• Optimized algorithm for line-sphere intersection in GLSL

  Well, hello then! I need to find intersection between line and sphere in GLSL. • My new favourite traceflag

  As we are all aware, there are a number of traceflags.  Some documented, some semi-documented and some completely undocumented.  Here is one that is undocumented that Paul White(b|t) mentioned almost as an aside in one of his excellent blog posts. Much has been written about residual predicates and how a predicate can be pushed into a seek/scan operation.  This is a good thing to happen,  it does save a lot of processing from having to be done.  For the uninitiated though: If we have a simple SELECT statement such as : the process that SQL Server goes through to resolve this is : The index IX_Person_LastName_FirstName_MiddleName is navigated to find the first “Smith” For each “Smith” the middle name is checked for being a null. Two operations!, and the execution plan doesnt fully represent all the work that is being undertaken. As you can see there is only a single seek operation, the work undertaken to resolve the condition “MiddleName is not null” has been pushed into it.  This can be seen in the properties. “Seek predicate” is how the index has been navigated, and “Predicate” is the condition run over every row,  a scan inside a seek!. So the question is:  How many rows have been resolved by the seek and how many by the scan ?  How many rows did the filter remove ? Wouldn’t it be nice if this operation could be split ?  That exactly what traceflag 9130 does. Executing the query: That changes the plan rather dramatically, and should be changing how we think about the index seek itself.  The Filter operator has been added and, unsurprisingly, the condition in this is “MiddleName is not null” So it is now evident that the seek operation found 103 Smiths and 60 of those Smiths had a non-null MiddleName. This traceflag has no place on a production system,  dont even think about it

• Laptop runs HOT after 12.10 upgrade!

  I was running 12.04 for 6 months, my laptop ran almost silently and cool enough to hold on my lap. I updated to 12.10 and now my computer gets too hot to hold on my lap and the fan is constantly running on full blast. This is the output of sensors: acpitz-virtual-0 Adapter: Virtual device temp1: +84.0°C (crit = +99.0°C) coretemp-isa-0000 Adapter: ISA adapter Physical id 0: +84.0°C (high = +86.0°C, crit = +100.0°C) Core 0: +74.0°C (high = +86.0°C, crit = +100.0°C) Core 1: +72.0°C (high = +86.0°C, crit = +100.0°C) Core 2: +75.0°C (high = +86.0°C, crit = +100.0°C) Core 3: +84.0°C (high = +86.0°C, crit = +100.0°C) radeon-pci-0100 Adapter: PCI adapter temp1: +76.0°C I have an HP Pavilion dv6, i7, amd radeon graphics. Please let me know if you need additional information. What could be different between the two Ubuntu additions that caused such a drastic change? Edit 1: Per @Paul's suggestion, I ran htop to try to narrow down the problem. Here is the result! This is about 10 minutes after boot-up, htop, yakuake, and a chrome page with 1 tab opened to this question are all that I have manually opened. The most taxing program to the CPU is htop itself. I think that the problem must lie elsewhere; my temps are already up to ~65C for the CPU and ~69C for the GPU, with nearly 0% CPU usage.

• Batch file to ZIP only files in directory or sub directory

  I wanted to know if possible how to create a command line to do the following - if a directory exist ZIP only the contents into a ZIP file. If a directory has sub-directories ZIP only the contents into another ZIP file. Example: C:\Directory\sample.txt ZIP only sample.txt C:\Directory\Directory1\sample1.txt ZIP only sample1.txt C:\Directory\Directory1\Directory2\sample2.txt ZIP only sample2.txt So it would have created 3 zip files in C:\Directory and sub-directories. I will not know the name of the sub-directories so can I also assign some sort of variable that says if there are directories or sub-directories in C:\Directory then start above ZIP(s)? • Completely unable to install python2.7-dev

  Am totally stuck! Am unable completely to install python2.7-dev on my Ubuntu13.04. I have tried all the tricks mentioned on this site (askubuntu.com) and many other sites on the web but still nothing! Am running Ubuntu 13.04 64bit on a virtualbox, but every time I run sudo apt-get install python2.7-dev, I get the following error; python2.7-dev : Depends: python2.7 (= 2.7.3-0ubuntu3.5) but 2.7.4-2ubuntu3 is to be installed Depends: libpython2.7 (= 2.7.3-0ubuntu3.5) but 2.7.4-2ubuntu3 is to be installed Depends: libexpat1-dev but it is not going to be installed Depends: libssl-dev but it is not going to be installed E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages. I've tried to do apt-get update, but still nothing! I've even tried installing Python2.7 from sources, but still nothing doing! Is there a single package with all the dependencies I can download, that can just install everything (Python2.7-dev) or is there another trick I can use to get the Python-dev headers installed on my machine. Hint: I've noticed when I run sudo apt-get update , somewhere along the updates I've seen some errors; ... • configure vpn so that it is not the preferred route

  Hi all, I recently re-installed XP on my PC. I had a vpn set up on the old system and remember being advised to change one setting so that it wasn't the preferred route for all network traffic. This was ideal as only connections to the target network would be made through the vpn and all normal traffic would go through the regular path unmolested. i remember thinking "why isn't this the default setting!?". now i've formatted my drive and lost the config for that vpn (besides host, username, passwd). does anyone know of the setting i'm referring to? thanks, paul.

• Nginx Tornado Combination Causing 502 Bad Gateway Errors

  We are facing a problem with inconsistent 502 errors and tracking down the reasons has been a very frustrating exercise. We can reproduce the problem by sending several simultaneous requests quickly. The problem is that several is only in the range of 10 to 20 within a 5 seconds (not a typo). So clearly this type of load should be handled easily. We really like the Nginx + Tornado approach but are considering going to a more traditional (e.g. threading) approach because this problem has been very difficult to solve. I was wondering if you a) know how to fix this issue and b) how we can tracked down the culprit(s). The log files simply identify there being a connection refused. We have the same problem as this post: How do I debug a HTTP 502 error? But there is no answer provided on how to solve the problem so I'm hoping you can help because this may be a common issue with this type of setup. Thanks in advance, Paul

• How to use pipes for nonblocking IPC (UART emulation)

  I would like to write some test/emulation code that emulates a serial port connection. The real code looks like this: DUT <- UART - testtool.exe My plan is to use create a test application (CodeUnderTest.out) on linux that forks to launch testool.out with two (read & write) named pipes as arguments. But I cannot figure out how to make all the pipe IO non-blocking! The setup would look like this:. CodeUnderTest.out <- named pipes - testTool.out (lauched from CodeUnderTest.out) I have tried opening the pipes as following: open(wpipe,O_WRONLY|O_NONBLOCK); open(rpipe,O_RDONLY|O_NONBLOCK); But the write blocks until the reader opens the wpipe. Next I tried the following: open(wpipe,O_RDWR|O_NONBLOCK); open(rpipe,O_RDONLY|O_NONBLOCK); But then the reader of the first message never gets any data (doesn't block though) I also tried adding open and close calls around each message, but that didn't work either... • Sync Framework Peer Data Sharing Unable to Catch Conflicts, Source Provider Alwasy wins!

  Hi, I am using SQL Server 2008 and the WebSharingAppDemo-SqlProviderEndToEnd sample and this is almost perfect for my needs however I am unable to detect conflicts. By default ConflictResolutionPolicy is set to ApplicationDefined. I have tried setting the ResolutionPolicy to SourceWins, DestinationWins or ApplicationDefined and I always get the same results? The Destination Provider Proxy (Peer) always wins? Can someone please provide a sample of how I can detect a conflict and act upon it or point me in the right direction where I can start to look. I am not sure what to do and where I can create events for detecting collisions. Been staring at this too long now and going around in circles! Thanks in advanced. Paul

  A few days ago Stacy Draper and I were chatting about what it means to be a SharePoint Developer. That actually turns about to be a conversation with lots of shades of grey. Stacy thought it would make a good blog post… well, I can’t promise this to be a GOOD blog post… So, anyway, I decided to let off a little bomb this morning by posting the following tweet on Twitter: @mrackley: Can someone be considered a SharePoint Developer if all they know how to do is work in SPD? Now, I knew this is a debate that has been going on since the first SharePoint Designer User put SharePoint Developer on their resume. There are probably several blogs out there on the subject, but with the wildfire that is jQuery and a few other new features out there I believe it is an important subject to tackle again. I got a lot of great feedback as well on Twitter. The entire twitter conversation is at the end of this blog posting. Thanks everyone for their opinions. Who cares? Why does it matter? Can’t we all just get along? Yes it matters… everything must be labeled and put in it’s proper place. Pigeon holing is the only way to go!  Just kidding.. I’m not near that anal, but yes! It is important to be able to properly identify the skill set of those people on your team and correctly identify the role you are wanting to hire. Saying you are a “SharePoint Developer” is just too vague and just barely begins to answer the question. Also, knowing who’s on your team and what they can do will ensure you give your clients the best people for the job. A Developer writes code right? So, a Developer uses Visual Studio! Whoa, hold on there Sparky. Even if I concede that to be a developer you have to write code then you still can’t say a SharePoint Developer has to use Visual Studio.  So, you can spell C#, how well can you write XSLT? How’s your jQuery? Sorry bud, that’s code whether you like it or not. There are many ways to write code in SharePoint that have nothing to do with cracking open Visual Studio. So, what are the different ways to develop in SharePoint then? How many different ways can you “develop” in SharePoint?? A lot… Out of the box features In SharePoint you can create a site, create a custom list on that site, do basic calculations in a calculated column, set up alerts, and add all sorts of web parts to a page. Let’s face it.. that IS development! javaScript/jQuery Perhaps you’ve heard by now about this thing called jQuery? It’s all over the place and the answer to a lot of people’s prayers. However be careful, with great power comes great responsibility. Remember, javaScript is executed on the client side and if you abuse it your performance could be affected. Also, Marc Anderson (@sympmarc) wrote a pretty awesome javaScript library called SPServices.  This allows you to access SharePoint’s Web Services using jQuery. How freakin cool is that? With these tools at your disposal the number of things you CAN’T do without Visual Studio grows smaller and smaller. This is definitely development no matter what anyone else says and there is no Visual Studio involved. SharePoint Designer Ahhh.. The cause of and the answer to all of your SharePoint development problems. With SharePoint Designer you can use DataView Web Parts, develop (there’s that word again) your branding, and even connect to external datasources.  There’s a lot you can do in SharePoint Designer. It’s got it’s shortcomings, but it is an invaluable tool in the SharePoint developers toolbox. InfoPath So, can InfoPath development really be considered SharePoint development? I would say yes. You can connect to SharePoint lists, populate fields in a SharePoint list, and even write code in InfoPath. Sounds like SharePoint development to me. Visual Studio – Web Services/WCF So, get this. You can write code for SharePoint and not have a clue what the 12 hive is, what “site actions” means, or know how to do ANYTHING in SharePoint? Poppycock! You say? SharePoint Web Services I say… With SharePoint Web Services you can totally interact with SharePoint without knowing anything about SharePoint. I don’t recommend it of course, but it’s possible. What can you write using SharePoint Web Services? How about a little application called SharePoint Designer? Visual Studio – Object Model And here we are finally:  the SharePoint Object Model.  When you hear “SharePoint Developer” most people think of someone opening Visual Studio and creating a custom web part, workflow, event receiver, etc.. etc.. but I hope that by now I have made the point that this is NOT the only form of SharePoint Development! Again… Who cares? Just crack open Visual Studio for everything! Problem solved! Let’s ponder for a moment, shall we? The business comes to you with a requirement that involves some pretty fancy business calculations, and a complicated view that they do NOT want to look like SharePoint. “No Problem” you proclaim you mighty SharePoint Developer. You go back to your cube, chuckle at the latest Dilbert comic, and crack open Visual Studio. Then you build your custom web part… fight with all the deployment, migration, and UAT that you must go through and proclaim victory two weeks later!!!! Well done my good sir/ma’am! Oh wait… it turns out Sally who is not a “developer” did the exact same thing with a Dataview web part and some jQuery and it’s been in production for two weeks? #CockinessFail I know there are many ASP.NET developers out there that can create a custom control and wrap it to be a SharePoint Web Part.  That does NOT mean they are SharePoint Developers though as far as I’m concerned and I personally would much rather have someone on my team that can manipulate the heck (yes, I said ‘heck’) out of SharePoint using Dataview Web Parts, jQuery, and a roll of duct tape. Just because you know how to write code in Visual Studio does not mean you are a SharePoint Developer. What’s the conclusion here? How do we define ‘it’ and what ‘it’ is called? Fortunately, this is MY blog. I don’t have to give answers, I can stir the pot, laugh and leave you to ponder what it means! There is obviously no right or wrong answer here (unless you disagree with me,then you are flat out wrong). Anyway, there are many opinions.  Here’s mine.  If you put SharePoint Developer on your resume make sure to clearly specify HOW you develop in SharePoint and what tools you use. If we must label these gurus of jQuery and SPD, how about “SharePoint Client Developer” or “SharePoint Front End Developer”? Just throwing out an idea. Whatever we call them, to say they are not developers is short-sighted, arrogant, and unfair. • Algorithm for nice graph labels for time/date axis?

  Hello, I'm looking for a "nice numbers" algorithm for determining the labels on a date/time value axis. I'm familar with Paul Heckbert's Nice Numbers algorithm (http://tinyurl.com/5gmk2c). I have a plot that displays time/date on the X axis and the user can zoom in and look at a smaller time frame. I'm looking for an algorithm that picks nice dates to display on the ticks. For example: Looking at a day or so: 1/1 12:00, 1/1 4:00, 1/1 8:00... Looking at a week: 1/1, 1/2, 1/3... Looking at a month: 1/09, 2/09, 3/09... The nice label ticks don't need to correspond to the first visible point, but close to it. Is anybody familar with such an algorithm? Thanks

• Testing C++ program with Testing classes over normally used classes

  Hi Guys, This will probably be a bot of a waffly question but ill try my best. I have a simple c++ program that i need to build testing for. I have 2 Classes i use besides the one i actually am using, these are called WebServer and BusinessLogicLayer. To test my own code i have made my own versions of these classes that feed dummy data to my class to test it functionality. I need to know a way of somehow, via a makefile for instance, how to tell the source code to use the test classes over the normally used classes. The test classes are in a different "tester" c++ file, and the tester c++ file also has its own header file. Regards Paul P.S. • Sorting an array in PHP based on different values

  I have an array whose elements are name, reversed_name, first_initial and second_initial. A typical row is "Aaron Smith", "Smith, Aaron", "a", "s". Each row in the array has a first_initial or second_initial value of "a". I need to display the rows alphabetically but based on the "a" part, so that either the name or reversed_name will be displayed. An example output would be: Aaron Smith Abbot, Paul Adrian Jones Anita Thompson Atherton, Susan I really have no idea how to sort the array this way so any help will be much appreciated!

• Do I really need cmake for build automation?

  I'm currently investigating cmake to allow automatic building on the Win32 platform. For all runtimes and libraries I'd like to build, Visual Studio (2008/2010) projects do allready exist. I've come across cmake, but I'm unsure if I really need it. As the documentation says, cmake generates VS projects and they then can be built e.g. using MSBuild. As the projects itself allready do exist (and build nicely via the IDE or MSBuild on the cmd line), what do I need and use cmake for? Just for directory/project folder traversal? Build failure reporting? Regards, Paul

• 'schema' design for a social network

  I'm working on a proof of concept app for a twitter style social network with about 500k users. I'm unsure of how best to design the 'schema' should I embed a user's subscriptions or have a separate 'subscriptions' collection and use db references? If I embed, I still have to perform a query to get all of a user's followers. e.g. Given the following user: { "username" : "alan", "photo": "123.jpg", "subscriptions" : [ {"username" : "john", "status" : "accepted"}, {"username" : "paul", "status" : "pending"} ] } to find all of alan's subscribers, I'd have to run something like this: db.users.find({'subscriptions.username' : 'alan'}); from a performance point of view, is that any worse or better than having a separate subscriptions collection? also, when displaying a list of subscriptions/subscribers, I am currently having problems with n+1 because the subscription document tells me the username of the target user but not other attributes I may need such as the profile photo. Are there any recommended practices for such situations? thanks Alan

  The following code returns 14 as you'd expect: Block[{expr}, expr = 2 z; f[z_] = expr; f[7]] But if you change that Block to a Module then it returns 2*z. It seems to not matter what other variables besides expr you localize. I thought I understood Module, Block, and With in Mathematica but I can't explain the difference in behavior between Module and Block in this example. I am specifically talking about the use of _Src and _List in the parameters. Are these simply for documentation as I cannot see why they are used? Thanks Paul

  Hi, I am playing about with Erlang and I am trying to write a simple arithmetic parser. I want to try and parse the following expression: ((12+3)-4) I want to parse the expression into a stack of AST nodes. When parsing this expression, I would first of all create a binary expression for the (12+3) expression which would look something like this in C#: var binaryStructure = new BinaryStructure(); binaryStructure.Left = IntegerLiteralExpression(12); binaryStructure.Right = IntegerLiteralExpression(4); binaryStructure.Operator = binaryExpression.Operator != BinaryOperatorType.Addition; I am quite new to Erlang and I am wondering how I would go about creating a structure like this in Erlang that I can place on a List that I would use as the stack of expressions. Can anyone suggest how to create such a tree like structure? Would a function be a good fit? Thanks Paul

• How To Aggregate API Data?

  Hi, I have a system that connects to 2 popular APIs. I need to aggregate the data from each into a unified result that can then be paginated. The scope of the project means that the system could end up supporting 10's of APIs. Each API imposes a max limit of 50 results per request. What is the best way of aggregating this data so that it is reliable i.e ordered, no duplicates etc I am using CakePHP framework on a LAMP environment, however, I think this question relates to all programming languages. My approach so far is to query the search API of each provider and then populate a MySQL table. From this the results are ordered, paginated etc. However, my concern is performance: API communication, parsing, inserting and then reading all in one execution. Am I missing something, does anyone have any other ideas? I'm sure this is a common problem with many alternative solutions. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Paul
