• "Tail" a logstash server query

- by phatmanace
Assuming I have a logstash server chocked full of logs being loaded regularly, is there a reasonably elegant way that I can tail the results of a continuously executing query on the logstash server and show this in a terminal window e.g some-special-logstash-command.sh | egrep -v "(searchword1|searchword2)" the idea being that the command pipes stuff out of logstash and to my grep query that filters and shows me the filtered output for. .. of course if there is a logstash command that can do the grep piece for me as well, then that works too :) motivation for doing this, is that assuming all of my events from my estate is being loaded into logstash, then would be nice to have a terminal window with a continuous tail of interesting events as they occur scrolling past the screen. -Ace

• Faceted search with Solr on Windows

- by Dr.NETjes
With over 10 million hits a day, funda.nl is probably the largest ASP.NET website which uses Solr on a Windows platform. While all our data (i.e. real estate properties) is stored in SQL Server, we're using Solr 1.4.1 to return the faceted search results as fast as we can.And yes, Solr is very fast. We did do some heavy stress testing on our Solr service, which allowed us to do over 1,000 req/sec on a single 64-bits Solr instance; and that's including converting search-url's to Solr http-queries and deserializing Solr's result-XML back to .NET objects! Let me tell you about faceted search and how to integrate Solr in a .NET/Windows environment. I'll bet it's easier than you think :-) What is faceted search? Faceted search is the clustering of search results into categories, allowing users to drill into search results. By showing the number of hits for each facet category, users can easily see how many results match that category. If you're still a bit confused, this example from CNET explains it all: The SQL solution for faceted search Our ("pre-Solr") solution for faceted search was done by adding a lot of redundant columns to our SQL tables and doing a COUNT(...) for each of those columns: So if a user was searching for real estate properties in the city 'Amsterdam', our facet-query would be something like: SELECT COUNT(hasGarden), COUNT(has2Bathrooms), COUNT(has3Bathrooms), COUNT(etc...) FROM Houses WHERE city = 'Amsterdam' While this solution worked fine for a couple of years, it wasn't very easy for developers to add new facets. And also, performing COUNT's on all matched rows only performs well if you have a limited amount of rows in a table (i.e. less than a million). Enter Solr "Solr is an open source enterprise search server based on the Lucene Java search library, with XML/HTTP and JSON APIs, hit highlighting, faceted search, caching, replication, and a web administration interface." (quoted from Wikipedia's page on Solr) Solr isn't a database, it's more like a big index. Every time you upload data to Solr, it will analyze the data and create an inverted index from it (like the index-pages of a book). This way Solr can lookup data very quickly. To explain the inner workings of Solr is beyond the scope of this post, but if you want to learn more, please visit the Solr Wiki pages. Getting faceted search results from Solr is very easy; first let me show you how to send a http-query to Solr: http://localhost:8983/solr/select?q=city:Amsterdam This will return an XML document containing the search results (in this example only three houses in the city of Amsterdam): <response> <result name="response" numFound="3" start="0"> <doc> <long name="id">3203</long> <str name="city">Amsterdam</str> <str name="steet">Keizersgracht</str> <int name="numberOfBathrooms">2</int> </doc> <doc> <long name="id">3205</long> <str name="city">Amsterdam</str> <str name="steet">Vondelstraat</str> <int name="numberOfBathrooms">3</int> </doc> <doc> <long name="id">4293</long> <str name="city">Amsterdam</str> <str name="steet">Wibautstraat</str> <int name="numberOfBathrooms">2</int> </doc> </result> </response> By adding a facet-querypart for the field "numberOfBathrooms", Solr will return the facets for this particular field. We will see that there's one house in Amsterdam with three bathrooms and two houses with two bathrooms. http://localhost:8983/solr/select?q=city:Amsterdam&facet=true&facet.field=numberOfBathrooms The complete XML response from Solr now looks like: <response> <result name="response" numFound="3" start="0"> <doc> <long name="id">3203</long> <str name="city">Amsterdam</str> <str name="steet">Keizersgracht</str> <int name="numberOfBathrooms">2</int> </doc> <doc> <long name="id">3205</long> <str name="city">Amsterdam</str> <str name="steet">Vondelstraat</str> <int name="numberOfBathrooms">3</int> </doc> <doc> <long name="id">4293</long> <str name="city">Amsterdam</str> <str name="steet">Wibautstraat</str> <int name="numberOfBathrooms">2</int> </doc> </result> <lst name="facet_fields"> <lst name="numberOfBathrooms"> <int name="2">2</int> <int name="3">1</int> </lst> </lst> </response> Trying Solr for yourself To run Solr on your local machine and experiment with it, you should read the Solr tutorial. This tutorial really only takes 1 hour, in which you install Solr, upload sample data and get some query results. And yes, it works on Windows without a problem. Note that in the Solr tutorial, you're using Jetty as a Java Servlet Container (that's why you must start it using "java -jar start.jar"). In our environment we prefer to use Apache Tomcat to host Solr, which installs like a Windows service and works more like .NET developers expect. See the SolrTomcat page. Some best practices for running Solr on Windows: Use the 64-bits version of Tomcat. In our tests, this doubled the req/sec we were able to handle!Use a .NET XmlReader to convert Solr's XML output-stream to .NET objects. Don't use XPath; it won't scale well.Use filter queries ("fq" parameter) instead of the normal "q" parameter where possible. Filter queries are cached by Solr and will speed up Solr's response time (see FilterQueryGuidance)In my next post I’ll talk about how to keep Solr's indexed data in sync with the data in your SQL tables. Timestamps / rowversions will help you out here!

• Taskbar Meters Turn Your Taskbar into a System Resource Monitor

- by Jason Fitzpatrick
If you’re looking for some simple hardware monitoring tools that don’t clutter up your screen real estate but are right in front of you when you need them, Taskbar Meters sit unobtrusively right on the Windows taskbar. Open source, lightweight, and portable Taskbar Meters is actually a set of three applications. There is one for monitoring memory use, one for CPU use, and one for disk activity. Using the application is as simple as running the specific app for the monitoring you want (we have all three running in the screenshot here) and adjusting the sliders to set the update frequency and the percent utilization at which the meters turn from green, to yellow, to red. If you’re testing software loads and benchmarking Taskbar Meters doesn’t offer the kind of fine-tooth-comb view into system performance that you’ll need but for casual “What’s going on with my machine?” monitoring, it’s unobtrusive and effective. • Is there any way to stop a window's title bar merging with the panel when maximised?

- by Richard Turner
I'm working on a desktop machine with plenty of screen real-estate, so I don't need my windows' title bars to merge with the global menu bar when the windows are maximised. Moreover, I'm working on a dual-screen set-up, so the fact that a window is maximised doesn't mean that it's the only window visible. Before Unity I'd switch to a maximised window by clicking on its title bar, or close the window, even though it isn't focused, by clicking on its close button; I can no longer do this because the title bar is missing and the global menu bar is empty on that screen. This isn't a huge problem - I can click on some of the window's chrome to focus it - but it's unintuitive and it's forcing me to relearn my mousing behaviour. I'd like to turn-off the merging of title and global menu bars, but how? EDIT: I simply want the title bar of the window NOT to merge with the top panel whenever I maximize a Window. The global menu should stay in the top panel as far as I am concerned. Current it maximizes like this I want it to maximize like this (In that screeny the unmaximized Window has been resized to take rest of the space)

• Getting Started with Puppet on Oracle Solaris 11

- by Glynn Foster
One of the exciting enhancements with Oracle Solaris 11.2 has been the introduction of Puppet. While upstream Puppet did have some rudimentary support for Oracle Solaris 11, Drew Fisher and Ginnie Wray worked tirelessly to add enhance the Oracle Solaris Puppet offering. We've talked to customers over the past few years and asked them what their problems were and what technologies they were using, particularly for configuration management. Puppet came up time and time again, and it made a huge amount of sense bringing it as a 1st class citizen in the Oracle Solaris platform. So what is Puppet, and why is it useful? To quote from PuppetLabs, the guys who are responsible for creating Puppet: Puppet is a declarative, model-based approach to IT automation, helping you manage infrastructure throughout its lifecycle, from provisioning and configuration to orchestration and reporting. Using Puppet, you can easily automate repetitive tasks, quickly deploy critical applications, and proactively manage change, scaling from 10s of servers to 1000s, on-premise or in the cloud. What's more, with Puppet support for Oracle Solaris, administrators can now manage a completely heterogeneous data center from a single or series of Puppet masters. Better still, it's an excellent tool when combined with our new compliance framework to ensure you're meeting your compliance regulations. We're not stopping there of course, and we'll enhance our offerings over time, and work with PuppetLabs to get some of this support upstream (or into the Puppet Forge). So if you've heard some of the buzz around Puppet and never quite got started, and have some Oracle Solaris real estate that you'd love to manage, check out the Getting Started with Puppet on Oracle Solaris 11 guide.

• How do you use blank lines in your code ?

- by Matthieu M.
There has been a few remarks about white space already in discussion about curly braces placements. I myself tend to sprinkle my code with blank lines in an attempt to segregate things that go together in "logical" groups and hopefully make it easier for the next person to come by to read the code I just produced. In fact, I would say I structure my code like I write: I make paragraphs, no longer than a few lines (definitely shorter than 10), and try to make each paragraph self-contained. For example: in a class, I will group methods that go together, while separating them by a blank line from the next group. if I need to write a comment I'll usually put a blank line before the comment in a method, I make one paragraph per step of the process All in all, I rarely have more than 4/5 lines clustered together, meaning a very sparse code. I don't consider all this white space a waste because I actually use it to structure the code (as I use the indentation in fact), and therefore I feel it worth the screen estate it takes. For example: for (int i = 0; i < 10; ++i) { if (i % 3 == 0) continue; array[i] += 2; } I consider than the two statements have clear distinct purposes and thus deserve to be separated to make it obvious. So, how do you actually use (or not) blank lines in code ?

• Any tips for designing the invoicing/payment system of a SaaS?

- by Alexandru Trandafir Catalin
The SaaS is for real estate companies, and they can pay a monthly fee that will offer them 1000 publications but they can also consume additional publications or other services that will appear on their bill as extras. On registration the user can choose one of the 5 available plans that the only difference will be the quantity of publications their plan allows them to make. But they can pass that limit if they wish, and additional payment will be required on the next bill. A publication means: Publishing a property during one day, for 1 whole month would be: 30 publications. And 5 properties during one day would be 5 publications. So basically the user can: Make publications (already paid in the monthly fee, extra payment only if it passes the limit) Highlight that publication (extra payment) Publish on other websites or printed catalogues (extra payment) Doubts: How to handle modifications in pricing plans? Let's say quantities change, or you want to offer some free stuff. How to handle unpaid invoices? I mean, freeze the service until the payment has been done and then resume it. When to make the invoices? The idea is to make one invoice for the monthly fee and a second invoice for the extra services that were consumed. What payment methods to use? The choosen now is by bank account, and mobile phone validation with a SMS. If user doesn't pay we call that phone and ask for payment. Any examples on billing online services will be welcome! Thanks!

• Use 3 monitors w/built-in intel adapter + two old nvidia PCI cards on 10.10?

- by Kendall Gifford
I'd like to move from windows with my current workstation. The only thing holding me back is that I have 3 monitors connected to the system and I really take advantage of the real estate when working. I just installed Ubuntu 10.10 on the system and one of the monitors is up and running just fine. This monitor is connected to the built-in Intel adapter. I also have two old nVidia GeForce4 MX 4000 (nv19pl) cards in my two PCI slots with two monitors connected to them respectively. I installed the legacy (and proprietary) nVidia drivers (the nvidia-96 package) that claims to support these old cards. Now the question is how to get X configured to use all adapters (using two different drivers) so I can use all three monitors (and is this even possible)? From what I've read, it looks like I'll have to write an xorg.conf file since the nVidia driver doesn't support the auto-magic configuration supported by other drivers. On this site: http://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Config it says that on 10.10 I just need to write an xorg.conf "containing only those sections and options that you need to override Xorg's autoconfigurated settings". So, does this mean I can get away with only including the nVidia-specific configuration stuff and all else will get auto-configured? Or, will providing a config with a "Device" section overrule the auto-magic from detecting/using the Intel adapter? I ran the included nvidia-xconfig to generate a basic, nVidia-specific xorg.conf but I'm hesitant to reboot with it in place, suspecting I'll have a screwed up display. Also, is there any way (any tool or command) to generate an xorg.conf from the current, auto-configured running state of an X session? If I have to write a full, complete config, I'd rather start with one that includes everything that's been auto-detected thus far (and merge it with my nVidia version). Anyhow, any info and thoughts are greatly appreciated (as are answers).

• Translation and Localization Resources for UX Designers

- by ultan o'broin
Here is a handy list of translation and localization-related resources for user experience professionals. Following these will help you design an easily translatable user experience. Most of the references here are for web pages or software. Fundamentally, remember your designs will be consumed globally, and never divorce the design process from the development or deployment effort that goes into bringing your designs to life in code. Ask yourself today: Do you know how the text you are using in your designs are delivered to the customer, even in English? Key areas that UX designers always seen to fall foul of, in my space anyway, are: Terminology that is impossible to translate (jargon, multiple modifiers, gerunds) or is used inconsistently Poorly written, verbose text (really, just write well in English, no special considerations) String construction (concatenation of parts assembled dynamically) Composite widget positioning (my favourite) Hard-coded fonts, small font sizes, or character formatting or casing that doesn't work globally Format that is not separate from content Restricted real estate not allowing for text expansion in translation Forcing formatting with breaks, and hard-coding alphabetical sorting Graphics that do not work in Bi-Di languages (because they indicate directionality and can't flip) or contain embedded text. The problems of culturally offensive icons are well known by now in the enterprise applications space, though there are some dangers, such as the use of flags to indicate language, for example. • SQL SERVER – A Cool Trick – Restoring the Default SQL Server Management Studio – SSMS

- by pinaldave
“I do not know where my windows went!” “I just closed my object explorer and now I cannot find it.” “How do I get my original windows layout back in SQL Server Management Studio?” “How do I get the window which was there in left side back again?” Since last 2-3 years, every single day I receive more than 5 emails on SSMS and its layout. For the beginners it is very common to get confused when they attempt to change SQL Server Management Studio’s windows layout. They often change the layout and are not able to get the original layout back. Often people do not change the layout whole of their life, leading to uncomfortable feeling when they go to another’s computer where the windows are differently placed. Today’s blog post is dedicated all the beginners in SQL Server. It is extremely simple to reset the SSMS layout to default layout. The default layout involves 2 major things 1) Object Explorer on left side 2) Query Windows on right side (80% screen estate). Personally I am so used to this as well that if there is any other changes in the same, I do not enjoy working on the environment. Well, the solution to rest the SSMS layout is very simple. One can do it in split seconds. To restore the default configuration, on the Window menu, click Reset Window Layout. Have you ever used this feature? Do you feel uncomfortable when SSMS layout is not in default state? How do you address this situation? • Alternate method to dependent, nested if statements to check multiple states

- by octopusgrabbus
Is there an easier way to process multiple true/false states than using nested if statements? I think there is, and it would be to create a sequence of states, and then use a function like when to determine if all states were true, and drop out if not. I am asking the question to make sure there is not a preferred Clojure way to do this. Here is the background of my problem: I have an application that depends on quite a few input files. The application depends on .csv data reports; column headers for each report (.csv files also), so each sequence in the sequence of sequences can be zipped together with its columns for the purposes of creating a smaller sequence; and column files for output data. I use the following functions to find out if a file is present: (defn kind [filename] (let [f (File. filename)] (cond (.isFile f) "file" (.isDirectory f) "directory" (.exists f) "other" :else "(cannot be found)" ))) (defn look-for [filename expected-type] (let [find-status (kind-stat filename expected-type)] find-status)) And here are the first few lines of a multiple if which looks ugly and is hard to maintain: (defn extract-re-values "Plain old-fashioned sub-routine to process real-estate values / 3rd Q re bills extract." [opts] (if (= (utl/look-for (:ifm1 opts) "f") 0) ; got re columns? (if (= (utl/look-for (:ifn1 opts) "f") 0) ; got re data? (if (= (utl/look-for (:ifm3 opts) "f") 0) ; got re values output columns? (if (= (utl/look-for (:ifm4 opts) "f") 0) ; got re_mixed_use_ratio columns? (let [re-in-col-nams (first (utl/fetch-csv-data (:ifm1 opts))) re-in-data (utl/fetch-csv-data (:ifn1 opts)) re-val-cols-out (first (utl/fetch-csv-data (:ifm3 opts))) mu-val-cols-out (first (utl/fetch-csv-data (:ifm4 opts))) chk-results (utl/chk-seq-len re-in-col-nams (first re-in-data) re-rec-count)] I am not looking for a discussion of the best way, but what is in Clojure that facilitates solving a problem like this.

• Decreasing the Height of the PinkMatter Flamingo Ribbon Bar

- by Geertjan
The one and only thing prohibiting wide adoption of PinkMatter's amazing Flamingo ribbon bar integration for NetBeans Platform applications (watch the YouTube movie here and follow the tutorial here) is... the amount of real estate taken up by the height of the taskpane: I was Skyping with Bruce Schubert about this and he suggested that a first step might me to remove the application menu. OK, once that had been done there was still a lot of height: But then I configured a bit further and now have this, which is pretty squishy but at least shows there are possibilities: How to get to the above point? Get the PinkMatter Flamingo ribbon bar from java.net (http://java.net/projects/nbribbonbar), which is now the official place where it is found, and then look in the "Flaming Integration" module. There you'll find com.pinkmatter.modules.flamingo.LayerRibbonComponentProvider. Do the following: Comment out "addAppMenu(ribbon);" in "createRibbon()". That's the end of the application menu. Change the "addTaskPanes(JRibbon ribbon)" method from this... private void addTaskPanes(JRibbon ribbon) { RibbonComponentFactory factory = new RibbonComponentFactory(); for (ActionItem item : ActionItems.forPath("Ribbon/TaskPanes")) {// NOI18N ribbon.addTask(factory.createRibbonTask(item)); } } ...to the following: private void addTaskPanes(JRibbon ribbon) { RibbonComponentFactory factory = new RibbonComponentFactory(); for (ActionItem item : ActionItems.forPath("Ribbon/TaskPanes")) { // NOI18N RibbonTask rt = factory.createRibbonTask(item); List<AbstractRibbonBand<?>> bands = rt.getBands(); for (AbstractRibbonBand arb : bands) { arb.setPreferredSize(new Dimension(40,60)); } ribbon.addTask(rt); } } Hurray, you're done. Not a very great result yet, but at least you've made a start in decreasing the height of the PinkMatter Flamingo ribbon bar. If anyone gets further with this, I'd be very happy to hear about it!

• Get to Know a Candidate (6 of 25): Jill Stein–Green Party

- by Brian Lanham
DISCLAIMER: This is not a post about “Romney” or “Obama”. This is not a post for whom I am voting. Information sourced for Wikipedia. Stein is a physician with degrees from Harvard College and Harvard Medical School. She serves on the boards of Greater Boston Physicians for Social Responsibility and MassVoters for Fair Elections, and has been active with the Massachusetts Coalition for Healthy Communities Jill Stein advocates a "Green New Deal" in which renewable energy jobs would be created to address climate change and environmental issues with the objective of employing "every American willing and able to work". Citing the research of Dr. Phillip Harvey, Professor of Law & Economics at Rutgers University, as evidence of the successful economic effects of the 1930s' New Deal projects, Stein would fund the plan with a 30% reduction in the U.S. military budget, returning US troops home, and increasing taxes on areas such as capital gains, offshore tax havens and multimillion dollar real estate. Stein plans on impacting what she sees as a growing convergence of environmental crises in water, soil, fisheries and forests, through the creation of sustainable infrastructure based in clean renewable energy generation and sustainable communities principles such as increasing intra-city mass transit and inter-city railroads, creating 'complete streets' that safely encourage bike and pedestrian traffic and regional food systems based on sustainable organic agriculture The Green Party of the United States was founded in 1991 as a voluntary association of state green parties. With its founding, the Green Party of the United States became the primary national Green organization in the United States, eclipsing the Greens/Green Party USA, which emphasized non-electoral movement building. The Green Party of the United States of America emphasizes environmentalism, non-hierarchical participatory democracy, social justice, respect for diversity, peace and nonviolence. Their "Ten Key Values," which are described as non-authoritative guiding principles, are as follows: Grassroots democracy Social justice and equal opportunity Ecological wisdom Nonviolence Decentralization Community-based economics Feminism and gender equality Respect for diversity Personal and global responsibility Future focus and sustainability The Green Party does not accept donations from corporations. Thus, the party's platforms and rhetoric critique any corporate influence and control over government, media, and American society at large. Stein has access to 403 electoral votes and is a write-in candidate in GA, IN, and MS Learn more about Jill Stein and Green Party on Wikipedia.

• sqlplus: Running "set lines" and "set pagesize" automatially

- by katsumii
This is a followup to my previous entry. Using the full tty real estate with sqlplus (INOUE Katsumi @ Tokyo) 'rlwrap' is widely used for adding 'sqlplus' the history function and command line editing. Here's another but again kludgy implementation. First this is the alias. alias sqlplus="rlwrap -z ~/sqlplus.filter sqlplus" And this is the file content. #!/usr/bin/env perl use lib ($ENV{RLWRAP_FILTERDIR} or "."); use RlwrapFilter; use POSIX qw(:signal_h); use strict; my $filter = new RlwrapFilter; $filter -> prompt_handler(\&prompt); sigprocmask(SIG_UNBLOCK, POSIX::SigSet->new(28)); $SIG{WINCH} = 'winchHandler'; $filter -> run; sub winchHandler { $filter -> input_handler(\&input); sigprocmask(SIG_UNBLOCK, POSIX::SigSet->new(28)); $SIG{WINCH} = 'winchHandler'; $filter -> run; } sub input { $filter -> input_handler(undef); return `resize |sed -n "1s/COLUMNS=/set linesize /p;2s/LINES=/set pagesize /p"` . $_; } sub prompt { if ($_ =~ "SQL> ") { $filter -> input_handler(\&input); $filter -> prompt_handler(undef); } return $_; } I hope I can compare these 2 implementations after testing more and getting some feedbacks.

• Does your organization still use the term "screens" to describe a user interface?

I have been in the field long enough to remember when the term "screen" entered our lexicon. As difficult as it is to believe, the early systems on which I worked had no user interface (UI), that is, unless one counts a keypunch machine and job listings as a user interface. These systems ran as "card image" production jobs back in a day when being a computer operator required a reasonably deep understanding of how computers worked. Flashing forward to today: I cringe every time I hear a systems practitioner use the term "screen." The metaphor no longer fits the medium. The term somewhat fit back when the user dialog consumed 100% of available monitor real estate; however, the term lost its relevance the moment we moved to windowed environments. With the above said, does your organization still use the term "screens" to describe an application's UI? Has anyone successfully purged the term from an organization? For those who do not use the term to describe UI dialog elements, what term do you use in place of “screen.”

• Geekswithblogs.net | Screen Resolutions of our Readers

- by Jeff Julian
Yesterday I talked about the Browsers we see being used by our readers driven off of our Google Analytics traffic and today I want to share with you the Screen Resolutions we see. As a web developer most of my life, it is hard to decide how large you should build your application because typically you have a couple huge high resolution monitors on your desk, but you typical end user is thought to have 1024x768. With HTML5/CSS3 out, it is a little better coming up with a design that will scale to all resolutions, but it is still nice to know the numbers when it comes to how much real estate do I have on my clients. If you look at these numbers for Geekswithblogs.net, we have a lot of high resolution monitors from users that visit the site. After a little more investigation of the number you will notice we do not have as much height available as we do width. If the primary goal of a site is to deliver as much data in the viewable area without scrolling, this becomes a challenge when most of our pages have long pieces of formatted data. So our challenge is to build skins that use up more of the sides of the content toward the top on larger resolution browsers and then entice the reader to scroll to get the goodies embedded in the content of the posts. Going to be an interesting battle for sure, but we really need more skin offerings on the site. • Release Notes for 6/14/2012

Here are the notes for this week’s release: Diffs in Pull Requests and Commits We altered the way we display diffs across commits and pull requests to maximize the amount of vertical real estate devoted to the diff. Before, the viewport for diffs was always snapped to the height of the browser, which meant that on lower resolutions, the amount of space for viewing diffs could become very tiny. Now, the majority of the browser vertical space is devoted to viewing the diffs. Let us know what you think! Bug Fixes Fixed an issue where returning to the list of files changed from a diff would sometimes not show the list of files. Fixed the dialogs for approving and denying requests to join projects. Fixed various issues around validation of project details when publishing a project. Fixed an issue that caused the formatting of our tabs in pull requests to not display properly. Fixed an issue where users browsing Unicode files in a Git project would see error pages. Fixed various issues where the option to subscribe to notifications would not appear properly. • The Product Owner

- by Robert May
In a previous post, I outlined the rules of Scrum. This post details one of those rules. Picking a most important part of Scrum is difficult. All of the rules are required, but if there were one rule that is “more” required that every other rule, its having a good Product Owner. Simply put, the Product Owner can make or break the project. Duties of the Product Owner A Product Owner has many duties and responsibilities. I’ll talk about each of these duties in detail below. A Product Owner: Discovers and records stories for the backlog. Prioritizes stories in the Product Backlog, Release Backlog and Iteration Backlog. Determines Release dates and Iteration Dates. Develops story details and helps the team understand those details. Helps QA to develop acceptance tests. Interact with the Customer to make sure that the product is meeting the customer’s needs. Discovers and Records Stories for the Backlog When I do Scrum, I always use User Stories as the means for capturing functionality that’s required in the system. Some people will use Use Cases, but the same rule applies. The Product Owner has the ultimate responsibility for figuring out what functionality will be in the system. Many different mechanisms for capturing this input can be used. User interviews are great, but all sources should be considered, including talking with Customer Support types. Often, they hear what users are struggling with the most and are a great source for stories that can make the application easier to use. Care should be taken when soliciting user stories from technical types such as programmers and the people that manage them. They will almost always give stories that are very technical in nature and may not have a direct benefit for the end user. Stories are about adding value to the company. If the stories don’t have direct benefit to the end user, the Product Owner should question whether or not the story should be implemented. In general, technical stories should be included as tasks in User Stories. Technical stories are often needed, but the ultimate value to the user is in user based functionality, so technical stories should be considered nothing more than overhead in providing that user functionality. Until the iteration prior to development, stories should be nothing more than short, one line placeholders. An exercise called Story Planning can be used to brainstorm and come up with stories. I’ll save the description of this activity for another blog post. For more information on User Stories, please read the book User Stories Applied by Mike Cohn. Prioritizes Stories in the Product Backlog, Release Backlog and Iteration Backlog Prioritization of stories is one of the most difficult tasks that a Product Owner must do. A key concept of Scrum done right is the need to have the team working from a single set of prioritized stories. If the team does not have a single set of prioritized stories, Scrum will likely fail at your organization. The Product Owner is the ONLY person who has the responsibility to prioritize that list. The Product Owner must be very diplomatic and sincerely listen to the people around him so that he can get the priorities correct. Just listening will still not yield the proper priorities. Care must also be taken to ensure that Return on Investment is also considered. Ultimately, determining which stories give the most value to the company for the least cost is the most important factor in determining priorities. Product Owners should be willing to look at cold, hard numbers to determine the order for stories. Even when many people want a feature, if that features is costly to develop, it may not have as high of a return on investment as features that are cheaper, but not as popular. The act of prioritization often causes conflict in an environment. Customer Service thinks that feature X is the most important, because it will stop people from calling. Operations thinks that feature Y is the most important, because it will stop servers from crashing. Developers think that feature Z is most important because it will make writing software much easier for them. All of these are useful goals, but the team can have only one list of items, and each item must have a priority that is different from all other stories. The Product Owner will determine which feature gives the best return on investment and the other features will have to wait their turn, which means that someone will not have their top priority feature implemented first. A weak Product Owner will refuse to do prioritization. I’ve heard from multiple Product Owners the following phrase, “Well, it’s all got to be done, so what does it matter what order we do it in?” If your product owner is using this phrase, you need a new Product Owner. Order is VERY important. In Scrum, every release is potentially shippable. If the wrong priority items are developed, then the value added in each release isn’t what it should be. Additionally, the Product Owner with this mindset doesn’t understand Agile. A product is NEVER finished, until the company has decided that it is no longer a going concern and they are no longer going to sell the product. Therefore, prioritization isn’t an event, its something that continues every day. The logical extension of the phrase “It’s all got to be done” is that you will never ship your product, since a product is never “done.” Once stories have been prioritized, assigning them to the Release Backlog and the Iteration Backlog becomes relatively simple. The top priority items are copied into the respective backlogs in order and the task is complete. The team does have the right to shuffle things around a little in the iteration backlog. For example, they may determine that working on story C with story A is appropriate because they’re related, even though story B is technically a higher priority than story C. Or they may decide that story B is too big to complete in the time available after Story A has tasks created, so they’ll work on Story C since it’s smaller. They can’t, however, go deep into the backlog to pick stories to implement. The team and the Product Owner should work together to determine what’s best for the company. Prioritization is time consuming, but its one of the most important things a Product Owner does. Determines Release Dates and Iteration Dates Product owners are responsible for determining release dates for a product. A common misconception that Product Owners have is that every “release” needs to correspond with an actual release to customers. This is not the case. In general, releases should be no more than 3 months long. You may decide to release the product to the customers, and many companies do release the product to customers, but it may also be an internal release. If a release date is too far away, developers will fall into the trap of not feeling a sense of urgency. The date is far enough away that they don’t need to give the release their full attention. Additionally, important tasks, such as performance tuning, regression testing, user documentation, and release preparation, will not happen regularly, making them much more difficult and time consuming to do. The more frequently you do these tasks, the easier they are to accomplish. The Product Owner will be a key participant in determining whether or not a release should be sent out to the customers. The determination should be made on whether or not the features contained in the release are valuable enough and complete enough that the customers will see real value in the release. Often, some features will take more than three months to get them to a state where they qualify for a release or need additional supporting features to be released. The product owner has the right to make this determination. In addition to release dates, the Product Owner also will help determine iteration dates. In general, an iteration length should be chosen and the team should follow that iteration length for an extended period of time. If the iteration length is changed every iteration, you’re not doing Scrum. Iteration lengths help the team and company get into a rhythm of developing quality software. Iterations should be somewhere between 2 and 4 weeks in length. Any shorter, and significant software will likely not be developed. Any longer, and the team won’t feel urgency and planning will become very difficult. Iterations may not be extended during the iteration. Companies where Scrum isn’t really followed will often use this as a strategy to complete all stories. They don’t want to face the harsh reality of what their true performance is, and looking good is more important than seeking visibility and improving the process and team. Companies like this typically don’t allow failure. This is unhealthy. Failure is part of life and unless we learn from it, we can’t improve. I would much rather see a team push out stories to the next iteration and then have healthy discussions about why they failed rather than extend the iteration and not deal with the core problems. If iteration length varies, retrospectives become more difficult. For example, evaluating the performance of the team’s estimation efforts becomes much more difficult if the iteration length varies. Also, the team must have a velocity measurement. If the iteration length varies, measuring velocity becomes impossible and upper management no longer will have the ability to evaluate the teams performance. People external to the team will no longer have the ability to determine when key features are likely to be developed. Variable iterations cause the entire company to fail and likely cause Scrum to fail at an organization. Develops Story Details and Helps the Team Understand Those Details A key concept in Scrum is that the stories are nothing more than a placeholder for a conversation. Stories should be nothing more than short, one line statements about the functionality. The team will then converse with the Product Owner about the details about that story. The product owner needs to have a very good idea about what the details of the story are and needs to be able to help the team understand those details. Too often, we see this requirement as being translated into the need for comprehensive documentation about the story, including old fashioned requirements documentation. The team should only develop the documentation that is required and should not develop documentation that is only created because their is a process to do so. In general, what we see that works best is the iteration before a team starts development work on a story, the Product Owner, with other appropriate business analysts, will develop the details of that story. They’ll figure out what business rules are required, potentially make paper prototypes or other light weight mock-ups, and they seek to understand the story and what is implied. Note that the time allowed for this task is deliberately short. The Product Owner only has a single iteration to develop all of the stories for the next iteration. If more than one iteration is used, I’ve found that teams will end up with Big Design Up Front and traditional requirements documents. This is a waste of time, since the team will need to then have discussions with the Product Owner to figure out what the requirements document says. Instead of this, skip making the pretty pictures and detailing the nuances of the requirements and build only what is minimally needed by the team to do development. If something comes up during development, you can address it at that time and figure out what you want to do. The goal is to keep things as light weight as possible so that everyone can move as quickly as possible. Helps QA to Develop Acceptance Tests In Scrum, no story can be counted until it is accepted by QA. Because of this, acceptance tests are very important to the team. In general, acceptance tests need to be developed prior to the iteration or at the very beginning of the iteration so that the team can make sure that the tasks that they develop will fulfill the acceptance criteria. The Product Owner will help the team, including QA, understand what will make the story acceptable. Note that the Product Owner needs to be careful about specifying that the feature will work “Perfectly” at the end of the iteration. In general, features are developed a little bit at a time, so only the bit that is being developed should be considered as necessary for acceptance. A weak Product Owner will make statements like “Do it right the first time.” Not only are these statements damaging to the team (like they would try to do it WRONG the first time . . .), they’re also ignoring the iterative nature of Scrum. Additionally, a weak product owner will seek to add scope in the acceptance testing. For example, they will refuse to determine acceptance at the beginning of the iteration, and then, after the team has planned and committed to the iteration, they will expand scope by defining acceptance. This often causes the team to miss the iteration because scope that wasn’t planned on is included. There are ways that the team can mitigate this problem. For example, include extra “Product Owner” time to deal with the uncertainty that you know will be introduced by the Product Owner. This will slow the perceived velocity of the team and is not ideal, since they’ll be doing more work than they get credit for. Interact with the Customer to Make Sure that the Product is Meeting the Customer’s Needs Once development is complete, what the team has worked on should be put in front of real live people to see if it meets the needs of the customer. One of the great things about Agile is that if something doesn’t work, we can revisit it in a future iteration! This frees up the team to make the best decision now and know that if that decision proves to be incorrect, the team can revisit it and change that decision. Features are about adding value to the customer, so if the customer doesn’t find them useful, then having the team make tweaks is valuable. In general, most software will be 80 to 90 percent “right” after the initial round and only minor tweaks are required. If proper coding standards are followed, these tweaks are usually minor and easy to accomplish. Product Owners that are doing a good job will encourage real users to see and use the software, since they know that they are trying to add value to the customer. Poor product owners will think that they know the answers already, that their customers are silly and do stupid things and that they don’t need customer input. If you have a product owner that is afraid to show the team’s work to real customers, you probably need a different product owner. • Android Device Chooser -- device not showing up

- by mportiz08
I'm using the android plugin for eclipse, and when I try to run my program using a real device through the android device chooser, my phone is not listed as a device. I have updated eclipse and all of the android packages, but it still isn't showing up. My phone is running 1.6, which is also the target version listed in the eclipse project. Also, the reason I decided to try testing on a real device is because the emulator doesn't seem to be working right anymore when I run my project. The emulator launches, but the program never does. Any ideas? (using windows 7/t-mobile mytouch 3g)

• Is there a Windows equivalent for eventfd?

- by Leaurus
I am writing a cross-platform library which emulates sockets behaviour, having additional functionality in the between (App-mylib-sockets). I want it to be the most transparent possible for the programmer, so primitives like select and poll must work with accordingly with this lib. The problem is when data becomes available (for instance) in the real socket, it will have to go through a lot of processing, so if select points to the real socket fd, app will be blocked a lot of time. I want the select/poll to unblock only when data is ready to be consumed (after my lib has done all the processing). So I came across this eventfd which allows me to do exactly what I want, i.e. to manipule select/poll behaviour on a given fd. Since I am much more familiarized with Linux environment, I don't know what is the windows equivalent of eventfd. Tried to search but got no luck. Anyone can help me, please?

• Database Design for a double entry accounting system

- by Khou
Should journal entries be recorded in a database design? In the real world it makes sense to keep a daily entry book, then later transfer the daily entry book into double entry accounts. but in the computerized version, doing this produces duplicate records and that doesn't quite make sense? ???? What i mean is 1) user enter details , it gets recorded (this would be called the journalbook in real life) 2) the software does all the double entry accounting then references the journalbook and splits up the transaction into the double entry accounting system.

• Recommendation for high performance WPF Chart

- by Ajaxx
We're working on a WPF-based desktop application that charts financial markets information (candlestick charts, overlayed indicator curves, volume, etc). The charts are displayed in real-time with responses to market ticks being shown in real-time (updating one to two times per second is probably a reasonable display refresh policy). We've been looking for a software package (commercial is fine by us) that has the capability of displaying these charts. Additionally, we'd like to have an approach that can render the initial amount of data in a reasonable timeframe (give or take 100-200ms from the time we hand the data over to a complete render on screen). Also we view multiple charts (5-10) simultaneously so a solution that chews up 50% of my CPU to display one chart really isn't going to work well. Has anyone had any good experiences with charting controls. We've had to hand roll the last few charts we've done and I'd prefer not to do it again. Solutions that can make use of the GPU to minimize CPU utilization would be nice as well.
