  • Disabling the Driver Region on a Mac

    So, this is the first time I try to watch a DVD disc on my (new) Mac and I wonder if I can keep it as fresh-new by not choosing any region and just play discs from anywhere. I understand the media industry made that lock for copyright and whatever, but do I absolutely have to choose a region to be able to play disks, even if I got original ones from different places? Why can I "change region" just 5 times, why even allowing changing? Also, on a side-note, I wonder how to disable the regular DVD Player.

I'm not really a perl user beyond enjoying it for massive directory-recursive find/replace operations within text files, so I haven't much of an idea what the permissions here are supposed to look like, and I'm not really sure how to go about determining how macports has gone and installed perl this way when it's otherwise worked without failure for years now. Does anyone have any recommendations for the sanest path towards rectifying this issue? Also, is there any interesting reason as to why the macports default for the perl5 port installs 5.12.4, and not 5.16.0, which has to be explicitly installed via the perl5.16 port? Thanks again!

  • rsync not copying hard links

    I have two computers (both MacBook Airs) for which I sync one directory tree in both, but not the entire hard drive or any other directories. Let's say on computer A the directory is /Users/aellett/projects Let's say on computer B the directory is /Users/bellett/projects Generally, I'll log into computer B and then remotely connect to computer A as user 'aellett'. As super user I sync the two project directories as follows: rsync -av /Volumes/aellett/projects/ /Users/bellett/projects/ and this works as expected. On both computers I have another file letter.txt in a different directory which is not getting synced. Let's say on computer A the file is found in /Users/aellett/letters On computer B the file is found in /Users/bellett/correspondence Generally, I don't want to share what's not included in /Users/<username>/projects. But I do want to share this particular file. So on both computer I made a correspondence directory in projects. And then I made hard links as follows On computer A: ln /Users/aellett/letters/letter.txt /Users/aellett/projects/correspondence/letter.txt On computer B: ln /Users/bellett/correspondence/letter.txt /Users/aellett/projects/correspondence/letter.txt The next time I synced the two computers I did the following rsync -av -H /Volumes/aellett/projects/ /Users/bellett/projects/ When I checked on computer B, /Users/bellett/projects/correspondence/letter.txt was correctly synced. But, the hardlink to /Users/bellett/correspondence/letter.txt was no longer there. In other words, /Users/bellett/projects/correspondence/letter.txt was identical to /Users/aellett/projects/correspondence/letter.txt but it differed from /Users/bellett/correspondence/letter.txt. Since these two files were hard linked on both computers, I expected them to still have the hard link. Why are my hard links not being preserved?

  • Mac OS X CD ripping speed

    I am using vobcopy (installed via macports) to rip DVDs on a mac. I have been doing this for a while on linux with no problems. On the mac however, it is VERY slow. I am guessing that somehow the DVD drive is being limited to 1x in order to keep noise and power consumption down during playback. Is there a way to over ride this? Update: It is MUCH slower than 1x. It has taken me about an hour to copy 300MB Notes: While I appreciate all suggestions, I am not looking for "Have you tried HandBrake?". I am looking for a solution to copy the contents of a DVD, not transcode them. Also, I am launching vobcopy from an apple script that gets executed on DVD insertion, so a GUI solution is not desirable.

  • Running Webapp on Mac in UTC (either changing MacBook timezone or tomcat timezone)

    To run my web app, I need to set my timezone to UTC on my MacBook. I can do this temporarily by opening a Konsole and entering sudo ln -sf /usr/share/zoneinfo/UTC /etc/localtime However, my timezone returns to normal when I restart my machine! Any advice? Edit : The response to this question by 'Celada' implies that I can just make my Server UTC. I am using Apache Tomcat 7. Adding to Celada's response, how can I make it UTC? Update - 3rd April : Following Celada's response, I have tried adding SetEnv TZ UTC at the top of startup.sh. This didn't seem to make a difference. After some research, I tried adding export JAVA_OPTS="-Duser.timezone=UTC" to startup.sh, but this too had no effect. Am I adding the correct command to the correct file?

  • adding mongo to path

    Bit of a noob question. I have downloaded MongoDb and installed it here /Users/mike/downloads/mongodb In order to start it, I then have to 'cd' into the 'bin' /Users/mike/downloads/mongodb/bin and run ./mongod (to start the database) and ./mongo (to start the mongo shell) The problem is that I can only work with python and ruby scripts using the mongo shell if I have those scripts stored in the same bin directory, and I don't think that's the ideal set up. Will exporting the path allow me to access mongo from outside the bin? For example, I would prefer to have my ruby scripts in /sites/ruby and be able to access mongo by starting ruby in /sites/ruby. If exporting to path is the solution, how do I do that. I'm using a mac

  • Mac OS X: remove write-protect flag from file in Terminal

    Hi, I have a file on a FAT32 volume which is shown as write-protected in Finder (so I cannot move it). Removing that write-protected flag in the information dialog works just fine. However, I have many more such files and I thus want to do it via Terminal. I already tried via 'chmod +w' but that didn't worked. 'ls -la' showed me that they are already just fine ("-rwxrwxrwx 1 az az " where az is my user account). Then I thought this might be stored in some xattr properties but 'xattr -l' didn't gave me any entry. Then I thought this might be some ACL setting (whereby I thought they would be stored as xattr but let's try it anyway) - and some Google search returned me something with 'chmod -a' or 'chmod -i' or so. All these tries only give me chmod: No ACL currently associated with file" or chmod: Failed to set ACL on file...: Operation not permitted". But I definitly have no write access to the file because I cannot move it or do any other change to it (in Terminal). Removing the write-access flag in Finder solves that.

    I installed MacPorts on OS X 10.5 and I found out that when I connect to the computer using SSH and use mc - Midnight Commander - the HOME and END keys do not work. I have to mention that I'm using putty and I am able to use the keyboard very well on Linux machines like Fedora, Ubuntu,... Here is putty keyboard configuration (a configuration I found to be optimal over time): Backspace key: 127 Home/End keys: Standard Function keys: Xterm R6 Cursor keys: Normal Numpad: normal Terminal type string: xterm-color I'm looking for a command line solution/script that does these changes, this make much easier to create a prepare OS script for configuring a new OS.

  • greyed out folder in OS X

    Hi all, I installed the intel compiler on my Mac (10.6), and it installed fine, but the folder in which it is installed (/opt, i.e. at the root) is not visible by default, and when I use the Finder "go to" feature, it appears, but as greyed out. What does it mean? I also checked out the permissions, and the only odd thing is that there is an @ at the end of permissions. Any ideas? I'm asking because while the intel compiler is installed (all the files are there), I cant use it from XCode (3.2), and I'm wondering whether this could be why. Thank in advance A

    I love idea of TextMate that any directory opened in it is already a project. But sometimes I it would be good to ignore files for certain dir and I don't like idea of creating project file in that dir or remembering how I named project file in some special folder like ~/.tmproject. Is there some sort of plugin or something like this which will allow me to ignore files in dir? Perfect solution would be reading .gitignore file.

    I am coming from Linux and trying to get a Mac to do what I want it to do. The question is what is the best tool to use. I want to mount (unmount) several remote disks. If I go into a terminal I can do the trick by mount -t smbfs //username:pass@addr /Users/me/RemoteDisks/mnt1 Since I want to mount several disks I would like to put all of the information into a file, store it in Documents/subfolder and make a link to it on the desktop (or somewhere better, if there is a better place). At the moment I have manually run the appropriate command in the terminal and the remote disk is mounted and I see its contents. What I need is a one click method to run a file to mount all the disks. I tried Apple script but that didn't like my commands. I don't know exactly what it is expecting to see and perhaps Apple script is the wrong tool. I have no problems in Linux, but the Mac is new to me and I don't know what I should be using.     Is there a way to auto-hide the OS X menu bar, like is possible with the Dock? There was an application "Menufela" that did this for Tiger, but I'm not aware of anything similar for Leopard/Snow Leopard.. I'm almost certain this is (programatically) doable, because in full-screen applications the menu bar is hidden, and reappears when you mouse the mouse is at the top of the screen..   • Where do I find a color profile for my MacBook Pro display?

    I installed Windows 7 on my MacBook Pro, overwriting OSX Lion. The screen has a blue tint due to lack of a calibrated color profile. I once used the "Color LCD" ICC profile from the OSX partition and it worked great, but I've since lost it since I decided to overwrite OSX completely. I tried the manual calibration in Windows 7 but I just can't seem to get it right like it was while using the color profile that was on the OSX partition. All Google tells me is where to find the ICC profile in OSX, and to copy it over. Do I have to reinstall OSX just for the color profile? Even if I do, where does the profile actually come from? Is it on the OSX disk, or is it somehow retrieved from the hardware itself? Is there a way to get it without reinstalling OSX? Thanks!

  • Need to find jni.h in cmake on Mac

    I am trying to make VTK compile on a Mac Air machine. I am using CMake 2.8-9, using Xcode4 as the generator. If I press the Configure button with VTK_WRAP_JAVA not checked, it will go with no errors. However I definitely need to use the wrap java since my main program is in Java and I need to get to VTK which is c++. As soon as I check the wrap Java, I get Could NOT find JNI. It apparently is looking for jni.h which in Linux there is no problem finding, but in the Mac it apparently can't find it.     I've run into an odd problem where Automtor.app on Snow Leopard crashes on launch. At some point in the past, I put a copy of iPhoto.app into my public directory to copy over to another machine. Now, Automator.app won't run unless my public directory has a copy of iPhoto.app in it. If I remove it, Automator.app crashes on launch.   • Root directory permissions on Mac OS X 10.6?

    Hi, I was wondering if it's normal that the root directory / should be owned by “root”. I get asked for my password every time I want to do something there (e.g. save a file, create a directory) and I don't remember this happening before (though this may just be my faulty memory).   • Mac Book Pro wakes up in my backpack

    This has happened to me twice: I press the power button on my Mac Book Pro, choose sleep, close it, unplug everything, confirm that is off (by pressing my ear to it) and put it in my bag. Some minutes later, the laptop wakes up by itself. Both times I caught it in time. The second time it was so hot I couldn't touch some parts -- it refused to actually wake up, and the screen was blank. Restarting it worked though. Any ideas what might be going on and/or how to prevent this? More details: It's a Mac Book Pro unibody 15" from 2009.
