  on my win7, I run compmgmt.msc and drill to a private queue folder ... when I click "Queue messages" or "Journal messages", I either see the messages, or "There are no items to show in this view". BUT, on win2008 R2 Enterprise, I run compmgmt.msc and drill to a private queue folder ... when I click "Queue messages" or "Journal messages", I see "There are no items to show in this view" which AFAIK is correct BUT I get this unwanted dialog: Message Queuing x ------------------------ (X) The list of messages cannot be retrieved. Error: Access is denied. [[ OK ]] On both computers, I'm a member of local Administrators. I'm concerned as a developer because I'm very soon going to be testing WCF/MSMQ software that works on my Win7 laptop. How to I get past this denied access problem? thnx / g.

• How to use auto-discovery with iDRAC Enterprise?

  All I want to do is: have "auto discovery" enabled on my iDRAC enterprise at the factory rack the server, cable iDRAC to dhcp-enabled management network have the iDRAC DHCP, find the "Provisioning Server", and get updated with login credentials (for us to use with racadm, idrac webui, etc.) I don't need to do any configuring of the system, install OS, or anything else. I just want idrac to dhcp out of the box, and end up with an account that can be used to login. All the docs I can find on Dell's site refer to a "Provisioning Server", but I honestly can't tell if they have some reference product, or if they only have software that "integrates" with other vendor's existing management systems. I'd be happy to set up whatever is needed, I just can't find something that explicitly describes the process (only references to the fact that it is supported).

• HOWTO Catch/Redirect all outgoing e-mails on Win2K and Redhat Enterprise

  Background: I am integrating two separate web application that are developed in ASP .NET and JSP/Struts. As such, they are hosted on two different server technologies, namely Win2K3 and Redhat Enterprise Server 5.5. Problem: There is a copy of production data in my test environment with real e-mail addresses. I need to test the e-mail functionality of these applications, but I do not want them to send out actual e-mails. Is there a way to catch and redirect all outgoing e-mails? Ideally, I would like to send all outgoing e-mails to another e-mail (i.e., [email protected]) so my testers can look at them. Thanks for the help in advance!

• upgrade from windows server 2008 r2 std to enterprise

  We recently had to upgrade our servers from Win 2008 R2 Standard to Enterprise. The upgrade method was DISM. After the upgrade, a lot of weird things started to happen. Though Windows says it's been properly activated, we lost 1) RDP settings (disappeared from the Remote Setting tab of Properties of My Computer) 2) The option to join a domain is grayed out 3) The server had to 2 physical processors 12 cores each. Now, task manager or windows sees only 1 processor (or only 12 cores) 4) the amount of physical ram on this sever is 32 GB (Windows reports only 4 GB are usable) Has anyone encountered this before ?   I live in college housing at a university with wifi available. unfortunately, my bedroom(where I'd like to place my PC) gets little to no reception. I'd like to place a router in the strongest spot and rebroadcast. I understand this can be done with DD-WRT/etc, but this particular network is WPA Enterprise with my own personal username/password. I can't find any concrete evidence that I can get my router to act as a repeater for this encryption. I don't currently have a router to test it on, otherwise this would be easy, I just don't want to buy a router if it will be worthless to me. Thanks for your help

  Hi everyone, After more than 12 years working with computers, I am still way behind when it comes to networking, so please bear with me :) As of this Christmas, the number of computers in my home has increased and it's well about time to upgrade the current network hardware in order to offer LAN connection to all computers. Trying to find a cheap solution, A close friend offered me a great deal on a "enterprise-class" Switch from HP (more LAN ports than I would ever need), at the same price as what a brand new Netgear or D-link Switch with 6/8 ports would cost me in retail. Would it be common sense to get this one and start using it immediately and never again have to worry about running out of LAN connections, or am I taking on a bigger bite than what I could chew?

• Modify database for the SharePoint 2010 Enterprise Search administration web site

  Does anyone know how to modify the database settings for the Enterprise Search administration web site? When you configure the service application via Central Administration, SharePoint just decides to use the default database server and gives a name like Enterprise_Search_DB_Identifier. I want to modify this to atleast give a name that makes scense like SharePoint_Search_AdministrationWebContent, and it might be nice to move it to the database server that is hosting the crawl and property database. I figured out how to move the Central Administration web content database, but this database is not listed as a content database. It is listed as a Microsoft.Office.Server.Search.Administration.SearchAdminDatabase. I have not tested to see if the same process would work but because you are doing a RemoveContentDatabase and NewContentDatabase, I would assume not. Any help would be appreciated.

• SqlServer2005 Enterprise Fast Recovery, SqlAgent Availability, and Replication

  I have a database under SqlServer2005 Enterprise 64bit sp3, that is in phase 3 of 3 of recovery after a reboot without normal shutdown. It looks like with fast Recovery, the database became available when recovery moved into phase 3. However, it seems (based on message in SqlAgent log), that SqlAgent is "started" but not available to run jobs until recovery completes. I have other databases on the same server that are transactional publications. It seems to me that if I let users update the published databases, transactions will start to build up in the log, but won't be moved to the distribution database or onto the subscribers because SqlAgent isn't running jobs.   I'm running Windows-7 enterprise on a dell Laptop, and I'd like to sync the entire user directory structure between two users. Background: I am an existing user on the computer, and soon I'll be sharing the computer with an employee. I want everything from my account to overwrite the other, while anything he does is mirrored on mine. I'm not worried about security because nothing vital is on the computer. Both accounts are administrators, and I have already tried to use hard links to accomplish this. However the prompt leaves me with "Access Denied". Is what I'm trying to do possible, and if so what steps must be done to accomplish it?

I'm trying to upgrade to 8.1 preview, so I downloaded the 64 bits ISO of Windows 8.1 preview (french):fr_windows_8.1_preview_x64_dvd_2358804.iso My I start the setup from the media, the setup does not propose me to upgrade and keep my applications. Only Keep personal files only and Keep nothing are available. When I read the technet page Supported Upgrade Path, upgrading and keeping everything should be proposed. Why can't I upgrade?   First some software details: Thin client: Wyse C10LE Citrix - Windows Terminal Services - Windows Server 2008 Enterprise desktop I have a user with a very strange problem. When he locks his screen with Win+L, Windows claims he's entering wrong password when he tries to log back in. The only solution is to hard reboot the WYSE, and log back in. This reboot doesn't kill his Windows session. I've checked for errors in keyboard settings (wrong layout etc), nothing found. I suspect errors in his profile/errors in AD. No other users in the domain has this problem. EDIT: Sorry, it's NOT Win R2. Plain Windows Sever 2008

• Error sysprepping Windows 8 Enterprise 90-day trial

  I am using the Windows 8 Enterprise 90-day trial to evaluate the latest version of Windows for a private school. The way I work is that I use sysprep to prepare an generalized image, then I clone it to the school's computers. When I follow the instructions and try sysprep on my installation of Windows 8 in VirtualBox, sysprep thinks briefly and gives me an error message: Fatal error occurred while trying to sysprep the machine. Once I acknowledge it, sysprep closes. I checked the Windows Event Log, and there's nothing there that I could see. I also followed some instructions to cure this problem, but nothing changed. The error remains. My best guess is that the 90-day trial prohibits the use of sysprep, but I can't be sure. It might also be my use of VirtualBox, or who-knows-what. Has anyone had success with this, or encountered the same issue on real hardware?

• How to provide custom connection string for Logging Application Block instead of using the one in .c

  I'm modifying an existing winforms application to use the Logging Application Block. For historical reasons this app gets its main database connection string from the registry, and I'd like the Logging Application Block to use the same details for logging to the database. How can I do this? The approaches i can think of are: 1) Create a new TraceListener and implement the same sort of functionality as in FormattedDatabaseTraceListener. If I take this approach, should I inherit from CustomTraceListener, and if so how do I pass an attribute of the formatter to use? 2) Create a new ConfigurationSource that provides different details when asked for the database connection. All other requests would be passed through to a FileConfigurationSource, but when asked for the database connection details the object would read the appropriate bits from the registry instead. but it's not obvious which is more appropriate, or how to go about doing it. There never seems to be a clear delineation between the three. Or there's a lot of domain crossover between the three. Actually, another I've seen while looking around here on Stackoverflow has been "Solutions Architect" as well. But that one doesn't seem to be so prevalent in other places.   I'm trying to convince my co-workers to switch from a web site project to a web application project, because I want the use of the project file. However I can't diffuse this argument against: The web site project allows each page to be compiled into a single dll. Their argument is this enables easy fixing of errors found after publishing. This is contrast to how the web application project compiles all code behind into a single dll. Is updating a single page's dll essentially different to updating the entire site's dll? Is there some way to compile each page's code behind into a seperate dll in the web application project? Are there some prohibitive (performance,memory?) costs to compiling each page's code behind into seperate dll's that we are unaware of? Why is the feature(?) to compile each page to separate dlls in web site projects and not web app projects?

• Git-Based Source Control in the Enterprise: Suggested Tools and Practices?

  I use git for personal projects and think it's great. It's fast, flexible, powerful, and works great for remote development. But now it's mandated at work and, frankly, we're having problems. Out of the box, git doesn't seem to work well for centralized development in a large (20+ developer) organization with developers of varying abilities and levels of git sophistication - especially compared with other source-control systems like Perforce or Subversion, which are aimed at that kind of environment. (Yes, I know, Linus never intended it for that.) But - for political reasons - we're stuck with git, even if it sucks for what we're trying to do with it. Here are some of the things we're seeing: The GUI tools aren't mature Using the command line tools, it's far to easy to screw up a merge and obliterate someone else's changes It doesn't offer per-user repository permissions beyond global read-only or read-write privileges If you have a permission to ANY part of a repository, you can do that same thing to EVERY part of the repository, so you can't do something like make a small-group tracking branch on the central server that other people can't mess with. Workflows other than "anything goes" or "benevolent dictator" are hard to encourage, let alone enforce It's not clear whether it's better to use a single big repository (which lets everybody mess with everything) or lots of per-component repositories (which make for headaches trying to synchronize versions). With multiple repositories, it's also not clear how to replicate all the sources someone else has by pulling from the central repository, or to do something like get everything as of 4:30 yesterday afternoon. However, I've heard that people are using git successfully in large development organizations. If you're in that situation - or if you generally have tools, tips and tricks for making it easier and more productive to use git in a large organization where some folks are not command line fans - I'd love to hear what you have to suggest. BTW, I've asked a version of this question already on LinkedIn, and got no real answers but lots of "gosh, I'd love to know that too!"

  Our application includes a default set of data. The default data includes coefficients and other factors that are unlikely to ever change but still need to be update-able by the user. Currently, the original default data is stored as a populated class within the application. Data updates are stored to an external XML file. This design allows us to include a "reset" feature to restore the original default data. Our rationale for not storing defaults externally [e.g. XML file] was to minimize the risk of being altered. The overall volume of data doesn't warrant a database. Is there a standard practice for storing "default" application data?

• Do you have to call .Save() when modifying a application setting that is bound to a control property

  I am programming in .NET I have an application setting of type string. On my form I have a textbox. I bound the text property of the textbox to my application setting. If I type something in the textbox it changes the value that is held in the Application setting but the next time I start the program it goes back to the default value. Do I need to call Properties.Settings.Default.Save(); after the text is entered for the new value to be saved? Shouldn't it do this automatically? Is there a way I can make it do it automatically?
