• Please explain class methods

  I'm finding it difficult to understand when it is necessary to create class methods. From what I've read, they are important for creating new objects, but I do not see how. The following class create a simple shape black rectangle. Can anyone show me how to incorporate a class method to do something that I could not do with an instance method? • Can't install libopenssl-ruby

  I'm trying to install ruby on rails and I can't seem to install libopenssl-ruby. I'm on a VPS and I've installed Jaunty as the newer releases don't seem to work very nicely. When I do: apt-get install libopenssl-ruby I get: E: Package libopenssl-ruby has no installation candidate Originally it simply said that it couldn't find the package but after wget'ing a deb form here: http://linuxappfinder.com/package/libopenssl-ruby and trying to install using dpkg I get this new error. Dpkg itself said that it couldn't install my deb as it depended on 'libopenssl-ruby'. Currently my sources.lst is this: ###### Ubuntu Main Repos deb http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ hardy main restricted universe multiverse deb-src http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ hardy main restricted universe multiverse Does anyone know what might be wrong?

  in software sources i see a lot of links that don't link to lanchpad.net http://deb.playonlinux.com/ oreiric main http://dl.google.com/linuxearth/deb/ stable main http://linux.dropbox.com/ubuntu precise main i was wondering: can i add a regular download link in my sources.list. here is what i mean to do. this is the download link for notepad++(an example) http://download.tuxfamily.org/notepadplus/6.1.3/npp.6.1.3.Installer.exe i wonder can i add this(or an other) link to download the latest version of notepad++(or any software for that matter) and every time there is a new version of notepad++ i can install the latest via update-manager. this is exactly when adding vlc(A example) in the sources.list. And when the software. has been downloaded to run a command like wine npp.6.1.3.Installer.exe /S /Silent for silent installation.

  I have some experience in developing with Java, Javascript and PHP. I am reading Microsoft Visual C# 2010 Step by Step which I feel it is a very good book on introducing you to the C# language. I seem to be having problems in understanding the static keyword. From what I understand this far if a class is declared static all methods and variable have to be static. The main method always is a static method so in the class that the main method exists all variables and methods are declared static if you have to call them in the main method. Also I have noticed that in order to call a static method from another class you do not need to create an object of that you can use the class name. What are the advantages of declaring static variables and methods? When should I declare static variable and methods?

• Does Google include the time to load images, for a single page, as part of the page speed?

  we all know that Google's affects your page rank with the load time of a page. How? That's part of the secret sauce. But we know that page speed is a serious factor. So - what is considered the speed of a page? Is it just the first (and main) html file which the GET receives? Or does it also include loading of images as part of that speed. so for example... GET /index.htm <- takes 0.45 seconds to retrieve (including DNS lookup before). robot parses page.. see's there's a single main image.... GET /img/main.png <- takes 5 seconds to download. is the page speed for that resource, 0.45 seconds OR 5.45 seconds? I understand Javascript is not fired .. but are any of these external resources all downloaded and part of the page speed?

• Trigger Happy

  Its been a while, I know, we’ll say no more OK? I’ll just write …In the latest BIP 11.1.1.6 release and if I’m really honest; the release before this (we'll call it dot 5 for brevity.) The boys and gals in the engine room have been real busy enhancing BIP with some new functionality. Those of you that use the scheduling engine in OBIEE may already know and use the ‘conditional scheduling’ feature. This allows you to be more intelligent about what reports get run and sent to folks on a scheduled basis. You create a ‘trigger’ analysis (answer) that is executed at schedule time prior to the main report. When the schedule rolls around, the trigger is run, if it returns rows, then the main report is run and delivered. If there are no rows returned, then the main report is not run. Useful right? Your users are not bombarded with 20 reports in their inbox every week that they need to wade throu. They get a handful that they know they need to look at. If you ensure you use conditional formatting in the report then they can find the anomalous data in the reports very quickly and move on to the rest of their day more quickly. You could even think of OBIEE as a virtual team member, scouring the data on your behalf 24/7 and letting you know when its found an issue.BI Publisher, wanting the team t-shirt and the khaki pants, has followed suit. You can now set up ‘triggers’ for it to execute before it runs the main report. Just like its big brother, if the scheduled report trigger returns rows of data; it then executes the main report. Otherwise, the report is skipped until the next schedule time rolls around. Sound familiar?BIP differs a little, in that you only need to construct a query to act as the trigger rather than a complete report. Let assume we have a monthly wage by department report on a schedule. We only want to send the report to managers if their departmental wages reach and/or exceed a certain amount. The toughest part about this is coming up with the SQL to test the business rule you want to implement. For my example, its not that tough: select d.department_name, sum(e.salary) as wage_total from employees e, departments d where d.department_id = e.department_id group by d.department_name having sum(e.salary) > 230000 We're looking for departments where the wage cost is greater than 230,000 Dexter Dollars! With a bit of messing I found out you can parametrize the query. Users can then set a value at schedule time if they need to. To create the trigger is straightforward enough. You can create multiple triggers for users to select at schedule time. Notice I also used a parameter in the query, :wamount. Note the matching parameter in the tree on the left. You also dont need to return multiple columns, one is fine, the key is if there are rows returned. You can build the rest of your report as usual. At scheduling time the Schedule tab has a bit more on it. If your users want to set the trigger, they check the Use Trigger box. The page will then pop fields to pick the appropriate trigger they want to use, even a trigger on another data model if needed. Note it will also ask for the parameter value associated with the trigger. At this point you should note that the data model does not make a distinction between trigger and data model (extract) parameters. So users will see the parameters on the General and Schedule tabs. If per chance you do need to just have a trigger parameters. You can just hide them from the report using the Parameters popup in the report designer, just un-check the 'Show' box I have tested the opposite case where you do not want main report parameters seen in the trigger section. BIP handles that for you! Once the report hits its allotted schedule time, the trigger is executed. Based on the results the report will either run or be 'skipped.' Now, you have a smarter scheduler that will only deliver reports when folks need to see them and take action on the contents. More official info here for developers and here for users.

  I am just moving to python from Java and have a question about the way the two do things. My question relates to contracts. An example: an application defines an interface that all plugins must implement and then the main application can call it. In Java: public interface IPlugin { public Image modify(Image img); } public class MainApp { public main_app_logic() { String pluginName = "com.example.myplugin"; IPlugin x = (IPlugin) Class.forName(pluginName); x.modify(someimg); } } The plugin implements the interface and we use reflection in main app to call it. That way, there's a contract between the main app and the plugin that both can refer to. How does one go about doing something similar in Python? And also, which approach is better? p.s. I'm not posting this on SO because I'm much more concerned with the philosophy behind the two approaches.

• How can I set a second screen (DISPLAY=:0.1) as the default gnome display?

  Due to various reasons, I have my main monitor set as the secondary display in xorg.conf. I would like to have gnome initialize metacity, gnome-panel as running primarily on :0.1, instead of :0.0. Is this possible at all? To clarify, this is a laptop with its LCD turned off. My main monitor is connected to the VGA out and is driven by the nouveau driver for NVIDIA; a secondary monitor is on a displaylink usb-vga donverter. The seconday monitor is set in xorg.conf as the primary display (no way around it). I can do things like DISPLAY=:0.1 gnome-terminal to run applications on the main monitor. My question is whether it is possible to do this (GNOME-) system-wide.

Questions: Can we keep: www.OurMainWebsite.com as the main Canada site and create a www.OurMainWebsite.com/US as the US site? Can those 2 URL's be geotargetted as per above, and wouldn't the fact that US is a subfolder of the main TLD through things off? can I target a TLD to one country and a subfolder under the TLD to abother? • Swap and hibernation

  I saw a lot of recommendations claiming that for hibernation the swap partition/file must be at least as large as the main memory. This makes no sense to me. Lets assume I have 8 GB of main memory and 8 GB swap area and want to hibernate: case 1: I'm using 4 GB of virtual memory - 8 GB of swap is unnecessarily large. case 2: I'm using 8 GB of virtual memory - 8 GB of swap is just right. case 3: I'm using 12 GB of virtual memory - 8 GB of swap is too small. The outcome is: A swap area of size equal to the memory size is sufficient for hibernate IFF it doesn't get used for swapping at all. So what is the reason behind the claim that you need at least as much swap area as main memory for hibernate to work? I know that virtual memory gets used for caching too, and that the cache may be simply discarded, but what happens to hibernation if a program allocates 12 GB of virtual memory (given the above memory and swap sizes)?

Reading about language related meta-tags for Google, I have placed such a meta tag on the main page of main site: <link rel="alternate" hreflang="en" href="http://en.aroundnails.com/" /> By this way I have tried to say Google, that my site on en.aroundnails.com is the english version of main site, not a duplicate. After a fortnight I have lost a huge part of traffic from Google, more than a half. At the beginning of September I have moved this meta-tag, but traffic remained at the same level. Hope somebody can help me to solve this issue.

  Should I be using WAI-ARIA in my website builds? Will it have any benefit? Is anyone adding 'role' to their code at the moment? The tab, link, checkbox and slider roles, plus many more, aren't available yet for HTML5. From looking at the list of what is available (see below), and what will be coming in the future, it looks like we might be applying roles to a huge amount of tags on our pages. Its not an issue especially if it brings benefit to users using readers etc Also, a side question, will search engines give any benefits to sites using WAI-ARIA? • Small app structure review

  Hi, I would be grateful if someone could review following: I have a main Form app. OnLoad it displays with Docstyle=Fill the main menu which is done by user control. If the user selects a choice in that Menu control, it fires an event (with one parameter Choice) which main forms reacts on. If the choice is run the app, it closes the user control (dipose) and call method starting the app. If the choice is to quit, it calls Application.Exit. Is that alright form programmers point of view?

• Solaris 11.2: Functional Deprecation

  In Solaris 11.1, I updated the system headers to enable use of several attributes on functions, including noreturn and printf format, to give compilers and static analyzers more information about how they are used to give better warnings when building code. In Solaris 11.2, I've gone back in and added one more attribute to a number of functions in the system headers: __attribute__((__deprecated__)). This is used to warn people building software that they’re using function calls we recommend no longer be used. While in many cases the Solaris Binary Compatibility Guarantee means we won't ever remove these functions from the system libraries, we still want to discourage their use. I made passes through both the POSIX and C standards, and some of the Solaris architecture review cases to come up with an initial list which the Solaris architecture review committee accepted to start with. This set is by no means a complete list of Obsolete function interfaces, but should be a reasonable start at functions that are well documented as deprecated and seem useful to warn developers away from. More functions may be flagged in the future as they get deprecated, or if further passes are made through our existing deprecated functions to flag more of them. • Multiple domain names with pages linking to one website

  Hello, I work for a company who have been redesigning their company website. I have been asked to register loads of domain names that contain the keywords that they want to use on the original site. Each of these domain names will contain a one page website with a destription of what the company offers and a link saying something along the lines of 'click here for more infmormation' which then takes you to the main site. The idea being the main site will then be recieving a lot of inbound links and hopefully rise in the google rankings, not to mention bring in more customers who have come to the site from all the other domain names who wouldn't have normally got to the website because it wasn't ranked on the first page. Is this a good idea or will Google see this as spam and penalise the main site for having loads of links to it from one page websites hosted on the same nameserver?   I have installed Hadoop 1.0.3 in Ubuntu 12.04 version (64bit) based on michael-noll.com/tutorials/running-hadoop-on-ubuntu-linux-single-node-cluster/ . I am trying to run a mapreduce job using the wordcount example. Running the command hduser@ubuntu: $/usr/local/hadoop/bin/hadoop jar hadoop-examples-1.0.3.jar wordcount /user/hduser/gutenberg /user/hduser/gutenberg-output gives the following error: Warning: $HADOOP_HOME is deprecated. Exception in thread "main" java.io.IOException: Error opening job jar: hadoop-examples-1.0.3.jar at org.apache.hadoop.util.RunJar.main(RunJar.java:90) Caused by: java.util.zip.ZipException: error in opening zip file at java.util.zip.ZipFile.open(Native Method) at java.util.zip.ZipFile.<init>(ZipFile.java:131) at java.util.jar.JarFile.<init>(JarFile.java:150) at java.util.jar.JarFile.<init>(JarFile.java:87) at org.apache.hadoop.util.RunJar.main(RunJar.java:88) Thanks in advance.
