  • Unit Test to Run .sql script to SQL Create Database

    - by Lee Englestone
Can anyone point me in the direction of how I could get a NUnit test to run a .sql file to Create / Setup a database. I know about the the TestFixtureSetUp and TestFixtureTearDown attributes / methods in NUnit. So I KNOW how to call methods before and after all or each unit tests. I'm just unsure of how to load and execute the contents of a .sql file agains a SQL Server 2005 database programatically. Any examples? This is part of our TDD / CI. We are wanting to create the database before and tear down the database after executing unit tests. Cheers, -- Lee

  • Delphi debug a wrong unit

    - by Averroes
This is an odd behaviour by my D2006 as it happens sometimes only. I have a project I want to debug. The file I want to debug is named 'Main.pas'. I have another unrelated project with the same Unit name and sometimes the Debug prompt me the wrong Main file instead of the Main unit from the current project. This have happened to me with other files with the same name. I can't debug then as the debug keys don't work (they just don't do anything). Do you have experienced the same problem? How can I fix it? Thanks.

  • C#: AutoFixture refactoring

    - by Thomas Jaskula
    Hello, I started to use AutoFixture http://autofixture.codeplex.com/ as my unit tests was bloated with a lot of data setup. I was spending more time on seting up the data than to write my unit test. Here's an example of how my initial unit test looks like (example taken from cargo application sample from DDD blue book) [Test] public void should_create_instance_with_correct_ctor_parameters() { var carrierMovements = new List<CarrierMovement>(); var deparureUnLocode1 = new UnLocode("AB44D"); var departureLocation1 = new Location(deparureUnLocode1, "HAMBOURG"); var arrivalUnLocode1 = new UnLocode("XX44D"); var arrivalLocation1 = new Location(arrivalUnLocode1, "TUNIS"); var departureDate1 = new DateTime(2010, 3, 15); var arrivalDate1 = new DateTime(2010, 5, 12); var carrierMovement1 = new CarrierMovement(departureLocation1, arrivalLocation1, departureDate1, arrivalDate1); var deparureUnLocode2 = new UnLocode("CXRET"); var departureLocation2 = new Location(deparureUnLocode2, "GDANSK"); var arrivalUnLocode2 = new UnLocode("ZEZD4"); var arrivalLocation2 = new Location(arrivalUnLocode2, "LE HAVRE"); var departureDate2 = new DateTime(2010, 3, 18); var arrivalDate2 = new DateTime(2010, 3, 31); var carrierMovement2 = new CarrierMovement(departureLocation2, arrivalLocation2, departureDate2, arrivalDate2); carrierMovements.Add(carrierMovement1); carrierMovements.Add(carrierMovement2); new Schedule(carrierMovements).ShouldNotBeNull(); } Here's how I tried to refactor it with AutoFixture [Test] public void should_create_instance_with_correct_ctor_parameters_AutoFixture() { var fixture = new Fixture(); fixture.Register(() => new UnLocode(UnLocodeString())); var departureLoc = fixture.CreateAnonymous<Location>(); var arrivalLoc = fixture.CreateAnonymous<Location>(); var departureDateTime = fixture.CreateAnonymous<DateTime>(); var arrivalDateTime = fixture.CreateAnonymous<DateTime>(); fixture.Register<Location, Location, DateTime, DateTime, CarrierMovement>( (departure, arrival, departureTime, arrivalTime) => new CarrierMovement(departureLoc, arrivalLoc, departureDateTime, arrivalDateTime)); var carrierMovements = fixture.CreateMany<CarrierMovement>(50).ToList(); fixture.Register<List<CarrierMovement>, Schedule>((carrierM) => new Schedule(carrierMovements)); var schedule = fixture.CreateAnonymous<Schedule>(); schedule.ShouldNotBeNull(); } private static string UnLocodeString() { var stringBuilder = new StringBuilder(); for (int i = 0; i < 5; i++) stringBuilder.Append(GetRandomUpperCaseCharacter(i)); return stringBuilder.ToString(); } private static char GetRandomUpperCaseCharacter(int seed) { return ((char)((short)'A' + new Random(seed).Next(26))); } I would like to know if there's better way to refactor it. Would like to do it shorter and easier than that. Thanks in advance for your help.

  • ExpectedException on TestMethod Visual Studio 2010

    - by Joop
Today I upgraded my solution with all the underlying projects from VS2008 to VS2010. Everything went well except for my unit tests. First of all only the web projects had as target framework .NET 4. All the other projects still had .NET 3.5. I changed them all to .NET 4. Now when I debug my unit tests it breaks on every exception. In 2008 it just wouldn't pass and tell me that an exception occurred. Even when I have the ExpectedException attribute defined it stops debugging on every exception. And example of one of my tests: [TestMethod] [ExpectedException(typeof(EntityDoesNotExistException))] public void ConstructorTest() { AddressType type = new AddressType(int.MaxValue); } The EntityDoesNotExistException is a custom exception and inherits Exception.

  • WAMP phpundercontrol installation guide / tutorial

    - by Shiro
Our team just thinking to start using php unit test for our problem. I not able to find a complete tutorial or installation which is install phpundercontrol in WAMP environment, I have no any experience about php unit test, but we know we need it. Our goal is everyday we would like to build the project, so we know where is the bug happen. We also would like to learn more collaboration between the team. I would like to ask / someone to teach, how to start install phpundercontrol in WAMP environment, or some link might be help. I did some research, most of the page I found kind of outdated, the command they provided doesn't work for me. Thank you so much.

  • How can a Windows program temporarily change its time zone?

    - by Rob Kennedy
I've written a function to return the time_t value corresponding to midnight on a given day. When there is no midnight for a given day, it returns the earliest time available; that situation can occur, for example, when Egypt enters daylight-saving time. This year, the time change takes effect at midnight on the night of April 29, so the clock goes directly from 23:59 to 01:00. Now I'm writing unit tests for this function, and one of the tests should replicate the Egypt scenario. In Unix, I can accomplish it like this: putenv("TZ", "Egypt", true); tzset(); After doing that, further calls to localtime behave as if they're in Egypt instead of Minnesota, and my tests pass. Merely setting the environment variable doesn't have any effect on Windows, though. What can I do to make the unit test think it's somewhere else without affecting the rest of the programs running on the system?

  • moqing static method call to c# library class

    - by Joe
This seems like an easy enough issue but I can't seem to find the keywords to effect my searches. I'm trying to unit test by mocking out all objects within this method call. I am able to do so to all of my own creations except for this one: public void MyFunc(MyVarClass myVar) { Image picture; ... picture = Image.FromStream(new MemoryStream(myVar.ImageStream)); ... } FromStream is a static call from the Image class (part of c#). So how can I refactor my code to mock this out because I really don't want to provide a image stream to the unit test.

  • Free Testing / Code Coverage systems for C++

    - by Billy ONeal
I'd like to start using a Test Driven Development system for a private project since I saw my employer using it and realized it was very useful. My employer's project was in C# but mines are in C and C++. I looked around and saw that several packages exist for both Java and .NET (for example: NCover, NUnit, ...). Unfortunately I found it difficult to find good C++ testing frameworks. Do you know of any unit testing frameworks that satisfy the following requirements? IMPORTANT: Must provide code coverage statistics, as I'd like to have some idea of how well my tests cover my code-base. Must be free Usable with C++ projects EDIT: To be clear, I know of many existing unit test frameworks. The code coverage piece is what's most important.

  • Mocking imported modules in Python

    - by Evgenyt
I'm trying to implement unit tests for function that uses imported external objects. For example helpers.py is: import os import pylons def some_func(arg): ... var1 = os.path.exist(...) var2 = os.path.getmtime(...) var3 = pylons.request.environ['HTTP_HOST'] ... So when I'm creating unit test for it I do some mocking (minimock in my case) and replacing references to pylons.request and os.path: import helpers def test_some_func(): helpers.pylons.request = minimock.Mock("pylons.request") helpers.pylons.request.environ = { 'HTTP_HOST': "localhost" } helpers.os.path = minimock.Mock(....) ... some_func(...) # assert ... This does not look good for me. Is there any other better way or strategy to substitute imported function/objects in Python?

  • Access inner function variables in Javascript

    - by Elazar Leibovich
In many frameworks, internal function variables are used as private variables, for example Raphael = (function(){ var private = function(a,b) {return a+b;}; var public = function(a) {return private(a,a);} var object = {mult2:public}; return object; })(); here, we cannot access from the global namespace the variable named private, as it is an inner variable of the anonymous function in the first line. Sometimes this function is contains a big Javascript framework, so that it wouldn't pollute the global namespace. I need to unit tests some object Raphael uses internally (in the above example, I wish to run unit tests on the object private). How can I test them?

  • SQL Azure server as unit of billing

    - by vtortola
Hi, One of the azure training kit presentation says: Each account has zero or more logical servers Provisioned via a common portal Establishes a billing instrument Each logical server has one or more databases Contains metadata about database & usage Unit of authentication, geo-location, billing, reporting Generated DNS-based name Each database has standard SQL objects Users, Tables, Views, Indices, etc Unit of consistency So now I'm lost :D. Were not the databases themselves the units of billing? I mean, I thought that servers were just like logical containers and you were charged per number and size of databases. How servers are billed? Thanks.

  • Expected specifier-qualifier-list before 'CGPoint'

    - by Rob
My project compiles and runs fine unless I try to compile my Unit Test Bundle it bombs out on the following with an "Expected specifier-qualifier-list before 'CGPoint'" error on line 5: #import <Foundation/Foundation.h> #import "Force.h" @interface WorldObject : NSObject { CGPoint coordinates; float altitude; NSMutableDictionary *forces; } @property (nonatomic) CGPoint coordinates; @property (nonatomic) float altitude; @property (nonatomic, retain) NSMutableDictionary *forces; - (void)setObject:(id)anObject inForcesForKey:(id)aKey; - (void)removeObjectFromForcesForKey:(id)aKey; - (id)objectFromForcesForKey:(id)aKey; - (void)applyForces; @end I have made sure that my Unit Test Bundle is a target of my WorldObject.m and it's header is imported in my testing header: #define USE_APPLICATION_UNIT_TEST 1 #import <SenTestingKit/SenTestingKit.h> #import <UIKit/UIKit.h> #import "Force.h" #import "WorldObject.h" @interface LogicTests : SenTestCase { Force *myForce; WorldObject *myWorldObject; } @end

  • How to access Dispatcher in Silverlight tests?

    - by bluebit
I am using the SL unit test framework for tests (http://code.msdn.microsoft.com/silverlightut). My code is heavily client-server communications dependant, and I access the GUI dispatcher in several places to make sure important data is only accessed on a single thread (ie. the GUI thread). This dispatcher seems unavailable in the unit tests - I have tried using Deployment.Current.Dispatcher and even created an instance of a blank control to try use its own dispatcher, but both don't work. The code inside of Dispatcher.BeginInvoke() just never executes, even if I include a Thread.Sleep afterwards.

  • Given a short (2-week) sprint, is it ever acceptable to forgo TDD to "get things done"?

    - by Ben Aston
Given a short sprint, is it ever acceptable to forgo TDD to "get things done" within the sprint. For example a given piece of work might need say 1/3 of the sprint to design the object model around an existing implementation. Under this scenario you might well end up with implemented code, say half way through the sprint, without any tests (implementing unit tests during this "design" stage would add significant effort and the tests would likely be thrown away a few times until the final "design" is settled upon). You might then spend a day or two in the second week adding in unit / integration tests after the fact. Is this acceptable?

  • Is there a way to force JUnit to fail on ANY unchecked exception, even if swallowed

    - by Uri
I am using JUnit to write some higher level tests for legacy code that does not have unit tests. Much of this code "swallows" a variety of unchecked exceptions like NullPointerExceptions (e.g., by just printing stack trace and returning null). Therefore the unit test can pass even through there is a cascade of disasters at various points in the lower level code. Is there any way to have a test fail on the first unchecked exception even if they are swallowed? The only alternative I can think of is to write a custom JUnit wrapper that redirects System.err and then analyzes the output for exceptions.

  • Keyboard locking up in Visual Studio 2010, Part 2

    - by Jim Wang
Last week I posted about looking into the keyboard locking up issue in Visual Studio.  So far it looks like not a lot of people have replied to provide concrete repro steps, which confirms my suspicion that this is somewhat of a random issue. So at this point, I have a couple of choices.  I can either wait for somebody in the community to provide a repro of the problem that I can reliably run into, or I can do the work myself. I’m going to do both, so while I’m waiting for more possible bug reports, I’m going to write a tool that models the behavior of a typical Visual Studio user and use that to hopefully isolate the problem. I’ve chosen to go with this path since given the information in the bug reports, it seems people hit the issue with many different configurations in many different scenarios.  This means that me sitting down without any solid repro steps is likely not going to be a good use of time.  Instead, I’m going to go with a model-based testing approach where I will define a series of actions that a user in VS can do, and then proceed to run my model.  I’ll let you guys know how this works out for isolating bugs :) I’m using an internal tool for the model engine and AutoIt for the UI automation (I want something lightweight for a one-off).  One of the challenges will be getting feedback: AutoIt is great at driving, but not so great at understanding what success and failure means.

  • Technical development decision for my newly established software company

    - by test test
I have a new software company where I am planning to develop CRM system. So I have settled down on the technological approach I am going to use:- I will use an open source Java-based CRM engine. I will use a third party reporting tool named JasperReports for providing reports capabilities for the CRM. I will develop the interface and any customization which the customer might ask for using asp.net mvc framework since my knowledge and experience are based on asp.net. And I will use the CRM API to integrate my asp.net web application with the Java-based CRM. I have developed a simple demo which integrate these three main components (CRM engine, asp.net application and the reporting tool) and they worked well. But I am afraid of the following risk that I might face if I go with the above approach: I should hire developers with different skills and experience: Developers with Java skills to be able to modify the Java-based CRM and writing plug-ins -when needed- to extend the CRM capabilities. Other developers with asp.net skills to be able to build the application such as application forms, the portal from where users will be able to start the CRM processes, searching capabilities, etc. So might the above point raise some risks when I start hiring a new team and start building the CRM application, OR I am on the right track at this early stage?

  • Part 1 - Load Testing In The Cloud

    - by Tarun Arora
Azure is fascinating, but even more fascinating is the marriage of Azure and TFS! Introduction Recently a client I worked for had 2 major business critical applications being delivered, with very little time budgeted for Performance testing, we immediately hit a bottleneck when the performance testing phase started, the in house infrastructure team could not support the hardware requirements in the short notice. It was suggested that the performance testing be performed on one of the QA environments which was a fraction of the production environment. This didn’t seem right, the team decided to turn to the cloud. The team took advantage of the elasticity offered by Azure, starting with a single test agent which was provisioned and ready for use with in 30 minutes the team scaled up to 17 test agents to perform a very comprehensive performance testing cycle. Issues were identified and resolved but the highlight was that the cost of running the ‘test rig’ proved to be less than if hosted on premise by the infrastructure team. Thank you for taking the time out to read this blog post, in the series of posts, I’ll try and cover the start to end of everything you need to know to use Azure to build your Test Rig in the cloud. But Why Azure? I have my own Data Centre… If the environment is provisioned in your own datacentre, - No matter what level of service agreement you may have with your infrastructure team there will be down time when the environment is patched - How fast can you scale up or down the environments (keeping the enterprise processes in mind) Administration, Cost, Flexibility and Scalability are the areas you would want to think around when taking the decision between your own Data Centre and Azure! How is Microsoft's Public Cloud Offering different from Amazon’s Public Cloud Offering? Microsoft's offering of the Cloud is a hybrid of Platform as a Service (PaaS) and Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) which distinguishes Microsoft's offering from other providers such as Amazon (Amazon only offers IaaS). PaaS – Platform as a Service IaaS – Infrastructure as a Service Fills the needs of those who want to build and run custom applications as services. Similar to traditional hosting, where a business will use the hosted environment as a logical extension of the on-premises datacentre. A service provider offers a pre-configured, virtualized application server environment to which applications can be deployed by the development staff. Since the service providers manage the hardware (patching, upgrades and so forth), as well as application server uptime, the involvement of IT pros is minimized. On-demand scalability combined with hardware and application server management relieves developers from infrastructure concerns and allows them to focus on building applications. The servers (physical and virtual) are rented on an as-needed basis, and the IT professionals who manage the infrastructure have full control of the software configuration. This kind of flexibility increases the complexity of the IT environment, as customer IT professionals need to maintain the servers as though they are on-premises. The maintenance activities may include patching and upgrades of the OS and the application server, load balancing, failover clustering of database servers, backup and restoration, and any other activities that mitigate the risks of hardware and software failures.   The biggest advantage with PaaS is that you do not have to worry about maintaining the environment, you can focus all your time in solving the business problems with your solution rather than worrying about maintaining the environment. If you decide to use a VM Role on Azure, you are asking for IaaS, more on this later. A nice blog post here on the difference between Saas, PaaS and IaaS. Now that we are convinced why we should be turning to the cloud and why in specific Azure, let’s discuss about the Test Rig. The Load Test Rig – Topology Now the moment of truth, Of course a big part of getting value from cloud computing is identifying the most adequate workloads to take to the cloud, so I’ve decided to try to make a Load Testing rig where the Agents are running on Windows Azure.   I’ll talk you through the above Topology, - User: User kick starts the load test run from the developer workstation on premise. This passes the request to the Test Controller. - Test Controller: The Test Controller is on premise connected to the same domain as the developer workstation. As soon as the Test Controller receives the request it makes use of the Windows Azure Connect service to orchestrate the test responsibilities to all the Test Agents. The Windows Azure Connect endpoint software must be active on all Azure instances and on the Controller machine as well. This allows IP connectivity between them and, given that the firewall is properly configured, allows the Controller to send work loads to the agents. In parallel, the Controller will collect the performance data from the agents, using the traditional WMI mechanisms. - Test Agents: The Test Agents are on the Windows Azure Public Cloud, as soon as the test controller issues instructions to the test agents, the test agents start executing the load tests. The HTTP requests are issued against the web server on premise, the results are captured by the test agents. And finally the results are passed over to the controller. - Servers: The Web Server and DB Server are hosted on premise in the datacentre, this is usually the case with business critical applications, you probably want to manage them your self. Recap and What’s next? So, in the introduction in the series of blog posts on Load Testing in the cloud I highlighted why creating a test rig in the cloud is a good idea, what advantages does Windows Azure offer and the Test Rig topology that I will be using. I would also like to mention that i stumbled upon this [Video] on Azure in a nutshell, great watch if you are new to Windows Azure. In the next post I intend to start setting up the Load Test Environment and discuss pricing with respect to test agent machine types that will be used in the test rig. Hope you enjoyed this post, If you have any recommendations on things that I should consider or any questions or feedback, feel free to add to this blog post. • Who does code coverage testing?

    - by Athiruban
Recently, I was given an opportunity to increase the code coverage in a project based on Java Swing, MySQL and other technologies. They told me to bring the code coverage to 100%, while it was only 45% at the time I joined. I am just starting, not a professional developer, right from the beginning I felt bad even though I write and understand computer programs well. (The developed code contains a lot of technical stuff like Generics and no documentation about the code is available.) Has anyone experienced the same situation before? Please tell who is the right person to do the job.
