• Minecraft Fullscreen not working

  I upgraded to Quantal recently, and Minecraft seems to not want to run in fullscreen. When I go to fullscreen it, the screen will go black for a second, as if it was about to go fullscreen normally, but then it just restores back into its window. So far I have tried: using different JREs (I've tried openjdk 6 and 7, as well as oracle7). Oracle's jre wouldn't even run Minecraft (I just got a black screen after logging in) switching graphics drivers (tried nvidia-current, nvidia-current-updates, and xserver-xorg-video-nouveau) updating minecraft bin files updating lwjgl libraries separately from the lwjgl site None of this seemed to work at all. I am running Minecraft with the command java -Xmx1024M -Xms512M -cp minecraft.jar net.minecraft.LauncherFrame Graphics card is GeForce 9500 GS/PCIe/SSE2. Everything was working fine a few days ago when I was on 12.04.

  As a programmer I use java for learning to code in Netbeans. I installed Sun java 6 long time ago over openJDK that came with my ubuntu just cause it seemed more responsive... Now that oracle left the repos I wanted something easy to handle to install and uninstall, so I want to Remove completely sun java 6 from my computer and set as default OPENjdk....and openjre. I already have installed OpenJDK and OPENjre...but not marked as default. Besides I want to clean Sun java from here, dont wanna get messy ^^. Running ubuntu 11.10

• Installing 64bit Java 7 - Cannot Execute Binary File

  So I downloaded the latest version of Java from Oracle so I could get a 64bit JVM on Ubuntu Server 10.10. After extracting the file and updating the alternatives I went to check my installation by running java -version and I get this error: -bash: /usr/bin/java: cannot execute binary file I'm at a loss for what to do here.   I am looking for some resources on the JVM bytecode. Ideally I would for a short book; something more than a blog post but not a 800 pages tome. If it is relevant, I am a Scala developer, not a Java one, although I know Java just fine. I would like something that allowed me to read JVM bytecode and answer questions such as: Why does the bytecode has to know about high level construct such as classes? Are subtyping relations still visible in bytecode? How does type erasure work exactly? How do Oracle and Dalvik bytecode differ, and what consequences does this have for, say, developing Android apps with Scala? How does the JVM manage the stack, and why exactly this creates issues with tail call elimination? and so on.

I am not sure if the new position's title conveys a sideways move or an advancement. So, all other things being roughly equal (salary, domain of expertise, etc.), what is the external difference between these software engineer titles (in general and regardless of any particular company, if possible): senior engineer senior research engineer senior staff engineer member of technical staff principal engineer Edit: Let me elaborate on "member of technical staff" since it's kind of uncommon. I think it's a high title, commonly associated with research. I know that Oracle, VMWare, and the old Bell Labs have these titles. See: Member of Technical Staff .   I'm reading part 17.2.1 of Java language specification: http://docs.oracle.com/javase/specs/jls/se7/html/jls-17.html#jls-17.2.1 I won't copy a text, it's too long, but I would like to know, why for third step of sequence they're saying that If thread t was removed from m's wait set in step 2 due to an interrupt Thread couldn't get to step 2 it wasn't removed from wait set, because it written for the step 1: Thread t does not execute any further instructions until it has been removed from m's wait set Thus thread can't be removed from wait set in step 2 whatever it's due to, because it was already removed. Please help me understand this.

  I am working as a developer for 3 years and I am thinking of switch to dba. I do not own any certificate nor received any training regarding the daily job of dba. My company also do not offer any chance of work/training related to a dba. If I want to be a dba ( because of the salary and a much stable job than developer ), should I go to get some oracle certificates? I've also heard that you can't be a good dba if you cannot get a good understanding about the working OS such as windows/unix ( and to do that you also need to get some certificate on windows administration or unix administration ) but they recommend book of Rich Stevens over certificate. I am confused on what should I do to make this happen.

• MAAS fails to Commission nodes

  I'm evaluating MaaS/Juju. I followed instructions in this link http://maas.ubuntu.com/docs1.5/install.html to setup MaaS. I'm running this in Oracle VirtualBox environment so Power options are not configured for the VMs. PXE booting VM works fine. The node shuts down itself and registers with MaaS in Declared state. Issues: a) When I Commission the VM (which is in the Declared state), first it gets IP-Config: no response after 60 secs - giving up errors. (See link below for a screenshot). b) Fails to mount the boot device and drops into initramfs prompt. • Linux Mint Cinamon 17 Qiana, Xfce desktop background problem [on hold]

  I've installed Xfce4 on my laptop which runs Linux Mint 17 with Cinamon default desktop. Everything works OK and I customized my lightweight Xfce, like change menu location and desktop background that it is similar to my Cinamon desktop and used it for a while. Suddenly after last restart my desktop background becomes black and there is no option for desktop background change when I right click on desktop. I should mention that xfdesktop & didn't help, which tells it's already running. Some icons like Computer, Home and Oracle VM that was already there is showing, but my Trash or other icons did not. I've tried everywhere in xfce4-settings-manager but could not get my desktop background back

• Languages with similar features to JavaFX Script

  I just completed a small project in JavaFX, only finding that it has been declared dead by Oracle. JavaFX Script actually seemed to be a pretty interesting language with some neat features for its domain, particularly with bind for data binding and on replace for triggered events. These features actually make the language very useful for small, quick, RIA type apps, which leads to my question: Are there any mainstream languages with features similar to bind and on replace? After working with JavaFX, I got some ideas for some small personal (academic) projects that could take advantage of these features, but I would prefer to not start anything new in a language considered extinct by its owners.

• Install Java on Ubuntu server (Parallels Plesk)

  I want to install Java to my server so I can use PHP shell_exec to compile Java online. So I'm trying to install Java on my webserver (Ubuntu - Parallels Plesk). I logged in to the server with PuTTY and tried some commands like: sudo apt-get install openjdk-6-jre or sudo apt-get install oracle-java7-installer But than I get error's like: Package drweb-bases must be reinstalled, but there can be no archive found. I tried to uninstall drweb-bases, reinstall, no matter what. I still get that error. What you I need to do? I am doing it completly wrong? Am I not destroying my webserver? There is not much to find on this topic on Google.

• Why didn't virtual ubuntu halts clearly?

  I am running Ubuntu 11.10 on Oracle Virtual Box 4.2.4 under Windows 7 x64. To stop guest system I often use halt command which works fine on physical machines. But it looks hanging on virtual ubunty. After halt it starts shutting down, Ubuntu logo appears with dots below flashing. After some cycles it just stops. VM manager does not feel machine is gone, so I need to power off it. P.S. The system stops Ok if I shutdown it via GUI.

• Aptana Studio 3 does not start up in Ubuntu 12.10

  I followed the instructions provided here to install Aptana Studio 3 in my Ubuntu 12.10. I have completed all the steps with out any problems. When I click the Aptana icon in my Unity bar nothing happens. No error pops up! I gave permission on the sh file and on the directory (/opt/Aptana_Studio_3) but still same problem. If I try executing the sh file in the /opt/Aptana_Studio_3 folder, it says "Syntax error: "(" unexpected Aptana". Also I cannot execute the Aptana binary file directly. I have been trying to solve the problem for a while now. Any help would be much appreciated. EDIT: I have Oracle Java 7 installed. I have read some post about backwards compatibility problem with Java 6 but dont know whether that's the issue. I will edit the question if I find something new.

  Hardware: Intel i7 AMD Radeon HD 6970 SSD with plenty of space 6 GB RAM Software OpenJDK 6, 7, and Oracle Java 7 (reproducible with all three) AMD Catalyst 12.8 and open source driver (reproducible with both) Ubuntu 12.04 x86_64 and older Minecraft 1.3.2 vanilla and older On this setup I am getting rubbish frame rates after a short while of playing, dropping from about 45-55 to 15 in a couple of minutes. CPU use is 40-45 even when rendering the opening screen at 1920x1280, and gameRenderer is using about 90% CPU when playing. Rather than trying to eke out a few more FPS out of an obviously broken rendering pipeline, I really hope to find a solution to make the GPU render Minecraft.
