win7 amd64 guest in kvm does not have sound

hi, my host system is gentoo amd64, guest system is win 7 amd64. the guest system can work, except it does not have sound. i start kvm with -soundhw ac97, QEMU_AUDIO_DRV='alsa', and after i get into the guest system, i can see a 'Multimedia Audio Controller' in the device manager. but win7 cannot find the driver for it. i searched the network for a long time, and i cannot find a driver for intel ac97 for win7 amd64. i also tried -soundhw sb16, es1370, none of them work. please help me fix this.

Rails migration to add boolean column to Postgres on Heroku

I'm trying to execute a simple Rails migration to add a boolean column to an existing table. Here's the add_column call: add_column :users, :soliciting, :boolean, :null => false, :default => false However, after the migration runs (successfully, with no errors), I don't see the new column. If I go into the console and list the columns on the User table, for example, with this command: >> User.columns.each { |c| puts "#{c.name} : #{c.type}" } All the other columns show up, but not the one I just added with the migration. What's even more strange is that looking up a random user object yields the Postgres version of booleans (Ruby strings) >> User.find(1).soliciting => "t" However, the existing boolean columns all show up with standard Ruby boolean values of true and false. What's going on here? Is the migration actually complete? Why doesn't the column show up, yet is accessible in the model objects?

Can't set-up Wifi Adhoc on my Raspberry Pi with an USB dongle

I am trying to set-up an access point (ad-hoc) for my Raspberry Pi. That means I'm trying to "share" the ethernet connection over Wi-Fi. I am doing this using my Ralink Technology, Corp. RT2501/RT2573 Wireless Adapter. When following a tutorial (or actually every tutorial), it immediately goes wrong. root@pinkypi:/home/pi# iwconfig wlan0 mode ad-hoc Error for wireless request "Set Mode" (8B06) : SET failed on device wlan0 ; Device or resource busy. I already tried ifdown and not having it in the USB port at the startup. If it helps, every action with the thing fail (or at least setting the mode). I am using Debian. I'm sure I'm overseeing something, but I can't find out what. What is wrong?

Kate gives out debug messages on the console from which it is started

I am new to Linux. I use Ubuntu 11.04. Whenever I open a file with kate from the commandline, with 'kate &' (or without ampersand), Kate starts out giving messages on the console. It continuously gives them out as I save a file or close one. They look like debug messages to me (sample below). I have used Synaptic package manager to install Kate. Uninstalling and installing the dev version did not make any change. Soon my console becomes cluttered. Is there a way to suppress these messages? There was nothing explicit in Kate settings either. My friend is a Skin specialist (Tricologist) and she has a computer with WinXP in her office. She asked me if I can recommend a hardware which would enable her to write on a graphics tablet that would appear on the screen. Her requirement is thus: There is a prescription paper, a sheet of paper (A4 size) which has a letter head (With the title of the Clinic, Doctor's name etc). The exact image of the paper is available on the Computer. She takes the pictures of the patient's head with a camera and pastes the photo over the sheet of paper. So the top half of the prescription paper will have the photo of the patient's head. In the second half, she wants to write the medication required. I have heard of Bamboo graphics tablet and I saw video in Youtube. But I am not sure if it would be the right solution for her. Can anyone please advise me on this?

Expired Windows XP and Safe Mode

I thought it's possible to run expired Windows in Safe Mode. However, Windows has expired and I'm getting the following message trying to log-in in SF: "This copy of windows must be activated with Microsoft before you can continue. Because activation cannot occur in safe mode, please restart the computer in normal mode to activate windows.". Does every version of XP behave like that? Is there any way around?

Flash Player in Windows 7 X64 problems

I'm having a lot of problems with flash player in my win 7 X64 laptop, in YouTube the videos are completely black, you can only hear the sound and in Vimeo the videos are played well in normal size but completely black in fullscreen. Also some days ago YouTube played normal size videos but with controls not visible. I'm sure that the problem isn't the browser since this happen in Chrome, Firefox and IE 8. My laptop is a Dell XPS L501X, the flash version is 10,2,152,26 and the OS is Windows 7 Home Premium with SP1. I'll appreciate any help.

Memory leak in Google Chrome

As a developer it is very common for me to have 2-3 different IDE's open, 10-15 google chrome windows which can hold up to 200 open tabs (I know I get out of hand some times), Photoshop, couple twitter bots for promo, and a few other programs but my system still runs fast and smooth. I have an i7 processor with 12gb ram. Now with all my usual stuff running my Physical memory is usually running around 50-60% however over the course of the day or much less even, I will gradually grow to 98% The highest Memory usage processes will be from Google Chrome, if I sort in the task manager by highest memory usage and end the 1 highest process which will be a google chrome one, my memory usage will jump back down to about 60%. Also by ending that 1 process, all my Chrome windows will remain open and in use, so it doesn't affect me at all by ending that process. Based on this research I am assuming that that 1 runaway process is likely the Adobe Flash as I also can say that it gets up to the 98% much faster when I am using flash items like video or music player. But even without using any of them it will still climb up to that high number eventually. Has anyone else experienced similar results?

On a dual-GPU laptop, is using the discrete GPU ever more power efficient?

Given a laptop with a dual integrated/discrete GPU configuration, is it ever more power efficient to use the discrete GPU instead of the integrated? Obviously when writing an email or working on a spreadsheet, the integrated GPU will always use less power. But let's say you're doing something graphics-medium but not graphics-intensive/heavy - is there a point where it actually makes sense to fire up the discrete GPU, not for performance but for power-saving reasons? Off the top of my head, I can think of a scenario where the external GPU supports hardware decoding of a particular video codec - I'd imagine there is a "price point" where using the GPU saves more energy than decoding that fully in software would. But I think most GPUs, integrated or discrete, pretty much decode just the plain-Jane h264. But maybe there is something more complicated, perhaps if you're doing something like desktop/windowing animations or a flash animation on a website (not an embedded flash video) - maybe the discrete GPU will use enough less power to make up for switching to it? I guess this question can be summed up as to whether or not you can say beyond doubt that if you don't care for performance on a laptop with two GPUs, always use the integrated GPU for maximum battery life.

WAMP vhost issues with all vhost pointing to the first vhost statement

I am trying to setup vhosts in WAMPSERVER and I am running into an issue where all sites are pointing to the first vhosts and not delegating properly. Has anyone had this issue? Here is my setup. Can't change text color in Microsoft Word 2010

I have Microsoft Office 2010 32-bit running on Windows 7 32-bit. When text is highlighted and a color is selected from the mini-toolbar or the ribbon, the text does not change color. If I change the color for multiple words, and select a different color for each word, the toolbar and ribbon will reflect each of the different colors that I chose, however it is not displayed in the document. So it appears that Word is aware of the text color and not as if it is simply not applying the change. What may be causing this inability to view text colors and how might I fix it? My only troubleshooting attempt so far has been to perform a repair installation of Office. EDIT 1 I created a document, typed a word, selected it and changed the color. I then saved the document as HTML. The text did not change color. Oddly, I had some strange issues while the macro was recorded. I could not select text with my cursor. I had to select the text with control a and then apply the color change. I then couldn't deselect the selected text. Nonetheless, the text showed that it had a different color in the toolbar, but the color did not display in the document. Here's the macro: Sub Change_Text_Color() ' ' Change_Text_Color Macro ' ' Selection.TypeText Text:="Test Text" Selection.WholeStory Selection.WholeStory End Sub EDIT 3 I opened WordPad and created some text and was able to successfully change the color. If I copy and paste the colored text into a Word 2010 document, the color is lost. However, if you place the I-beam in the text and then look at the color selection drop-down menu on the ribbon or mini-toolbar, you can see that the proper color that the text should be in is highlighted. Edit 4 I uninstalled the entire Office 2010 Suite, rebooted and then reinstalled the suite. No change in behavior. Edit 5 Text cannot be colored in Excel either.
