• How to get smartcard reader name in Windows 7 using C#?

  Hi! I'm trying to make a C# program which will use a C .dll (unfortunately, the .dll doesn't have good documentation) to access a smart card. One of the functions of the .dll uses name of the reader as argument. My problem is that I don't know how to get the name. After looking for answers I found something similar to what I need in an example here: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa379803%28VS.85%29.aspx I'm looking for a way to get szReader value as described in the aforementioned example using C#. Can anyone help me or at least point me in the right direction?

• I have a problem sometimes in my vb.net webmail application?

  I have a weird problem in my vb.net web application sometimes. webmail webform with html editor, sometimes very rare users type for example more than 200 or 400 characters and send the message to other user. But the reciever only recieves 5 or 7 characters. 2 or 3 words of the message. I don know what is going on. I checked the code, no bugs everything is working fine.All the users are on Microsoft XPsp2 platform. Any help will be appreciated. Is this sufficient , or shall I provide any more input regarding the problem...?? OK I got it... the problem is when I type characters in HtmlEditor it keeps on continuing, i mean it should go to the end and automatically comes to the second line....but it is going on and on.how can I stop this.

• Detecting a Key Press Squashed by Another Application

  I have a WPF application I'm planning to use as an overlay for a DirectX game (specifically Bad Company 2). I'm using WM_KEYBOARD_LL hook to detect KeyDown events so I can bring my app to the foreground when a specific button is pressed. This works perfectly except for when the game is running (I've also noticed this problem with Window's "Chess Titans" so it may be a DirectX thing). As far as I can work out, when the game detects a keyboard press, it "eats" the event and doesn't pass the CallNextHookEx() method like it should, which would allow the key press message to be moved along to the next application in the queue. I'm wondering if there's any sort of work-around to this? It seems kind of unfair that a single application can just willy-nilly eat up messages like that. • Algorithm: efficient way to remove duplicate integers from an array

  I got this problem from an interview with Microsoft. Given an array of random integers, write an algorithm in C that removes duplicated numbers and return the unique numbers in the original array. E.g Input: {4, 8, 4, 1, 1, 2, 9} Output: {4, 8, 1, 2, 9, ?, ?} One caveat is that the expected algorithm should not required the array to be sorted first. And when an element has been removed, the following elements must be shifted forward as well. Anyway, value of elements at the tail of the array where elements were shifted forward are negligible. Update: The result must be returned in the original array and helper data structure (e.g. hashtable) should not be used. However, I guess order preservation is not necessary. Update2: For those who wonder why these impractical constraints, this was an interview question and all these constraints are discussed during the thinking process to see how I can come up with different ideas.

• Debugging feature activation in SharePoint 2007

  I have a SharePoint feature that is activated under 'Site Collection Features' that is having some issues being activated. I've activated it through the stsadm as well as the SharePoint UI, both unsuccessful. The feature toggles from deactivated to activated, but the result that should be there is not. The result is some pages that should be created. So my question is does anyone know of a way to step through the activation of features process? I'd like to be able to attach Visual Studio 2008 to the browser and step through a few breakpoints that I've set. • How to Remove the Last Week Of a Calendar

  I am not sure why other people have not asked this before. But have you notice that the asp:Calendar shows an extra week at the end? For example if the VisibleMonth is set to 2010-03-01 and FirstDayOfWeek to Sunday: It will show 6 weeks. Feb 28 to March 6 March 7 to March 13 March 14 to March 20 March 21 to March 27 March 28 to April 3 April 4 to April 10 I was wondering why Microsoft shows the last Row which is entirely on April. I tried to search the net for a property but it does not seem to be existing. The only solution that I could think of is to override the Pre_Render and check all individual date if they are still within the week of the VisibleDate. But of course that is an extreme checking since each rendering of the control shows it.

• mingw32-make : "Input line too long" issue

  We have a Makefile which runs on a Windows 2003 machine and we are using mingw32-make for it. Since the Makefile has many include paths, it exceeds the buffer size of 8K that the cmd can handle [Ref - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/830473/EN-US/due to which the compilation results in "input line too long" issue. I wanted to know the following - What would be the best way to optimize the Makefile as I have already removed unwanted compiler switches, include paths etc. Is there any way we can put all the INCLUDE paths in one .txt file and import it in the Makefile.I could not find any mingw32 documentation for the same. Any other inputs/hints/reference links are most welcome. Thanks, -HJSblogger

• On WindowsMobile, how can i tell what other processes are reserving shared memory space?

  On WindowMobile 6.1, I am using VirtualAlloc to reserve 2MB chunks, which will return me an address from the large shared memory area so allocations do not count against my per process virtual space. (doc here: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa908768.aspx) However, on some devices i notice that I am not able to reserve memory after a certain point. VirtualAlloc will return NULL (getlasterror() says out of memory). The only explanation for this that I see is that another process has already reserved a bunch of memory and my process is therefore unable to. Any idea where I can find a tool to show me the shared mem region of a WM device? Thanks.

• How do I choose files from the local filesystem in Windows Phone 7

  I'm trying to choose some files to upload in Windows Phone 7 (in the emulator), and any attempt to ShowDialog of the OpenFileDialog leads to a Security Exception. The open file dialog is being called from an event on a button click but I get a SecurityException [FileDialog_ActiveScripting] Arguments: Debugging resource strings are unavailable. Often the key and arguments provide sufficient information to diagnose the problem. • Insert an ajaxified Webpart into an existing MOSS site

  Hi everybody, I need to code a webpart which purpose is to asynchronously fetch some documents and display them into an existing page. Unfortunately I have to face a lot of rescritcions and my struggle to find a solution seems useleess so far. 1) I cannot use Microsoft asp.net ajax 2) I must use Jsonp because the called service (page, whatever...) is outside the site's domain. That's not a big problem. 3) I have no possibility to alter the existing page code, so I cannot reference an external library such as JQuery. 4) For the same reason I have no possibility to call my methods on the window.onLoad event, so here the question is: how can I be sure that everything is correctly loaded before triggering my ajax call? 5) Since several instances of the same webpart can be placed into the same page, can there be some possible conflicts among the various js functions?

• Windows Azure: need to know the data processing time

  I have stored some files in the form of blobs on azure and I have written an application that would access these blobs. When I host this application as a web role on azure, it works perfectly and I am happy with that. But now, I wanted to know “what is the query time taken to access each blob file?” I was searching for this through the Microsoft Azure Storage SLA and I found that for GetBlob request type, the maximum processing time should be within the product of 2 seconds multiplied by the number of MBs transferred in processing the request. I am still unclear. What is the actual processing time of my data query? How can I measure it? Can I be able to speed up the processing time? I can understand that the processing time depends on internet speed, location of the data center where my data is being stored, and location of data center where my application is being hosted. But still, will I be able to speed up my query?

  We're debating whether our future Windows UI development should be WinForms or WPF. How have some of you made this decision? Most of our applications are LOB applications, and I'm not sure I see a clear and overwhelming benefit to WPF for these types of applications. However, my knowledge of WPF is limited. I'm also a little concerned that WPF will be in vogue for another couple years and then Microsoft will get tired of it and push something else on us. I guess one argument against this is the fact that Visual Studio 2010 is a WPF application. Thanks.

I have a screen showing a list of users, and I display the details of the selected user on the right-hand side with editable textboxes. I then have a Save button which is DataBound, but I would only like this button to display when data has actually changed. ie - I need to check for "dirty data".   I'm Writing a simple pong game in C# and XNA 4.0 to learn unit testing. The tools used are TestDriven.NET and NUnit, all newest versions. The problem is, if I test the code with VS2010 internal debugger, everything runs fine, but when I use "Run Test(s)" from menu, the application chokes with error: Test 'WindowsGame1.Game1.TestGameMenu' failed: Microsoft.Xna.Framework.Content.ContentLoadException : Error loading "SpaceBackground". File not found. ----> System.IO.FileNotFoundException : Error loading "Content\SpaceBackground.xnb". File not found. (some more below...) So it stops when the first textre is going to be loaded.   Hi I wanted a function to find the greatest of a list of String values passed in. I want to invoke it as Select greatest('Abcd','Efgh','Zxy','EAD') from sql server. It should return Zxy. The number of parameters is variable.Incidentally it is very similar to oracle GREATEST function. So I wrote a very simple CLR function (Vs2008) and tried to deploy it. • The Virtues and Challenges of Implementing Basel III: What Every CFO and CRO Needs To Know

  The Basel Committee on Banking Supervision (BCBS) is a group tasked with providing thought-leadership to the global banking industry.  Over the years, the BCBS has released volumes of guidance in an effort to promote stability within the financial sector.  By effectively communicating best-practices, the Basel Committee has influenced financial regulations worldwide.  Basel regulations are intended to help banks: More easily absorb shocks due to various forms of financial-economic stress Improve risk management and governance Enhance regulatory reporting and transparency In June 2011, the BCBS released Basel III: A global regulatory framework for more resilient banks and banking systems.  This new set of regulations included many enhancements to previous rules and will have both short and long term impacts on the banking industry.  Some of the key features of Basel III include: A stronger capital base More stringent capital standards and higher capital requirements Introduction of capital buffers  Additional risk coverage Enhanced quantification of counterparty credit risk Credit valuation adjustments  Wrong  way risk  Asset Value Correlation Multiplier for large financial institutions Liquidity management and monitoring Introduction of leverage ratio Even more rigorous data requirements To implement these features banks need to embark on a journey replete with challenges. These can be categorized into three key areas: Data, Models and Compliance. Data Challenges Data quality - All standard dimensions of Data Quality (DQ) have to be demonstrated.  Manual approaches are now considered too cumbersome and automation has become the norm. Data lineage - Data lineage has to be documented and demonstrated.  The PPT / Excel approach to documentation is being replaced by metadata tools.  Data lineage has become dynamic due to a variety of factors, making static documentation out-dated quickly.  Data dictionaries - A strong and clean business glossary is needed with proper identification of business owners for the data.  Data integrity - A strong, scalable architecture with work flow tools helps demonstrate data integrity.  Manual touch points have to be minimized.   Data relevance/coverage - Data must be relevant to all portfolios and storage devices must allow for sufficient data retention.  Coverage of both on and off balance sheet exposures is critical.   Model Challenges Model development - Requires highly trained resources with both quantitative and subject matter expertise. Model validation - All Basel models need to be validated. This requires additional resources with skills that may not be readily available in the marketplace.  Model documentation - All models need to be adequately documented.  Creation of document templates and model development processes/procedures is key. Risk and finance integration - This integration is necessary for Basel as the Allowance for Loan and Lease Losses (ALLL) is calculated by Finance, yet Expected Loss (EL) is calculated by Risk Management – and they need to somehow be equal.  This is tricky at best from an implementation perspective.  Compliance Challenges Rules interpretation - Some Basel III requirements leave room for interpretation.  A misinterpretation of regulations can lead to delays in Basel compliance and undesired reprimands from supervisory authorities. Gap identification and remediation - Internal identification and remediation of gaps ensures smoother Basel compliance and audit processes.  However business lines are challenged by the competing priorities which arise from regulatory compliance and business as usual work.  Qualification readiness - Providing internal and external auditors with robust evidence of a thorough examination of the readiness to proceed to parallel run and Basel qualification  In light of new regulations like Basel III and local variations such as the Dodd Frank Act (DFA) and Comprehensive Capital Analysis and Review (CCAR) in the US, banks are now forced to ask themselves many difficult questions.  For example, executives must consider: How will Basel III play into their Risk Appetite? How will they create project plans for Basel III when they haven’t yet finished implementing Basel II? How will new regulations impact capital structure including profitability and capital distributions to shareholders? After all, new regulations often lead to diminished profitability as well as an assortment of implementation problems as we discussed earlier in this note.  However, by requiring banks to focus on premium growth, regulators increase the potential for long-term profitability and sustainability.  And a more stable banking system: Increases consumer confidence which in turn supports banking activity  Ensures that adequate funding is available for individuals and companies Puts regulators at ease, allowing bankers to focus on banking Stability is intended to bring long-term profitability to banks.  Therefore, it is important that every banking institution takes the steps necessary to properly manage, monitor and disclose its risks.  This can be done with the assistance and oversight of an independent regulatory authority.  A spectrum of banks exist today wherein some continue to debate and negotiate with regulators over the implementation of new requirements, while others are simply choosing to embrace them for the benefits I highlighted above. • Silverlight solution builds in VS2008 but fails with MSBuild

  I have a Silverlight solution that I want to create a build script for. I have a simple script that looks like this call "c:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 9.0\VC\bin\vcvars32.bat" msbuild %CD%\V1\Incentive.sln /target:Rebuild /property:Configuration=DEBUG;WarningLevel=2 msbuild %CD%\UI\IncentiveUI.sln /target:Rebuild /property:Configuration=DEBUG;WarningLevel=2 pause However when I run this I get a failure, with some complaints about classes that are in a project with linked files: http://pastebin.com/JRE3tWfh This solution compiles fine in VS2008 so I can't figure out what the problem is. I have to guess something is wrong with the way I am using msbuild here.

• ListView control rendering issue with Groups, CheckBoxes and View mode SmallIcon

  Microsoft MSDN site has next remark: "Any groups assigned to a ListView control appear whenever the ListView.View property is set to a value other than View.List." My problem is that i like to have View set to SmallIcon. In this mode ListView control is shifted left, and CheckBoxes are covered by left edge How to solve this issue, or at least how is possible to shift rendering of control to the right. My OS is Windows XP Service Pack 3. It looks like that ListView items with Groups and CheckBoxes shows correctly only when View set to Details.

• Remove registry key during uninstall

  Hello there. I have a simple C# application that allows users to specify that it should be (or should not be) started with Windows; it does so by setting (or deleting) a registry key (namely, ...\Software\Microsoft\CurrentVersion\Run\MyApplicationHere). I am using a VS setup project to create the installer for this program. I don't want the installer to create this key; it should only be created when the user selects the option from within the program. Here is the issue: I would like the uninstaller to delete this key if it exists, preferably without resorting to any sort of hackery; if there is a simple "built-in" solution I would love to hear it. Thanks!
