  • Smarter System Alerts

    We have a pretty simple system setup, where I get text messages when there is a system problem. It's nothing fancy. I send an email to my phone number within my logging class for alert levels. It works well enough, but it has one major flaw: A small hiccup in the system/site can turn into dozens of rapid fire text messages. Sometimes non-stop text messages until I log into the system and fix the problem. So I'm looking for pointers on software or services I can use that deal with alerts in a smarter way. Perhaps something that only sends me alerts X number of times within Y number of minutes. I'm not looking for a full monitoring suite. We already deal with that in house. I'm only looking to tackle this single problem.

    I am looking for a FREE tool to perform analyses on the NTFS file system of my Windows 7 PC. I want to easily see the amount of data distributed throught out the entire file system. The following applications seem very good, but they are not free and probably overkill for my requirements: FolderSizes 5 MailMeter Windows File System Reporting Tool I am aware that some applications (like Folder Size 2.5) can add a column in Windows Explorer to show the size of each folder, but I am looking for something more like a reporting tool.   • Remote Desktop access Windows 7 system from Windows 8

    I have 2 systems; Windows 7 & Windows 8. Both are connected to WiFi router. They have been assigned address 192.168.2.8 & 192.168.2.9 respectively. I have added them to home group. I am able to ping and connect Windows 8 system from Windows 7. I am having trouble connecting Windows 7 system from Windows 8 system. I can't even ping Windows 7 system. Windows 7 system's user is administrator (default administrator account from secpol.msc). File sharing, Remote Access, network discovery are all enabled. Someone please help me connect. EDIT : I found that this is the issue of Kaspersky Internet Security 2012. If I disable firewall, it works. I tried opening port 3389 in Kaspersky. It is still blocking access.

  • Best way to restore individual folders via Time Machine after clean Lion install?

    I'm doing a clean erase and install of Lion, and am looking for the best way to restore individual folders into my home directory via Time Machine. I've done a dummy run, clean Lion install, then 'browse other disks' in Time Machine, navigate to my home folder and 'restore' what I need, such as pictures/music and folders inside the .library folder (such as Mail and Keychains). However this method seems to give you odd permissions, like this: http://i43.tinypic.com/15y82v4.png Hence I wondered if anyone knows what the best method is to restore files and folders after a clean install. N.b I do not want to use the migration assistant, or 'restore OS from Time Machine' - as I specifically want to do a clean install, and just copy over what I need (some folders will be moved onto a separate disk to the OS, and some will remain on the same disk).   • W2K INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE, with System Commander

    I have a system that was originally had Win NT. I added System Commander (SC7) and then added W2K. The relevant partitions are: 0 - Primary - MultiFAT (Has Win NT, mapped to C:) 1 - Extended - with many logical partitions: 1.1 NTFS which has W2K and is mapped to D: 1.2 other logical partitions which are irrelevant to this D: was getting full. It needed room for virus definitions and Windows upgrades. In the past, I had simple used SC7 to resize D: without problems. So I did it again this time. However, upon finishing, I got the message "Unable to create partition". It also marked the partition as unformatted. I checked that the files on the disk were still there using SC7's Partition Explorer, and they were there. I continued and the system managed to boot up fine anyways. Then I rebooted the system again. This time, I got a message saying "INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE". I went back in to SC7 and to Partition Commander, and it was still saying that the partition was unformatted but the Partition Explorer still showed the files on the system. I finally decided to resize the partition again, figuring that this would force a rewrite of the partition information. That seemed to work, until I had to reboot again. Now I can't see the files using Partition Explorer, and the Resize button is now disabled. What now?

    I formatted the drive and re-installed Windows 7 64-bit on a Toshiba Satellite C855D-S5232. Now I am missing the graphics accelerator. I have been to Toshiba's website but cannot find the right one. Same is so for AMD. It has AMD E1-1200 APU with Radeon HD Graphics. The machine is recognizing a standard VGA. I ordered a recovery disk on eBay and it was supposed to be here yesterday. Can anyone help with other options?

    I have a system with two identical 1TB harddrives, where I image to a backup drive using the dd command. When I boot up, though, despite setting harddrive priority in the BIOS, the system sometimes boots the main drive, sometimes boots the backup. My system dual-boots Xubuntu and Windows XP, if that means anything to you. Any ideas?

    One of the CPU fans on my Compaq Presario laptop running Ubuntu 9.10 seems to have bit the dust. The fan is deep within the case and I intend to replace the laptop in the next 6 months so it's not worth replacing it. I have the laptop on a cooling pad and most of the time the system is fine, CPU temps around 90°-110°F. Occasionally, however, I'm seeing random lockups which I believe is due to the system overheating. How can I configure the system to: Lower the CPU speed when the temperature reaches a certain level? (I.E. 110°F) Shutdown the system when the tempature reaches a critical level? (And what would that be? 130°?)

  • Change the location of the System Temp directory on Windows 2003 Server

    In order to update an application on a Windows 2003 Server box, the application calls for 2.0 GB of free space in the System's Temp directory. The OS is on C:\ , and there is only 1 GB of free space there.... The server has a RAID configuration for its data on the system's E:\ . There is over 100GB of free space on E:\ . When I did a set tmp I found that the system's TEMP directory is not surprisingly located on C:\ .... TMP = C:\DOCUME~1\ADMINI~1.DES\LOCALS~1\Temp I assume it is possible to change the System Temp directory to the be located on E:\ ? How is this done, where's a good place to stick it, and is it safe to do this ?

  • Hyper-V causes boot loop/failure on a non-Gigabyte Win8 Pro system

    Hardware: Intel i7 2600K (not overclocked, SLAT compatible, virt. features enabled in bios) Asus Maximus IV Extreme-Z (Z68) 16Gb RAM 256Gb SSD Other non-trivial working parts Adding Hyper-V is causing a boot loop resulting in an attempt at automatic repair by Windows 8 after the second or third loop: I'm trying to get the Windows Phone 8 SDK installed and I've narrowed down my troubles to the Hyper-V feature in Win8. This is required to run the WP8 emulator and there are no install options to omit this feature. My first attempt completely borked the OS as I did not have a recent restore point or system image, so I did a completely clean install and made plenty of backups/restore points. I skipped the SDK install and went straight for the windows feature add-on for Hyper-V. This confirmed that Hyper-V is the issue as the same behavior resulted. I cannot find any hint in the Event Logs. Cancelling automatic recovery causes the same behavior to repeat. I don't have any other VM products installed. My only recourse is to use a restore point, try something else, install it again, and see what happens. No luck so far. I'm on my 10th attempt here. Any help would be much appreciated. I also attempted disabling the usb 3.0 controller as the msdn topic lists an issue with USB controllers on Gigabyte boards. This also doesn't work. The USB devices light up but no input is received by the OS. All of my other bios CPU settings are in line with the info in the post. I'm totally stumped.     I am installing postfix and I am confused what to put for the system mail name. It has an exmaple that sais use "example.org" if a mail address on the system is "[email protected]" but it also sais that the mail name should be the FQDN. my hostname is "mercury" and my FQDN is "mercury.pacificseatheat.org", so should I use "pacificseatheat.org" or "mercury.pacificseatheat.org" for the system mail name?   • Num Lock of laptop working strangely [Dell Vostro 1710]

    My laptop model is Dell Vostro 17" and it has numeric keypad. The problem is that its Num Lock key works very strange. Sometimes when I press it the information led of Num Lock activates, but sometimes when I try to activate numeric keypad it refuses and this led doesn't activate and therefore numeric keypad doesn't work at all. Does it mean that I need to change my keyboard at all? In addition Esc key doesn't work for a long time. I think the main reason for that is my son (2year old) who started playing with my laptop from his 1st year. If I need to change the keyboard where can I buy it for a good price, because in Dell I think when I called them 2-3 months ago they offered me keyboard for about more then 50Euros. Currently I live in Spain. Thanks.

(Implying that ALL of them are "formatting methods"... even #3) Reformat using NTFS (quick) Reformat using NTFS Leave the current file-system intact (no changes) What choice #3 really mean? Does it mean: A. Leave the current file-system (whatever file-system is already in use) and reformat to match that. (ie. If you current have NTFS, reformat to that again. If you currently have FAT32, reformat to that again. That is: Reformat without changing to a different file-system. Leave the current type.) or... B. Do absolutely nothing. Don't format. Don't delete any of my files. Abort the formatting process entirely.

  • Screen flicker -> Severe System Slowdown?

    I'm using a Dell D830 laptop, and over the last few weeks it's been developing a very irritating screen flicker problem that leads to the system slowing down almost to the point of unusability. At seemingly random times (no commonality between how long the system has been running, what I was doing, what applications were open, etc.) my screen (I use two external LCD's with the laptop closed in a dock) flickers for a moment, then the system becomes incredibly slow. The screen redraws painfully slowly--almost like what you might expect to see with generic graphics drivers installed--and the entire system is maddeningly unresponsive. The only thing that seems to be able to correct the issue is a restart. I've checked the event logs and nothing out of the ordinary is there, and definitely nothing that's common to all of the events. I'm running XP Pro SP2. Any ideas?

  • Unecrypted Image of Truecrypt-Encrypted System Partition

    The general tenor around the internet seems to be that you can't create images of system partitions that have been encrypted (with truecrypt) other than with dd or similar sector-by-sector copy tools. These files however are very impractical given their size (and are obviously incompressible) which makes keeping multiple states/backups of your system partition rather expensive (..especially considering current hdd prices). The problem is that backup tools (like Acronis True Image, Clonezilla, etc.) won't give you the option to create an image of (mounted/opened) Truecrypt partitions, or that there is no recovery environment for restoring the backup, that would allow to run truecrypt before doing any actual restoring. After some trial and error however, I believe I have found a very simple way. Since Truecrypt (running in Linux) creates a virtual block device, that it uses for mounting the unencrypted partitions into the file system, partclone can be used for creating/restoring images. What I did: boot up a linux live disk mount/open the drive/device/partition in truecrypt unmount the filesystem mount point again, like so: umount /media/truecryptX ("X" being the partition number assigend by truecrypt) use partclone (this is what clonezilla would do too, except that clonezilla only offers you to back up real drive partitions, not virtual block devices): partclone.ntfs -c -s /dev/mapper/truecryptX -o nameOfBackupFile for restoring steps 1-3 remain the same, and step 4 is partclone.ntfs -r -s nameOfBackupFile -o /dev/mapper/truecryptX A backup and test-restore of the system (with this method) seems to have worked fine (and the changed settings were reverted to the backup-state). The backup file is ~40 GB (and compressible down to <8GB with 7zip/LZMA2 on the "fast" setting). I can't quite believe that I'm the only one that wants to create images of encrypted drives, but doesn't want to waste 100GB on the backup of one single system state. So my question now is, given how simple this was, and that no one seems to mention anywhere that this is possible - did I miss something? or did I do something wrong? Is there any situation that I didn't think of where this method will fail? Obviously, the backup file needs to be stored in some other encrypted place in order to still remain confidential, since it is unencrypted. Also, in order to do a full "bare metal" restore, one would have to actually first (re-)install Windows, encrypt it, and only then restore the backup file. The funny thing however is that you won't need to backup any partition tables, etc. since the reinstall will effectively take care of that. Is there anything else? This is imho still a lot better than having sector-by-sector images..
