• RAID degraded on Ubuntu server

  We're having a very weird issue at work. Our Ubuntu server has 6 drives, set up with RAID1 as follows: /dev/md0, consisting of: /dev/sda1 /dev/sdb1 /dev/md1, consisting of: /dev/sda2 /dev/sdb2 /dev/md2, consisting of: /dev/sda3 /dev/sdb3 /dev/md3, consisting of: /dev/sdc1 /dev/sdd1 /dev/md4, consisting of: /dev/sde1 /dev/sdf1 As you can see, md0, md1 and md2 all use the same 2 drives (split into 3 partitions). I also have to note that this is done via ubuntu software raid, not hardware raid. Today, the /md0 RAID1 array shows as degraded - it is missing the /dev/sdb1 drive. But since /dev/sdb1 is only a partition (and /dev/sdb2 and /dev/sdb3 are working fine), it's obviously not the drive that's gone AWOL, it seems the partition itself is missing. How is that even possible? And what could we do to fix it? • Initialize array in amortized constant time -- what is this trick called?

  There is this data structure that trades performance of array access against the need to iterate over it when clearing it. You keep a generation counter with each entry, and also a global generation counter. The "clear" operation increases the generation counter. On each access, you compare local vs. global generation counters; if they differ, the value is treated as "clean". This has come up in this answer on Stack Overflow recently, but I don't remember if this trick has an official name. Does it? One use case is Dijkstra's algorithm if only a tiny subset of the nodes has to be relaxed, and if this has to be done repeatedly.

  I had a RAID 1 on my system which has a Gigabyte GA 8N SLI motherboard with a Nvidia chipset.(Nvidia Raid IDE ROM BIOS 4.84) When the system was working probably there used to be an icon on the system try which showed my two RAID disks. Bu after my friend accidentally clicked on the "Remove drive safely" icon while trying to disconnect her USB, I noticed that the RAID system wasn't working. After a reboot there was suddenly a failure message during boot screen. When I enter the Nvidia RAID setup utility (F10) I can see that both drives are degraded and that won't change even if I get into them and press R for Rebuild. Other options are only Delete and Exit. When I boot to Windows (XP Pro 32 Bit) I can see both my disks with the same data on each of them but my RAID 1 is broken. It's a relief to see that at least my RAID 1 was active but it's annoying not being able to rebuild it. Is there a way where I can rebuild my RAID 1 without having to delete the array and build it again? Cause I don't want to backup 400 Gigs of data and then recopy it to my drives... (Disks 2 x Seagate ST3500418 AS SATA Drives)

• backup dedicated server runing ubuntu 10.04 and plesk 11.01 prior to update os to uduntu 12.04

  i would like to backup my dedicated server which is my web server hosting various sites and email, so that I can update the os to Ubuntu 12.04, and basically restore back to 10.04 if things go wrong. I have a local machine that I can install 12.04 onto an then I was going to rsinc between the two, but I am fairly clueless when it comes to linux. I can ssh into the remote server and gain root access. can anyone explain if i need to backup the whole server hard drive or just some of the files? Thanks Timmo.

• How can I remove bluetooth-applet in 11.10?

  I tried adding rfkill block bluetooth to /etc/rc.local. This did not work. I tried adding both blacklist bluetooth and blacklist btusb to etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf. This did not work. So I went to Synaptic to remove it altogether, but when I marked bluez for removal it said it was going to also remove gnome-shell as well! So naturally I didn't do that. (Is it sane to run a potential security problem like bluetooth by default? And why is something like that so tightly integrated into Gnome shell?) Can anyone tell me how to get rid of this annoying and unnecessary process?

I know Cal State Fullerton has a degree with a minor in Game Development. however, is that as important as getting a degree from a really great school? • Syncing Files between workgroup server and Ubuntu workstation

  Recently I have decided that I can't make Windows 8 my primary OS on my laptop as it is just too cumbersome to deal with. I am made the switch to Ubuntu and so far so good. Using Windows I have been able to cache folders on my workgroup server using a feature called "Client Side Cache" that allows me to take a copy of my personal files offline while I am in the field, then later I when I return any changes get pushed up to the server and my local cache is refreshed. This feature is completely client driven although characteristics of it (who and what can be cached, and if caching is automatic) can be controlled via a policy assigned as part of a directory membership. Can anyone suggest a linux replacement for this feature? Is there a better way of handling this?

• Specify default group and permissions for new files in a certain directory

  I have a certain directory in which there is a project shared by multiple users. These users use SSH to gain access to this directory and modify/create files. This project should only be writeable to a certain group of users: lets call it "mygroup". During an SSH session, all files/directories created by the current user should by default be owned by group "mygroup" and have group-writeable permissions. I can solve the permissions problem with umask: $ cd project $ umask 002 $ touch test.txt File "test.txt" is now group-writeable, but still belongs to my default group ("mislav", same as my username) and not to "mygroup". I can chgrp recursively to set the desired group, but I wanted to know is there a way to set some group implicitly like umask changes default permissions during a session. This specific directory is a shared git repo with a working copy and I want git checkout and git reset operations to set the correct mask and group for new files created in the working copy. The OS is Ubuntu Linux. Update: a colleague suggests I should look into getfacl/setfacl of POSIX ACL but the solution below combined with umask 002 in the current session is good enough for me and is much more simple.

• How do I read my PDFs and watch videos properly again?

  Whenever I watch videos, either online of local via Totem and/or open PDF files using evince. The system gets really, really bogged down. All apps get really slow, menus take forever to display, switching windows gives me time to make a coffee, etc. I have a couple of bug reports open on this, but what do I need to do to really troubleshoot the issue? I've purged Adobe Flash from the system, but YouTube HTML5 videos still have the issue. A bunch of PDFs saved locally trigger the problem. And to (temporarily) remove the slowness, I need to shutdown the computer, breath for a few minutes, then restart. A simple reboot does not do the trick. How can I identify the cause? This only started on 13.04. I've had Ubuntu on this machine for a year without a problem until "upgrading" to 13.04. I am not a programmer, but I suspect an issue with the Intel video driver.

• Git doesn't sync files until committed, even if checked out in a different branch

  Okay, I have git 1.7.11.1 on Windows and I have a local test repository with 2 branches. One is master with index.php and help.php. I then create another branch called slave :) I run from git bash rm help.php and it disappears from the folder, but I don't stage anything. I switch to checkout master branch and it is supposed to restore file help.php because it is not modified in the master branch, isn't it? And it does not do it. When I go back to the slave branch and commit and then switch to checkout master then help.php appears. Is that the way it is supposed to to work? Why?

  I really like OS X's iCal. Entering events is easy with the mouse and it also gives you a very real visual sense of how long tasks take to complete. We often work remotely in our organisation, so we use a few shared calendars between key individuals to provide us with an overview of hours worked, availability & schedule conflicts without too much disruption to our various, hectic workflows. It really is a neat solution, especially on shared tasks. How many times have you tasked a remote colleague and then lost the thread on whether that task was completed or not? With shared calendars you get a much clearer idea of what your people are working on without having to pick up the phone or compose a chat. However, there are a few areas where this approach fails... iCloud syncing often needs to be re-jiggered The "view only" option on shared calendars does not seem to work, which makes all shared calendars editable by others There is no decent reporting with this workflow There is no task categorisation or tagging Things get very busy in iCal when working with more than 2 shared calendars I've looked at a few task management apps like Basecamp and Harvest, but nothing appears to let me edit my calendar natively and then sync with a 3rd party. Interested in solutions to improve the above workflow and enable us to elegantly increase the amount of users.

So here’s how I came to that figure. Total Revenue Let’s talk total revenue first. This conference has a huge list of companies/organizations paying some amount for sponsorship. Platinum ($1500) x 5 = $7500 Gold ($1000) x 3 = $3000 Silver ($500) x 9 = $4500 Bronze ($250) x 13 = $3250 There’s also a title sponsor level but there’s no mention of how much that is…more than $1500 though, so let’s just say $2500. Total Sponsorship Revenue: $20750.00 For registrations, this conference is claiming over 300 attendees. We’ll just calculate at 300 and the discounted “member rate” – $249. Total Registration Revenue: $74700.00 Booth space is also sold for a vendor area, but let’s just leave that out of the calculation. Total Event Revenue: $95450.00 Now that we know how much money we’re playing with, let’s knock out the costs for the event. Total Costs Hard Costs Audio/Visual Services $2000 Conference Rooms (4 Breakouts + Plenary) $2500 Insurance $700 Printing/Signage $1500 Travel/Hotel Rooms $2000 Keynotes $2000 So let’s talk about these hard costs first. First you may be asking about the Audio Visual. Yes those services can be that high, actually higher. But since there’s an A/V company touted as the official A/V provider, I gotta think there’s some discount for being branded as such. Conference rooms are actually an inflated amount of $500 per. Venues make money on the food they sell at events, not on room rentals. The more food, the cheaper the rooms tend to be offered at. Still, for the sake of argument, let’s set the rooms at $500 each knowing that they could be lower. For travel and hotel rooms…it appears that most of the speakers at this conference are local, meaning there’s no travel or hotel cost. But a few of them I wasn’t too sure…so let’s factor in enough to cover two outside speakers (airfare and hotel). There are two keynotes for this event and depending on the event those may be paid gigs. I’m not sure if they are or not, but considering the closing one is a comedian I’m going to add some funds here for that just in case. Total Hard Costs: $10700 Now that the hard costs are out of the way, let’s talk about the food costs. Food Costs The conference is providing a continental breakfast (YEEEESH!), some level of luncheon, and I have to assume coffee breaks in between. Let’s look at those costs. Continental Breakfast $12 per person Lunch Buffet $18 per person Coffee Breaks (2) $6 per person (or $3 a cup) Snacks (2) $10 per person (or $5 each) Note that the lunch buffet assumes a *good* lunch buffet – two entrees, starch, vegetable, salads, and bread. Not sure if there’ll be snacks during coffee breaks but let’s assume so. Total Food Cost Per Person: $46 Food Cost: $14950 Gratuity: $2691 Total Food Cost: $17641 Total food cost is based on the $46 per person cost x 325. 300 for attendance, 12 for speakers, extra 13 for volunteers/organizers. Gratuity is 18%. Grand Totals So let’s sum things up here. Total Costs Hard Costs: $10700.00 Food Costs: $17641.00 Total:          $28341.00 Taxes:         $3685.00 Grand Total  $32026.00 Total Revenue Sponsorship  $20750 Registration   $74700 Grand Total   $95450.00 Total Profit $63424.00 Now what if the registration numbers were lower and they only got 100 people to show up. In that scenario there’d still be a profit of just under $26000. Closing Comments A couple of things to note: - I haven’t factored in anything for prizes. Not sure if any will be given out - We didn’t add in the booth space revenue - We’re assuming speakers aren’t getting paid, but even if they were at the high end its $12000 ($1000 per session), which is probably an inflated number for local speakers. - Note that all registrations were set to the “member” discounted price.   Im still learning server things so hope the title is descriptive enough. Basically i have sub.domain.com that i want to run on nginx at port 8090. I want to leave apache alone and have it catch all default traffic at port 80. so i am trying something with a virtual name host to proxy pass to sub.domain.com:8090, nothing working yet and go no idea what the right syntax could be. any ideas? most of what i found was to pass TO apache FROM nginx, but i want to the do the opposite. • Is it possible to use Back in Time with Ubuntu One without storing the back up files locally?

  I use Deja Dup as my back up tool. Love its simplicity and the fact that I can store my back up directly on my Ubuntu One account. Now I really like the flexibility of Back in Time, but I can not find a clean way to store my back up in Ubuntu One. Some threads suggest to use the Ubuntu One folder in your system, and that works, but it also keeps a local copy of the back up in my system, and I do not want that. Any work around for this? • Java: compile and run hanging at command prompt

  I'm having an issue that I'm hoping someone can help with. I'm working on netbook running WinXP Pro SP3, 1.6GHz & 1GB of RAM. I've got a relatively simple java program that I'm able to successfully compile and run on other computers (both XP and Win7), so I suspect my code is working fine--I've verified that all computers are running the same version of Java (build 1.7.0_02-b13). For about the past week, I get maybe three or four compiles and runs at the command prompt (running CMD from within WinXp) before I hang with a blinking cursor after keying my command and pressing enter. If I shut down the command prompt window and restart it, I can compile and run the program just fine--again, pointing to an OS/environment issue rather than code. The only system change I've made in the past week is to uninstall a Lexmark printer that I ditched a year ago, and removing/reinstalling Java. Oh, and an automatic Windows update... :\ I've used this netbook successfully for programming classes for the past year and a half. Anyone familiar with this issue and know of some system tweaks to solve it? I suspect that memory may not be getting cleaned up when the java program quits...only when CMD closes, but don't know any tools to troubleshoot. Ideas?

  I'm writing application using quickly Pygtk and glade. this application should have database connection (such as MySQL) for reading and writing data from the local or outsourcing machine \ server. However, in my machine there is MySQL installed, but when releasing the app it sould be installed on another ubuntu machine, which may not have mysql and moreover not the same database with the required database name and structure.... So my questions are: Is it a good choice using mysql as database 1.2 If not what is? Is it posible to embeding mysql or other database program during the installation from ubuntu software center? 2.2 If it's posible: hwo(any tutorial?) Where to store secure data outside the mysql (or whatever) for conecting the database every time a user launch the application

• ubuntu suspend works, but then immediately starts

  Having a strange problem after upgrading from Ubuntu 11.04 to 12.04. Previously I could suspend just fine, the computer will switch itself off. Pressing the ON button will switch it on and it will resume. After upgrading to 12.04 however, when I suspend it does (almost) the same, turns itself off, but about 2 seconds later, the computer turns itself on again, and it goes back to life from suspend. I haven't changed any of the hardware or BIOS and it was working before just fine. Also tried every possible switch of pm-suspend ; setting acpi_sleep=nonvs in /etc/default/grub and also this suggestion but nothing seems to make a difference... UPDATE: just tested suspend using the 12.04 liveCD and it was working perfectly fine... but when I boot normally it doesn't. ANOTHER UPDATE: After re-installing I noticed that I can suspend. However, after restoring my home folder - the strange suspend problem happens again. I then created a new user account. When I login to the other account I can suspend without a problem... So This seems specific to my account only. How/What can cause this in my own user settings?

• How can I disable 'natural breaks' in Workrave?

  I've just discovered Workrave, and was trying to use it along the Pomodoro technique (5mn break every 25mn). But the concept of 'natural breaks' of Workrave seems to interfere with what I'm trying to achieve. Workrave tries to guess that I'm doing a natural break if I stop using my mouse and keyboard for longer than 5s. It then stops the work timer, and start counting time as if I was doing my break. Here is a typical example : I've configured a 5mn rest break every 25mn. I start working. 10mn later, I receive a phone call, or start talking with a colleague, or any work-related action that do not need either keyboard nor mouse. Workrave then stops counting my time as work time, and starts its rest timer. If my phone call is shorter than 5mn, then Workrave will resume its timer where it stopped it. Meaning that my time on the phone is not counted as work time, and so my break time is pushed a few minutes later than it should be. Even worse, if my phone call is longer than 5mn, then Workrave count it as a complete rest break, and when I'll resume working, it will restart its timer completly. I'm looking for either a way to disable the natural breaks, or increase the 'inactivity time' from 5s to maybe ~1mn. Or maybe an other angle to look at the natural breaks that might work with the Pomodoro technique (forced 5mn breaks every 25mn). I'm using Ubuntu 11.10.

Here the things: I want to send email to outside by using our exchange server as the mail relay.But when sending the email through the server,it will response "user unknown".To make it worse, it will bounce back all the sent message to my localhost.   We are using a registry entry to connect our internal workstations to our WSUS server and everything seems to be working except the NoAutoRebootWithLoggedOnUsers entry. Without fail, over the last few weeks, our lab setup as well as our users have been prompted to restart their machines with a 15 minute time out and there's nothing they can do about it. They can't postpone or cancel the restart, all options in the prompt are greyed out. Neither of these entries seems to work, but our priority is getting NoAutoRebootWithLoggedOnUsers working and any help with this would be greatly appreciated.

• Laptop Synaptics Touchpad No Longer Functional After Windows 7 Upgrade

  I have a Toshiba laptop, with an integral Synaptics (PS/2 port) touch pad, that I bought pre-installed with 32-bit Windows Vista. After doing a clean install of 32-bit Windows 7, I can no longer get the touch pad to respond. The function (FN) keys on the laptop still operate correctly, but they no longer display on screen when used. I have no way of knowing if the function key to enable / disable the touch pad is working correctly, although the function keys for dim / brighten display, as well as others, work fine. I have removed the device from the device manager and allowed it to reinstall with no success. I have removed the previous drivers and updated them with the current 32-bit Win7 compatible versions from Synaptics website, with no success. The Synaptics icon displays in the taskbar, and the touch pad is available in the Device Manager, both of which say the device is installed and working correctly. I have checked to make sure that the touch pad is enabled in the Synaptics menu, and have tried toggling enabled / disabled with no success. If anyone has any suggestions, or knows where I can find a solution, I would be very appreciative.
