• Reinstall of Windows Bootloader not working

  It first started when I deleted my partition that had Ubuntu 12.04 on it. Little did I realize at the time that it would destroy all the resources of Grub on it, and subsequently prevent me booting into my hibernated windows. So I made a 12.10 Ubuntu live USB and reinstalled windows bootloader. When I rebooted it gave me a bootloader error saying I that it could not find the resources to boot from. So I went back to my live USB and installed boot-repair and tried to repair the mbr. It didn't work though.   I work in the IT department of a training center, we still offer XP and Office 2003 trainings but also offer Vista and Win7 and Office 2007. Currently, we use VMs on VMware Server but this is obviously not a superb choice. We're thinking of implementing something like VDI (brainstorm phase, we hardly have any details) but I decided to check here if people would have some clever alternatives. Requirements: * Flexible when it comes to deployment * Centralized management would be a big plus * Allow for different software, whether they be compatible or not (all of office except for outlook can be installed simultaneously. for outlook you need to choose between 2003 or 2007) * Allow for different OS We have a big enough budget to implement a proper SAN environment to accomodate the virtualization of the solution, whatever kind it may be. A support contract will probably be necessary as well, because we need to be able to offer quick solutions to problems and with only 2 sysadmins that is simply impossible to guarantee.

• Uninstalling dual boot Ubuntu 12.04 LTS with Windows 7

  I tried Ubuntu and decided Windows 7 was good enough for me.I tried to uninstall it but in Disk Management in Windows 7, I can't find the partition for Ubuntu. There are HP_Tools, OS (C:), Recovery (D:) and SYSTEM partitions and are all NTFS. My HDD has 250 GB, but it shows only ~230 GBs. I'm confussed about what's going on, as I'm pretty sure I had Ubuntu installed, even booted into it a few days back. I even used EaseUS. Shows the same thing as Disk Management. I've made a Ubuntu Live USB. How do I get Ubuntu off my laptop? Thanks in advance.

• Connecting Windows 7 to legacy Linux Samba share

  I have had to rebuild my Windows 7 PC and all has gone fairly well until I tried to connect to a Samba share on a legacy Linux box running Redhat 8. No matter what combination of domain / user /password I would just see the same message of: "The specified network password is not correct." This is a misleading error, very annoying and a little confusing until I found a hint that Windows 7 default authentication was not supported on older Samba implementations. I guess I figured this out once before as it used to work before the rebuild! Anyway here is the solution: 1. Control Panel->System and Security->Administrative Tools->Local Security Policy (or run secpol.msc). 2. Select Local Policies->Security Options->Network security: LAN Manager authentication level. 3. Select 'Send LM and NTLM - use NTLMv2 session security if negotiated' and click OK. #

  So my old pc is dead. I took off the HDD cause my files are in there. I have this new pc but the hdd is only 80gb. There are no important files in there so i can just throw it away. I want to switch it with my old HDD. But: I cant just plug in the old hdd to my new pc right? If not, how can i switch to that old hdd without losing my files? Will there be risk for my new pc when I plug in that old HDD (i mean i dont want to have 2 dead PCs) (My first plan was actually just adding the old HDD but my pc doesnt have room left for that.)

  I am looking for an employee monitoring solution, that would allow us to remotely connect to our computers to see what is happening live, and preferably having some recording capabilities such as snapshots, URLs visited, etc ... I've looked around the web and most softwares I found were from unknown companies, had crappy websites, and made me feel like their either wanted me to install a virus on my computer, or to scam me. Most also seemed to have planted "reviews" online most likely written by themselves. Basically, anyone has experience with a trustworthy company to accomplish that? Thanks

• How to start a s3ql script automatically on boot?

  I've been experimenting with s3ql on Ubuntu 10.04, using it to mount Amazon S3 buckets. However, I'd really like it to mount them automatically. Does anyone know how to do that? I've been working on a script, which works when its run from from the commandline, but for some reason I can't get it to run automatically on boot. Does anyone have any ideas?   The Silverlight Toolkit for Windows Phone adds some great extra controls for Windows Phone 7, one gotcha that I ran into was that the DatePicker Application Bar icons don’t show up unless you include them in your project. The problem is that your DatePicker ends up looking like this: Tim Heuer mentions this in his blog post about the Silverlight Toolkit for WP7, and as he says, it is documented in the source code: So the problem is that the icons can’t be referenced from the Silverlight Toolkit Assembly, and the solution is that you have to add them to you project in the ‘well known’ / pre-defined location of a top level folder in your project called Toolkit.Content, and you must make sure to mark the icons with a Build Action of  ‘Content’ otherwise it wont work: The result is that your DatePicker will now look like this:

  The XDG Base Directory Specification is a very interesting spec for user directories. It also provides good default values, except for XDG_RUNTIME_DIR. Now I am writing a software that needs to create named pipes. It is a per-user client-server framework (there is a FIFO for the server and a FIFO per client). If XDG_RUNTIME_DIR is not defined, I am currently using a per-user subdirectory in /tmp — but it does not ensure all the specified conditions (viz. the paragraph starting with "The lifetime of the directory MUST be bound to the user being logged in…") Is /tmp/myserver-$USER good enough? Edit I saw elsewhere a few suggestions: . is quite unsatisfactory (at least because it is not an absolute path). I also saw /var/run/user/$USER — not bad, but that directory does not exist (at least on my box running a Debian testing)

• Idling CPU at 65C, re-place or re-paste?

  Replaced Graphics card because screen would go black at a certain temp while gaming, but sound would stay on (but locked up). Then with replacement card whole PC shuts off during gaming now because the CPU is overheating. Note: CPU is only supposed to go up to 71C max according to manufacturer and it goes well over upon load. System Temp: 30C TL;DR: Idling CPU at 65C, started to shut down due to overheating, re-place (CPU, or CPU and Motherboard) or re-paste?

• Citrix Metaframe/RD - screen refresh weirdness

  I access a clients W2003 machine (XEN Virtualization) using RD over Citrix Metaframe. Everything used to be fine. Some weeks ago things turned bad ! All is well initially but after, say, 5 minutes the screen will stop refreshing. Rather weirdly you can then still proceed in a way as you can make the screen refresh by getting the RD window to go through a restore/maximise cycle (this is only possible using the ALT-BREAK shortcut as everything else is locked up). This then allows you to proceed by typing something and going ALT-BREAK to see the results. Using menus is just not possible at all. There's some indications that clearing the java cache between sessions helps. Also that the lockup happens more quickly if you make the 'lots of stuff happen' on the screen - for instance if you do a directory listing of a big directory then often that will cause the lockup to occur. Similary opening a dense Excel workbook and then scrolling it will cause the lockup to occur. Any Metaframe veterans out there who recognise these symptoms ? I'd be very grateful as it's driving me nuts.

  I am using Fantacy Remote to remote view other machines. I have attached the default .INI file that Fantacy Remote uses. When i connect to a machine, the client user should not have mouse and keyboard access of the Remote machine. It should be a View only remote connection. And i want to make the Remote viewer screen to be in full screen mode, because i dont want the user to do anything with menubars of Fatancy remote. Because this is kiosk application. What should i change in configuration file [.ini] inorder to achieve the above ? Anyone who have used this software before, kindly help..   Mac OS X Spaces change when I drag a window at the edge of the screen. Is there an application or 'defaults' command to disable this? Warp looks like it might help, but hasn't changed the behavior for me, even though I tried turning it off, or setting a modifier key.

  there is program NetLimiter for windows. while I was using windows it was very useful to me to find out the IP address of ther person who was downloading from me, or to know IP address of any person on lan who was using DC++ with some nick. and after that I can easily know the computer name of that person using nbtstat. I was wondering if there is any tool for ubuntu using which I an find out the IP address of person who is downloading from me or from whom I am downloading on lan. I am on university lan and we are using PtokaX and DC++ for file sharing on lan. people sometimes put some offencive stuff on open chat on DC++ using some Nick and I don't know how to trace them while I am using Ubuntu. Plz help.

  I have just set up a Server 2008 R2 machine with Remote Desktop Services. It's all running on the one server, just for a single application, which works fine locally and when using Remote Desktop Web Access on the local network. However, when accessing it over the Internet, you can log on to RD Web Access fine, but when running the RemoteApp you get the message: RemoteApp Disconnected The remote computer could not be found. Please contact your helpdesk about this error. The application and all Remote Desktop services are on a single machine. I have purchased and installed a GoDaddy Cert. It works like a charm in the local network, but I get the above message when trying to access through rdweb How can I enable the RemoteApp to function outside the local network? I think there is one or 2 steps I left out??.. Please help...

• No GLX on Intel card with multiseat with additional nVidia card

  I have multiseat configured and my Xorg has 2 server layouts. One is for nVidia card and other is for Intel card. They both work, but display server assigned to Intel card doesn't have hardware acceleration since DRI and GLX module being used is from nVidia driver. So my question is, can I configure layouts somehow to use right DRI and GLX with each card?
