Do vs. Run vs. Execute vs. Perform verbs

  Before anyone starts to go nuts and red flag this post saying this is "Subjective" which drives me absolutely nuts because everyone has their own intent why they are posting something others feel are subjective. Subjective is subjective to each person, how about that! So with that let me tell you a couple things so that this post does not get flagged by flag happy moderators: 1) There are community guidlines on specific keywords recommended by certain organizations or people (e.g. Microsoft, Lance Hunt, etc.) 2) I want to know what others are using the most and why. Why they feel this verb reads better than others 3) Books even talk about this verb issue (Uncle Bob, etc.), so it's not subjective Now to my actual question: a) What list of verbs are you using for method names? What's your personal or team standard? b) I debate whether to use Do vs. Run vs. Execute vs. Perform and am wondering if any of these are no longer recommended or some that people just don't really use and I should just scratch them. Basically any one of those verbs mean the same thing...to invoke some process (method call). This is outside of CRUDs. For example: ExecutePayPalWorkflow(); that could be also any one of these names instead: DoPayPalWorkflow(); RunPayPalWorkflow(); PerformPayPalWorkflow(); or does it not really matter...because any of those verbs pretty much are understandable as to "what" shows your intent by the other words that follow it "PayPalWorkflow" This discussion can go for any language. I just put the two main tags C# and Java here which is good enough for me to get some solid answers or experiences.

Don't get me wrong grammers are great for telling the speech recognition exactly what words / phrases to look out for, however what if I want it to recognise something i've not given it a heads up about? Or I want to parse a phrase which is half pre-determined command name and half random words? For example.. Scenario A - I say "Google [Oil Spill]" and I want it to open Google with search results for the term in brackets which could be anything. Scenario B - I say "Locate [Manchester]" and I want it to search for Manchester in Google Maps or anything else non pre-determined I want it to know that 'Google' and 'Locate' are commands and what comes after it are parameters (and could be anything). Question : Does anyone know how to mix the use of pre-determined grammers (words the speech recognition should recognise) and words not in its pre-determined grammer? • Sending information between JavaScript and Web Services using AJAX

  Alright so I'm using Microsoft's Web Services and AJAX to get information from a SQL database for use with java script on the client side. And I'm wondering what the best method is. Before I started working on the project, the web services were setup to return a C# List filled with some objects. Those objects variables (ints, strings, etc.) contain the data I want to use. Of course, java script can't do much with this, to the best of my knowledge. I then modified the web service to return a 2D Array, but java script got confused, and to the best of my knowledge can't handle 2D array's returned from C#. I then tried to use a regular array, but then a found the length property of an array in JS doesn't carry over, so I couldn't preform a for loop through all the items, because there wasn't anyway of knowing how many elements there were. The only other thing I can thing of is returning a string with special char's to separate the data, but this seems way too convoluted. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance!

  There's a login/user in SQL Server who is having a problem importing accounts in production server. I don't have an idea what method he is doing this. According to the one importing, this import is working fine in development server. But when he did the same import in production it is giving him errors. Using SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS), I viewed/checked the permissions of the user/login who is performing the import from development server and production for comparison. I found no difference. My question is: Is there a way to programmatically query permissions in server and database level of a particular login/user so I can compare/contrast for any differences?

• mscomctl.ocx on my dev machine gives me problems since security patch of MS

  I am busy on this problem since 2 days ago and hope someone can get me out of it. I have Excel 2010 (full install 944Mb) on my Windows 8 computer. It works well. But when I modify my workbook (containing a ListView version 6.0) I am not able to run it on my client's computer. I get the error: Could Not Load An Object. Not Available on This Machine. Even it works well on my dev machine. The reason is: Microsoft applied a Security Patch (near august 2012 I think) on mscomctl.ocx and my Excel 2010 installation files (downloaded not long ago) contains the new version of mscomctl.ocx. The clients using my Excel file don't apply the security patch at this moment. Se everytime I publish my Excel file to client's computers (from my dev environment), I reference the new mscomctl.ocx. That's the problem. I already try to get the old mscomctl.ocx from client's computer and copy & register it on my dev machine but then I got errors (Class not registered, ...) when I create a userform and drag a listview on it. So: mscomctl.ocx on client's machine is version 6.1.98.13 from 2008. mscomctl.ocx on my dev machine is version 6.1.98.34 from 2012. My question: Does someone have an idea how to proceed to have a usable version of mscomctl.ocx on my dev machine? Thank you very much.

• c++ floating point precision loss: 3015/0.00025298219406977296

  The problem. Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 compiler, 32bit windows xp sp3, amd 64 x2 cpu. Code: double a = 3015.0; double b = 0.00025298219406977296; //*((unsigned __int64*)(&a)) == 0x40a78e0000000000 //*((unsigned __int64*)(&b)) == 0x3f30945640000000 double f = a/b;//3015/0.00025298219406977296; the result of calculation (i.e. "f") is 11917835.000000000 (*((unsigned __int64*)(&f)) == 0x4166bb4160000000) although it should be 11917834.814763514 (i.e. *((unsigned __int64*)(&f)) == 0x4166bb415a128aef). I.e. fractional part is lost. Unfortunately, I need fractional part to be correct. Questions: 1) Why does this happen? 2) How can I fix the problem? Additional info: 0) The result is taken directly from "watch" window (it wasn't printed, and I didn't forget to set printing precision). I also provided hex dump of floating point variable, so I'm absolutely sure about calculation result. 1) The disassembly of f = a/b is: fld qword ptr [a] fdiv qword ptr [b] fstp qword ptr [f] 2) f = 3015/0.00025298219406977296; yields correct result (f == 11917834.814763514 , *((unsigned __int64*)(&f)) == 0x4166bb415a128aef ), but it looks like in this case result is simply calculated during compile-time: fld qword ptr [__real@4166bb415a128aef (828EA0h)] fstp qword ptr [f] So, how can I fix this problem? P.S. I've found a temporary workaround (i need only fractional part of division, so I simply use f = fmod(a/b)/b at the moment), but I still would like to know how to fix this problem properly - double precision is supposed to be 16 decimal digits, so such calculation isn't supposed to cause problems.

• Converting to MVC3 - some views still want 'System.Web.Mvc, Version=1.0.0.0,

  I've used the directions from the release notes and have been able to navigate most pages - my unit tests are not comprehensive but most all pass. However...when I attempt to edit an existing or create a new user I'm getting the error pasted below - notice that it's references version=1... - this project started life as a v1 and was converted to mvc2 at the RTM. • Why is CoRegisterClassObject creating two extra threads?

  I'm trying to fix a problem that only recently happens on a number of machine's on a VPN. They each run a client application I wrote that exposes a COM automation object. For some strange reason I haven't been able to discover yet, one thread in the application takes up all of the available CPU time, slowing other operation on the machine. In observing the application's strange behaviour, I've noticed it's the third thread started, and if I debug on my machine I notice the first call to CoRegisterClassObject created two extra threads. If the second of these two threads is the one that gets into an infinite loop, I'm not at all shure how to fix this. Where could I check next about what's wrong? Could it have started by one of the recent patches rolled out by Microsoft this last 'patch tuesday'? • At what point is it worth using a database?

  I have a question relating to databases and at what point is worth diving into one. I am primarily an embedded engineer, but I am writing an application using QT to interface with our controller. We are at an odd point where we have enough data that it would be feasible to implement a database (around 700+ items and growing) to manage everything, but I am not sure it is worth the time right now to deal with. I have no problems implementing the GUI with files generated from excel and parsed in, but it gets tedious and hard to track even with VBA scripts. I have been playing around with converting our data into something more manageable for the application side with Microsoft Access and that seems to be working well. If that works out I am only a step (or several) away from using an SQL database and using the QT library to access and modify it. I don't have much experience managing data at this level and am curious what may be the best way to approach this. So what are some of the real benefits of using a database if any in this case? I realize much of this can be very application specific, but some general ideas and suggestions on how to straddle the embedded/application programming line would be helpful. Thanks

• Images not shown when publishing MVC application to virtual directory inside default web-site

  Hi! I am developing an application using ASP.NET MVC 1 and VS2008. When I deploy it to the default web-site in my IIS6 on WinXP, all images are shown correctly, path to any given image is localhost/Content/ImagesUI/[image].[ext] When I deploy it to the virtual directory, created inside the same site, any image request returns IIS standard 404 error page, while the path is localhost/[DirectoryName]/Content/ImagesUI/[image].[ext] - that seems to be correct, true? I am mapping .* to c:\windows\microsoft.net\framework\v2.0.50727\aspnet_isapi.dll in both site and directory configurations. When this mapping is removed, images are shown correctly. However, all other URLs do not work, of course. When I am trying to open an image in browser using the URL to it, aspnet_wp.exe process is not even started (I restarted IIS to test it) - I merely get 404 or the image, depending on the presence of * mapping. Thus, I suppose it has nothing to do neither with routes registered for MVC, nor with ASP. The solution that I found is to make Content folder a virtual directory and remove * mapping from its configuration. While that's OK to some extent, I want a better solution, which will explain and eliminate the cause of the problem, not just workaround it. Thanks for your help!
