• How do I get back hard drive space after I have uninstalled Ubuntu from Windows?

  I installed Ubuntu on windows like it says to do it on Ubuntu's website as an application. I did not want it to create a separate partition on my hard drive. A few days ago, I uninstalled Ubuntu by going into the Windows control panel and hitting uninstall. As you would expect, I would get back my 100 or so gb on the disc. i never really installed anything of importance on ubuntu so i never had a second thought about uninstalling it. But I never got back my 100gb from Ubuntu. Now when I add up all of the folders on my c drive, they total to the amount I had on windows before I uninstalled Ubuntu but when I look at the My Computer screen, it says that another 100 or so gb is missing. I tried defragmenting the disc, downloading various disc managers but nothing fixed the space problem. Can anyone please help me with this!!??? Any help is much appreciated! Just making sure: UBUNTU WAS NOT ON A SEPARATE PARTITION, IT WAS INSTALLED AS AN APPLICATION ON WINDOWS. • Using Computer Management (MMC) with the Solaris CIFS Service (August 25, 2009)

  One of our goals for the Solaris CIFS Service is to provide seamless Windows interoperability: not just to deliver ubiquitous, multi-protocol file sharing, which is obviously a major part of this project, but to support Windows services at a fundamental level.  It's an ongoing mission and our latest update includes support for Windows remote management. Remote management is extremely important to Windows administrators and one of the mainstay tools is Computer Management. Computer Management is a Windows administration application, actually a collection of Microsoft Management Console (MMC) tools, that can be used to configure, monitor and manage local and remote services and resources.  The MMC is an extensible framework of registered components, known as snap-ins, which allows Computer Management to provide comprehensive management features for both the local system and remote systems on the network. Supported Computer Management features include: Share ManagementSupport for share management is relatively complete.  You can create, delete, list and configure shares.  It's not yet possible to change the maximum allowed or number of users properties but other properties, including the Share Permissions, can be managed via the MMC. Users, Groups and ConnectionsYou can view local SMB users and groups, monitor user connections and see the list of open files. If necessary, you can also disconnect users and/or close files. ServicesYou can view the SMF services running on an OpenSolaris system.  This is a read-only view - we don't support service management (the ability to start or stop) SMF services from Computer Management (yet). To ensure that only the appropriate users have access to administrative operations there are some access restrictions on these remote management features. Regular users can: List shares Only members of the Administrators or Power Users groups can: Manage shares List connections Only members of the Administrators group can: List open files and close files Disconnect users View SMF services View the EventLog Here's a screenshot when I was using Computer Management and Server Manager (another Windows remote management application) on Windows XP to view some open files on an OpenSolaris system to prepare a slide presentation on MMC support.

• Screen resolution stuck at 1024x768

  I just updated from Ubuntu 10.10 to 11.04 and have an issue regarding the screen resolution. I have Intel integrated gfx chip and my monitor supports resolutions larger than 1024x768. It could be a new feature, a fix, a behavior change, a tip, etc. #7 WebSocket Session Throttling and JMX Monitoring GlassFish 4.1 embeds Tyrus 1.8.1 which is compliant with the Maintenance Release of JSR 356 ("WebSocket API 1.1"). This release also brings brings additional features to the WebSocket support in GlassFish. JMX Monitoring: Tyrus now exposes WebSocket metrics through JMX . In GF 4.1, the following message statistics are monitored for both sent and received messages: messages count messages count per second average message size smallest message size largest message size Those statistics are collected independently of the message type (global count) and per specific message type (text, binary and control message). In GF 4.1, Tyrus also monitors, and exposes through JMX, errors at the application and endpoint level. • How to analyze data

  We are working on an application that allows user to search/read some content in a particular domain. We wanted to add some capability in the app which can suggest user some content based on the usage pattern (analyze data based on frequency and relevance). Currently every time user search or read something we do store that information in backend database. We would like to use this data to present some additional content to user. Could someone explain what kind of tools will be required for such a job and any example? And what this concept is called, data analysis? data mining? business intelligence? or something else? Update: Sorry for being too broad, here is an example SQL Database (Just to give an idea, actual db is little different with normalization and stuff) Table: UserArticles Fields: UserName | ArticleId | ArticleTitle | DateVisited | ArticleCategory Table: CategoryArticles Fields: Category | Article Title | Author etc. One Category may have one more articles. One user may have read the same article multiple times (in this case we place additional entry in the user article table. Task: Use the information availabel in UserArticle table and rank categories in order which would be presented to user automatically in other part of application. Factors to be considered are frequency and recency. This might be possible through simple queries or may require specialized tools. Either way, the task is what mention above. I am not too sure which route to take, hence the question. Thoughts??

  When migrating companies from legacy environments to the cloud, invariably you run into older hierarchical, flat file, VSAM, ISAM and other legacy data stores. There are many advantages to moving these databases into a relational database structure. The most important which is that most cloud providers run on relational database models. AWS, for example, supports Oracle, SQL Server, and MySQL. The top three 'other reasons' for moving to a relational database are: 1. Data Access – Thousands of database access tools from query creation to business intelligence. 2. Management and monitoring – Hundreds of tools for management and monitoring of the database. 3. Leverage all the free tools from relational database vendors. • What are some general guidelines for setting up an iOS project I will want to personally publish but sell in the future?

  I have an idea for a personal iOS project that I would like to write and release to the iOS store. I'm the type of developer who enjoys developing and publishing. I want to write quality software and take care of my customers. Assuming that I wrote an application that had reasonable success, there is a fair chance that I would want to sell the ownership rights of the app to another party and I'd use the proceeds to develop my next personal project which, in turn, I'd probably want to sell in the future. With that said, what are some general guidelines for creating, making and publishing an iOS project that I will eventually want to transfer to another company/developer? I know this is a bit of a broad question, but I request that the given advice be a general list of tips, suggestions and pitfalls to avoid. If any particular bullet point on your list needs more explanation, I'll either search for the answer or post a new question specific to that requirement. Thank you! • .html extension or no for SEO purposes

  I know this question has been asked before on Stack Overflow, but what I have not been able to find in the posts I've read are concrete references as to WHY one is better than the other (something I can take to my boss). So I'm working on an MVC 3 application that is basically a rewrite of the existing production application (web forms) using MVC. The current site uses a URL rewriter to rewrite "friendly" urls with HTML extensions to their ASPX counterpart. i.e. http://www.site.com/products/18554-widget.html gets rewritten to http://www.site.com/products.aspx?id=18554 We're moving away from this with the MVC site, but the powers that be still want the HTML extension on the URLs. As a developer, that just feels wrong on an MVC site. I've written a quick and dirty HttpModule that will perform a 301 redirect from the .html URL to the same URL without the .html extension and it works fine, but I need to convince management that removing the .html extension is not going to hurt SEO. I'd prefer to have this sort of friendly URL: http://www.site.com/products/18554-widget Can anyone provide information to back up my position or am I actually trying to do something that WOULD hurt SEO, in which case can you provide references on that?

• Defining formula through user interface in user form

  I am a student and developing a simple assignment - windows form application in visual studio 2010. The application is suppose to construct formulas as per user requirement. The process: It has to pick data from columns of Microsoft Access database and the user should be able to pick the data by column name like we do in a drop down menu. and create reusable formulas in it ( configure it once and can change it again). followings are column titles from database that can be picked for example. e.g Col -1 : Marks in Maths Col -2 : Total Marks in Maths Col -3 : Marks in science Col -4 : Total marks in science Finally we should be able to construct any formula in the UI like (Col 1 + Col 3 ) / ( col 2 + col 4) = Formula 1 once this is formula is set saved and a name is assigned to it by user. he/she can use the formula and results shall appear in a window below. i.e He would be able to calculate his desired figures (formula) by only manipulating underlying data on the UI layer....choose the data for a period and apply the formula and get the answer Problem: It looks like I have to create an app where rules are set through UI....... this means no stored procedures are required in SQL.... please suggest the right approach.

• Cursor seems to freeze in the first attempt of typing - Unity 3D, 12.04

  It happens in the first attempt of typing, no matter is after the startup, or 5 minutes later, or then after. The cursor (or maybe it's the system) seems to freeze, no matter the application I use, taking up 5 sec to appear what is typed. Subsequently, everything is normal, using another applications. @Anwar Shah suggested it could be a daemon waiting to run before the lauching of the first application. Turning off Zeitgest didn't help. It occurs only with Unity-3d. Tested with Unity-2d, everything is fine. Tried to change some Compiz settings, nothing worked, although not tested with every single parameter. Also I deactivated Ati proprietary driver, no effect. My system: AMD E350 1.6Gh, 2G-Ram, ATI graphics - Ubuntu 12.04, 64bits. Update 1: the cursor is blinking normally before I start typing. After the first character (which is not showed), seems to freeze, taking 5 seconds to get normal again. Very annoying, specially when you want to access login sites. Update 2: I tested on a different and old machine (Athlon 64 4800 x2, 4Gb ram, no problems - takes 2 seconds, acceptable. I think it could be related to my specific hardware (Samsung RV415), but not sure about it. Anyone experiencing something similar? Is that what I should expect, or can be fixed or improved? Thanks.

• "The protocol 'net.msmq' is not supported."

  OMG, a new lesson! Will wonders never cease? So I ran into an interesting issue setting up a WCF service to consume an MSMQ queue. I won't bother you with the details of how to actually build a WCF/MSMQ service; there are plenty of tutorials on the subject. I want to share with you an interesting error that I ran into and the surprisingly simple fix. The error occurs when attempting to generate a Service Reference or even simply browsing to the WSDL of your WCF/MSMQ service in the form of a YSOD with the following error: "The protocol 'net.msmq' is not supported." After a lot of Googling on the subject turning up plenty of questions with the same error but no answers. So I went digging into some application level config files on a server that already had a WCF/MSMQ service successfully set up by the network admin, and the answer was amazingly simple: If you are hosting an MSMQ/WCF service in IIS, you have to tell IIS to allow net.msmq protocol. It's in the advanced settings for the application or site in which you are hosting the service. .... aaaand, that's it.

• Microsoft Public License Question

  Let preface this by saying that I understand that any advice I may receive is not to be taken as 100% correct, I am just looking for what people's understand of what this license is. I have been looking for a library that allow be to deal with archived compressed files (like zip files) and so far the best one I have found is DotNetZip. The only concern I have is that I am not familiar with the Microsoft Public License. While I plan to release a portion of my project (a web application platform) freely (MIT/BSD style) there are a few things. One is that I don't plan on actually releasing the source code, just the compiled project. Another thing is that I don't plan on releasing everything freely, only a subset of the application. Those are reason why I stay away form (L)GPL code. Is this something allowed while using 3rd party libraries that are licensed under the Microsoft Public License? EDIT The part about the Microsoft license that concerns me is Section 3 (D) which says (full license here): If you distribute any portion of the software in source code form, you may do so only under this license by including a complete copy of this license with your distribution. If you distribute any portion of the software in compiled or object code form, you may only do so under a license that complies with this license. I don't know what is meant by 'software'. My assumption would be that 'software' only refers to the library included under the license (being DotNetZip) and that is doesn't extends over to my code which includes the DotNetZip library. If that is the case then everything is fine as I have no issues keeping the license for DotNetZip when release this project in compiled form while having my code under its own license. If 'software' also include my code that include the DotNetZip library then that would be an issue (as it would basically act like GPL with the copyleft sense).

• Launching LibreOffice Files - Unusual Window Behaviour

  Ubuntu 11.10 Unity. If I launch LibreOffice Files (ODS, ODT, ODP) with a double click in their home folders they launch with the appropriate application (Calc, Writer, Impress) however the application windows do not display the usual Close, Minimize, Restore buttons in the left hand corner. There is just a blank space where they should be. In the Unity launcher on the left there is not the expected white arrow next to the launcher icon and the open app is not seen by the ALT+TAB keystroke when you have multiple windows open. For example: if you have an app open in this way and say Firefox, if you minimize Firefox you are only left with the desktop and you have no way to locate the open LibreOffice app. Clicking the app's icon in the launcher simply opens another instance. A messy workaround is to click [Firefox] to a restored window and the LibreOffice app can be seen behind it allowing a mouse click to bring it forward. If I open the LibreOffice app from the launcher and then Open a file from its menu, it all behaves as expected. I don't find this as convenient; anyone know how to fix the bad behaviour?

• Does unit testing lead to premature generalization (specifically in the context of C++)?

  Preliminary notes I'll not go into the distinction of the different kinds of test there are, there are already a few questions on these sites regarding that. I'll take what's there and that says: unit testing in the sense of "testing the smallest isolatable unit of an application" from which this question actually derives The isolation problem What is the smallest isolatable unit of a program. Well, as I see it, it (highly?) depends on what language you are coding in. Micheal Feathers talks about the concept of a seam: [WEwLC, p31] A seam is a place where you can alter behavior in your program without editing in that place. And without going into the details, I understand a seam -- in the context of unit testing -- to be a place in a program where your "test" can interface with your "unit". Examples Unit test -- especially in C++ -- require from the code under test to add more seams that would be strictly called for for a given problem. Example: Adding a virtual interface where non-virtual implementation would have been sufficient Splitting -- generalizing(?) -- a (smallish) class further "just" to facilitate adding a test. Splitting a single-executable project into seemingly "independent" libs, "just" to facilitate compiling them independently for the tests. The question I'll try a few versions that hopefully ask about the same point: Is the way that Unit Tests require one to structure an application's code "only" beneficial for the unit tests or is it actually beneficial to the applications structure. Is the generalization code need to exhibit to be unit-testable useful for anything but the unit tests? Does adding unit tests force one to generalize unnecessarily? Is the shape unit tests force on code "always" also a good shape for the code in general as seen from the problem domain? I remember a rule of thumb that said don't generalize until you need to / until there's a second place that uses the code. With Unit Tests, there's always a second place that uses the code -- namely the unit test. So is this reason enough to generalize?
