• Where should you put 3rd party .NET dlls when using git submodules to avoid duplication

  I have two .NET library projects in Visual Studio 2008 that both make use of the MySql Connector for .NET (MySql.Data.dll). These libraries are then in turn both used by a .NET command line application which also uses the Connector. The library projects are pulled in to the application's solution as git submodules and referenced by project in Visual Studio. I'm looking for the most effective strategy for storing and referencing the MySql Connector library. I have tried having the MySql.Data.dll checked in to all three projects (in their root folder), this was problematic when one project changed to a newer version of the connector dll. Although each project had its own version of the dll, only one was packaged into the resultant application leading to an API mismatch which was hard to pin down. This has put me off this approach. I have tried having the command line application reference the connector dll that is held in a submodule, however this only removes the possibility of version mismatches when there is only one submodule rather than two as in this case. I am contemplating putting the dll in the global assembly cache (GAC) of all machines that need to build or use the application, but I'm wary of not having all dependencies for an application available in source control.

  This is not a pure java question and can also be related to HTML I've written a java servlet that queries a database table and shows the result as a html table. The user can also ask to receive the result as an Excel sheet. Im creating the Excel sheet by printing the same html table, but with the content-type of "application/vnd.ms-excel". The Excel file is created fine. The problem is that the tables may contain non-english data so I want to use a UTF-8 encoding. • IHttpModule not being applied to virtual directory

  I have a network folder that is mapped to my iis app as a virtual directory and I'm trying to do some authentication for files that are located there with an ihttpmodule. I've verified that the ihttpmodule is firing properly for anything else in my app, just not the files located in virtual directory. Most of what I've found is that the directory can't be listed as an application (which it isn't), and everything should work. The other solution that I found was to add the the module tag to the tag, but that didn't seem to help either. Everything that I've found talks about stopping this from happening. So my question is what could be set that is causing this to not work? Is there a certain execute permission that needs to be set? Any other iis settings that could cause this? It is an mvc app, and this is how my directory structure is laid out: server/app <- my application folder server/app/content/downloads <- downloads is the virtual directory Do I have to add the virtual directory directly under my app directory? Is that part of the problem? I don't have direct control of the server my code is running on, so testing things out is a bit of a pain... so I was looking for some more thoughts before starting to send emails off to my operations people.   I'm working on a modal comment system using jQuery and jQuery UI, but I'm having some issues with focus. I have a series of divs inside the modal to switch between Login and Add comment, as below: <div id="modal" title="Loading"> <div id="modalContent"></div> <div id="modalLogin"> <div class="loginBox"></div> <div class="addCommentBox"></div> <div class="commentReview"></div> </div> </div> Inside of the addCommentBox div, I've got the comment code: <form action="/comments/add" class="addCommentForm" name="addCommentForm" method="post"> <textarea name="content" class="addCommentContent"></textarea> <button value="Add Comment" type="submit" class="commentPost"/> <button value="Clear Comment" type="submit" id="clearComment"/> </form> The issue is that about half the time after opening the dialog the textarea inside the addCommentBox div doesn't react to keyboard inputs when selected. The mouse works correctly and will allow text to be selected, but keyboard control does nothing. I have no event listeners on the textarea. I've got some on the buttons, but they are targeting only the buttons. The only thing that happens in the HTML seems to be the fact that every time I click on the modal, the z-index increases for the overall modal div. I have set the addCommentBox div to have a z-index of 9999, greater than the z-index of the modal. Any suggestions or directions to research would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

• How does an NSTextField know that it's value has changed?

  I have a textfield that can either be edited by hand, or set through another control. (It's a page number, so you can jump to page 16 by typing in 16, or you can page up and down with the next/prev buttons) I have the value of the text field bound to an int page variable. It seems to work correctly, when you type a page number in, it jumps, when you page up and down, the page number in the text box changes appropriately. However, at some level, when I page up and down, the text box doesn't seem to know that it's value has changed, because if I type 1 it doesn't do anything. It doesn't call the bound set-method or anything. It looks like the textfield is thinking "I'm already 1, so I don't need to do anything." Even though it was 5 because I hit next 4 times. If I type an number other than 1, it goes there. If I THEN type 1, it goes to page 1, because now it thinks it's on that other page. The problem seems to be that I'm changing the value of the textfield programatically, but some part isn't getting the message. Does this seem like a reasonable explanation? And either way, any ideas on what's causing it? thanks

• Remove padding in wxPython's wxWizard

  Hi Guys, I'm using wxPython to create a wizard using the wxWizard control. I'm trying to a draw a colored rectangle but when I run the app, there seems to be a about a 10px padding on each side of the rectangle. This goes for all other controls too. I have to offset them a bit so that they appear exactly where I want them to. Is there any way I could remove this padding? • How to make UISlider output nice rounded numbers exponentially?

  Hi I am implementing a UISlider a user can manipulate to set a distance. I have never used the CocoaTouch UISlider, but have used other frameworks sliders, usually there is a variable for setting the "step" and other "helper" properties. The documentation for the UISlider deals only with a max and min value, and the output is always a 6 decimal float with a linear relation to the position of the "slider nob". I guess I will have to implement the desired functionality step by step. To the user, the min/max values range from 10 m to 999 Km, I am trying to implement this in an exponential way, that will feel natural to the user. I.e. the user experiences a feeling of control over the values, big or small. Also that the "output" has reasonable values. Values like 10m 200m 2.5km 150 km etc. instead of 1.2342356 m or 108.93837756 km. I would like for the step size to increase by 10m for the first 200m, then maybe by 50m up to 500m, then when passing the 1000 m value, it starts to deal with Kilometers, so then it is step size = 1 km up until 50 km, then maybe 25 km steps etc. Any way I go about this I end up doing a lot of rounding and a lot of calculations wrapped in a forrest of if statements and NSString/Number conversions, each time the user moves the slider just a little. I was hoping someone could lend me a bit of inspiration/math help or make me aware of a more lean approach to solving this problem. My last idea is to populate and array with a 100 string values, then have the slider int value correspond to a string, this is not very flexible, but doable. • Really simple JSON serialization in .NET

  I have some simple .NET objects I'd like to serialize to JSON and back again. The set of objects to be serialized is quite small and I control the implementation, so I don't need a generic solution that will work for everything. Since my assembly will be distributed as a library I'd really like to avoid a dependency on some third-party DLL: I just want to give users one assembly that they can reference. I've read the other questions I could find on converting to and from JSON in .NET. The recommended solution of JSON.NET does work, of course, but it requires distributing an extra DLL. I don't need any of the fancy features of JSON.NET. I just need to handle a simple object (or even dictionary) that contains strings, integers, DateTimes and arrays of strings and bytes. On deserializing I'm happy to get back a dictionary - it doesn't need to create the object again. Is there some really simple code out there that I could compile into my assembly to do this simple job? I've also tried System.Web.Script.Serialization.JavaScriptSerializer, but where it falls down is the byte array: I want to base64-encode it and even registering a converter doesn't let me easily accomplish that due to the way that API works (it doesn't pass in the name of the field).

• UpdatePanel refreshes only once

  Hi, I have two updatepanels inside an accordion control, laid out like this: <accordion> <first pane content> <updatepanel UpdateMode="conditional"> <contenttemplate>...</contenttemplate> <triggers>...</triggers> </updatepanel> </first pane content> <second pane content> <updatepanel> <contenttemplate>...</contenttemplate> <triggers>...</triggers> </updatepanel> </second pane content> </accordion> The panel updates once, but after that, no updates take place. If I refresh the page, then I can see the updated information. This means that the database is being updated, but the updatepanel isn't refreshing (after refreshing the first time). Why is this happening? This has been bugging me for days, so any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks!

• ASP.net file operations delay

  Ok, so here's the problem: I'm reading the stream from a FileUpload control, reading in chunks of n bytes and writing the array in a loop until I reach the stream's end. Now the reason I do this is because I need to check several things while the upload is still going on (rather than doing a Save(); which does the whole thing in one go). Here's the problem: when doing this from the local machine, I can see the file just fine as it's uploading and its size increases (had to add a Sleep(); clause in the loop to actually get to see the file being written). However, when I upload the file from a remote machine, I don't get to see it until the the file has completed uploading. Also, I've added another call to write the progress to a text file as the progress is going on, and I get the same thing. Local: the file updates as the upload goes on, remote: the token file only appears after the upload's done (which is somewhat useless since I need it while the upload's still happening). Is there some sort of security setting in (or ASP.net) that maybe saves files in a temporary location for remote machines as opposed to the local machine and then moves them to the specified destination? I would liken this with ASP.net displaying error messages when browsing from the local machine (even on the public hostname) as opposed to the generic compilation error page/generic exception page that is shown when browsing from a remote machine (and customErrors are not off) Any clues on this? • Implementing Model-level caching

  I was posting some comments in a related question about MVC caching and some questions about actual implementation came up. How does one implement a Model-level cache that works transparently without the developer needing to manually cache, yet still remains efficient? I would keep my caching responsibilities firmly within the model. It is none of the controller's or view's business where the model is getting data. All they care about is that when data is requested, data is provided - this is how the MVC paradigm is supposed to work. (Source: Post by Jarrod) The reason I am skeptical is because caching should usually not be done unless there is a real need, and shouldn't be done for things like search results. So somehow the Model itself has to know whether or not the SELECT statement being issued to it worthy of being cached. Wouldn't the Model have to be astronomically smart, and/or store statistics of what is being most often queried over a long period of time in order to accurately make a decision? And wouldn't the overhead of all this make the caching useless anyway? Also, how would you uniquely identify a query from another query (or more accurately, a resultset from another resultset)? What about if you're using prepared statements, with only the parameters changing according to user input? Another poster said this: I would suggest using the md5 hash of your query combined with a serialized version of your input arguments. This would require twice the number of serialization options. I was under the impression that serialization was quite expensive, and for large inputs this might be even worse than just re-querying. And is the minuscule chance of collision worth worrying about? Conceptually, caching in the Model seems like a good idea to me, but it seems in practicality the developer should have direct control over caching and write it into the controller. Thoughts/ideas? Edit: I'm using PHP and MySQL if that helps to narrow your focus.

• Trouble adding video controls to video selected by XML comboBox

  Hello, it's been a few years since I've touched flash, so perhaps I'm just overlooking something. If anyone could look at the code and offer any suggestions that would be awesome. What's working, I select a video from a combobox that is populated from an XML file, pick the video and it plays. I've been trying to add pause/play, stop, forward and reverse functionality, once I get that to work I also want to add a video scrubber(slider), and previous/next buttons to go to the previous/next video as listed in the xml file. At the moment I have a component button on the stage called playButton, which I'm trying to use for pause/play functionality. Below is my code, the player control is at the very bottom.   Doing some jquery animation. I have certain divs set up with an attribute of ani_seq='x' where x is 1 to 9, and then have a class assigned of 'animate'. Some should slide in from the left or right. So, I can certainly write a custom function to do that. What I do not know how to do is set up the custom function so it works like the fadeIn() function in that it accepts a callback function that will be executed when the animation is done. For example, lets say I i have a function like this (not sure this is the proper format): function custom_animate ( in_time_in_ms, in_callback_function ) { // get class of element, and based on class perform either // a fade-in, or a slide-in from left, or a slide-in from right // then after animation is done, return control back to calling // function so it can resume } I would want to replace all of the fadeIn() calls in the first piece of code with custom_animate(), and then inside that function, determine what kind of animation to perform. • are there java based auto-updating tools other than WebStart & Eclipse P2?

  Hi, I am working on a java based application and we are looking to ease our deployment of updates. Up until now, we've always simply sent out new install packs & had the sysadmin's on our customer sites roll out the upgrades - painful for a large number of users. what I'd like to do is something similar to java webstart (or eclipse p2) - when the application starts, it checks for updates in a specified location and then downloads the updates prior to starting. But here's my problem - I want more control over what's done outside of the scope of plugins & jar files. For example: I'd like to be able to upate my JVM (we ship a modified version with additional security features). I need to install DLL's - possibly local to the jar files, sometimes to windows Occasiontally run MSI's to install windows components (e.g. printer drivers). I need to modify config files & the registry. I have found a few applications that support this (such as AppLifeUpdate at http://www.kineticjump.com/) but they tend to be .NET focused and it seems a bit perverse to introduce a .NET dependancy on a java application ;) I know I could write my own here, but if there is already a 3rd party library out there that supports this kind of facility, then it would make my life a lot easier. So, has anyone else had a similar problem & knows of some products I could look at? Thanks, Brian.

• Windows Forms: Unable to Click to Focus a MaskedTextBox in a Non TopLevel Form

  Like the title says, I've got a Child form being shown with it's TopLevel property set to False and I am unable to click a MaskedTextBox control that it contains (in order to bring focus to it). I can bring focus to it by using TAB on the keyboard though. The child form contains other regular TextBox controls and these I can click to focus with no problems, although they also exhibit some odd behavior: for example if I've got a value in the Textbox and I try to drag-click from the end of the string to the beginning, nothing happens. In fact I can't use my mouse to move the cursor inside the TextBox's text at all (although they keyboard arrow keys work). I'm not too worried about the odd TextBox behavior, but why can't I activate my MaskedTextBox by clicking on it? • Does a VCL OrgChart component with decent features exists? Is there a viable alternative?

  I am using DevExpress OrgChart component that is still maintained but not developed since 2003 (fortunately bugs are fixed, but nothing more). Honestly this component, even if it starts to look too old still suffices my requirements except for 2 things: 1) it doesn't support at all the staff feature, for understanding what I mean see this image (where the items in staff are Administration, Communication, IT, Special Projects). 2) it arranges the items without optimizing the space, for example if there are 3 items at top level, and only the second item has 2 childs, the top items items are drawn more distantly, because of the 2 childs, there is no an option for "shirinking" the diagram. Of course the component misses tons of the features one would expect from an OrgChart tool, but in my case Those 2, and expecially (1) are important, the rest is lack of eye-candy. I look for VCL components, but if (as I fear, since I never found it) such component doesn't exist) I can see the following alternatives: i) using Hydra with .net winforms components ii) using ActiveX components. Between the 2 I would prefer ActiveX because of the .NET deployment hell (what I like about Delphi is that you ship the exe to the customer witn Win2k and it works). Anyway I never used an activeX control and I don't know which are the deployment issues, but I fear I will lose the opportunity of replacing an exe and upgrading the software. iii) hire a delphi component develoeper that can customize the DevEx component by adding feature (1) and maybe (2). I am stuck.

• How to host WCF service and TCP server on same socket?

  Tooday I use ServiceHost for self hosting WCF cervices. I want to host near to my WCF services my own TCP programm for direct sockets operations (like lien to some sort of broadcasting TCP stream) I need control over namespaces (so I would be able to let my clients to send TCP streams directly into my service using some nice URLs like example.com:port/myserver/stream?id=1 or example.com:port/myserver/stream?id=anything and so that I will not be bothered with Idea of 1 client for 1 socket at one time moment, I realy want to keep my WCF services on the same port as my own server or what it is so to be able to call www.example.com:port/myWCF/stream?id=222...) Can any body please help me with this? I am using just WCF now. And I do not enjoy how it works. That is one of many resons why I want to start migration to clear TCP=) I can not use net-tcp binding or any sort of other cool WS-* binding (tooday I use the simpliest one so that my clients like Flash, AJAX, etc connect to me with ease). I needed Fast and easy in implemrnting connection protocol like one I created fore use with Sockets for real time hi ammount of data transfering. So.. Any Ideas? Please - I need help.

  I have a non-signed java applet interacting with the same host. Every time I click on an element in my page, the applet (which is a third part applet I have no control on) should load data from a URL. I say should, because for some files, I get java.security.AccessControlException : access denied (java.util.PropertyPermission http.agent read) and some other files are correctly loaded. All files are correctly readable and downloadable from the web server, and they are very simple text files. I also found that, in some cases, files that previously returned the error are now loaded and continue to load, so it seems a cache is involved somehow. Does any of you have an idea of what's going on here ? The behavior seems to be absolutely random, and I have no way of performing debug on this thing. Note: I used this applet to perform many other "single shot" file access, and it never gave me any problem. The only apparent difference I have is that now I do it "on-demand" via a javascript event. What could be the cause, in the java of the applet or anywhere else ?

Problem is that when I access the report from any other system in browser by providing required url. I m getting the following premission error: Server Error in /ReportServer Application. Access is denied: Description: An error is occured while accessing the resources required to serve for this request. You might have not premission to view the requested resources. Error message: 401.3 : You dont have the premission to view this directory or page using the creditinals you supplied. • Setting Connection Parameters via ADO for MSSQL

  Is it possible to set a connection parameter on a connection to SQL Server and have that variable persist throughout the life of the connection? The parameter must be usable by subsequent queries. We have some old Access reports that use a handful of VBScript functions in the SQL queries (let's call them GetStartDate and GetEndDate) that return global variables. Our application would set these before invoking the query and then the queries can return information between date ranges specified in our application. We are looking at changing to a ReportViewer control running in local mode, but I don't see any convenient way to use these custom functions in straight T-SQL. I have two concept solutions (not tested yet), but I would like to know if there is a better way. Below is some psuedo code. Set all variables before running Recordset.OpenForward Connection->Execute("SET @GetStartDate = ..."); Connection->Execute("SET @GetEndDate = ..."); // Repeat for all parameters Will these variables persist to later calls of Recordset->OpenForward? Can anything reset the variables aside from another SET/SELECT @variable statement? Create an ADOCommand "factory" that automatically adds parameters to each ADOCommand object I will use to execute SQL // Command has been previously been created ADOParameter *Parameter1 = Command->CreateParameter("GetStartDate"); ADOParameter *Parameter2 = Command->CreateParameter("GetEndDate"); // Set values and attach etc... What I would like to know if there is something like: Connection->SetParameter("GetStartDate", "20090101"); Connection->SetParameter("GetEndDate", 20100101"); And these will persist for the lifetime of the connection, and the SQL can do something like @GetStartDate to access them. This may be exactly solution #1, if the variables persist throughout the lifetime of the connection.
