• Running applictions via ruby and multi-core support? (OSX)

  Hi All, I'm looking for some tutorials/resources/tips that will show me how to run applications via a ruby script. I have several small tools that we use in our day to day operations that I want to manage their tasks in one ruby script. Basically what I'm trying to do is: run app via ruby script. (wait for result) get result code (success, or error msg) if ok, start the app on its next task. Also each of the tasks are independent so I'd like to take advantage of the 8 cores on my MacPro and run 8 instances at a time. Any resources you could point me towards would be greatly appreciated!

• Preferred menus for C# application.

  Which of the menu tools do you use for C# windows applications? I began with MainMenu, but when I moved to VS2005, only MenuStrip appeared in the Toolbox, so I assumed it was new and better. However, the merge/replace action seems to require a lot more time and effort, and leave one open to maintenance problems. (Perhaps my real question is "what were they thinking when they created MenuStrip?) Do you drag/drop the menus, or do you write the code? Do you use MainMenu, MenuStrip, or some other alternatives?

• Jetspeed null PortletDefinition

  Hello, I am running a jetspeed portal which contains various portlet applications and have come across an issue after a recent reinstall where some of the portlets will return Cannot pass a null PortletDefinition to a PortletEntity Any idea what is causing this issue? I investigated a bit and it seems that jetspeed runs a process when new portlets are added where it creates mappings in its DB (derby in my case). If this does not complete it seems to cause this problem. Is my assumption correct? If yes, how can I restart this process? Many thanks

• No recent books on MPI: is it dying?

  I've never used Message Passing Interface (MPI), but I've heard its name thrown about, most recently with Windows HPC Server. I had a quick look on amazon to see if there were any books on it, but they're all dated around 7 or more years ago. Is MPI still a valid technology choice for new applications, or has it been largely superceded by other distributed programming alternatives (e.g. DataSynapse GridServer)? As it's not really an implementation, but rather a standard, what is the likelihood (assuming it's not dead) that learning it will result in better design of distributed programming systems? Is there something else I should be looking at instead?

• Using ASP.Net 4.0 for new Dev projects

  I am currently in the early stages of developing a couple web applications, I have not written any code yet as I am still just gathering requirements and scoping things out. I want to target ASP.Net 4.0 winforms as the platform for these apps but I want to make sure there are no glaring issues with this new version before I commit. I understand that if I was porting an existing app from 2.0, 3.5 to 4.0 there may be issues but I am starting from scratch on these projects and plan to write these apps to support the new features of 4.0. Should I wait for the first service pack to come out? Just seems like more work to start with 3.5 now only to go back through and tweak things for 4.0 in just a few months or even before I finish the app. Our servers are Win 2K3 with IIS6 and MS SQL 2000, Should I expect any problems with VS 2010 and MS SQL 2000 in regards to Linq to SQL and EF?

  Just came across FlockDB graph database. Details at github /flockDB. Twitter claims it uses FlockDB for the following: Twitter runs FlockDB on a large cluster of machines. we use it to store social graphs (who follows whom, who blocks whom) and secondary indices at twitter. At first glance, setup and trying it doesn't look straight forward. Have anyone already used it / setup this? If so, please answer the following general queries. What kind of applications is it better suited for? (Twitter claims it is simple and very rough, it remains to see what it meant though) How is FlockDB better than other graph db / noSQL db. Have you setup FlockDB, used it for a application? Early advices any? Note: I am evaluating the FlockDB and other graph databases mainly for learning them. Perhaps, I will build an application for that.

I have been doing work in JOOMLA, MAGENTO, WP, Custom PHP, Opencart, laravel, codeignitor. Sometimes i need to design logic for a huge database application, in the applications we need nesting loops and queries, although i follow OOPS standards, ORM etc, still i feel i need more robust coding designs. I need to know how can i improve these things, so that code remain neat, efficient and faster. Also how big webapps like facebook twitter tests there code speed?   I read that SHA-1 is being retired from the FIPS 180-2 standard. Apparently there are weaknesses in SHA-1 that led to this decision. Can anyone elaborate on the basis for that decision? Are there implications for the use of SHA-1 in commercial applications? My real questions are: What is the state of SHA-2 support in various class libraries and platforms? Should I attempt to move to SHA-2? Interested in mainstream platforms: .NET, Java, C/C++, Python, Javascript, etc.

• In Ruby on Rails Routing I Would Like to Use Dash `-` Instead of Underscore `_`

  I would like all the URLs for my web applications to use dash - instead of underscore _ for word separators. I'm surprised about a couple of things really: Google et al. continue to distinguish them. That RoR doesn't have a simple global configuration parameter to map - to _ in the routing. Or does it? I found a few questions here and elsewhere, but the best solution I've seen is to use :as or a named route. That's quite annoying. So I'm thinking of modifying the Rails routing to check for that global config and change - to _ before dispatching to a controller action. But before I do that, I'm hoping someone can save me the trouble! Thanks in advance for any help, or even confirmation that my approach makes sense. I'd submit it back. BTW, I'm currently on 2.3.8, but hope to migrate to 3 soon.

• EPOC EMOTIV cognitive suite is user dependent or independent

  After working a bit with EPOC EMOTIV, i suspect that its cognitive suite is user dependent, though its other suites are not and work absolutely well in all cases. It's use in cognitive area is wide and many such applications have also been developed. BCI CAD 3D geometry shapes are also a good example. But the main issue i want to highlight is that is it's cognitive suite depends on a particular set of data( same set always). I want to work more deeper with cognitive suite so any help(suggestions, research papers, EEG data processing), anything which can be a great source to deal with. Thanks!

  Can a mathematical function like sin() be redefined, in Fortran, C or Java code, while preserving the default behavior of other mathematical functions like cos()? Or can another function named sin() but that accepts different argument types be defined in addition to the built-in sin()? I am interested in general features of these languages (I am thinking of applications like the implementation of non-usual number algebras). I tried to define a sin() function in a Fortran 95 program, but the intrinsic sin() function was called instead… Is there a way around this? what about C and Java?

• How do I do a fresh install of Google App Engine?

  I've been using GAE for months now, but very recently I've had difficulty getting the latest release (1.3.4) to work for me. I'd like to remove GAE and start from scratch and reinstall it. However, it appears that deleting the googleappenginelauncher.app is not enough to completely remove it, because when I install the launcher again I see that it remembers the applications it was running previously (so at a minimum, there are some config files out there that I'm not removing properly). I'm new to Macs, so if there are other things I need to do besides deleting the .app, please let me know. Thanks for your help!

• How to? - part of the site over ssl, other part not

  What is common practice for coding web applications where part of the site has to be secured (e.g. checkout section) and part not necessarily, lets say homepage. As far as I know sharing sessions in between http and https parts of the site is not easily possible (or is it?). What would be common approach if I wanted to display on http page like homepage, shopping cart data (items) that users ordered on https pages? How those two parts of the site would communicate if necessary? Also isn't it security flaw in popular shopping carts as it seems that many of these have only checkout pages secured (ssl) and the rest not? I'm using php if it makes any difference.

• "Use windows xp style dpi scaling" disables automatic auto-hide of taskbar on W7. Workaround?

  We noticed that on W7 with DPI set to 125% or to 100% with ("Use windows xp style dpi scaling") turned off, our fullscreen mode (which sets the client rect of our window = desktop rect of the main monitor) no longer hides the task bar like it does for other settings. (The setting can be found in the Control Panel\Appearance and Personalization\Display section after clicking on the "Set custom text size (DPI)" link) I found the following interesting article: http://www.mathies.com/weblog/?p=908 So I set out to try to work around the bug in other means than manually hiding/restoring the taskbar visibility but so far I've failed and currently believe it's a bug in W7 (and possibly vista). The following applications also fail to work properly in fullscreen mode (the taskbar is still visible): * Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 * Microsoft Word 2007 * Adobe Reader 9.1.3 These apps work (probably by hiding the task bar through the WIN32 API): * Powerpoint Slide Show I also tried creating a brand new MFC-based app and use its "SetFullScreenMode()" functionality but it fails in the same way as all other apps on the list. • In what circumstances can large pages produce a speedup ?

  Modern x86 CPUs have the ability to support larger page sizes than the legacy 4K (ie 2MB or 4MB), and there are OS facilities (Linux, Windows) to access this functionality. The Microsoft link above states large pages "increase the efficiency of the translation buffer, which can increase performance for frequently accessed memory". Which isn't very helpful in predicting whether large pages will improve any given situation. I'm interested in concrete, preferably quantified, examples of where moving some program logic (or a whole application) to use huge pages has resulted in some performance improvement. Anyone got any success stories ? There's one particular case I know of myself: using huge pages can dramatically reduce the time needed to fork a large process (presumably as the number of TLB records needing copying is reduced by a factor on the order of 1000). I'm interested in whether huge pages can also benefit more mundane applications though.

• MVC framework for huge JEE application

  Which MVC-framework is the best option (performance/ease of development) for a web application, that will have + 2 million visits per week. Basically the site is a search engine,but also there will be large amounts of xml parsing, and high db traffic. We are using Java, over Jboss 4.2.3x, with PG as DB, and Solr for the searches. We were thinking on code JSPs with taglibs, and Servlets, but we were feeling like there would be a better alternative, which don't know yet, as we are starting on the Java Web applications world. • Best way to do TDD in express versions of visual studio(eg VB Express)

  I have been looking in to doing some test driven development for one of the applications that I'm currently writing(OLE wrapper for an OLE object). The only problem is that I am using the express versions of Visual Studio(for now), at the moment I am using VB express but sometimes I use C# express. Is it possible to do TDD in the express versions? If so what are the bast was to go about it? Cheers. EDIT. By the looks of things I will have to buy the full visual studio so that I can do integrated TDD, hopefully there is money in the budget to buy a copy :). For now I think I will use Nunit like everyone is saying.

• Run Java Application as a Service

  I would like to run a Java application as a service. Unfortunately, I am limited in that I can't use something like the Java Service Wrapper (which does appear to be an excellent tool). Is there any way of running an executable JAR, as a service, without relying on external applications? I currently have the service installed, but it fails to start. This is where I am getting stuck and I haven't been able to find anything on Google other than information about the JSW. Thanks.

• How do you optimize database performance when providing results for autocomplete/iterative search?

  Note: In this question I'm using the term "autocomplete" (or "iterative search") to refer to returning search-as-you-type results, e.g. like Google Search gives you. Also my question is not specific to web applications vs. fat client apps. How are SQL SELECT queries normally constructed to provide decent performance for this type of query, especially over arbitrarily large data sets? In the case where the search will only query based on the first n characters (easiest case) am I still issuing a new SELECT result FROM sometable WHERE entry LIKE... on each keypress. Even with various forms of caching this seems like it might result in poor performance. In cases where you want your search string to return results with prefix matches, substring matches, etc. it's an even more difficult problem. Looking at a case of searching a list of contacts, you might return results that match FirstName + LastName, LastName + FirstName, or any other substring.

• If I were in a Silverlight focus group, here is ten things I would say.

  Silverlight is a great product right off the shelf. I use it, love it and spend a lot of time helping the community understand it. This however, doesn’t mean that I don’t think that it can get better. If I were invited to a Microsoft Focus Group about Silverlight here is 10 things I would say:  We need more navigation templates. I’ve found (4) templates that Microsoft has released (Cosmo, Windows 7, Accent and JetPack). This number needs to be around 16. In order to get more people developing for Silverlight, we need to give them a variety of templates to get them off the ground quickly. Silverlight needs to ship with the next version of Windows. At least version 4 needs to be pre-installed on Windows going forward. It’s small, in its own sandbox and I cannot find a reason for it not to be included. Silverlight needs to run on more platforms.  iOS and Android are the key here. I think Microsoft should shoot for Android first since I believe Android will take the lead in the mobile market (at least for the short-term). It would also be great to see Microsoft use Silverlight as the focus on their new tablets / “AppleTV”. I would even invest in getting it working with Kinect. When creating a new project in Silverlight, we should have the option to create a Unit Test. Most Silverlight developers are not unit testing. If this is surprising to you then you need to get out and talk to more developers. I partially blame this on Microsoft. When you create a new ASP.NET MVC application, you simply put a check to create a Unit Test project. We need the same thing for Silverlight. We should steer the developer into the right direction. Design patterns such as MVVM need to be easier to implement in Silverlight solutions.  I’d go so far as to say that MVVM Light should ship with Visual Studio. With the project / item templates and code snippets, Laurent puts you into the right direction. This is the way that it should have been. Easy for the 9-5 developer to grasp. I believe the majority of developers use code behind because that’s what is in all the demos provided by Microsoft. They are not trying to write sucky code it is that they simply don’t know a better way.  The XAP Files should be obfuscated/unused references deleted by default when in “Release” mode. A better Silverlight experience starts with a smaller XAP file. The less that a user has to download is the better, even with the majority of people on broadband. I would also recommend built-in obfuscation by Microsoft. People are paranoid that they can rename the .zip and run it through reflector. Get rid of the boring install experiences. Here is a great write up on what I’m talking about. The default “Install Silverlight” and “Loading screens” suck. They suck bad. We need a choice of templates that a professional designer has created.  Silverlight needs to supports more image formats. For example: it would be great to use .gif’s without converting them to .png.    Switching between Blend 4 and VS2010 to develop a Silverlight application is a pain. Probably one of the biggest issues that I can’t think of a good solution for. It would be nice if VS2012 had the best of both worlds and you never have to leave VS. We need reporting controls with SSRS included with the Silverlight Toolkit. I can’t think of another control that we need built into the toolkit. It would also be helpful to have export to .xls, .pdf and .doc included with the control. I hope that this post will at least get a few people talking. • What technology to use for a RIA

  I have to develop a online business software solution (similar to ERP) for a company to manage the information exchange for internal use and with external partners. It should be online. What technology should I use, I have checked framewroks like: Flex, Silverlight, Google/GWT, sencha (ExtJS), jQuery, DoJo, Telereik, Infrajistics and others similar. But they seam to be very low level programming. May be this is advantage for other projects, where you need more flexibility, but this project is stright forward. I need something more focused on business software (tables, forms, processes) where and eventually more efficient with less coding, or something I can save time. Is force.com an option? But I can not install this on the customer's servers... Do you have any ideas for me for a web based framework focused on business applications?

• Searching for a complex and well-designed PHP OOP application to learn from

  Basically, I am diving ever deeper into complex programming practices. I've almost no friends that are experienced (or more experienced than me) programmers to learn from, so I am looking for the next best thing - learning from the work of strangers. Can anyone recommend a real world finished and working application written well and OOP-centered. I'd like to take and analyze its source. Bonus if it's based on Zend Framework. What I am interested most in is objects that unlike desktop applications, have only one real operation done to them (or to their representation in DB or session) during their lifetime (or pageload), like user-logIn(). I'm interested in optimal and reusable design patterns and their real life implementations.

• JPA in distributed Java EE configuration

  Hello, I'm developing a JEE application to run on Glassfish: Database (javaDB, MS SQL, MySQL or Oracle) EJB layer with JPA (Toplink essentials - from Glassfish) for database access JSF/Icefaces based web UI accessing the EJB layer The application will have a lot of concurrent web client, so I want to run it on different physical servers and use a load-balancer. My problem is now how to keep the applications synchronized. I intend to set up multiple servers, each running Glassfish with my EAR app installed. Whenever on one of the servers data is added to or removed from the database (via JPA, no direct SQL queries), this change should be reflected in the JPA layer on the other servers. I've been looking around for solutions to this, but couldn't find anything I really like (the full Toplink from Oracle claims to have a solution, but don't know). Doing a refresh before every access to a JPA entity could work, but is far from efficient. Are there any patterns, libraries, ... that could help here? Thanks a lot!

• After tar extract, Changing Permissions

  Just a Question Regarding unix and PHP today. What I am doing on my PHP is using the Unix system to untar a tarred file. exec("tar -xzf foo.tar.gz"); Generally everything works fine until I run into this particular foo.tar.gz, which has a file system as follows: Applications/ Library/ Systems/ After running the tar command, it seems that the file permissions get changed to 644 (instead of 755). This causes Permission denied (errno 13) and therefore disabling most of my code. (I'm guessing from lack of privileges) Any way I can stop this tar command completely ruining my permissions? Thanks. Oh and this seems to only happen when I have a foo.tar.gz file that Has this particular file system. Anything else and I'm good.
