• windows server 2008 r2 remote desktop issue with roaming clients

  I have the following situation : a Dell windows server 2008 R2 computer, with remote desktop services installed. I have installed a java application making use of a PostgreSql database, and made this application available for clients using RDP. Clients are standard Win XP pc's and Psion Neo handheld devices running Windows CE 5 Pro. The application works fine for clients on standard XP pc's connected directly via cat 5E Ethernet cable to a Dell Powerconnect 2816 switch. The Psion Neo clients connect wireless to the network via Motorola AP6532 access points. These access points are connected via a POE adapter to the same switch as the XP pc's. The Psion devices can connect without any problem and very quickly to the server and to the application using RDP. So far, so good. When the Psion devices move around in the warehouse, and they roam from one access point to the other, the RDP session on the client freezes for approx 1 minute, and then it automatically resumes the session. This freezing is very annoying for the users. Can anyone help in solving this issue? Update (August 9) : After re-installing the access points we have a working situation, but only when connecting to the RDP host : * via a Win Xp SP3 laptop * via a Symbol MC9190 Win CE 6 mobile device When roaming we notice a small hick-up less then 1 second, what is very acceptable. With the Psion NEO it's still not working, when roaming the screen freezes from 2 to 30 seconds. The RDP client on the win xp sp3 laptop and the symbol mc9190 is version 6.0. The RDP client on the neo is version 5.2. I have changed the security layer on the RDP host to RDP security layer (based on forums on the internet), because older RDP clients seem to have issues with the RDP 7.1 protocol on the Win server 2088 R2. Psion adviced us to do some network logging activity on the different devices. We made this logging via wireshark, and based on this the conclusion of Psion is that the server fails in handling tcp-requests. Can anyone give me a second opinion by analysing the wireshark loggings. Thanks in advance. Regards Patrick

  Internet Explorer is often decried as the worst browser for web developers, but IE8 actually offers a very nice set of developer tools.  Here we’ll look at a unique way to use them to edit the text on any webpage. How to edit text in a webpage IE8’s developer tools make it easy to make changes to a webpage and view them directly.  Simply browse to the webpage of your choice, and press the F12 key on your keyboard.  Alternately, you can click the Tools button, and select Developer tools from the list. This opens the developer tools.  To do our editing, we want to select the mouse button on the toolbar “Select Element by Click” tool. Now, click on any spot of the webpage in IE8 that you want to edit.  Here, let’s edit the footer of Google.com.  Notice it places a blue box around any element you hover over to make it easy to choose exactly what you want to edit. In the developer tools window, the element you selected before is now highlighted.  Click the plus button beside that entry if the text you want to edit is not visible.   Now, click the text you wish to change, and enter what you wish in the box.  For fun, we changed the copyright to say “©2010 Microsoft”. Go back to IE to see the changes on the page! You can also change a link on a page this way: Or you can even change the text on a button: Here’s our edited Google.com: This may be fun for playing a trick on someone or simply for a funny screenshot, but it can be very useful, too.  You could test how changes in fontsize would change how a website looks, or see how a button would look with a different label.  It can also be useful when taking screenshots.  For instance, if I want to show a friend how to do something in Gmail but don’t want to reveal my email address, I could edit the text on the top right before I took the screenshot.  Here I changed my Gmail address to [email protected]. Please note that the changes will disappear when you reload the page.  You can save your changes from the developer tools window, though, and reopen the page from your computer if you wish. • Windows Phone 7 Series - Tools and Resources

  Unless you've been living in the caves of Lascaux for the past couple of days, you probably know what's happening in the world of Windows Phone. Microsoft unveiled the developer tools required to develop applications and games for Windows Phone 7 at MIX10 a couple of days back. Silverlight and XNA being the major frameworks, no big surprise there. And the best news of all is that all the development tools are free! So if you are planning to develop apps for Windows Phone 7, read on. The first place, or more appropriately hub, for you is the Windows Phone Developer Portal. It has most of the information you need to get you started. Now there is a ton of information available at other places too. In this post, I take time to put all the information that I found useful at one place, and I'll keep updating this as and when I find new stuff.   Setting up the development environment 1. Install Windows Phone Developer Tools CTP (Community Technology Preview) This will install Visual Studio 2010 Express, Silverlight, XNA framework and emulator for Windows Phone 7. It also installs a few support tools. 2. Expression Blend 4 for Windows Phone:     - Install Expression Blend 4 beta     - Install Expression Blend Add-in Preview for Windows Phone     - Install Expression Blend SDK Preview for Windows Phone Installing the above tools should set your machine up for development. I installed the tools on my Windows Vista SP1 machine and the process went smoothly without running into any major hitch. Note that the tools won't install on Windows XP, read the release notes of the CTP. Resources and Documentation 1. Microsoft Windows Phone 7 Series Developer Training Kit 2. Programming Windows Phone 7 Series by Charles Petzold. Contains few chapters only. Gives a good preview. 3. MSDN documentation for Windows Phone 7 Development 4. A sample chapter from Learning Windows Phone Programming [PDF] by Yochay Kiriaty and Jaime Rodriguez. Complete book will be available at a later time. 5. Windows Phone 7 Developer Forum - where you can ask questions and problems you run into and the experts are there to help you. 6. For Silverlight visit silverlight.net and for XNA game development, the XNA Creators Club is the place to go, also make sure you follow Michael Klutcher's and Shawn Hargreaves' blog. 7. And finally the MIX'10 website. Most of the sessions will be available for download later (some are already available). Click on the Windows Phone tag to get all the session details and downloads.   If you are completely new to Silverlight and XNA (like me), and C# makes some sense to you then I suggest you go through the Developer Training Kit. It gives a good start and ramps you up pretty quickly.

• Handy SQL Server Functions Series (HSSFS) Part 2.0 - Prelude to Parsing Patterns Properly

  In Part 1 of the series I wrote about 2 lesser-known and somewhat undocumented functions. In this part, I'm going to cover some familiar string functions like Substring(), Parsename(), Patindex(), and Charindex() and delve into their strengths and weaknesses. I'm also splitting this part up into sub-parts to help focus on a particular technique and/or problem with the technique, hence the Part 2.0. Consider this a composite post, or com-post, if you will. (It may just turn out to be a pile of sh_t after all) I'll be using a contrived example, perhaps the most frustratingly useful, or usefully frustrating, function in SQL Server: @@VERSION. Contrived, because there are better ways to get the information (which I'll cover later); frustrating, because of the way Microsoft formatted the value; and useful because it does have 1 or 2 bits of information not found elsewhere. First let's take a look at the output of @@VERSION: Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 (RTM) - 10.50.1600.1 (Intel X86) Apr 2 2010 15:53:02 Copyright (c) Microsoft Corporation Developer Edition on Windows NT 5.1 <X86> (Build 2600: Service Pack 3) There are 4 lines, with lines 2-4 indented with a tab character.  In case your browser (or this blog software) doesn't show it correctly, I gave each line a different color.  While this PRINTs nicely, if you SELECT @@VERSION in grid mode it all runs together because it ignores carriage return/line feed (CR/LF) characters.  Not fatal, but annoying. Note that @@VERSION's output will vary depending on edition and version of SQL Server, and also the OS it's installed on.  Despite the differences, the output is laid out the same way and the relevant pieces are in the same order. • Building on someone else's DefaultButton Silverlight work...

  This week I was handed a "simple" requirement - have a search screen execute its search when the user pressed the Enter key instead of having to move hands from keyboard to mouse and click Search.  That is a reasonable request that has been met for years both in Windows and Web apps.  I did a quick scan for code to pilfer and found Patrick Cauldwell's Blog posting "A 'Default Button' In Silverlight".  This posting was a great start and I'm glad that the basic work had been done for me, but I ran into one issue - when using bound textboxes (I'm a die-hard MVVM enthusiast when it comes to Silverlight development), the search was being executed before the textbox I was in when the Enter key was pressed updated its bindings.  With a little bit of reflection work, I think I have found a good generic solution that builds upon Patrick's to make it more binding-friendly.  Also, I wanted to set the DefaultButton at a higher level than on each TextBox (or other control for that matter), so the use of mine is intended to be set somewhere such as the LayoutRoot or other high level control and will apply to all controls beneath it in the control tree.  I haven't tested this on controls that treat the Enter key special themselves in the mix. The real change from Patrick's solution here is that in the KeyUp event, I grab the source of the KeyUp event (in my case the textbox containing search criteria) and loop through the static fields on the element's type looking for DependencyProperty instances.  When I find a DependencyProperty, I grab the value and query for bindings.  Each time I find a binding, UpdateSource is called to make sure anything bound to any property of the field has the opportunity to update before the action represented by the DefaultButton is executed. • Problems compiling peazip on OSX

  I'm having some problems with compiling Peazip on OSX (10.6). I emailed the Peazip developer and he said he probably couldn't help me too much as the error seems to be OSX specific and he doesn't have access to an OSX machine any more. The compiler I'm using is Lazarus as the source is in Pascal. The actual compile process seems to go ok, but when I run the peazip.app program launcher, I get the following error: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v215/thegooddale/Screen-shot-2010-05-22-at-71907-PM.png Here is the app launcher that the compile made: http://forboden.com/coding/peazip.app.zip - you can use an unzip program to look at the files inside (i.e. unzip it twice). • Codesign returns exit code of 11 for xcode iphone project -- can't find documentation on exit code 1

  Hi Everyone, I'm new to iPhone development. I am trying to get Xcode to run an application on a phone. The app works fine in the simulator. Initially I hit the error: The executable was signed with invalid entitlements I followed the steps here: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1074546/the-executable-was-signed-with-invalid-entitlements But now I am getting an exit code of 11. I checked the documentation on codesign but I can't find any mention of an exit code 11 (http://gemma.apple.com/mac/library/documentation/Darwin/Reference/ManPages/man1/codesign.1.html) Below is the log I am getting. • Qmake does not specify a valid qt

  After installing Qt SDK for Open Source C++ development on Mac OS by following the respective steps Note for the binary package: If you have the binary package, simply double-click on the Qt.mpkg and follow the instructions to install Qt. . Yes, that is all I have done to install Qt on MacOsX. Everything was going fine, until I run a sample application, of which compile output resulted in: No valid Qt version set. Set one in Preferences Error while building project qtilk When executing build step 'QMake' Canceled build.   It had been revealed that there have been backdoor implanted in OpenBSD http://www.infoworld.com/d/developer-world/software-security-honesty-the-best-policy-285 OpenBSD is opensource, how is it that nobody in the community developper could see it in the source code ? So how can one trust all the other "opensource" Linux Of course OpenBSD is only a case, the point is not about OpenBSD, it is about opensource in general. my question is not about Openbsd per se it's about source code os inspection especially c/c++ since most are written in these languages. Also once the source is compiled how one can be sure that it really reflects the source code ? If a law requires that a backdoor being implanted and obliges to deny that kind of action under the guise of security, how can you be sure that the system has not been corrupted by some tools ? As said there is there is a "nondisclosure agreement" My guess is that 99.99% of developpers in the world are just incapable of understanding os source code and won't even bother to look at it. And above all nobody wonders about why the gov wants such massive backdoor, and that of course they will pressure medias to deny.

  hi, i have wrote a script to produce an array of data but now want to display in order of score. • Running Windows Phone Developers Tools CTP under VMWare Player - Yes you can! - But do you want to?

  This blog is the result of a quick investigation of running the Windows Phone Developer Tools CTP under VMWare Player.  In the release notes for Windows Phone Developer Tools CTP it mentions that it is not supported under VirtualPC or Hyper-V.  Some developers have policies where ‘no non-production code’ can be installed on their development workstation and so the only way they can use a CTP like this is in a virtual machine. The dilemma here is that the emulator for Windows Phone itself is a virtual machine and running a virtual machine within another virtual machine is normally frowned upon.  Even worse, previous Windows Mobile emulators detected they were in a virtual machine and refused to run.  Why VMWare? I selected VMWare as a possible solution as it is possible to run VMWare ESXi under VMWare Workstation by manually setting configuration options in the VMX configuration file so that it does not detect the presence of a virtual environment. I actually found that I could use VMWare Player (the free version, that can now create VM images) and that there was no need for any editing of the configuration file (I tried various switches, none of which made any difference to performance). So you can run the CTP under VMWare Player, that’s the good news. The bad news is that it is incredibly slow, bordering on unusable.  However, if it’s the only way you can use the CTP, at least this is an option. VMWare Player configuration I used the latest VMWare Player, 3.0, running under Windows x64 on my HP 6910p laptop with an Intel T7500 Dual Core CPU running at 2.2GHz, 4Gb of memory and using a separate drive for the virtual machines. I created a machine in VMWare Player with a single CPU, 1536 Mb memory and installed Windows 7 x64 from an ISO image.  I then performed a Windows Update, installed VMWare Tools, and finally the Windows Phone Developer Tools CTP After a few warnings about performance, I configured Windows 7 to run with Windows 7 Basic theme rather than use Aero (which is available under VMWare Player as it has a WDDM driver). Timings As a test I first launched Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 Express for Windows Phone, and created a default Windows Phone Application project.  I then clicked the run button, which starts the emulator and then loads the default application onto the emulator. For the second test I left the emulator running, stopped the default application, added a single button to change the page title and redeployed to the already running emulator by clicking the run button.   Test 1 (1st run) Test 2 (emulator already running)   VMWare Player 10 minutes  1 minute   Windows x64 native 1 minute  < 10 seconds   Conclusion You can run the Windows Phone Developer Tools CTP under VMWare Player, but it’s really, really slow and you would have to have very good reasons to try this approach. If you need to keep a development system free of non production code, and the two systems aren’t required to run simultaneously, then I’d consider a boot from VHD option.  Then you can completely isolate the Windows Phone Developer Tools CTP and development environment into a single VHD separate from your main development system.

• Creative, busy Devoxx week

  I got back from my first visit to the developer conference Devoxx in Antwerp. I can't describe the vibes of the conference, it was a developer amusement park, hackergartens, fact sessions, comic relief provided by Java Posse, James Bond and endless hallway discussions.All and all - I had a lot of fun, my main mission was to talk about Oracle's main focus for OpenJDK which besides development and bug fixing is making sure the infrastructure is working out for the full community. My focus was not to hang out at night club the Noxx, but that was came included in the package :)The London Java community leaders Ben Evans and Martijn Verburg are leading discussions in the community to lay out the necessary requirements for the infrastructure for build and test in the open. They called a first meeting at JavaOne gathering 25 people, including people from RedHat, IBM and Oracle. The second meeting at Devoxx included 14 participants and had representatives from Oracle and IBM. I hope we really can find a way to collaborate on this, making sure we deliver an efficient infrastructure for all engineers to contribute to OpenJDK with.My home in all of this was the BOF rooms and the sessions there meeting the JUG leaders, talking about OpenJDK infrastructure and celebrating the Duchess Duke Award together with the others. The restaurants in the area was slower than I've ever seen, so I missed out on Trisha Gee's brilliant replay of the workshop "The Problem with Women in IT - an Agile Approach" where she masterly leads the audience (a packed room, 50-50 gender distribution) to solve the problem of including more diversity in the developer community. A tough and sometimes sensitive topic where she manages to keep the discussion objective with a focus of improving the matter from a business perspective. Mattias Karlsson is organizing the Java developer conference Jfokus in Stockholm and was there talking to Andres Almires planning a Hackergarten with a possible inclusion of an OpenJDK bugathon. That would be really cool, especially as the Oracle Stockholm Java development office is just across the water from the Jfokus venue, some of the local JVM engineers will likely attend and assist, even though the bug smashing theme will likely be more starter level build warnings in Swing or langtools than fixing JVM bugs.I was really happy that I managed to catch a seat for the Java Posse live podcast "the Third Presidential Debate" a lot of nerd humor, a lot of beer, a lot of fun :) The new member Chet had a perfect dead pan delivery and now I just have to listen more to the podcasts! Can't get the most perfect joke out of my head, talking about beer "As my father always said: Better a bottle in front of me than a frontal lobotomy" - hilarious :)I attended the sessions delivered by my Stockholm office colleagues Marcus Lagergren (on dynamic languages on the jvm, JavaScript in particular) and Joel Borggrén-Franck (Annotations) and was happy to see the packed room and all the questions raised at the end.There's loads of stuff to write about the event, but just have to pace myself for now. It was a fantastic event, captain Stephan Janssen with crew should be really proud to provide this forum to the developer community!

• Why do I always think I know much less than others? [closed]

  I have been in programming since primary 6. Since the time DOS comes, I have been doing programming in quickbasic 4.5, then to VB 6, then to C#. In between I also do programming in C++. But every time I open Stack Overflow and trying to help others answering their problems, it seems that I know nothing. I feel that I am so stupid even I have been in programming for so long. I would shock reading all the questions and unable to find any clue. Is technology moving too fast that left out me? I feel that technology changes too fast and I can't keep up, when I know ASP.NET web form, MVC is out, when I know MVC, android/iphone/HTML5 app is popular. It seems that I am chasing something and never reach 'it'. I don't know whether this is correct place for me to talk about this. I just wish to listen to opinion like you, how do you think technology should grow instead of recreating language, adding bug here and there to let programmer figure it out, while big company share the solution among themselves. This is exactly how I feel. The simple example is how do you think why doesn't Dictionary<> in .NET provide iterating the object using index? Why must we use Key or GetEnumerator(). Developer has to google and read wasted hour of hour of time to find pieces of hack code to use reflection to achieve reading from index. Where developer will keep it as collection and valuable code. HOwever when times come, everything changes again, developer has to find answer for new silly problems again! Yes, I really hate it! I hate how many big companies are playing with the developer by cutting a big picture into small puzzle and messing it up and asking developer to place it together themselves. As if they are creating problems for us to solve it, so we are unable to grow upfront, we are being manipulated by those silly problems they have created. Another sample would how difficult to collect Cookies from CookieContainer without passing the URL, yes without the URL and I WANT to get all cookie in the cookiecontainer without knowing the URL, I want to iterate all. Why does micros0ft have to limit me from doing that?

• Blackberry ESS standalone mode && Outlook 2007

  Hi, I launch Blackberry ESS in standalone mode. However I don't have Outlook Express on my computer. Instead I have Outlook 2007 on my computer. I set up an email account in Outlook 2007 which uses 'localhost' as its pop3/smtp server. The port numbers I used are the same as those in http://www.blackberryforums.com/developer-forum/5590-sending-receiving-email-device-simulator.html. However I got the following exception. 'UnknownHostException:pop3.server'. I am wondering if Outlook 2007 works with ESS.

• Xceed DataGrid SelectedItem issue

  In my project I have an Xceed data grid which is bound to a data source with many records and record details. I am attempting to create a context menu option that will allow the user to search for a specific detail in a specific column. While I have successfully completed the functionality there is a UI part that is giving me some trouble, in that when I select the row in C#, if that row is not in view the row is never focused on. Thus the user has to scroll up and down looking for the row with expanded details. I am able to set the SelectedRow and expand the details like so: this.grid.AutoFilterValues[userColumn].Clear(); this.grid.AutoFilterValues[userColumn].Add(userValue); if (this.creditLinesDataGridControl.Items.Count > 0) { this.grid.SelectedItem = this.grid.Items[0]; this.grid.ExpandDetails(this.grid.Items[0]); } else { MessageBox.Show("Value not found in column: " + userColumn); } this.grid.AutoFilterValues[userColumn].Clear(); where userColumn and userValue are set previously in the method. • Fast sign in C++ float...are there any platform dependencies in this code?

  Searching online, I have found the following routine for calculating the sign of a float in IEEE format. I need my code to work on machines with different byte orders, but I am not sure how much of this the IEEE standard specifies, as I couldn't find the most recent version, published this year. • Maven Mojo & SCM Plugin: Check for a valid working directory

  Hi there. I'm using maven-scm-plugin from within a Mojo and am trying to figure out how to determine if a directory D is a valid working directory of an SCM URL U (i.e. a checkout of U to D already happened). The context is that I want to do a checkout of U if D is a working set or do an update if it isn't. The plan is to check out U to D if D does not exist, update D if D is a valid working directory of U, display an error if D exists and is not a valid working directory of U. What I tried is to call ScmManager.status(), ScmManager.list() and ScmManager.changelog() and try to guess something from their results. But that didn't work. The results from status and changelog always return something positive (isSuccess() = true, getChangedFiles() = valid List, no exceptions to catch), whereas list throws an exception in any case. ScmRepository and ScmFileSet don't seem to provide suitable methods as well. An option would be to always do an update if D exists but then I cannot tell if it is a working directory of U or any SCM working directory at all. The ideal solution would be independent of the actual SCM system and a specific ScmVersion. Thanks for your help! Patrick

• Implementing a 1 to many relationship with SQLite

  I have the following schema implemented successfully in my application. The application connects desk unit channels to IO unit channels. The DeskUnits and IOUnits tables are basically just a list of desk/IO units and the number of channels on each. For example a desk could be 4 or 12 channel. CREATE TABLE DeskUnits (Name TEXT, NumChannels NUMERIC); CREATE TABLE IOUnits (Name TEXT, NumChannels NUMERIC); CREATE TABLE RoutingTable (DeskUnitName TEXT, DeskUnitChannel NUMERIC, IOUnitName TEXT, IOUnitChannel NUMERIC); The RoutingTable 'table' then connects each DeskUnit channel to an IOUnit channel. For example the DeskUnit called "Desk1" channel 1 may route to IOunit name "IOUnit1" channel 2, etc. So far I hope this is pretty straightforward and understandable. The problem is, however, this is a strictly 1 to 1 relationship. Any DeskUnit channel can route to only 1 IOUnit channel. Now, I need to implement a 1 to many relationship. Where any DeskUnit channel can connect to multiple IOUnit channels. I realise I may have to rearrange the tables completely, but I am not sure the best way to go about this. I am fairly new to SQLite and databases in general so any help would be appreciated. Thanks Patrick

  In my application, I have a 'logging' window, which shows all the logging, warnings, errors of the application. Last year my application was still single-threaded so this worked [quite] good. Now I am introducing multithreading. I quickly noticed that it's not a good idea to update the logging window from different threads. Reading some articles on keeping the UI in the main thread, I made a communication buffer, in which the other threads are adding their logging messages, and from which the main thread takes the messages and shows them in the logging window (this is done in the message loop). Now, in a part of my application, the memory usage increases dramatically, because the separate threads are generating lots of logging messages, and the main thread cannot empty the communication buffer quickly enough. After the while the memory decreases again (if the other threads have finished their work and the main thread gradually empties the communication buffer). I solved this problem by having a maximum size on the communication buffer, but then I run into a problem in the following situation: the main thread has to perform a complex action the main thread takes some parts of the action and let's separate threads execute this while the seperate threads are executing their logic, the main thread processes the results from the other threads and continues with its work if the other threads are finished Problem is that in this situation, if the other threads perform logging, there is no UI-message loop, and so the communication buffer is filled, but not emptied. I see two solutions in solving this problem: require the main thread to do regular polling of the communication buffer only performing user interface logic in the main thread (no other logic) I think the second solution seems the best, but this may not that easy to introduce in a big application (in my case it performs mathematical simulations). Are there any other solutions or tips? Or is one of the two proposed the best, easiest, most-pragmatic solution? Thanks, Patrick

  Hello, Horrible title I know, horrible question too. I'm working with a bit of software where a dll returns a ptr to an internal class. Other dlls (calling dlls) then use this pointer to call methods of that class directly: //dll 1 internalclass m_class; internalclass* getInternalObject() { return &m_class; } //dll 2 internalclass* classptr = getInternalObject(); classptr->method(); This smells pretty bad to me but it's what I've got... I want to add a new method to internalclass as one of the calling dlls needs additional functionality. I'm certain that all dlls that access this class will need to be rebuilt after the new method is included but I can't work out the logic of why. My thinking is it's something to do with the already compiled calling dll having the physical address of each function within internalclass in the other dll but I don't really understand it; is anyone here able to provide a concise explanation of how the dlls (new internal class dll, rebuilt calling dll and calling dll built with previous version of the internal class dll) would fit together?
