  • Apache multiple vhost logs, stored locally and sent to remote logstash

    I'm investigating centralised logging and it seems there's so many different ways this can be done. I don't want to run logstash as a log "sender", preferring to keep the web servers as lean and simple possible. So that means either using syslog, syslog-ng or the one I'm testing now, rsyslog. But I would like to have separate vhost log files on the web server, in addition to these logs being sent to a remote log collector. I've tested rsyslog using the imfile module to watch the Apache log files, but this means I have to hard-code each vhost log file into my rsyslog.conf. Not ideal as people will invariably forget when they add/remove sites on the server. The reason I'm using rsyslog's imfile is that Apache doesn't appear to let you log to file and syslog. And I want to keep vhost-specific log files on the web server. So how can I do this? Is there a way of having rsyslog produce local log files and forward the logs to a remote collector? I am prepared to change my Apache config to log to a single access/error log for all vhosts, so long as there are vhost-specific log files produced somewhere on the web server machine. I just don't want to lose any logging info if the remote log collector can't be contacted for any reason. Any comments/suggestions? Cheers, B

  • How can I store logs and meet compliance requirements for free?

    I am trying to keep long-term logs of an app in such a way, that it could plausibly demonstrated to third parties/court that the application has processed certain data at a given time. The data can be represented in XML or text format. A simple gzipped log is not plausible, as I may have added or modified data afterwards, whereas an external logging service would be an overkill. Cost is an issue, we are not dealing with financial data or so, but rather some simple user generated content, where some malicious users tried to blame the operator in the past when things escalated and went to court. My question: Is there some kind of signing software for Linux that signs each element of a log in such a way, that it can be easily shown that no element can be added or modified afterwards? Plug-Ins into some free Splunk Alternatives would be fine too. Ideally the software I am looking for should be under a GPL or similar license. I could probably achive something like this by using PGP/GPG sgning functions and including the previous elements signituares within the following element, but I would prefer to use some program where you do not have to argue about the validity of your own code. Note to mods: I am not asking this question on Stackoverflow, because I am not looking for writing own code for reasons described above. I think this question rather fits into serverfault than superuser, as server-side logging software is discussed rather here than on superuser.

  • Logging exceptions in WCF with IErrorHandler inside HandleError or ProvideFault?

    I'm using IErrorHandler to do exception handling in WCF and now I want to log the exceptions, along with the stack trace and the user that caused the exception. I've read everywhere to put the logging in the HandleError method, and not the ProvideFault method. My question is, why? The only way I can see to get the user that caused the exception is: OperationContext.Current.IncomingMessageProperties.Security.ServiceSecurityContext.PrimaryIdentity ...But this only seems to work inside ProvideFault, and not inside HandleError. Is there a way to get the user inside HandleError?

    I use a legacy library that writes logs using log4j. My default log4j.properties file directs the log to the console, but in some specific functions of my main program, I would like to disable logging altogether (from all classes). I tried this: Logger.getLogger(BasicImplementation.class.getName()).setLevel(Level.OFF); where "BasicImplementation" is one of the main classes that does logging, but it didn't work - the logs are still written to the console.   • apt-get fails to upgrade, install, remove etc

    I upgraded from 11.10 to 12.04, had no issues that I noticed. Recently tried to install something via software center, but it was throwing errors. Changed to trying to sudo apt-get install instead but again no luck. I've genuinely tried as much as I know to fix this, but I can't so I figured I'd ask here. I've done sudo apt-get update successfully but sudo apt-get upgrade failed with... You might want to run ‘apt-get -f install’ to correct these.   • PHP crashing on occasion - APC error?

    Any thoughts on this? We've had this happen twice recently. Basically, every page throws a fatal error, fixed by an apache restart. Here's what's in the log, repeated over and over.     I had to deploy an application that was not written by me onto the above configuration. It is a rather bizarre hybrid of asp.net and classic asp and it's the classic asp that is proving troublesome. The client is having problems with 500 Internal Server Errors appearing and I can see some of these in the logs but I only get the error code and the page name but little else. What I would like to see is the actual error message to at least give me an idea what is going on (or not going on, depending on your point of view) I don't want to display errors in the browser as I don't know the code well enough and this could (for all I know) display some crazy code where the db password is hard-coded into the site.
