  • What is the best way to handle multiple actions?

    Like most web applications you have a method that gets called when you log in. There are a few things that may need to get done when logged in and over time this may increase. eg. logging, welcome emails, maintenance. Should events be used to do this or is there a better way?? I'm using C# and ASP.net MVC.

    When considering social web app architecture, is it a better approach to document user social patterns in a database or in logs? I thought for sure that behavior, actions, events would be strictly database stored but I noticed that some of the larger social sites out there also track a lot by logging what happens. Is it good practice to store prominent data about users in a database and since thousands of user actions can be spawned easily, should they be simply logged?

  • Setting jvmargs in log4j.properties file

    Hey This is a bit of a weird request but I am trying to set some jvmargs in the log4j.properties file. At present I use ant to for example set some args.... jvmarg value="-Dmail.smtp.socketFactory.port=465" ... but it would be great to group a few of these logging relevant arguments into the .properties file. Does anyone know how to do this? Thanks in advance!

During the knowledge transfer, it was told to me that all the events are logged to the database. I don't find the database interface useful to search for logs and sometimes they don't even log(I might be wrong).     I need to manage the trace files for a database on Sql Server 2005 Express Edition. The C2 audit logging is turned on for the database, and the files that it's creating are eating up a lot of space. Can this be done from within Sql Server, or do I need to write a service to monitor these files and take the appropriate actions? I found the [master].[sys].[trace] table with the trace file properties. Does anyone know the meaning of the fields in this table?

I reviewed Django logging and although I was impressed with its flexibility and configurability for advanced uses, I'm still stumped with how to handle my simple use-case.   • Logging IP address for uniqueness without storing the IP address itself for privacy

    In a web application when logging some data I'd like to make sure I can identify data that came at differetn times but from the same IP address. On the other hand for privacy concerns as the data will be released publicly I'd like to make sure the actual IP cannot be retrieved. So I need some one way mapping of the IP addresses to some other strings that ensures 1-1 mapping. If I understand correctly then MD5, SHA1 or SHA256 could be a solution. I wonder if they are not too expensive in terms of processing needed? I'd be interested in any solution though if there is implementation in Perl that would be even better.

    I am getting the following error: Could not load file or assembly 'System.Web.DynamicData, Version=3.5.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=31bf3856ad364e35' or one of its dependencies. The system cannot find the file specified. I've researched the problem and some of the solutions are pointing to Turning on Assembly Binding Logging. I'm confused as to what this error is. So my question: *What does this error mean and how do I resolve it? I am not hosting the site in a shared hosting scenario, it is on a single server running .NET Framework 3.5.0 using IIS 6.0 Edit .Net Framework 3.5 SP 1 isn't installed on the server. The missing assemblies are apart of that Service Pack.

    I have written a C# Windows Forms application, not a service (it is only used when the user is logged in and has a graphical user interface) that has a background thread running in an infinite loop. When I try shutting down Windows (7) however, it tells me the program is preventing it from shutting down or logging off and asks me whether I want to force a shutdown. Now, is there any possibility for my program to become aware (get a handler) of Windows trying to quit it or to log off? So, what I need is to make the application realize when Windows tries to quit.   • Logging from symfony's model layer

    I'm currently working on a project with symfony 1.4 and Doctrine 1.2. I'm looking for a proper way to do logging from the model layer. In some model classes I use the record hook postSave() to create a ZIP file using exec() (since PHP zip doesn't provide for storage method 'Stored'). To be sure that everythings works fine I check the return code and log an error if something goes wrong. My first naive approach was to do it like this: if ($returnCode != 0) { sfContext::getInstance()->getLogger()->debug(...); } As you know, this doesn't work so well because sfContext belongs to the controller layer and shouldn't be used from the model layer. My next try was to use the model's constructor to pass in an sfLogger instance, but this doesn't work due to Doctrine 1.2 reserving the constructor for internal use (Doctrine 1.2 Documentation). I'm looking forward for your suggestions!

    Hi all, I have a login page in my android app. I want to prevent the user after logging in to come back to the login page. Also, when the user reopens the app, if he has logged in before, I want to go directly to the main page without having to go to the login page. What the best way of doing that? One idea I thought of is to save the login parameters in a cookie, and then, when the app is reopens, if the cookie contains some login information, I inflate the main page, otherwise, I inflate the login page.     what kind of logging frame work or API to use for swing applications which is used by multiple users in Unix. Is it possible to log all verbose/exception in one file per day or event one user one file per day? Since the user can open the same application with multiple instance. I also have another solution is to save the exceptions into database. But if I miss the excetpions, those will not be saved in DB. anybody has better solutions? Thank you very much!

    I'm having a hard time getting this to work. I use the following to generate the logout url: $logout = "https://www.facebook.com/logout.php?next=" . urlencode('http://' . $_SERVER['SERVER_NAME'] . $_SERVER['PHP_SELF']) . "&access_token=" . $facebook->getAccessToken(); Which generates the correct (worked with the last version) url: https://www.facebook.com/logout.php?next=http%3A%2F%2F...&access_token=AA....ZD However this does not actually log the user out. I tried using $facebook->getLogoutUrl(array('next' => 'myurl')) which generates pretty much the same url. This also did not work. I am lost as to why its not logging the user out. I actually tried manually putting the address into the address bar but it redirects me to the Facebook homepage.

    I'm a Django beginner. My site - let's call it abc.com - works fine, letting users log in and out (having originally registered via Django registratiaon). If it's relevant, my virtuahosts file has ServerName abc.com and ServerAlias www.abc.com directives. I don't want my visitors to sense that both abc.com and www.abc.com exist, and so discovered Django's prepend_www setting, which works as intended. In addition to working as intended, however, there's a side effect that disables logging in and out when visiting the www. variant of my site.

Its basically a logging table to log the itemcount each time it changes. I get the most recent ItemCount for each Person like this: SELECT * FROM table a INNER JOIN ( SELECT MAX(index) as i FROM table GROUP BY PersonID) b ON a.index = b.i; What I want to do is get get the most recent record for each PersonID that is at least 24 hours older than the most recent record for each Person ID. Then I want to take the difference in ItemCount between these two to get a change in itemcount for each person over the last 24 hours: personID ChangeInItemCountOverAtLeast24Hours 1 3 2 -11 3 6 Im sort of stuck with what to do next. How can I join another itemcount based on latest adjusted timestamp of individual rows?
