• New thread per client connection in socket server?

  I am trying to optimize multiple connections per time to a TCP socket server. Is it considered good practice, or even rational to initiate a new thread in the listening server every time I receive a connection request? At what time should I begin to worry about a server based on this infrastructure? What is the maximum no of background threads I can work, until it doesn't make any sense anymore? Platform is C#, framework is Mono, target OS is CentOS, RAM is 2.4G, server is on the clouds, and I'm expecting about 200 connection requests per second.

• building an ASP NET MVC site, should i go with linq to sql?

  so i'm about to start a new website from scratch and i've spent about a week trying to figure out what technology to go with. i'm sold on ASP NET MVC. i'm 100% sure i'm going to love using that. but what i am not so sure about yet is using LINQ 2 SQL. so far i've gathered some data... 1) stack overflow uses it - can't be that bad 2) can be REALLY slow if you don't take advantage of compiled queries 3) will always be slower than ADO net, but can be almost just as fast if using #2 in the proper places 4) is NOT the preferred MS solution (there was a thread here on SO about dropping support) i'm itching to use it, but just want to make sure it's the best for me. i come from a heavy ADO/stored procedure and traditional asp net background (this will be my first experience with ASP MVC).

• Storing task state between multiple django processes

  I am building a logging-bridge between rabbitmq messages and Django application to store background task state in the database for further investigation/review, also to make it possible to re-publish tasks via the Django admin interface. I guess it's nothing fancy, just a standard Producer-Consumer pattern. Web application publishes to message queue and inserts initial task state into the database Consumer, which is a separate python process, handles the message and updates the task state depending on task output The problem is, some tasks are missing in the db and therefore never executed. I suspect it's because Consumer receives the message earlier than db commit is performed. So basically, returning from Model.save() doesn't mean the transaction has ended and the whole communication breaks. Is there any way I could fix this? Maybe some kind of post_transaction signal I could use? Thank you in advance.

• Change highlighting of certain subviews in a UITableViewCell

  Is it possible to exclude certain subviews in a UITableViewCell from being highlighted or to change their highlight implementation? I added an orange warning label to the UITableViewCell for certain occassions and it highlights properly with the rest of the cell, which is good. However, when the cells stops being highlighted in an animated way, you first see the background of the warning label become white and then flash to orange. I would either like it to be excluded from being highlighted at all, or to change it's highlight implementation so it animates back to orange properly.

• How to link to a folder in document library from sharepoint list item?

  Hi, Background: I have an items on the sharepoint list. I also have a corresponding folder in a document library that contains documents about this item. I want to be able to get to this folder straight from the item properties. I have tried to create a lookup column containing folder ID, but that doesn't help cause folder is not a type and it just doesn't work. Other solution would be to create link column but if I will create it staticly - after creating alternative mapping (and getting to the page from the internet for example) it won't work. (so solution posted here won't work for me). I want to create this link from sharepoint workflow. I have a custom action that can return any info about the folder I want (ID, URL etc). Question: How to link from sharepoint list item to a folder in document library?

• .focus() doesn't work on an input while orher attributes works

  I have a classic table / thead / tbody structure, which I add a line at the end of the tbody. The line contains only an input element. The code works in Firefox 3.6 but not in Chrome v5 or IE8. I'm using jQuery 1.4.1. Does not work: $("#" + AJAX_ID).parent().find('tr:last > td:nth-child(2) > input').focus(); Does work: $("#" + AJAX_ID).parent().find('tr:last > td:nth-child(2) > input').css('background-color', 'red'); even setting an ID on the input, and using document.getElementBuId('id').focus() doesn't work.   I need to add some code to the of several html contained in a folder on my desktop. How can i do that? I am using a prototyping tool (Axure) on Mac and I want to add some html meta tags to the generated pages. These pages can be overwritten every time I generate the prototype. What I need is a sort of script that I can launch after re-generating the prototype, to reinsert the code. • Image animation stops on minimizing and restoring

  I have a .NET WinForms application with an animated GIF in a PictureBox. It's a loading animation, shown while a BackgroundWorker does some processing in another thread. I load the image by setting the Image property and it animates on its own. All is fine until I minimize and restore the application. At which point, the image stops animating and just displays whatever frame it was last on. Note that: The background thread still runs fine and none of the "business" of the application is affected. Subsequently-displayed animated GIFs do work fine (unless the application is minimized again). Does anyone know what causes this problem? Any workarounds?

• iPad portrait... zoomed in on load, div not at full width

  When testing out my site on my iPad, the layout works as expected in landscape mode. When I try it in portrait mode, it is zoomed in, cutting off about 20% of the right hand side. And when I zoom that out, the background of the header and the footer containers only stretches the width that it was when zoomed in. I've dug around a bit online, and I'm suspecting it might have something to do with my meta tag. When I get rid of that tag completely, it displays the way I want it to, but gets rid of any responsive layout that I've designed for less than 767px when I load it on my iPhone. (Displays as if it wasn't responsive at all). Any ideas as to how I might go about fixing this? (Here's one of the pages that I'm talking about http://dotwong.com/test/tip/docking/)

I've found out that AFTER is a valid keyword but I don't think it's the right one for the job. ALTER TABLE [dbo].[InvStockStatus] ADD [Abbreviation] [nvarchar](32) DEFAULT '' NOT NULL ; This is my current query, which works well, except it adds the field at the end of the Table, Id prefer to add it after [Name]. I've recently started learning web programming. I really like SVG + CSS, and was wondering -- why do people not design entire webpages in SVG? Context SVG provides beautiful primitive: quadratic + cubic bezier curves; lines + filling -- all as vector graphics SVG provides text SVG provides affine transformations Questions Are there examples of people designing entire websites as a giant SVG file? If not, what the limitations? Are there performance hits when using SVG primitives as opposed to divs/tables?

• iOS UITableViewCell UIImageView setting on different conditions

  I have an app that has a UITableView and in my Cells I have UIImageViews and UILabels that change images/textColors for a day theme and a night theme (trying to be automatically set). My issue is that I set the images and colors when the table is populated with cellForRowAtIndexPath and its during the day "theme", then if I reopen the app hours later in the night "theme" and the app is still in the "background" and not needing to be reloaded (ie viewDidLoad doesn't fire), the day "theme" shows until I scroll the UITableView and then the night "theme" shows when new cells are brought into view by scrolling. How should I set the objects in my cells when changing around time of the day? I was thinking to use an NSTimer, but I'm not sure how to update the objects in my cells. I was also thinking about using the appropriate methods in the AppDelagate to set things in motion, but is there a way to force reloading the TableView? Any suggestions?

• Transforming a TXT file in a list, getting wrong

  I have a txt plain file that has a list of numbers. One number per line, like: 978-972-722-649-8 978-972-722-646-7 978-972-722-627-6 978-972-722-625-2 978-972-722-594-1 etc. This list is on a file called file.txt, was created and saved on TextEdit using Western (ISO Latin 1) encoding. Now I am trying to use Applescript to read this file and transform it on a list. I have this script set myDirectory to path to desktop folder as string set myFile to myDirectory & "file.txt" try set open_file to ¬ open for access file myFile without write permission set myList to read open_file using delimiter return close access open_file on error try close access file open_file end try end try after running this script, myList contains just ONE item and this item is "97" (I suppose that is the first two numbers of the first entry). • Key logger wont record key strokes without console

  I created a small basic key logger in C++. For some reason when I compile and run the program with the console displayed, it will record every key stroke I make in whatever program I am using such as a browser and store it in a text file. However when I make it so that it WON'T display a console window, it will not record anything and it's just a process in the background doing nothing. • Positioning the dialog box in the centre of the screen

  I have a dialog box developed in mfc for a Windows CE device and want it to occupy the entire screen. I used the following code to center my dialog box on the lcd screen of the device: CWnd* pWnd = GetDesktopWindow(); CenterWindow(pWnd); However, I still get a tiny sliver of space on the left side of the dialog box, resizing the dialog merely makes it overflow on the right side of the LCD while the tiny space on the left remains (I can see the blue of the win CE desktop behind.) Are there any suggestions to solve this problem? I checked the margin settings for this dialog box in my .rc files and leftmargin and topmargin are both set to 0. I was wondering if I could get the coordinates of the centre of the screen and then place my window one or two points to the left to deal with the current offset. A messy approach I know!

• IE 8 and text fading

  I have a problem with fading text in IE 8, 7 and 6 (obviously). The text has a black outline during the animation that completely ruins the effect. Is there a workaround? I've read a bunch of answers about this problem and none made sense. Please take a look at this simple jsFiddle http://jsfiddle.net/LhSK7/ in IE 8, and show me how to fix it if possible. Edit: screenshot of the problem: http://i43.tinypic.com/1z6h1th.png I thought it might be because of the VirtualBox, but all other browsers display it correctly in VirtualBox. Edit #2: the problem can sort of be solved by setting the background color of the element being faded, which while still pretty ugly in IE 8 and below, at least gets rid of the black outline.
